Liverpool Fc News

Liverpool Fc has been on a decline in recent years, having to struggle to maintain stay at the top.

Liverpool Fc News – Jose Enrique charges teammates

Reuters-On Wednesday defender Jose Enrique have charged teammates for more self-belief if they are to push for a top four berth this season after their 3-1 defeat at Stoke City.

The loss followed their impressive 4-0 win over Fulham at the weekend and left Liverpool in 10th, eight points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

Spain’s Enrique, who joined from Newcastle United in 2011, said he thought Liverpool would win when they took the lead through a Steven Gerrard penalty after two minutes but the visitors’ advantage lasted just three minutes.

“We have to get a winning mentality going and we have to show what we are all about,” Enrique said on the club’s website (www.liverpoolfc.com).

“We need more experience and need to show more character in these type of games. You can see we have quality players and we have a good squad, but we need to fight for every point we play for if we want to be in the top four.”

Stoke used their physical superiority to score twice through Jonathan Walters, who levelled the game after five minutes and registered his second early in the second half, while strike partner Kenwyne Jones was also on target.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers bemoaned bad luck for Walters’ first goal but said his team simply had to be better to keep out the opposition if they were to be more consistent.

“We were terrific at the weekend but you have got to be able to put a run of games together. That’s been the nature of the group over the last couple of years in terms of where we have finished,” Rodgers said.

Liverpool would be looking at  the brighter side given the upcoming matches.

4  Forum / Sports / Basketball Among Nigeria’s Big Sports — Ekeji on: 10-08-2012 04:44 PM
Director General National Sports Commission and Nigeria’s Chef de Mission to the Olympic Games, Patrick Ekeji has revealed that because of the feat posted by the Nigerian basketball team from the qualifying stage in Venezuela to the Olympics in London, it has joined the big sports in the country.

Ekeji, yesterday at the Nigerian House said football, track and field and basketball are now Nigeria’s big sports. He said Nigeria now has comparative advantage in these sports especially interms of raw materials. “The issue of developing five sports where Nigeria has comparative advantage will always generate comments.

There will always be comments but football, track and field and basketball are some sports where we have comparative advantage interms of raw materials.”

5  Forum / Sports / FG Disappointed At Nigeria’s Olympics Outing —Bolaji on: 10-08-2012 04:39 PM
The Minister of Sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, on Thursday expressed the Federal Government’s disappointment at the dismal performance of Team Nigeria at the ongoing London 2012 Olympics.

Speaking at a press conference tagged “Nigeria Olympic Review” at the Nigeria House in Stratford, London, the minister admitted that poor preparations marred the country’s chances at the games.  “Our inability to win any medal so far is as disappointing for my team and myself and for all Nigerians everywhere.  “But we must have the courage to see it as it is. This is a clear testimony to how far our sports has fallen behind,” Abdullahi noted.

He, however, said he would not indulge in a blame game but would take the dismal performance as “an opportunity to rebuild.”

The minister, who described the situation as a “crisis,” said it was “the necessary disequilibrium required for serious actions and drastic change.  We will not allow this opportunity to pass.”  He stated, “Having been appointed Minister of Sports only two months to the Olympics, I have had to learn very quickly.

“And I have not received a better lesson than in the last two weeks of London 2012.  “We have been hoping too much on luck, but for once, God is telling us he’s not a magician.”

He praised Team Nigeria for putting up a brave showing at the Olympics, noting, “Our athletes tried their best. We can only hope to build on what they have done.

“According to a Yoruba saying, as you pose for a camera that is how you will appear. There’s no magic.”

Meanwhile Minister of sports and Chairman National Sports Commission Bolaji Abdullahi is already looking ahead of Nigeria’s disappointing outing in the 2012 Olympic Games by planning a way forward for Nigerian sports. Speaking yesterday at the Nigerian House alongside Team Nigeria’s top shots that included DG National Sports Commission, Dr Patrick Ekeji, NOC president, Engr. Sani Ndanusa and IOC member Engr. Habu Gumel, he revealed that Nigeria was not going to win the Olympics in the first place, but had come to better past performances.

“We came with 51 sports men and women to participate in 8 sports. Even though we did not expect to win, we arrived here to show decent showing and surpass past Olympics achievement. We undertook short but intensive training and our athletes had the best training. London had the best preparation and for this reason we paid attention and commitment on athletes’ welfare.

We believed with this we should wi medals. But I am

Disappointed and this needs scientific diagnosis. It is also a clear t estimony of how sports have fallen.”

Speaking with MTNFootball.com from Moscow, the CSKA Moscow winger said he was sad about the incident but at the same grateful to God that no life was lost.

"Armed robbers attacked my house in Kano today (Wednesday). I was sad when the gateman called to inform me of the robbery, but I thank God nobody was killed,” Musa disclosed.

“They gained entrance to the house through the fence and they carted away electronics and many of my personal effects."

Last year, Musa got married in Kano, where he featured for Kano Pillars before he moved to Europe.

8  Forum / Sports / Brazil blasts London Games’ officials over women’s soccer loss on: 3-08-2012 12:55 PM
BRAZILIAN women soccer team has accused London 2012 organisers of a “disgraceful” plot that led to its shock defeat by Great Britain on Tuesday.

Members of the Brazilian side were infuriated when they were stranded by the side of a highway for five hours as their team bus broke down on its journey to London the night before the Group E clash at Wembley Stadium. Britain won the game 1-0.

“It was a disgrace,” coach Jorge Barcellos said. “I wasn’t impressed, a tournament of this size and the delay in taking any initiative to resolve the situation was absurd.”

Brazil left its base in Cardiff, about 150 miles to the west of London, for its journey to the capital, but the trip was quickly disrupted when the bus pulled over to the side of the road with mechanical trouble.

The driver reportedly was unable to call for help and the squad was forced to endure an interminable wait. Eventually, another London 2012 official bus was waved down but, according to the Daily Telegraph, the second driver had already completed his hours quota and was not permitted to drive to London without a special permit.

A replacement bus finally arrived after another two hours, but Brazil did not reach its accommodation until late in the evening. A Brazilian journalist told Yahoo! Sports that instead of a typical light training session, the players went outside for a brisk walk and some stretching before retiring to bed.

The following night, Brazil made a sluggish start as Great Britain scored in the second minute for what would prove the only goal of the game. The defeat consigned the South Americans to second place in Group E, meaning they will now play World Cup champion, Japan, in Cardiff today.

Several unnamed Brazilian players have been reported in the Brazilian press as saying they believe the delay in finding a new driver or transportation was part of a deliberate attempt to affect their preparation.

According to Barcellos, “it was unacceptable. It is hard for the players to understand how this could possibly take so long, and playing Great Britain the next day.”

Brazilian soccer officials initially wanted to file a complaint to the International Olympic Committee but were persuaded not to by their national Olympic committee. Brazilian committee members felt it would be counter-productive to inflame the issue with Rio de Janeiro set to host the Games in 2016.

9  Forum / Sports / Rep backs Keshi on Mikel, Osaze on: 3-08-2012 12:52 PM
SUPER Eagles’ coach, Stephen Keshi, has been told not to succumb to pressure as he prepares his players for the all-important Africa Cup of Nations match against Liberia in September.

Ahmadu Fons Nwangubi, who represents Mayo Belwa, Jada, Ganye and Tuongo Federal Constituency of Adamawa State, said yesterday that Keshi deserves the right to exclude the likes of Chelsea’s midfielder John Obi Mikel and his counterpart in West Bromwich Albion, Osaze Odemwingie, from the team.

According to him, their replacements so far have proved that they can perform the duties better than the players.

Nwangubi, an ardent football follower, who runs a sports academy in his constituency, insisted in an interview with The Guardian that since Keshi has so far selected the best legs in the Nigerian League and they have not failed him in all their games, he should not be distracted with calls for the inclusion of the so-called big boys in the team.

He warned that doing so might re-introduce the era of mafia in the team, which contributed to the problem of the team. The former member of Adamawa State House of the Assembly maintained that the duo had in recent times presented themselves as bigger than the national team.

He noted that the coach has taken the right decision to keep them away from the team till the time they would declare their readiness to represent the country without any special attachment.

11  Forum / Sports / Everton Resign's Steven Pienaar to Goodison Park. on: 1-08-2012 12:04 PM
Latest Transfer News

Everton have secured the permanent return of Steven Pienaar to Goodison Park.

David Moyes declared earlier this summer that his priority was to bring the midfielder back to Everton on a long term basis and a deal has now been struck.

The South African star has put pen to paper on a four-year contract after Everton agreed a £4.5m fee with Tottenham.

He told evertontv: "I am happy to be here. It took a few weeks to sort out but I am delighted to be back and excited to play for Everton.

"There was no doubt in my mind that I would be back here. At the end of the season I told the manager how I felt and I am happy now it is all done."

Pienaar, 30, spent the second half of last season on loan at Everton, with his sparkling performances instantly catching the eye as he scored four goals in 14 games.

He had originally joined Everton in July 2007 on loan from Borussia Dortmund before that deal was made permanent a year later.

He left Goodison Park for Spurs in January 2011 but returned to Merseyside 12 months on, with opportunities at White Hart Lane limited.

Back in May he gave an emotional interview declaring his wish to remain with Everton and that has now become reality.

Pienaar will once again wear the number 22 jersey.

13  Forum / Sports / Manchester City Transfer Rumors : Man. City May Forfit Van Persie pursuit on: 25-07-2012 05:41 PM
Manchester City Transfer Rumors :

Arsenal’s forward Robin van Persie may be the next man who Manchester City want to help their quest for domination of European football, but the Premier League champions are taking a pragmatic approach to their transfer business this summer.

City are understood to be fuming over reports that manager Roberto Mancini is unhappy that the club are yet to sign Robin van Persie from Arsenal, with insiders insisting that the Italian was told when he signed a new contract that there would be no movement until players who featured in Euro 2012 returned from holiday.

Interim chief executive John Macbeath and football administration officer Brian Marwood want to free up space in the squad – and, crucially, the wage budget – to sign Van Persie by first offloading Emmanuel Adebayor.

The Togolese striker, who earns £170,000-a-week, is expected to join Spurs in a £5 million deal – although the move has hit a snag, with the former Arsenal man yet to agree personal terms to complete a switch to White Hart Lane.

City also expect to sell one of Edin Dzeko or Carlos Tevez to make more room for Van Persie, who is also a target for Manchester United and Juventus after declaring that he will not sign another contract with Arsenal, with his existing deal set to expire next summer.

While reports have suggested that United are currently favourites to land the Dutchman, City are confident of completing a deal and believe that Arsenal are trying to drag them in to an auction that does not exist.

Both United and Juve are unlikely to offer more than £15m for Van Persie, who turns 29 next month, with City ready to offer a higher fee and blow their rivals out of the water with a £198,000-a-week salary package.

Van Persie scored 30 Premier League goals last season and was double player of the year in England – and he would undoubtedly offer another dimension to the City attack alongside the likes of Sergio Ageuro and Mario Balotelli.
Manchester City Transfer Rumors :

The problem for City had been financial considerations as they look to comply with Uefa’s break-even rules having reported a £197m loss – the biggest in football history – in their last set of accounts.

The wages earned by the likes of Adebayor, Dzeko and Tevez – who earn nearly £600,000-a-week between them – mean that City have found it hard to sell players as potential buyers simply cannot meet their demands over personal terms.

Tevez, for example, has frequently been a target for AC Milan but would have to accept a pay cut on his £198,000 basic weekly salary, while Bayern Munich pulled out of a move for Dzeko for similar reasons.

Mancini wants to sign an A-list centre forward, a versatile wide man and a central midfielder this summer as City attempt to retain their Premier League crown and challenge for the Champions League.

Van Persie has clearly emerged as their top target but enquiries have also been made over Napoli star Edinson Cavani and Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao should City fail to agree a deal for the Arsenal captain.

After missing out to Chelsea for Eden Hazard, club executives are keen to deliver Mancini at least two marquee signings this summer.

They have so far been put off a move for Athletic Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez due to the Basque outfit’s £32m asking price but Mancini wants to bolster his central midfield and is considering a move for Rennes star Yann M’Vila, while he is also a huge fan of Daniele De Rossi of Roma.

But any transfers will be with City’s bank balance in mind. The club’s Premier League triumph, lucrative sponsorship deals and Champions League participation will raise funds but they cannot afford to spend indiscriminately.

14  Forum / Sports / London Olympics 2012 : Olympics contests kick off With Football on: 25-07-2012 05:39 PM
London Olympics 2012 :

The Opening Ceremony for the 2012 Olympics may not be until Friday, but for some athletes, the Games begin Wednesday.

British women take to the soccer field against New Zealand in Cardiff, Wales, the first of six women's soccer games around Britain Wednesday. Women from the United States, France, Japan, Canada, Brazil, Cameroon, South Africa, Sweden, Colombia and North Korea are all in action on what Games organizers are calling "Day -2."

Organizers got good news Wednesday morning, as border staff who had been planning to go on strike Thursday over job cuts called off the plan.

London drivers, meanwhile, got bad news, as traffic restrictions went into effect. They're banned from special "Olympics Lanes" reserved for athletes and officials, and face a £130 ($200) fine for using them.

More than 10,000 athletes from 205 countries are assembling in London for Friday's Opening Ceremony.

Every country will have at least one female athlete after Saudi Arabia included two women in its team for the first time, setting an important precedent for women's rights in the kingdom.

And with medals to be handed out in 26 different sports, there's always the chance of a shock upset or the emergence of a shining new talent to captivate the crowds.

Much of the cost of staging the Olympic and Paralympic Games has been met by British taxpayers, with the government overseeing £9.3 billion ($14.5 billion) of spending from the public purse.

According to its figures, the Games are currently under budget by some £476 million ($738 million).

The government is deploying 18,200 troops -- many more than planned after private security contractor G4S announced it could not provide the 10,400 guards for which it had been contracted.

The Ministry of Defence is guarding the games with two warships, Typhoon jet fighters, Puma helicopters, and, perhaps most controversially, surface-to-air missiles placed on apartment buildings near the stadium, despite objections from residents.

15  Forum / Sports / Arsenal Transfer News : Wenger nearing Giroud deal on: 20-07-2012 02:29 PM
Arsene Wenger is convinced Olivier Giroud can be a big hit at Arsenal next season, with a deal for the French striker "90 per cent" done.

Giroud, who is part of Laurent Blanc's Euro 2012 squad, is thought to command a transfer fee in the region of £13million. The 25-year-old scored 25 goals for his club last season to help Montpellier win the Ligue 1 title, igniting the interest of several top clubs.

However, it appears Arsenal are set to add the promising Frenchman to their squad, and Wenger told French TV station TF1: "Giroud didn't play much (at the Euros so far), but he's going to be an Arsenal player 90 per cent next season."

Wenger added: "I think he has exceptional potential and will integrate very well in our collective and our way of playing. He is a real team player and knows how to combine with other players and I'm sure he will do well with us."

Wenger is working at the European Championship as a media pundit, and has been impressed by the displays of Germany's Lukas Podolski, who has already joined the ranks at the Emirates for next season.

"Podolski did a great job for the German team, he has superb team work," the Arsenal boss said.

"He plays in a cautious way sometimes, but he's still scored a very important goal against Denmark for his 100th cap.

"I am very happy with what I've seen from him."

Once the deal for Giroud is complete, Arsenal could then look to offload some of their fringe players, including Denmark striker Nicklas Bendtner and Morocco international Marouane Chamakh as well as Mexico forward Carlos Vela and Brazilian midfielder Denilson.

Arsenal could also now resurrect interest in Yann M'Vila after Champions League finalists Bayern Munich cooled their interest in the Rennes midfielder.

16  Forum / Sports / Chelsea News : Brazil's Oscar signs for Chelsea on: 20-07-2012 02:24 PM

At the beginning of this month there cannot have been many football fans in England familiar with Oscar dos Santos Emboaba Júnior. Chelsea have provided roughly 25 million reasons for that to have changed but the message from Oscar's Brazil Olympic colleagues is clear. The Premier League and the Chelsea support, in particular, can be very, very excited. When the transfer from Internacional is officially signed off, the London club will welcome a precocious talent.

"Chelsea's fans can expect a very intelligent player," Menezes says. "He is somebody that is able to read the game and solve any problems that arise for his team. He does not rush and dribble with the ball at this feet but he finds good things to do with the ball."

"The thing about Oscar," adds the Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil defender Thiago Silva, "is that he is a very calm guy, always with a smile on his face and never complaining about anything. He is the same on the pitch. He doesn't call much attention to himself, he is discreet but he is always very smart and intelligent."

The public on these shores is poised for its first glimpse of what the fuss is about. Oscar is part of an almost surreally gifted Brazil squad that is here with one thing in mind: to take home Olympic gold. It is a curiosity that Brazil, five times world champions, have never won the Olympic football tournament and it is something they fully intend to put right.

The household names trip off his squad sheet, beginning with Neymar, Brazil's biggest star, who will play in Menezes' front three with Hulk and Leandro Damiao. Hulk is one of the three overage players; the others are Thiago Silva and Marcelo. Premier League fans will recognise Rafael and Tottenham Hotspur's Sandro. Pato, Ganso and Lucas Moura, the Manchester United target, are expected to be no more than substitutes.

"We are under huge pressure," Thiago Silva says, and Oscar, who will be charged with pulling the strings behind the forwards, might feel the burden more than most. In many respects the Brazilian public beyond Porto Alegre, where Inter are from, are only just waking up to Oscar. His profile is not enormous – it is dwarfed by that of Neymar, for example – as he has not made his name in Rio or Sao Paulo and his personality is not of the look-at-me variety. But Brazil will always have great expectations of its No10.

Oscar, though, is adept at taking things in his stride. This is a 20-year-old who has lived almost all of his professional life amid an extraordinary conflict, which saw him sue his first club, São Paulo, and endure two enforced breaks from the game. Oscar is a young man with admirable focus; lesser characters might not have made it to the other side.

Talk to Brazilians about the ownership battle that has coloured Oscar's story and they say that, if it is not entirely normal, then it is not unusual. But to English ears it confirms the perception of there being rather murky practices in south American football.

Oscar joined São Paulo at 13, where he made a name for himself in junior football before, briefly, forcing himself into the club's first team. But the problems started when, according to his agent Giuliano Bertolucci, São Paulo failed to pay the salary that they had promised. And so Oscar took them to court, before he walked out on them in December 2009.

In Brazil a player can become a free agent if he is not paid for three months and Oscar's representatives also argued that his contract was null and void as, in contravention of Fifa's rules, he had signed for more than three years when he was 16.

Oscar did not play until June 2010, when he joined Inter as a free agent but São Paulo continued to claim he belonged to them and they lodged legal appeals, which finally came to a head this year. The Brazil Sports Tribunal put a stop to Oscar playing for a period and he missed vital Copa Libertadores fixtures for Inter before, on 30 May, São Paulo announced that they had reached a settlement on his 'sale'. Oscar was cleared to play again.

There was a triumphal note about São Paulo's statement, which detailed a fee of 15m Reais (£4.75m), which represented a record between Brazilian clubs. But it is Inter who are laughing now, having found a way to pay São Paulo with the help of a third-party investor to turn round a massive profit with the Chelsea transfer. Inter's deal with São Paulo saw them take 50% of Oscar's rights, with the remainder being divvied up between Bertolucci, Oscar and the investor.

Oscar has much to look forward to in Chelsea blue yet it is tempting to speculate that the small things will feel golden, such as being paid on time and in full, and the knowledge that he will never be legally prevented from playing.

"Oscar has shown his strong character to get over various issues," Menezes says. "He is very mature and he has shown this with his determination to choose where he wanted to play. It shows how mature he is."

Oscar starred for Brazil at last year's Under-20 World Cup – he scored a hat-trick in the 3-2 victory over Portugal in the final – and, more recently, he has taken advantage of Ganso's injury problems to establish himself in Menezes' full international side. To date he has six caps.

19  Forum / Sports / Latest Transfer News : Newcastle To Resign Andy Carroll , undaunted by Liverpo on: 16-07-2012 04:19 PM
Latest Transfer News :

Newcastle  To Resign Andy Carroll , undaunted by Liverpool's swift rejection of their bid to sign the 23-year-old England striker on a season-long loan deal with a view to a permanent move, will maintain their interest in a player who finds himself engulfed in uncertainty as he prepares to return for pre-season training.

Liverpool jetted off on their North American tour on Monday - Carroll is due to join them early next week after an extended holiday - and it is understood they are only prepared to consider a permanent transfer for a man who cost them £35million when they managed to prise him away from the Tyneside club in January last year.

However, sources close to the player have indicated that he remains keen to prove himself at Anfield despite new manager Brendan Rodgers' misgivings, although he would entertain the right loan move.

Newcastle would fit the bill - Gateshead-born Carroll made his name at St James' Park after emerging from the ranks to establish himself as a genuine first-teamer under former boss Chris Hughton, and is understood to prefer a return rather than a mooted move to West Ham or AC Milan.

Should the Reds remain firm in their stance, the prospect of the Magpies becoming embroiled in a bidding war for their former player seems unlikely.

Owner Mike Ashley and managing director Derek Llambias have run the club on tight financial lines in recent seasons and have consistently refused to pay over the odds for their targets.

Already this summer, they have moved on from their pursuit of FC Twente's Luuk de Jong after being quoted around £16million for a man they valued at around £10million.

Their initial approach for Carroll, whose £80,000-a-week wage packet dwarfs anything currently on offer at Newcastle, is thought to amount to barely a third of the fee they received from Liverpool in the first place, and just how big a hit the Merseysiders are prepared to take is a matter for debate.

But the alternative, retaining the services of an unhappy player with four years remaining on his contract, could prove equally unpalatable with Rodgers clearly not preparing to build his team around him as predecessor Kenny Dalglish had planned to.

In the meantime, the Magpies will sit back and await developments, confident that they have lit the blue touch-paper and forced Liverpool to show their hand, poised to move again should they be prepared to do business within the confines of their financial framework.

Whatever transpires on that front, Pardew will be keen to strengthen his striking department with uncertainty remaining over Demba Ba's future and Leon Best and Peter Lovenkrands having left the club this summer.

Ba's situation is likely to come to a head one way or another at the end of this month with the release-clause which would allow him to leave the club for just £7million due to expire on July 31.

After that date, any prospective buyer would have to come up with more than double that figure to secure his services.

Pardew, understandably, does not want to lose the Senegal international, who was last season's leading scorer with 16 goals, and Ba himself has repeatedly spoken of his desire to remain on Tyneside.

But the persistent speculation over his situation suggests that forces are at play elsewhere, and the Newcastle manager faces an anxious wait.

Should the former Hoffenheim and West Ham frontman remain with the club, Pardew could once again lose he and compatriot Papiss Cisse to the African Nations Cup, which takes place in South Africa in January.

Ba was not unduly missed during last year's tournament as he and Cisse, who signed for the Magpies before joining up with the national team, returned swiftly with Senegal enduring a disappointing competition.

However, the former scored only once after arriving back at his club, which was a concern for Pardew, whose decision to play him on the left side of a three-man attack to accommodate the newcomer, may also have had an impact on that front.

Sports Direct News :

The former Blackburn Rovers  striker, Yakubu Aiyegbeni  scored on his debut for Chinese side, Guangzhou R&F in Sunday's derby against Guangzhou Evergrande.

Yakubu's effort which arrived after 86 minutes proved to be the winner as his side ran away 1-0 victors in the feisty affair.

Yakubu joined the Chinese club from English side, Blackburn Rovers at the end of the 2011/2012 season and has now signalled his intent to hit the ground running at his new base.

Sportswriters can report that the Yak's late strike condemned Evergrande, the current leaders, to only their third defeat of the season.

The 29-year-old Nigerian's feat ensured R&F ended a four-game losing streak.

Yakubu's side, R&F have now moved up to fifth with the three points after a lean streak in the past month.
