5 Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / SPONSORED: 7 Foreign Language Learning Myths on: 31-10-2017 03:31 PM

Most common foreign language learning myths busted

You can find lots of excuses not to learn a foreign language. “I’ve got no talent for language learning”, “You need to go to another country for that”, “I had to start learning it when I was a kid” and other reasons not to do that. But in fact, all of the above are no more than myths that have to be busted.

Myth 1: To learn a language, you need special talents and high IQ score.
Did you know that the majority of people in some countries like Sweden and Netherlands speak foreign languages? Do you think they all have some special talents for this? Of course not. There are lots of people who can speak foreign languages, and not all of them are geniuses. The main factors that really matter when it comes to language learning are motivation, possibility of language practice, time and effort invested and choice of an efficient learning method.

Myth 2: Kids are better at learning languages than adults
It’s true that some research shows that kids learn foreign languages faster than adults. But it’s not because they are more able-minded – it’s just because learn languages differently. Unlike grownups, they absorb a foreign language without really thinking of rules, logic and proper writing skills. They are not afraid to speak a language and to make mistakes – and that’s why it’s easier for them.
But other research data shows that, providing that proper self-discipline and systematic approach are involved, adults actually make faster progress in learning a foreign language. They are able to understand and correctly use grammatical structures, learn more words and master a topic quicker. Which means that age is not a key factor here.

Myth 3: Learning a language is guaranteed if you live in a foreign country
While many think so, there are lots of emigrants who live in countries like USA for many years without knowing the state language too well.
Living in a foreign country doesn’t necessarily mean that you will automatically learn the language they speak there, unless you really make every effort to study the language in all its forms – writing, communication, grammatical structure. You can combine writing (even essay writing) with talking to native speakers on a daily basis and reading books in a foreign language to learn more about grammatical structure, but the sole fact of living in a foreign country won’t guarantee your knowing the language as well as native speakers do.

Myth 4: Attending language classes is enough to learn a language
Learning a language in all its complexity (vocabulary, writing skills, grammar, reading, listening comprehension) takes a great deal of time, practice and revision – and that’s just impossible to do in a class only. Besides, different people need different amounts of time and practice to master a new language. So if you try to learn a language in a group, add some modern technologies to your learning. Your computer is a patient and free tutor available at any time.

Myth 5: Textbooks are sufficient
Any general textbook material is only sufficient for introducing yourself with this topic or another. If you really want to learn a foreign language and know it’s different aspects, you’ll need to choose correct resources for each of those aspects. For example, it would be better to do a grammar exercise online and not in your notebook, because the website you use will automatically check your work for mistakes. It will be easier to learn new words using mobile apps, and a YouTube video will explain grammar rules in a much interesting and memorable way than boring textbooks and endless paper writing.

Myth 6: The best way to learn a language is to speak
In truth, we learn a foreign language thanks to reading and listening. That’s how we learn new words and grammatical structures. Only after that you use the language, that is, you practice writing and speaking. So to be able to speak and write a language, you need to read and listen to it first.

Myth 7: You can (not) make mistakes
In fact, it depends. When you use a foreign language to speak to someone, your main goal is to convey information. So it’s better to make mistakes while you speak than making another person wait till you are sure you got everything right. But when you work on a foreign language (for example, during a class), you need to think of whether you do it right first of all because mistakes tend to stick around.
Of course, it’s not a full list of misconceptions regarding learning foreign languages. But rest assured: if your motivation is right, no myths or stereotypes will stop you on your way to learning a foreign language!
6 Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / SPONSORED: Learn How To Get Smarter With These Simple Tips on: 11-10-2017 07:58 AM

How to Get Smarter

Learn how to get smarter with these simple tips

Your mental capacity takes endless effort. Smart people don’t get their knowledge out of nowhere: it takes some work to gain it. This, however, doesn’t mean that you need to
spend a lot of time and energy on a daily basis to become smarter. If you train your brain to help it adapt to new circumstances and information, you will get smarter in time.

1. Work on your priorities

You can decide what you want to do during the next week in five minutes. Do you want to analyze sources on those essay topics you got? Would you like to start learning a language?
Keep track of what you’ve learned and what you still have to learn: this will help you not to rest on your laurels and move forward.
Planning some key things allows you to get a clear picture of what exactly you want to achieve. Make a list of something you want to learn in the nearest future.
Don’t plan too much, but don’t remain idle either. A simple decision to do something won’t change anything. Action is the best gift you can give yourself, so go for it!

2. Reading is important

Getting smarter will become near impossible if you don’t develop the habit of reading. This doesn’t mean that the books you read for your essay writing are enough. Reading quality fiction, popular science and respected news media are just as important for your mental growth. Besides, reading improves your memory and helps to improve writing skills.

2. Learn as long as you live

Don’t think that learning stops as soon as you graduate from your school and all that custom admission essay writing is over. It’s a never ending, lifetime process.
Learning will be easier if you combine information you already know with learning something new. The more you know, the more pieces of knowledge you can combine together. Never stop looking for answers. If there is something you don’t understand, enhance your knowledge until you get your answers.

3. Subscribe to newsletters

You can learn more by reading newsletters that come to your inbox. There are lots of those, so choose an information service that would supply you with new knowledge on a daily basis. Save some articles that seem interesting for you and read them before you go to sleep.

4. Find a new hobby

Do something. Create something of value. Share your works. Start an interesting project. You will definitely learn something new, even if you don’t reach great success. You will become a better, smarter person than you were before you tried. It doesn’t really matter what exactly you do; just do something that seems important to you. Challenge yourself and create something original.

5. Do expressive writing

Keep a journal where you write about what you learn, what you’ve learned and what you plan to learn in the nearest future. This doesn’t have to be professional writing, it doesn’t have to be perfect or long. Just spend a few minutes each day describing your achievements and goals and you’ll get smarter for it.
You never know what kind of knowledge will come in handy in the future. So just learn new things and see how they impact your life and how they are connected with what you knew before.

6. Share what you’ve learned

One of the best way to learn something is teaching something. If there’s some piece of knowledge you want to master, find a way to teach it to someone.
Share your ideas using your blog, podcast or video channel. Explain what you’ve learned. This will help others and definitely help you.
The thing is when you share knowledge, you memorize it better. This changes your understanding and makes you think. Publish the things you’ve learned. This will help you structure the information you receive.

7. Spend some time in quiet

Have planned breaks from your activities and studies. Give your brain an opportunity to digest the information you’ve received. By refusing to give yourself a break you expose yourself to stress, exhaustion and creativity block.

8. Give some time to thinking

There is a great activity that affects your results in a very positive way. Thinking. Give yourself some time to think without doing anything else – and unless you deliberately plan time for this, you won’t be able to do this properly.
Your thinking session must be free of anything that may distract you. Think of your ideas, evaluate them, analyze them. Thinking is asking yourself questions about your ideas.

9. Increase your mental intensity

Training your mental abilities is a constant job. Build neural connections by learning new things.
Your willpower won’t be enough for this: this takes some intense work and dedication. Make yourself use your brain more and more often The more often you get new knowledge, the stronger your mind gets. Try to learn something new or get a new skill every week – and then work on developing them later, while learning new things.

And remember: while there are tons of tips as to how to get smarter out there, the most important thing is your desire to get smarter. When you have proper motivation, nothing is impossible.

9 Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / SPONSORED: Navigating the Dating Scene: Useful Tips on: 15-09-2017 12:19 AM

Guys who want to start a romantic relationship, you have to adhere to certain tactics of behavior. In this article, you will find tips on how to navigate the dating scene.

1. Start a conversation in a right way
Don’t immediately ask the question on the forehead: "Girl, don’t you want to goon a date with me?" It is better to start a casual conversation on a suitable neutral topic and only then act according to the behavior of a girl.

2. Show your confidence in everything
Most girls like strong, self-confident guys, so it's better for a man not to showthat he is shy or not self-confident. But strength and confidence don’t mean impudence and assertiveness. Many girls are afraid of over-energetic guys and prefer to stay away from them.

3. Don’t forget about compliments
Girls are so fond of compliments so you have to use it. A successful compliment at the right time of dating can melt the heart of even the most impregnable beauty and greatly increase the chances of the guy she likes. But the compliment should not be banal like: "What a beauty you are" or something like that. You can make a girl much more impressed if you make her an individual compliment, for example, praising her blue as the sky (black as the night, green as the sea) eyes, or noticing what a segxwal mole is on her cheek, or what a gentle (sonorous) voice she has.

4. Mention your own merits during conversation
Getting acquainted with a girl, you can, for example, boast of professional or career achievements or say that you like martial arts. In this case, it is not even a sin if you spice up your stories. But it's not necessary to speak outright untruth in order not to be caught in a lie in the future.

5. Impress a girl with a beautiful act or generosity
This can be done if the objective circumstances and possibilities of a man allow do this. For example, give a girl a chic bouquet of flowers or invite to an expensive restaurant.

6. Don’t miss the moment when you move to the decisive stage of dating
If a girl is happy to support the conversation and is not in a hurry to get rid of a man, you can take a chance and ask her phone number to continue the relationship or invite a girl to a first date. If a girl agreed to a meeting or gave a phone number — then the acquaintance with a girl was successfully held. And now you have a chance to turn this acquaintance into a serious (or not very serious) romantic relationship.

7. Offer a lady to be together
After telling a girl about your feelings, immediately offer her a relationship. Do this almost instantly, so that a girl doesn’t have time to get out of the emotional state in which she may stay after your recognition.

8. Steadily and calmly listen to her any answer
Each guy, offering a girl a relationship, expects a positive response from her side. However, such an answer may not follow. So every man should be ready for such a scenario.

9. Don’t despair if a girl refuses to meet
Maybe she just has important things to do and she has no time to communicate. Moreover, if a girl gave her phone number to you, then she can agree to a meeting in the next time more convenient for her. Don’t be nervous, you need to behave with the lady calmly, and also include all your charm.

10. Wait for a while
Every man should remember that it's hard for a girl to immediately understand what a particular man is like. Therefore, you don’t need to insist to become a boyfriend of a girl from the first meeting. You may have to meet several times, showing your goodwill and chivalry, and you can try to offer her to be together only after that.

(then u will see people quoting and re- quoting with good idea) but now all we have here now is small, small boys rushing with anyhow comment just to gain more point in other to win naijapals bounty. it's unfortunate that almost all the old members who use to spark this site with funny and matured comments are no longer here making this site so boring to read and comment anymore cus it looks childish and unserious nowadays.

Don't worry about this, alot of people are banned every now and then but many new and exciting commenters are coming up too, we do not wish to discourage anyone because the more, the merrier and we want everyone to have the best possible experience on the site. Do give this a chance and see how it turns
12 Forum / Relationships & Romance / SURPRISE! SURPRISE!! Naijapals Best Commentator Competition Returns - 2 Winners For July on: 26-07-2017 10:15 PM

Yes! We are bringing back the competition for this month and subsequent months! Incase you are new, we used to have a contest for the best commentators on Gistmania and recognise the winners of the contest at the end of every month to recognize them and sometimes give them some money as prize, but the contest was abused by some members over the period of time (maybe because of the cash prize involved), but the aim of the contest was to encourage the geniune commentators and also recognize them as they deserve. Due to the challenges we faced earlier on, it was important to re-strategize and find a way to beat those seeking to abuse the system - so what we plan to do this month (and subsequently) is to pick the top 5 commentators and conduct a poll (vote) for like 2 weeks at the end of the month, this way - the most popular will emerge winner and be recognized accordingly, this month we will be looking for 2 winners and nice cash gifts will be involved too!

Let us know what you think about our new system above!

Goodluck to everyone! and sorry if this took you by surprise!
13 Forum / The Buzz Central / SPONSORED: PATORANKING THE FIRST AFRICAN TO MAKE HISTORY ON A JAMAICAN STAGE on: 20-07-2017 12:02 PM

Hi how are you and what is your stage name ?
My name is Patoranking

Where are you from and where are you currently living right now?
Lagos Nigeria

How old are you?
I am twenty-seven.

I know tribes are very important in Nigeria, what tribe are you from?
I am Igbo

What do you call your music?
My music is Dancehall with Afro Beat Fusion

How long have you been doing it?
Professionally, I have been singing for ten years, I started off as a dancer at a very young age.

Why was this your choice of music?
I chose Dancehall because I've always wanted to be different from everybody. I have always wanted to be part of people who liked a different sound. I tried to be the exception and that is why as a Nigerian I chose Dancehall. I included Afrobeat because of my culture I wanted to carry my people along with my music

How do you feel when you heard that it was loved in Jamaica?
I felt very happy because Jamaica was a place I’ve been looking forward to, for the fact it is loved there it’s a big accomplishment for me.

Your song ''my woman'' has been making waves in Jamaica, how did you get it to cross over?
I think it is the power of good music. When people love what you do it will travel and transcend. I think music is universal so I am very happy.

This year, for the first time , a Nigerian artiste will be on Reggae Sumfest's bill, how do you feel about being the first artiste to do this?
This is history and is going to go down memory lane forever. Reggae Sumfest is the biggest Reggae show and im the first african artiste to do this , It's history and I am happy.

What do you think about the merge of cultures using the music?
It's unity, and it's a wonderful linkage. I strongly believe that it's going to make the Jamaicans connect back home to the motherland. For Nigerians it is going to promote cultural diversions , it is a good and promising thing.

What is the most important thing you want your fans to know about you?
I want them to understand my music, my life and my struggles through my music.

What do you think of dancehall music right now and which dancehall artiste is your role model?
I think of life when I think of Dancehall, people want to dance, everybody wants to dance. Regardless of what others think, music is life. With all the problems in the world I feel that Dancehall is very important to this generation. We just need to dance away our problems regardless of what is going on. A lot of artiste have used dancehall to address national issues, to talk about life and reality that is how important the music is. My role models are Vybz Kartel , Busy Signal, Mavado, Bouty Killer and Beenieman. Dancehall has a lot of artiste that I admire, its really too many to name.

How long have you been listening to Dancehall?
I started as a dancer at carnivals in Nigeria and they play a lot of Dancehall. I grew up listening to Shabba Ranks and the greats of the 90ties.

Who do you feel is the most influential dancehall artiste?
Bounty Killer because he has been able to create a lot of talent like Vybz Kartel, Busy Signal, Mavado and many others. He has the most influence in Dancehall right now.

How did you feel when you were contacted about performing at Reggae Sumfest?
I felt very happy because it is something that I've always looked forward to.

What do you hope Jamaica will take away from your performance?
I want to be able to introduce jamaicans to my culture I want to know where I'm coming from .

You were in Jamaica earlier this year, what was that for?
I was there to do a video to my song Daniella Whine with Elephant man and Konshens.

How was the experience?
It was a very good experience, the people and country is beautiful. Even though the media doesnt show us what we need to hear, it was a good experience and I enjoyed it.

How was it working with Elephant Man and Konshens?
It was very nice. They are good people , they are my friends.

Preparations are ahead of schedule this year for one of Jamaica’s longest running Reggae festival, Reggae Sumfest. The show is slated for July 16-22 at Catherine Hall Entertainment Center in Montego Bay Jamaica. Sumfest’s twenty-fifth year will be the most special yet.

Patoranking

The festival’s Chairman Joe Bogdanovich told us that he is extra excited this year and apart from everything being on schedule, he has now opened the door to Nigeria, just one of the African nations he is planning on opening the show’s doors to.

Bogdanovich who is also C.E.O of Downsound Entertainment in Kingston has booked Nigerian Patoranking for the show. Patoranking will be the first artiste booked to perform on a Jamaican show and will perform on the island on Reggae Sumfest’s International night.

Bogdanovich

The show’s international night was axed last year and only accommodated local Jamaican acts but according to Bogdanovich, ‘Since Patoranking’s song ,‘’My woman’’ took over the Jamaican airways, we had to include him in our lineup, it is a big deal. Jamaicans love their African brothers and sisters and more than half the island will make their way to Catherine Hall to see the show’.
Other international artistes who will perform include Canadian Hip Hop artiste Tony Lanez who is not Jamaican but if of Jamaican heritage. Performances by Jamaican artistes Sean Paul, Alkaline, Sizzla, Mavado, Bounty Killer, Queen Ifrica, Sean Kingston, Beenie Man, Christopher Martin, and Jah Cure.

Reggae Sumfest, is slated to become an international fixture and will include a virtual reality steam that will show real time coverage for those who will be watching via live stream at ReggaeSumfest.com

Downsound Entertainment and Reggae Sumfest would like to welcome all Nigerians to watch the show in the comfort of their homes or business.
