Do you live in Surulere, Lagos? Or did you attend Rabiatu Thompson Memorial School, Surulere? Seriously, could you have imagined that school would ever look this good?

On Friday last week, May 25th 2012, Etisalat Nigeria handed over a brand new fully re-constructed primary school with 3 blocks of 15 classrooms, modern (*tush*) toilets and administrative offices, to the Lagos state government. The biggest part for me is that, Etisalat Nigeria is adopting the Rabiatu Thompson Memorial School FOR LIFE! That means as long as Rabiatu Thompson Memorial School exists, Etisalat would take care of it! Continue...
Rabiatu Thompson is a public primary school in the heart of Surulere. Way back in 2011, Etisalat Nigeria demolished the school’s ‘vomitable’ (just coined that word; it means: dreadful!)  structure, re-designed and re-constructed it. Not kidding! Before you say Linda has come again, check out the before and after photos *pouting*.
Etisalat also inspected every stage of the construction work until the company was satisfied with the new environment which is more suitable for a child to learn in.

Etisalat, the fastest growing telecommunications company in Nigeria, made a decision three years back to make education one of its priority areas, and created the Adopt-a-School initiative as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility CSR to Nigeria.

Babatunde Fashola, the Lagos State governor, was represented at the re-commissioning of the school by the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye. The CEO, Etisalat Nigeria, Mr. Steven Evans was there also along with Board Member of the company, Mr. Kayode Sofola.
Etisalat Nigeria has now adopted three schools, namely: Akande Dahunsi Memorial High School, Ikoyi; Edward Blyden Primary School, Lagos Island and Rabiatu Thompson Memorial Primary School, Surulere. All these schools are in Lagos and all have been adopted for life.

It was a tragic end for at least ten persons burnt to death in a multiple accident near Mowe in the Obafemi/Owode Local Government Area of Ogun state in the wee hour of yesterday. The auto mishap that occurred few metres to Redeemed Camp involved a trailer loaded with petroleum product which rammed into some trucks parked along the sideways of the popular dual carriage way.

According to an eyewitness account, the accident occurred when a Lagos bound trailer with number plate, Kebbi, XB370ZUR rammed into some of the petrol tankers haphazardly parked on the two sides of the expressway.

The witness further stated that immediately after the collision, the tankers went up in flames, burning both the heavy trucks parked along the road and some motor boys caught unaware. The accident caused heavy traffic jam along the every busy road, forcing many motorists and passengers to divert their routes. It was a hectic day for officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), and the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, (TRACE) as well as the Police controlling traffic. An official of the FRSC who spoke with Daily Sun on condition of anonymity, lamented the accident, recalling that there had been frantic efforts by the Commission to dissuade truck drivers from parking haphazardly on the expressway.

“It is a sad event, but we have tried to no avail to dissadude drivers from parking along the road, because of accident like this,” he lamented. Reacting to the accident yesterday, the concessionaire of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Bi-Courtney Highway Services Limited, noted that it had always complained that trailers parking on the roadside are hazardous.

The concessionaire said it had created eight temporary trailer parks along the expressway to take heavy trucks off the road shoulders, but drivers still park carelessly along the road. “You will recollect that the concessionaire has offered to build permanent trailer parks on the road, which could have solved the problem, but the move did not receive the support of the Ogun State government through the acquisition of land.

“You will also recollect that at the swearing-in ceremony of Ibikunle Amosun as the governor of Ogun State he promised to build some parks within 90 days and actually took possession, although unlawfully, of Bi-Courtney’s land, meant for the asphalt plant, ostensibly to build a trailer park.”The signposts of the trailer park are to be found at the location but nothing more seems to have happened.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a mother of six, identified as Mrs Adaba Onitemi, who ingested 839 grams of substance believed to be cocaine, valued at about N10 million, at the Port Harcourt International Airport.

Mrs Onitemi, 54 and a widow was arrested while attempting to board a London-bound Lufthansa Airline, following suspicion by operatives of the NDLEA at the Airport about 8:30p.m on May 23.

NDLEA Commander, Port Harcourt International Airport, Olutekunbi Davies, who disclosed this to journalists on Wednesday, said the suspect was taken to the military hospital in the state capital where she was found to have ingested the substance.

On May 23 , 2012, at about 8:30p.m, a female drug suspect, Mrs Adaba Sekinatu Onitemi, 54, was arrested while attempting to board a Lufthansa Airline on her way to London via Frankfurt.

“She was taken to Military Hospital Port Harcourt where the X-ray scanner used on her proved positive for ingestion of substances suspected to be cocaine. She has since then excreted 58 wraps weighing 839grammes,” Davies said.

The NDLEA commander disclosed that the substance would be valued about N10million, pointing out that no fewer than three drug suspects had been arrested in similar circumstances at the airport in the last two years.

Speaking further, Davies explained that the agency had pulled out its detecting machines at the airport due to ongoing renovation work at the airport, saying the situation had posed some challenges in tracking drug peddlers, but noted that its operatives were well trained to rise to any given occasion.

Davies further disclosed that suspected drug peddlers now concealed such illicit items in processed food cans to avoid being detected, which was why the agency was using sniffer dogs, saying, “the present chairman of the NDLEA has zero tolerance for compromise and any of our men found wanting will be shown the way out.”

Although, the suspect maintained a studied silence when newsmen attempted to get her comments, an operative of the NDLEA, who claimed had chatted with her, told newsmen that 54-year old Mrs Onitemi was a mother of six and that she lost her husband in 1999

Exciting news reaching us this morning is that 6-year old Kosisochukwu Akilo who was kidnapped from her home in Enugu has been rescued.

A source within the Akilo family revealed to Cruise Nigeria that she was found in Warri, Delta state yesterday.

The circumstances surrounding her release remain uncertain as it was earlier reported that the kidnappers were yet to contact the traumatized family.

“She was released today” (yesterday) the source said, “But she’s still in Warri. Tomorrow she’ll be home. But this is great  news, and the entire family is pleased that this horrible dilemma is finally over.”

Kosisochukwu was abducted on Sunday morning May 13, 2012. It’s been almost three weeks since her kidnap and it must have been a terrible time for her family and friends.

She was kidnapped from her home in Enugu state and found in Warri, Delta state. The little angel must have gone through a tough period but thank God she’s been found.

This is certainly the best news I’ve heard all week and a great way to start the new month. Thank God for her safe return. Hopefully by now, she is already at home with her family and friends.
449  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / The Sad Plight of a 10 Year-Old Girl on: 1-06-2012 01:46 PM
There are several adverse consequences of child segxwal abuse; several reasons why parents, guardians, the family and the society must protect young children from the scourge.

Studies have shown that children who are abused segxwally can suffer a range of psychological and behavioral problems, from mild to severe, in both the short and long term. These problems typically include depression, anxiety, guilt, fear, segxwal dysfunction, withdrawal, and acting out. Depending on the severity of the incident, victims of segxwal abuse may also develop fear and anxiety regarding the opposite sex or segxwal issues and may display inappropriate segxwal behavior. However, the strongest indication that a child has been segxwally abused is inappropriate segxwal knowledge, segxwal interest, and segxwal acting out by that child.

The story of a 10-year old girl, a victim of segxwal abuse who revealed recently that she cannot do without having sex with men daily is both sad and shocking.

She was segxwally abused at the age of 7 by an old man who was her neighbour at Mile 12, Lagos State. The man whom she called Baba lived with her Aunt in the same compound.

The Primary Two pupil confessed that if she did not see any man to have sex with her in her area, she would go to a popular under bridge at Mile 12 Lagos and beg for sex from touts.

She came from Enugu state to live with her aunt in Lagos after the death of her father. She said the man (Baba) usually called her to his apartment whenever his wife and her aunt were not around and will put his finger inside her private part.

“He will tell me to come back home immediately our school closes and when I reach home he will be waiting for me to finger my honeypot,” she narrated.

She said with time he started having real sex with her.

After the man man moved out of their area, she resorted to meeting other men in the area without her aunt knowing. She said she has become addicted to sex and cannot do without it.

“When I desire sex and I do not see anybody to do it in my area, I will go under the bridge and beg the touts to do it for me,” she said.

The young girl’s teacher who noticed some abnormal behavior in the girl was able to get her to admit to her problem. The teacher contacted her aunt who contacted an NGO for assistance. Community Health Support and Empowerment Initiative, COHSAEI, has now taken up the challenge to rehabilitate her.

The programme coordinator of the NGO, Mrs. Priscilla Ingbia, noted that her case was very pathetic because of her age. She said her group took up the challenge to rehabilitate her because it was clear if nothing was done urgently her future was in danger. She said her organisation has started the process of rehabilitating her by carrying out series of tests on her to ascertain her health conditions.

It is hoped that this young girl would find some kind of solution to her plight and find the much needed succor. She is really too young to go through such stuff.

What can be done to prevent segxwal abuse of children in the society? What signs should parents and guardians look out for in their children at all times? What steps can be taken to rehabilitate this young girl?
450  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Tragedy: University graduate dies hours after taking her NYSC Call up letter on: 1-06-2012 01:33 PM
In this age of weird happenings and increasing violence and tragedies, there are still some stories that bring sad tears to the eyes. One of such heart-wrenching stories is that of Temitayo Omoniyi, a fresh graduate of the University of Ibadan who studied English and Literary Studies.

The 21-year-old, having passed out with flying colours, was posted to Ogun State for her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Traveling down to her university recently to collect her call up letter, she used the opportunity to greet friends and members of the Redeemed Christian Fellowship of which she was a member when she was on campus. Unknown to the victim, she was mingling with friends and acquaintances for the last time. By the next day, Saturday, March 3, while she was travelling home to Ilesha in order to prepare for her trip to the NYSC camp in Sagamu, Ogun State, she was involved in fatal motor accident. Sadly, after lying in coma for one week in the hospital, she died on March 10, 2012.

After her death, many of her friends and former colleagues who are still reeling from the shock of her passage recounted the last 24 hours of her life.

Akinremi Kehinde, one of her friends recalled their few-minutes-encounter less than 24 hour before the tragedy. “On Friday, I saw her at the Students Union building and we exchanged pleasantries. I asked her where she’d been posted and she told me it was Ogun state. I retorted jokingly that she “worked” it. She answered, saying “It is God oh!”

Another friend, Akinoso Abiodun, a unit leader of the Redeemed Christian Fellowship affirming that “the news of her death came as a shock”, recalled that “on Friday we chatted before she travelled to her home town (Ilesha).”
In tears, she described the deceased as “gentle, aspiring, nice and caring young woman.”

According to Seye Joseph, “she called me on Friday evening that she had collected her NYSC called up letter at University of Ibadan and was posted to Ogun State. She said she will not be able to come to the Brand Maximization seminar I organized for associations in the Polytechnic Ibadan on Saturday. I said congratulations, God bless you, and I will call you later. I could not call her in the night as I promised her because I was very tired preparing for the seminar. Around 4:30 a.m., I sent a message to her wishing her well in all her endeavours in life. By 6:39 a.m., she replied my text wishing me well on the programme. Unfortunately, I never knew that will be our last conversation in life and on earth.”

When the deceased was buried in her home town of Ilesa, Osun State, on March 13, 2012, delegates from the Student Union, the Redeemed Christian Fellowship and the Department of English attended the burial to pay their last respect.

Many are still lamenting the timing of her death. “After all the sufferings in school, after graduating with flying colours, just at the time she was supposed to begin to reap the fruits of her hard labour, it was then that death came calling. It’s painful; it’s unfortunate, it’s not fair” a friend lamented.

451  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / WHAT WE WANT FROM JONATHAN –Abiola’s Family on: 1-06-2012 01:29 PM
As the controversy rages over the renaming of the University of Lagos after the late Chief Moshood Abiola, the family of the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 has demanded for a fresh enquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death.

“There was need for the Federal Government to revisit the circumstances surrounding the death of Chief Abiola in order to effectively bring to end that dark period in Nigerian history and prevent a re-occurrence to any citizen irrespective of his/her tribe, religion, political leaning or station in life,” Mrs. Hafsat Abiola-Costello, the daughter of the late business mogul said in a statement on Thursday.

While applauding the gesture of President Goodluck Jonathan to honour the memory of Abiola by renaming the University of Lagos after him, Abiola-Costello said the best way to immortalise his father was through transparent, free and fair elections, obedience to the rule of law, due process and banishment of injustice and poverty in Nigeria.

Abiola-Costello described her father as an icon of democracy who held unto the mandate given to him in the most free and fair presidential elections ever held in Nigeria till date. “It was the sacrifices of pro-democracy activists, the supreme price paid by my father and other martyrs that led to the current civil rule,” she said.
452  Forum / Politics / Why I’m bringing Imo people close to the government -Asugha on: 31-05-2012 04:42 PM
The Special Assistant to the Imo State governor on Public Affairs, Lisa Asugha is noted as the youngest appointee among the Okorocha’s cabinet, and since the history and handover of power to the civilian government in Imo state. This warm and charming personality that is poised to deliver has unfolded her plans of bringing the people close to the government. Lisa who is marked for her talent in leadership has never failed to inspire her contemporaries and admirers. In this interview with UGOCHUKWU FAVOUR-MAYOR, the fair-skinned and pretty Lisa who could be credited as a socialite and showbiz practitioner speaks on her political appointment, the controversial 4-tier community government and other burning issues heralding the Governor Anayo Rochas Okorocha’s government.

Background

Lisa Asugha Chinwe is from Nkwerre Local Government of Imo State, the South Eastern part of Nigeria. As a pacesetter, at the age of 16 she founded a youth based organization called Prodigy Global Network. This Youth Organization saddled itself with the responsibility of discovering the hidden potentials in youths and to harness them into impacting their world positively.

This organization driven by vision and insight from God was able to make these youths achieve their dreams by creating a link to agencies and securing them contract jobs in their different areas such as music, film, adverts etc. Lisa herself has also done couple of billboards. Youths that have crossed Lisa’s path have all become proponents of change. She has also worked for the success of most philanthropic outfits globally, and which through her passion to help women and people to enhance their personal style and quality of life have ones granted her an invite by the United Nations for the Women congress in New York.

Politics

For those who might take Lisa as one of those who returned home for appointment, it’s quite a wrong thought. After her graduation from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria with Bsc Economics and an Msc in Human Resource Management & Development from the University of Leicester, she got herself into the youthful position of public relations manager at the office of the Rochas Foundation / Rochas Group.

It is quite evident that Governor Okorocha chooses to surround himself with professionals, following Lisa’s appointment that came from her outstanding services while at Rochas Firm; she got retained by the Imo State number one citizen to serve in the capacity of Special Assistant on Public Affairs.

Also from the outstanding services Lisa rendered, she noted that she coordinated media relations; she wrote and placed press releases and announcements as they fit the organization’s needs. She produced an outstanding website that members and others turn to for information, one that enhanced the organization’s image, answers frequently asked questions, and gives insight on the organization, she stressed that her duties then included assisting with agendas, coordinating meetings, and helping with other organizational aspects.

Currently, she acts as an interface between the Imo State Government and the Public. Interestingly, she is the youngest in the cabinet. So far, her organizational skills have been brought to bear and the Imolites are better for it. As she would always say “she is grateful to the governor for such an opportunity to serve and be part of history in the Imo Rescue Mission Agenda of the current administration.

People oriented programmes

She opined that her state is the first of its kind in the Nigerian history to run a 4-tier system of government which is rooted among the community speakers, adding that it would bring development and economic boom to the grass root level, as the governor who she says believe in selfless services is focused at channeling development to the rural communities.

Also, she stressed that the state is also providing free quality education, whereby students are given free school materials like socks, bags, books, shoes, and even paid a stipend for schooling. In fact even when the Federal Government was debating on if to pay workers their N18, 000 minimum wages, she admitted that her state is freely paying N20, 000 to workers. On other human oriented programmes the Imo State government has engaged, she said, “for security control, the state has launched operation community policing with over 100 policing vehicles. As if that’s not enough, the state embarked on the welfare of its pensioners and paid them pensions been owed over 13 years and also established the Imo foundation to cater for the needy and down trodden in Imo state. The governor is also committed to take Imo State to the next level, because he is working and still working, in a short while, people would see more of his projects,” she enthused.

Complacent with the job

As a hardworking lady, she has effortlessly being able to balance work, family, relationship, and personal relationship with God and business.

According to her, “being successful is being able to balance all spheres of your life”. Also, with intimidating educational background, all from human resource management and development, Lisa’s human relations and management prowess could be described as being unequalled.

Philosophy

She believes the greatest asset one can have is human capital. She has taking resilience, discipline, humility, pragmatism and of course penchant for excellence, as part of her leadership traits.

Outfit

She has been able to set a noble example of what the Imo people should expect from her political position with the success she has been able to acquire from her private business outfit known as Extravaganze weddings & events, based in Abuja. This outfit which was established out of her passion on creativity and perfection is today one of the biggest event outfits in Nigeria. This outfit which has become synonymous to exceptional events management and decoration has its policy as never to create two same events. Lisa also confirmed it, “every event has its own creation of a unique theme and setting. I’m always happy to get a “wow” expression from my clients; I am just living my dream.”

With burning desires to enhance and promote quality and exceptional event designs in the country, many outfitters keep wondering the magic behind Lisa vision. She disclosed that she has been able to travel far and wide for idea development. In her words, “with Extravaganze, I plan, design and style wedding and events in Abuja, throughout Nigeria as well as destination weddings and events abroad. My years and training in the United Kingdom and United States has given me the exposure and in-depth understanding of the event world and what it takes to create an out-of –this world, state of art events. I employ a holistic vision and professionalism for every wedding and special event planning to ensure that every detail is reflected in the overall vision and ambience of an event”.

Motivation

Lisa remains a personality that would always say no to failure. She has got this disarming posture that where people failed she has always got result. Socially, she is balanced. Religiously, she is a devout Christian and will always be caught investing her business with God as the steer man and this has undoubtedly worked for her. She is a people oriented person, and always wearing a smile and trying to make a change for humanity.

On air programme

Another way of communication proffered by Lisa’s bureau for people to communicate well with government’s policy is that of the radio programme.

According to her, “Wetin Una think” Radio Programme is a Public Affairs thing that is Live on radio, Orient FM 94.4 and it comes every Wednesday by 12.05noon. It allows people to call in to tell us what they think government is doing that is right or wrong, and also complain on various issues affecting them. The programme has a wide spread audience

and we have been getting good progress report.”

Managing the 4-tier government

Today, Imolites are made to understand that the community government council that earlier caused a stir would comprise the traditional ruler of the community, a president-general, a youth leader, a woman leader, and a community liaison officer, all of who would be elected by the communities themselves under option A4, and they would also preside for the government and the people. The aim of the community government council, according to Asugha in one of the radio programmes, is to bring about evenly spread development in the rural areas of the state; whereby attracting unprecedented development to communities in the state, making Imo the most developed state in the country.

She also emphasized that her bureau is designing a 4-tier system of government portal: “The Bureau has designed a portal for progress reports, evaluation and rating of all communities in Imo state. This portal would serve for citizens from every community to monitor and be aware of what is happening in their communities,” she disclosed.

Corporate relationship

Public affair being a term used to describe the government relationship with stakeholders, Lisa has been able to engage top stakeholders to explain the government policies, provide statistical and factual information on how to lobby issues which could impact upon the government’s ability to operate successfully.

The work according to her combines government relations, media communications, issue management, corporate and social responsibility information dissemination and strategic communications advice. She said, “It aims to influence public policies, build and maintain a strong reputation and find a common ground amongst stakeholders, and also building relationships with major companies in Imo State. They have been notified in carrying out their various corporate social responsibilities like Job creation, community development, local content and we have designed giving awards to companies that make a difference and to showcase such companies.”

Expectation

“We are building a database of information for the various stakeholders and interest groups. What are some key pieces of information/data that people need on a day-to-day basis that needs to be computerized and can be put into a database? Examples that come to mind are: secondary school results, university results, driver’s license information, immunization records, birth records, marriage certificates, and many others.

“The bureau of Public affairs is collecting data to create a database for easy retrieval. The plus is that information becomes readily available; data/information that people or businesses would find most useful. The bureau has been hosting Special series of talks and Town hall meetings spotlighting key issues that are important to the state. And every month we do a series of PR Campaigns, we invite a guest speaker to speak on an issue for the month. It could be a topic on healthcare, education, power, water, culture etc. The Bureau has also created a calendar for Imo state and every month has theme, which in short time, Imo will totally be transformed”.

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, yesterday, arrested five suspected drug traffickers in connection with a large shipment of heroin worth N2.2 billion from Pakistan at the Tin Can Island Port, Lagos.
The agency also arrested a lady, (names withheld) over substance suspected to be cocaine at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, Rivers State.
The lady allegedly ingested 839 grammes of the substance, and was arrested while on her way to board a London-bound Lufthansa Airline. She was
taken to the Military Hospital,  Port Harcourt, where the substance was confirmed in her.
The lady, a mother of six and a widow, it was gathered, had since excreted the substance weighing 839 grammes.
Meanwhile, Chairman of NDLEA, Alhaji Ahmadu Giade, who addressed newsmen, in Lagos, on the shipment, said it was the agency’s first seizure of a large quantity of heroin in collaboration with British authorities.
He said: “The unadulterated heroin weighing 113.49kg was industrially- concealed in three moulding machines imported from Islamabad, Pakistan, in a 20-feet container. The search was conducted at the Ikoyi, Lagos, headquarters of the agency.
“A total of 109 wraps weighing 113.49kg of heroin was imported into the country through the Tin Can Island Port, Lagos. The illicit consignment was cleared from the Tin Can Port but anti-narcotic operatives working on intelligence trailed the container to Okota, Lagos, where it was intercepted. This is the first seizure made at the seaport this year by NDLEA and the estimated street value of the drug is N2.2 billion.”

A United States-based Nigerian, Emeka Mazie, yesterday dragged his 96-year-old father to court for insisting to re-marry after the demise of his wife eight years ago. The suit with number HU/54/2012 filed before the Umuahia High Court 4, is presided over by Justice Agwu Kalu.
Counsel to the defendant, Miss Ebere Orji, told the court that her client, Chief Israel Mazie, and father of Emeka, had contracted a marriage with Ebere Ndubuka under the Marriage Act.
She noted that his children from the
late wife (Emeka’s mother)  had continued to obstruct the marriage, pointing out that his client was hale and hearty and entered the marriage with his whole mind.
She maintained that the plaintiff and only son of Israel with his sisters was duly informed before the marriage was contracted but regretted that they made a u-turn to stop the union.
Counsel to the Plaintiff, Mrs Ann Uchendu, told the court that Israel and Ndubuka had yet to consummate their marriage traditionally.
She pointed out that the defendants secretly obtained a marriage certificate from Bende Local Government Area of Abia State.
She also told the court that Ndubuka, 40, had been boosting that she “must marry Israel under any condition”.
Kalu after listening to both counsel asked Israel why he wanted another wife.
He told the parties to explore alternative means of resolving the matter peacefully in the interest of the family.
“I have examined this man (Israel), even though he is old, the papers before me do not show he is either mental nor senile.
“The L.C.M. of this matter is for the parties to return home and find a more peaceful way of sorting out this matter,” Kalu said.
He urged the parties to respect the views of each other, noting that at the plaintiff’s age he would never wish away his first son or the son abandon the father.
Kalu added that resorting to alternative dispute resolution became imperative as there was no serious dispute to judge on the case. He adjourned the matter to October 24 for report on settlement.
Israel told the court that his decision to re-marry was to get somebody to cook and assist him in keeping the compound clean.
“Since my wife died eight years ago, nobody cooks or assists in cleaning the compound for me. All my children live in America,” he claimed.
The plaintiff told the court that he received with shock the plans of his father to re-marry at his age. He said: “if my father must get another wife, he ought to discuss it with me.”

I know some people want to put bloggers against her. People should stop dragging others down.

Angola's Seydou and Esperanca are finally leaving StarGame for good. After being indecisive  for weeks, the Angolan duo eventually agreed to disagree and left the show. Though Seydou was not keen on leaving, Esperanca was adamant that she wanted to leave as soon as possible.
"I feel sorry for my partner and I wish things would be different. I'm stressed out, depressed and I am not going to put my health in danger," Esperanca explained.

An evidently furious Seydou expressed how unfair Esperanca is and threatened that "It will be chaos out there," as he walked out of the Diary Room.
This is the second couple to voluntarily exit StarGame after the Nigerian duo of Chris and Ola who had to leave due to Ola's health condition.
This means that 12 Housemates have left Downville in three weeks with only two upgraded to Upville.

460  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Masquerade rapes undergraduate nursing mother on: 31-05-2012 03:29 PM
Tension mounts in Opi, Nsukka Local Government Area, Enugu State as masquerades took turn in the series of rape stories synonymous with the community.  The alleged rape of a female student, Ngozika Ugwu, presented mixed feelings and reactions to what may have bedevilled the community in the recent past.
Rape stories in Opi, a community in the university town of Nsukka, have occupied major national dailies, hitting banner headlines, from the three quarters that make up the community, Idi, Ogbozalla and Ibeku.
In 2011, the story of the rape of women between 70 and 80 years spread like wild fire in the country, raising eyebrows on the motive for such inhuman and barbaric act by, especially, youths of the community. Some of them  were fingered and allegedly arrested, interrogated by the police but could not be persecuted because of want of  evidence.

Following this development, Ada Enugu Women Organisation led by  Mrs. Kate Ezeofor stormed the community for a church service at St. Charles Catholic Church parish, Opi to cleanse the land and the old women that were defiled.

Few months later, Opi women took to the streets in protest of yet another rape at Ogbozalla–Opi. The protest attracted the quick intervention of the Chairman, Nsukka Local Government Council, Mr. Tony Ugwu who invited all the stakeholders in the community to discuss the ugly development and proffer solutions. Though it was later discovered that the protest had political undertone, the council boss brokered peace to the satisfaction of all.

Barely few months of enjoying peace in the area, masquerades took turn in the series of rape stories in the community by defiling a 28-year-old undergraduate nursing mother.  The victim told Crime Alert in tears that the trauma of the rape will forever live with her but stated that she had forgiven the rapists.

While narrating her ordeal, she appealed to local, state and federal governments to ensure that truth prevails in this country by fighting for the poor masses.  Ngozi, who dropped out from her NCE programme at the Enugu State College of Education (Technical)due to lack of funds after her ordeal, called on concerned Nigerians to come to her aid to enable her go back to school.

She also hinted that the release of one of the suspects on the flimsy excuse that he was going to write his JAMB examination was not encouraging, attributing it to the fact that her family is poor and helpless.

Her story:
It happened on March 21, 2012. There were three masquerades that day but two were spotted and people started running. I was going to fetch water and as people were running, I equally ran and hid somewhere until the two masquerades passed. After the masquerades passed, I came out and continued with my journey. Soon, I heard a child saying that another masquerade was coming. I didn’t see the masquerade but people were running and I ran to enter into someone’s house.

The masquerade emerged from a corner (apiam way) and pushed me into the building where I was running to. I tried to escape but could not. It caught up with me and started beating me. What surprised me was that the masquerade said it has been looking for me for long and had now caught up with me. I sought to know what I did to deserve such treatment and at the same time pleading for forgiveness but it continued with its threat.
This time, it swore to take me to a bigger masquerade inside the forest, saying it has been long I had been insulting them. My cries for help and that I was a nursing a baby fell on deaf ears. As the masquerade was dragging me along, a man with wrapper came and pleaded with the masquerade to leave me but it refused, saying that I have insulted them for too long. It insisted on taking me to the bigger masquerade which will compel my clan to bring a cow as sacrifice.
All my pleadings with the man who came to my rescue failed. The masquerade dragged me to a bush path, threw me on the ground fell on me. It held me on the neck to prevent me from shouting and blocked both my eyes and nose.  At this stage, I nearly lost consciousness until one man came and rescued me from its grip. He removed the face of the masquerade and that was how he was identified. As soon as he was identified, he ran away.
More people gathered there and helped to take me where I was given first aid treatment at a chemist before I was taken to St. Joseph Hospital, Opi. I didn’t know when I was taken to the hospital. When I started gaining consciousness, I did not see my pant and my bra was torn. It was then I realised that the masquerade raped me. Fear gripped me that the masquerade may have transmitted HIV/AIDS into me.
Doctor’s report altered
We went to Nsukka police station and reported the incident. I was surprised that police did not come to the scene of the incident to investigate my claims. What the police did was to take me to a police doctor, Mercy Clinic along University Market Road, Nsukka. It is surprising that a doctor will give evidence against me in a case of rape I reported. Later, police invited me to their office for interrogation.

When I tried to give details of what happened, they shouted that I should shut up and go straight to speak on the doctor’s findings on the case. Surprisingly, the Police asked me to write a letter of apology claiming that the doctor’s report said I was not raped. I did not read the report nor see it. I was forced to write an apology by the police.
While all these were happening, no police officer came to the hospital to take my statement. All the time, nurses would remove drips from my hand so that I would go to the police station to honour their invitation. The masquerade was allegedly arrested and hurriedly released on the flimsy excuse that he was going to write JAMB exams.
Pleas for forgiveness
While I was still recuperating, the mother of the suspected person in the masquerade came and pleaded that his son should be forgiven.  I told his mother that I have forgiven him. What annoyed me most was that some of his relations which included a policeman that works in Enugu, returned home and instead of sympathizing with me, they took sides in favor of their brother.  At a stage, I was forced to go to the police station to close the case.
No refund of expenditure
The police said that I should not be paid what my family spent in the case and that the family of the suspect should only pay for my hospital bill. The rapist family paid the hospital bill grudgingly.  Later, the police invited us again and this time, they asked me to write that I was not raped and I was forced to write that I was not raped. The boy who raped me gave police his name as Asogwa Ifeanyi but people who knew him said, his real names are Ugwunshi Ifeanyi.
The police did not also make efforts to invite the witness in the case while the investigation was going on rather, after they concluded that I was not raped, they tried to invite him but he ignored them.
My Education
I dropped out from Enugu state college of education (Technical) due to lack of fund. I was a second year student when I dropped. I entered the tertiary institution in 2007/2008 session.  For now, it is very difficult to continue with my education after all I have gone through. My father is a mason (Brick layer) at Uzo-Uwani L.G.A, Enugu State. We are five children born to my father and mother.
I am the only daughter.
Police reacts when Crime Alert visited Nsukka Police station, it was gathered that the incumbent Divisional police officer had not assumed office when the matter was incidented but a senior police officer who pleaded anonymity disclosed that a case of assault, occasioning harm was reported at the station but not rape as claimed by the lady stating that the people of the area are very troublesome. “Any small thing in the area, they will term it rape and rush to the press. You can trace the lady to Opi and find out  from her, all that was reported is a case of assault occasioning harm.”
Police Doctor speaks
The police doctor, Dr. Ugwu who reportedly examined Ngozika told Crime Alert that he can’t remember such a matter any longer. “I meet different cases and patients on daily basis. Give me sometime to get across to the police to find out the very incident”.
Elders action
Investigations by Crime Alert revealed that the elders in the community, on hearing the rape story, took action by banning masquerades from operating in the area regretting that youths cashed on masquerade which are meant for entertainment to perpetuate all sorts of evil, painting the community in a bad public image. They also reportedly resolved that the family of the masquerade rapist must bring a cow to cleanse the land, or else they will be ostracized.
