EURO 2012 FINAL REVIEW

ITALY Vs SPAIN

As expected the European champions Spain defeated Italy in the Euro final; The Defending champions (Spain) crushed their opponent in an unexpected but most lopsided victory in the tournament history.

Spain strolled to a 2nd Euro trophy with an amazing 4 – 0 victory over Italy in the final on Sunday, therefore retaining it’s little, the Spanish team is now considered the best team in the world.

The one sided final was a directed response to critics who called Spanish style of play boring at Euro 2012, and were even booed in the game against Portugal because of their too many passes.

Playing a Spanish side with eleven players is enough tasks, but the Italians endured this huge task with 10 men after 64th minute of play. This is as a result having exhausted all substitutes and substitute Thiago Motta, who had only been on the field for seven minutes was taken off due to injury.

This victory has made the Spanish football National winners of record three straight major titles, Euro 2008, World Cup 2010.

“Tonight, there was no context, they were too superior – so the bitterness at losing this final is only relative” that was Italy’s Skipper fondly called G.G Buffon Iker Casillas on the other hand made it his 10th consecutive clean sheet in tournament knockout matches.

“You could tell right away that they were fresher physically, we didn’t have time to recuperate, especially against players like these. It became very difficult to come back from 2 goals down” said Italy coach Cesare Prandelli.

6  Forum / Sports / Football Ruling Body (FIFA) Approves Goal Line Technology on: 7-07-2012 01:34 PM
Approves Goal Line Technology

Fifa president Joseph Sepp Blatter has revealed that Frank Lampard’s “ghost” goal at the 2010 World Cup played a decisive role in the introduction of goal-line technology.

This prompted the Football Ruling Body (FIFA) to  finally embraced goal-line technology as FIFA's lawmaking panel approved  for use in matches on Thursday.

FIFA will introduce goal-line technology at the seven-team Club World Cup in Japan in December, and plans to use it in Brazil at the 2013 Confederations Cup and 2014 World Cup.

FIFA President said the approved Hawk-Eye and GoalRef systems would provide "99 percent security" that a notorious refereeing error which helped eliminate England at the last World Cup would not be repeated.

"There is no 100 percent guarantee in life. In the past we didn't have accurate systems, but I have to say, `Thank you, Lampard,'" Blatter said, referring to England midfielder Frank Lampard whose clear goal against Germany did not count in South Africa two years ago.
Approves Goal Line Technology

FIFA will use both goal-line systems in Japan, after they won unanimous support from the International Football Association Board (IFAB) panel, chaired by Blatter.

The English Premier League is expected to adopt one of the systems - which are expected to cost up to $250,000 per stadium to install - during next season. Major League Soccer in the United States has also expressed interest.

The IFAB panel, comprising officials from FIFA and the four British football associations, also approved a five-officials system of refereeing which UEFA President Michel Platini promoted as an alternative to technology.

In a third historic ruling, the panel reversed a ban on women players, notably in the Middle East, wearing headscarves in FIFA competitions which had been enforced for safety reasons in 2007.

The three decisions "will be long lasting and resonate throughout the world," said Patrick Nelson, chief executive of the Northern Ireland association.

Thursday's decision was expected and completed Blatter's U-turn, after FIFA had previously blocked using technology to help referees make decisions.

It followed two weeks after another major tournament was blighted by a goal-line error, as European Championship co-host Ukraine was denied a goal against England in a decisive group match.

"It became evident the moment what happened in South Africa in 2010, that this cannot be repeated, and it happened again in the Ukraine. Ukraine can still not believe it," Blatter said.
Approves Goal Line Technology

The IFAB panel accepted test results conducted by a Zurich-based technology institute that proved Hawk-Eye and GoalRef could accurately judge when balls crossed the goal line, and send an immediate signal to the match referee.

Hawk-Eye is a British camera-based system already used in tennis and cricket.

"We can mobilize very quickly now," managing director Steve Carter said. "The average football fan can go to sleep knowing the very best technology is going to be used."

GoalRef is a Danish-German project using magnetic sensors in the goalposts to track a special ball.

"It has taken many years to get to this level," said Peter Knap, whose Danish company Select makes the "intelligent" GoalRef ball.

Ingmar Bretz, project manager for the Frauenhofer institute in Nuremberg, Germany, said he had been "very anxious" to know the test results. "We didn't know until today," he said.

Both projects must now digest a FIFA technical manual to ensure each system is certified at every stadium planning to use it.

IFAB members confirmed that decisions would not be broadcast inside stadiums, and video replay remains off limits for judgment calls, such as penalties or offside.

"Goal-line technology is where this starts and finishes," English FA general secretary Alex Horne said. "None of us thinks that technology interfering with the free-flowing nature of football would be good for the game."

7  Forum / Sports / Euro 2012 Final Preview: (Italy Vs Spain) on: 30-06-2012 05:08 PM

The Euro 2012 final will be a rematch.

After knocking off Germany by a score of 2-1, Italy have advanced to the finals to take on Spain. The Spaniards, on the other hand, beat Portugal via penalty kicks on Wednesday night to advance.

The finals will be a rematch of the Group C opening match, when Italy and Spain drew by a score of 1-1. Spain eventually won the group, but Italy advanced over Croatia, and now both squads have gotten through their side of the bracket after beating their Group B counterparts.

Euro 2012 Final Preview: (Italy Vs Spain)

No one is going to deny how beautiful it is to watch Spain's midfield kick the ball around and keep possession. No matter what team you support, it's hard to deny how near perfect they are in that aspect.

But in Euro 2012, and without David Villa, the Spaniards have struggled to put the ball in the back of the net.

The Alvaro Negredo experiment failed against Portugal, Fernando Torres has been up and down and Fernando Llorente doesn't appear to be an option.

No matter how well Spain controls the ball, someone needs to finish, especially against Gianluigi Buffon and Italy's terrific defense

There's no question Pirlo has been the engine that makes Italy's attack go. He's been the Man of the Match three times, his passing has been exquisite and he's proven to be a major danger on free kicks.

While Spain's entire midfield is the definition of beautiful, Pirlo has taken care of that all by himself. He will be a huge factor once again in the finals.

Let's take a closer look at the much-anticipated rematch, which will decide the best football team in all of Europe.

9  Forum / Sports / Manchester United News: I won't Wear Seven Shirt-Kagawa on: 25-06-2012 01:51 PM
Manchester United News

Manchester United: Shinji Kagawa has turned down the chance to join a list of Manchester United legends by wearing the famous number seven shirt, with the Japanese international insisting he wants to make a name for himself rather than live off former glories.

Kagawa completed his switch, believed to be initially worth around £17.7 million, to Old Trafford over the weekend having completed a medical and obtained a UK work permit.

Michael Owen previously donned the number seven shirt, worn by the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, George Best and David Beckham, however it is now vacant following the Liverpool man’s release earlier this summer.

Kagawa wore the number 23 shirt while with Borussia Dortmund and he wears the number 10 for his country.

“I've just joined the team and haven't accomplished anything yet,” said Kagawa of his decision. “I want to make a name for myself [at United] on my own terms.”

The Japanese international revealed that he turned down the number seven shirt for one with ‘personal meaning’. His new squad number has yet to be confirmed.

Kagawa went on to reveal that he has already been inspired by his first trip to Old Trafford to sign his four year contract.

'When I was at [Old Trafford], I thought about how incredible it would be if I could score there,' he said.

Kobe Bryant
The No. 24 of Kobe Bryant is the top-selling jersey internationally for the 2011-12 season.

The 16-time All-Star was first in overall international sales and led the way in three regional subcategories including China, Europe and Latin America. This marks the sixth straight year Bryant has led jersey sales in China.

The top-selling jersey in the United States for this season belonged to the Chicago Bulls' Derrick Rose.

The NBA bases its list on sales data from adidas locations outside the United States. Adidas is the official apparel provider of the NBA.

Rounding out the top five sellers internationally were Rose, the Miami Heat's LeBron James, the Boston Celtics' Kevin Garnett and the Orlando Magic's Dwight Howard. Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers finished ninth.

Bryant's teammate Pau Gasol, a native of Spain, had the top-selling jersey among non-American players at 11th. His countryman, point guard Ricky Rubio of the Minnesota Timberwolves, finished 15th.

•Nigeria Sports Minister, Abdullahi

Abdullahi is happy with the level of preparations by the various sports federations, and believes Team Nigeria will win medals at the London Games.

“I am very confident that we are going to do well at the Olympics. You remember when I was still the supervising minister, people asked me how was the preparation, I was not so sure but with what I have seen so far, I am confident that we are going to do well.’’ The sports minister said.

Abdullahi said he was not pledging medals haul at the games, but that there was hope of winning medals in some games.

’’ I am not in a position to promise medals. The various federations have promised me medals. But I am not going to start saying, this is it. In boxing, I am very sure we are going to do well. I am confident we are going to do well in wrestling. I am confident we are going to do well in female boxing especially. I am also sure that we are going to do well in weightlifting.

“Our athletes are going to Port Novo next week for the All Africa Open. So, I am confident that the preparation that we have made so far is enough to take us somewhere,’ he said optimistically.

’’I believe that we are going to do very well. I am not saying that we are going to be where we should be. That requires greater work than we have done. But I am confident that Nigeria will do well in this Olympic Games,’’ the minister  said in an interview monitored on voiceofnigeria.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Basketball Federation, NBBF,  has outlined the itinerary for the men’s basketball team,  D’Tigers, ahead of the London 2012 Olympic Games qualifying tournament in Venezuela.

D’Tigers, who have been on a training tour of China, will head to Houston, the United States, to play against Great Britain’s national team today.

Thereafter, the team will travel to Brazil for a 4-Nation Tournament, scheduled to hold between 25 and 30 June, where they will face Greece, New Zealand and the hosts, Brazil.

They will then head for Venezuela for the London 2012 Olympic Games Basketball event qualifiers, billed from 2-8 July in Caracas.

D’Tigers, made up of 8 foreign-based players and 3 home-based stars, earlier featured in some build up games against Foshan Long Lions Basketball club of China on 9-13 June, which they won by 84-54, 74-47 and 110- 67 points respectively.

They also defeated Fujian Quanzhou Bank Basketball club by 84-56 on 14 June before beating Shanxi Zhongyu Basketball team 94-80 on 16 June, in what seemed like the toughest build up game in China.

Chelsea Transfer News

Didier  Drogba: Drogba has agreed 'in principle' to join Shanghai Shenhua this summer, according to reports in China.

The 34-year-old will leave Chelsea as a free agent at the end of this month after deciding against extending his stay with the Blues by another season.

According to the official Oriental Morning Post, Drogba will now move to China with an agreement between his representatives and Shenhua having been reached over a two-and-a-half year deal.

The Ivorian striker will become the highest paid player in China when he puts pen to paper, with Drogba's salary expected to be in the region of £200,000-per-week.

Drogba leaves Chelsea after eight years, and as one of the Stamford Bridge club's all-time great players, particularly following his contribution in the final of the Champions League last month.

An announcement regarding Drogba's future is expected to be made in the next week or so, and the former Marseille forward says he is set for an 'interesting' adventure.

"The next step is going to be an interesting one and I think soon I'm going to announce it," Drogba said on a promotional trip to India.

"For now, I'll just ask you to wait a few moments."

Premier League 2012-13 fixture list: Manchester City to face Southampton on opening day as United visit Everton & Arsenal host Sunderland

Premier League reigning champions Manchester City will play newly promoted Southampton in the opening round of fixtures for the new season.
OPENING DAY FIXTURES
Arsenal vs Sunderland   Everton vs Man United
Fulham vs Norwich   Man City vs Southampton
Newcastle vs Tottenham   QPR vs Swansea
Reading vs Stoke   West Brom vs Liverpool
West Ham vs Aston Villa   Wigan vs Chelsea

Roberto Mancini's side play the south-coast outfit in a home tie at the Etihad Stadium, while last season's runners-up Manchester United travel to David Moyes' Everton and third-placed Arsenal host Sunderland.

Champions League winners Chelsea face an away trip to Wigan in their first game, with two of England manager Roy Hodgson's former clubs, West Brom and Liverpool, clashing at the Hawthorns in Brendan Rodgers' opening game as Reds boss.

Elsewhere, manager-less Tottenham start with a tough trip to the Sports Direct Arena where they play last season's surprise package Newcastle, and Michael Laudrup opens his account with Welsh side Swansea in London against QPR - who narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship on the final day of the last campaign.

Following their promotion from the Championship, Reading begin life back in the Premier League with a game against Stoke while another newly-promoted side, West Ham, take on Paul Lambert's Aston Villa at Upton Park.

Fulham, who finished ninth in England's top flight last term, have a home fixture with Norwich - who recently appointed Chris Hughton as their new manager.
