101  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Buhari Is Making Inciting Statements Again; PDP Cries Out on: 3-09-2012 11:55 AM
The Peoples Democratic Party has warned former Head of State, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to stop inciting Nigerians against the government.

According to the PDP, political differences notwithstanding, it expects Buhari to acknowledge the progress the country had made in internalising democratic culture since the return of democracy in 1999.

The party stated this in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, on Sunday, while reacting to comments by Buhari during a visit to Kano.

The Congress for Progressive Change’s presidential candidate for the 2011 general elections had said the ruling PDP had breached the 1999 Constitution on many occasions.

But the PDP said it was shocked by such comments. “We shudder that a former Head of State under whose watch freedom of expression landed many Nigerians in detention on account of his obnoxious decrees, and who now enjoys such freedom, is utterly ungrateful to the efforts of our great party in advancing the cause of democracy.

“If the CPC leadership does not understand what the rule of law is, let’s oblige them with little details. And for General Buhari, the evangelist of Rule of law, Nigerians wish to know if unlawful incitement of the populace to violence and attack on the institutions of democracy is part of the rule of law,” the statement said in part.

The PDP advised Buhari to concentrate on giving Nigerians alternative ideas and plan of action to what the party had at present or even engage it in a public debate on the values of good governance. It reminded Buhari of what Nigerians went through under his regime.
102  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Man commits suicide in Surulere (Photos) on: 3-09-2012 11:11 AM
I got this exclusive photos and story from people who live in the area...Olaitan street in Masha, Surulere. According to eye witnesses, they woke up early Saturday morning and saw a man known in the area as Afeez climbing the PHCN high tension electric pole you see above. (Photo on the left). Afeez had told friends the previous day that he didn't want to live anymore. A large crowd gathered and repeatedly begged him to come down, which he eventually did.

After he got down, (Photo on the right - Afeez is the one in Lemon shirt), people started slapping him around and abusing him for wanting to commit suicide, instead of getting him help. His friends eventually carried him away and the crowd dispersed.

That same night, Afeez succeeded in killing himself. Continue reading...
The following morning, which was yesterday Sunday Sept 1, neighbours woke up to the sad news. Afeez had succeeded in killing himself. He drank poison in the night and died.

Afeez' body being removed from his home...wrapped in white cloth. Truly truly sad. If only suicidal people get the help they need before killing themselves.
103  Forum / The Buzz Central / BIMBO AKINTOLA I CAN BE 70 AND SINGLE IF I DON’T MEET THE MAN I LOVE on: 3-09-2012 11:04 AM
Can you tell us how old you are?

Why won’t I? Oh, my mum said I should be telling people my new age, that I am 26 years this year. I just turned 26 this year that’s my new age. You know all actresses have new age when they get there. So that is my new age, anybody that doubt it should go prove it. When I did Out of Bound I was only seven, so how old am I now?

How then do you feel when you attend weddings?

I never attend weddings but I attended the wedding of my sister. I am not a wedding or party or burial kind of person. But I am a birthday person. I really do not understand what I shall be doing at such places. We are all here as  individuals. We are individuals who have different parts to play in life. Some of us would marry; some of us would not marry. Some of us would have kids while some of us would not. So I never judge myself according to other people`s standard. And for me, marriage is such a huge deal that I am not in a hurry to do that; that is the truth. That is the whole truth. And if you find out from my ex- boyfriends you shall know that I have had  proposals to wish I just said, no to. This is because at the end of the day, you are telling this person about this, that I do not believe it is going to work again. Look I will be 70 and still be single if I do not believe honestly that it is the time for marriage or that I have seen the person.

Following earlier speculation between Fenerbahce, Arsenal and other non popular choices concerning which team would be signing Michael Essien, his fate has finally been sealed with a move to Real Madrid.

Chelsea Football Club decided to calm the increasingly heated arguments about his move yesterday and announced that Michael Essien is joining Real Madrid on a season-long loan.

Michael Essien until his recent injuries has been a big fan favourite and a central member of the Chelsea Football club, attracting many African and other supporters to the team. In six seasons in west London, he impressed by winning two Premier League titles, four FA Cups and one Champions League winners’ medal.

106  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Husband Absconds After Wife Delivers Quadruplets; They Already Have 5 Daughters on: 1-09-2012 12:11 PM
"Children are the heritage of God and blessed is the man that his quiver is full of them,” says the Holy book, but not in the situation of 35-year-old Iyabo Oladunni, a mother of five girls who was blessed with a set of quadruplets at 5:14pm on Friday 24, 2012 at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan .

Iyabo, who live in Ijaye Orile near Ibadan, Oyo State, with her husband, Olayemi Oladunni, is a tailor by profession, while her husband is a welder.

The mother of five girls before the birth of the quadruplets said that her aim and hope of having another baby after the five girls was to have a boy. But to her amazement, God gave her more than she requested and expected.

Moreover, Iyabo Oladunni said that the eldest of the first five girls, who is now 12 years old, lives with her father’s younger brother at Lagos. The second girl, 8-year-old, is presently in Nursery 3 in a school in Ijaye; the third born, a set of twins, are in Nursery 1 and the fifth girl, aged three years has not started schooling.

When asked how she feels about the birth of the babies, Iyabo said “I have mixed feelings about their deliveries. I’m partly happy and partly sad. I’m happy because I have a male which is my desire among the four children, and sad because I don’t have the wherewithal to take care of them in a rented room where we live.”

According to Iyabo, although the couple were both desirous to have a male child, it was amazing that her husband and the father of the quadruplets, Olayemi, took to his heels immediately he had an inkling a day to his wife’s delivery.

Recounting her husband's reaction when he heard she was carrying four babies in her womb, Iyabo said “after a scan was carried out in the month of March this year, and it showed there were four babies in my womb, I was afraid and started crying.

'"But the doctor who did the ultrasound test encouraged me to pray to God for assistance instead of weeping. The man also told me that God, who put them there, will definitely take care of them. When I got home after the scan, I told my husband about it and he kept asking me 'where do I take the four babies to?'"

She, however, pleaded with her husband wherever he is that he should return home so that they can jointly take care of the babies, even as she called on the Oyo State governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, to come to the aid of the babies in whatever ways he deems fit. She also appealed to Nigerians generally to come to her rescue.

According to the pastor of the Oladunnis, Evangelist Olawumi Abiola of Emmanuel Anglican Church, Ijaye Orile, Akinyele Local Government, Ibadan, “Mrs. Iyabo Oladunni started complaining of stomach pain for a very long time and had used some medications. When she told me that the pain persisted, I persuaded her to undergo a medical test in order to get to the root of the stomach pain.

After the test, she discovered that it was pregnancy and I told her that she should go and register in a hospital outside Ijaye. She obeyed and came to register at Adeoyo State Hospital. I can’t afford to lose her as I lost another member of the church about two years ago.”

Evangelist Abiola also spoke about the committment of the Oladunnis, especially the wife owing to the fact that women are generally committed to the work of God. He also expressed his gratitude to God for keeping the four babies and their mothers alive. "I implore Nigerians to come to our aid, most especially considering the future of these children. The responsibility cannot be carried by an individual more so that the parents live in a village; there is no money in the village.”

Also speaking, the mother-in-law, Madam Moyiola Oladunni, said, “I’m very happy for this miraculous work of God. When God gives me this blessing, I can’t question him, but my major concern is how to take care of these blessings because it’s not a one-man responsibility.”

"Charly Boy is not my Son. I think Charlyboy is a character. I don’t have any child as Charlyboy, I have Charles Oputa. I don’t allow Charlyboy into my house, but I have a caring son called Charles," he said.

Justice Oputa who also spoke kindly of his son said he respects his son's will so much and can not but support him even right from the day he decided to be a revolutionist.

Hear him, "he has his own will, he has been doing what he likes, he has been happy with what he is doing and that is the aim of life. If you are satisfied, contented with the day to day existence, then you are considered a happy man. You may be very rich and happy but not satisfied, but if you are in an atmosphere you like and you have a wife who agrees with you like Charles, then you are lucky. My son is very understanding, loving and shows so much concern and respect for me and her mother. That’s all we need from him at this age.

He has lofty visions seemingly impossible to actualize. He pursues those visions with a single-minded doggedness, exhibiting an amazing capacity to build a team and drive them relentlessly toward the realization of his dreams. His advice to the youths to never let anybody kill their dreams is his personal mantra which rules him. I salute that."

109  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / As Jonathan declares Anambra oil state...Kogi stakes claim to same oil wells on: 31-08-2012 01:19 PM
As President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday inaugurated the first oil refinery in Anambra State, the Kogi State government stepped forward same day to stake a claim to the oil wells that will serve the refinery.
President Jonathan opened the refinery being built by Orient Petroleum at Aguleri Otu in Anambra East local government area and declared Anambra an oil producing state.

But moments later across the border in Kogi State, Governor Idris Wada said in a statement: “Kogi will be a major stake holder in the refinery, considering the fact the oil wells that will service the refinery are in Odeke Community in Ibaji Local Government Area of the state.”

Wada made the claim in a statement issued from the office of his deputy Yomi Awoniyi, a day after a community group issued a public notice saying that the oil deposits claimed by Anambra State are within the Odeke community of Kogi State.

Governor Wada said in the statement yesterday that the state “is doing everything humanly possible to resolve the issues surrounding the location of the oil wells with the contending states.”

The statement ended on a note of optimism: “Kogi State will soon join the league of oil producing states in the country.”

But speaking yesterday at the ceremony to kick-start his company’s oil refinery in Anambra State, Orient Petroleum chairman Chief Emeka Anyaoku said the controversy over ownership of the oil deposits has been resolved and that the ‘bulk’ of the deposits are within Anambra territory.

He however added that any state where oil was found and drilled by Orient Petroleum would be accorded due recognition.

“There was misconception that the oil well was not entirely in Anambra, that has been resolved through the map of Nigeria. Let me quickly state that the two oil blocks encompassed parts of Enugu, Kogi, Delta and Edo states but bulk of it is in Anambra,” Anyaoku said.

He said in addition to the private shareholders, other bodies that have shares in the company include Anambra, Rivers, Kogi and the 21 local government areas of the state.

Speaking at the commissioning of the refinery, President Jonathan said the Federal Government was committed to oil exploration in all the sedimentary basins and commended the oil company for pioneering the inland crude oil production in the country.

“The good news is not Orient Oil and Anambra basin alone, the good news is for all our sedimentary basins all over the country,” Jonathan said. He said it would give confidence to other investors to invest in other inland sedimentary basins.

Jonathan urged operators in the oil industry, especially those at the upstream sector, not to think only about exporting crude oil but should also add value to it and export refined products.

“We have a lot of gas resources in Anambra Basin from meteorological records,” he said.

“Orient Petroleum has helped us not just in producing the crude oil but adding value to the crude oil. As a nation, we should not continue to think that we will be exporting crude oil materials abroad.

“The vision of Orient to diversify into refining and power generation, among others is the way to go. People who refine crude oil make more money than us who export the crude commodity,” he added.

Anyaoku said crude refining by the company would commence by next year, and that when the refining facility was completed about 20,000 litres of crude would be refined daily.

In his remarks, Governor Peter Obi, assured that he would continue to partner with the company to develop the oil sector of the state.

‘The oil belongs to Kogi’

Meanwhile, a group called Ibaji Development Association (IDA) warned that the oil wells OPL 915 and 916 are located in Kogi and not Anambra State as claimed by Orient Petroleum which is carrying out exploration in the area.

In a message to President Jonathan ahead of his visit to the area yesterday, IDA said “the area where the current productive oil well is located is in Odeke community in Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi state and not in Anambra State.”

“Oil exploration activities leading to the successful access to crude oil were carried out in Kogi state within Odeke, Echeno, Ehile, Anocha and Omabo communities by Orient Petroleum Plc. Workers of this company actually rented houses in these communities as quarters for their staff for the final phase 1 of oil well production testing of these wells. Phase 2 is due at the end of September 2012 in Uchuchu, Ikah, Iregwu and Ujeh also within Ibaji local government area of Kogi state,” the group said.

IDA said Ibaji area was in conflict with the people of Agulere and Otuocha in Anambra State over ownership of the oil wells since 1994 which led to loss of lives and property.

The association called on President Jonathan to officially declare Kogi as an oil producing state saying “our non-resistant stance should not be misconstrued to mean cowardice, even in the face of glaring provocation from Anambra state, whose communities are already head over heels over the benefits of the oil wells that do not belong to them.”

The Senate will stop the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) from yielding to the dictate of some foreign institutions regarding the proposed introduction of the N5,000 note, Chairman Senate Committee on Rules and Business, Senator Ita Enang (PDP, Akwa Ibom North-East) has said.
Enang, who said this in Abuja on Wednesday while addressing the 1985 class of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), said the proposed currency restructuring would hinder the nation’s economy.

“Can this (introduction of N5,000) be done in Nigeria without carrying people along? Should we allow our country’s economy to be dictated by institutions outside Nigeria who may have posted their agents into Nigeria? I, as senator representing Akwa-Ibom North-East, am opposed to the proposed introduction of N5,000 note by the CBN,” Enang said.

The senator also hinted that the Senate would do everything possible to make the apex bank submit its budget to the National Assembly for scrutiny as required by the Fiscal Responsibility Act.

He called on the NBA to submit its memoranda to the Constitution Review Committees of both chambers of the National Assembly for the ongoing process of the amendment of the 1999 Constitution.
111  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Nigeria could earn N8bn annually from palm oil-Minister on: 31-08-2012 01:15 PM
Nigeria could be making at least N8 billion annually if it had maintained its market share of palm oil production from what it had in the 1960s, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Akinwumi Adesina has said.
The minister said this yesterday during the signing ceremony of an agreement between government and eighteen palm oil plantation farmers, marking the formal take off of the 2012 estate component of activities of the palm oil value chain.

Adesina said “instead of fighting over crude oil, today it is about going back to reclaim our dominant role in the market as well as palm oil is concerned. The initiative is in line with governments efforts to enable private sector lead agricultural transformation”.

The participating palm oil plantation estates which span across eleven states includes: Kogi, Edo, Ondo, Delta, Cross River, Ogun, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Abia, Osun and Enugu. The farmers are to get not less than 500 hectares of land concessions to plant in 2013.

Akinwumi explained that government’s Agricultural Transformation Agenda, plans to support the production of 240,000 hectares in the next three years by small holder farmers and estates, and has set a target of raising 9 million improved “tenera  sprouted nuts into mature seedling for the establishing of 60,000 hectares in 2013”.

He said “Nigeria accounted for 27 percent of the global market of palm oil in 1961.Our production declined from 167,000 metric tonnes in 1961 to 25,000 metric tonnes by 2008. In the same period global palm oil expanded from 629,000 metric tonnes in 1961 to 33.3 million metric tonnes.”

The minister lamented that Malaysia which is the second largest palm oil producing country, second to Indonesia, collected its first improved nuts from Nigeria and now earns 18 billion dollars annually from palm oil production.

115  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Over 1500 Nigerian students face deportation in UK on: 31-08-2012 12:55 PM
Thousands of non-EU students at London Metropolitan University have 60 days to find a course at another institution or get out of the UK, after the Home Office stripped the institution of its right to sign off visas for foreign students.

The large London university, which had 3,100 full-time foreign students in 2010-11, had its “highly trusted sponsor” status revoked for failing to monitor visa recipients closely enough. The UK Border Agency said it found problems with 61 per cent of randomly selected files during a recent audit.

Concerns were also raised that the Government’s determination to crack down on immigration could impact on the finances of other universities reliant on the higher fees paid by foreign students to balance their books.

The vice-chancellor of London Met, Malcolm Gillies, warned that the future of the university, which has 30,000 students, is at stake, because the punishment for its immigration failures could blow a £30m hole in its budget.

Foreign students bring an estimated £12.5bn in to the UK economy every year. “No matter how this is dressed up, the damaging message that the UK deports foreign students at UK universities will reach all corners of the globe,” said Sally Hunt, general secretary of the University and College Union. “The last thing we can afford to do is send the message that international students are no longer welcome.”

UK Border Agency staff claimed one in four of London Met’s overseas students (26 out of a sample of 101) did not have valid visas, 142 out of 250 had “attendance problems” and 20 out of 50 interviewed had limited English.
116  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Boko Haram leaks 50 SSS employees(including the agency’s DG) information online on: 31-08-2012 12:51 PM
The Associated Press has reported the leak of personal data of more than 50 past and current employees of Nigeria’s State Security Service. The information remained easily accessible on the Internet for days and had details about the agency’s director-general, including his mobile phone number, bank account particulars and contact information for his son. Home addresses and names of immediate family members, were leaked onto the Internet in a threatening message that claimed to come from a radical Islamist sect that’s killed hundreds of people this year alone.

Many of the agents listed who could be reached by the AP said they received no official warning from the SSS that their information had been posted online nor been otherwise alerted. The material has been deleted from the comment section of a website, but the security breach calls into question whether Nigeria’s intelligence community, whose agents already have released suspected terrorists out of religious and ethnic sympathies, are too compromised from within to stop the violence now plaguing Africa’s most populous nation.

“A senior Nigerian intelligence official said authorities were aware that the leak had happened and that many were embarrassed by it. He spoke on condition of anonymity as information about the leak was not to have been made public.

“Marilyn Ogar, a spokeswoman for the State Security Service, declined to answer questions Thursday about the posting of the information.

According to the news agency, “The information leak came in two postings earlier this month on a website that provides rewritten news on Nigeria. The first posting threatened to kill agents of the State Security Service on behalf of Boko Haram, a radical Islamist sect responsible for more than 660 killings this year alone in Nigeria. The second posting simply offered a block of text containing biographical and other details about the agents.
Though the comments have been removed, the AP is not identifying the website involved as cached versions of the comments remain online and intelligence service agents have been killed by Boko Haram members in the past.
Those reached by the AP who were willing to talk expressed disbelief that sensitive information like that could make its way to the Internet.
“I was shocked to see my details posted on the Internet,” said one former agent, who declined to be named out of safety concerns. “I’ve not heard anything from anybody. I was surprised that such information could be leaked.”
“Another man on the list said he simply once served as a doctor to help the agency on an on-call basis only. The list appeared to include lower-ranking agents, as well as one-time state directors for the agency.
“Some of those contacted suggested that the list appeared to come from the agency’s pension department, as it mostly included retirees and listed bank account information for nearly all those named. It was not immediately clear if the information had been hacked from the outside and obtained or taken out by an agency employee or someone with access to the material.

118  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Kogi: Court Seals Echocho’s Hope, To Pay N100,000 on: 30-08-2012 09:57 AM
Hope of Jibrin Isah, aka Echocho of becoming Kogi State governor was finally sealed yesterday by a Abuja Federal High Court in Abuja.

Justice Abdul Kafarati did not dismiss the suit filed by Isah seeking to unseat the Kogi State Governor Idris Wada but also awarded cost against him.

He awarded N100,000 cost against him for bringing such a frivolous case to court. He held that the case lacked substance.

The judge said that the case was an abuse of court process because it was filed after election into the governorship office of Kogi State.

Justice Kafarati upheld the argument of Wada’s lawyer, Chief Chris Uche that the case was an abuse of the court process.

He said that if the plaintiff was aggrieved the proper forum to go to was an election tribunal.

Describing the case as judicial time, the judge said that the case ought not have been brought to the Federal Hihg Court.

The judge also held that since Isah did not participate in the election, he lacked the locus to challenge the election.

According to the judge, the case was filed at a wrong court by a wrong person and deserved to be dismissed. He accordingly dismissed the suit.

Justice Kafarati had on May 9th, 2012 reserved judgment in the case.

The plaintiff, Isah had asked the court to declare him as the person nominated to contest for the office of the Kogi State governor under the Peoples Democratic Party.

Before the case was adjourned for judgment, lawyers representing Isah, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Wada made efforts to persuade the judge to rule in their favour.

While INEC and Wada argued that the Supreme Court judgment in the case of former Bayelsa State Governor, Timipriye Sylva against INEC supported their case, but Isah’s lawyer, Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN disagreed.

The Supreme Court had on April 20, 2012 dismissed the appeal filed by Sylva who sought to be declared the authentic candidate of the PDP for the Bayelsa state governorship elections on the ground that he won the January 2011 primary.

But the Supreme Court among other things held that the January primary won by Sylva in preparation for election of April 201w had faded into irrelevance following the cancellation of that election.

The apex court further held that since that since Sylva did not participate in the later primary which was won by Seriake Dickson, he could not challenge the legitimacy of the later primary.
