Senate committee chair Uzodinma in certificate forgery, debt scandal
Our Reporter 22/07/2012 00:02:00

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation, Senator Hope Uzodinma, has been accused of lying about his Degree in Arts/Criminology from Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri, United States, according to a news portal, Pointblanknews.com findings. The Senator had, in an interview with a national newspaper (Not Sunday Mirror), and on his Facebook page and other documents, indicated that he obtained a Degree in Arts/ Criminology from the Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri.

However, Pointblanknews. com’s investigations at the Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri, showed that the Senator representing Orlu Senatorial District never obtained a degree from the University.

“Sorry, we don’t have such name in our database; you can please call or reach out to the Registrar’s office, a lady who refused to be named in the Office of Alumni Affairs of the School, had told the news portal.

A check at the Registrar’s office where data of all students including those that have graduated are kept did not find the name “Hope Uzodinma,” or any similar name.

“Please, we don’t have such name in our record. But you can also check at the National Clearing House,” an official who simply gave his name as Kelvin at the Registrar’s office of the Washington University, told Pointblanknews.com.

The News organisationalso checked through official records at the National Clearing House and was told the name, Hope Uzodinma, does not exist in any of its database.

“We cannot get any record with such name, I am sorry,” Kerry Anderson of the National Clearing House, allegedly told Pointblanknews. com.

It was gathered that Pointblanknews.com investigation came about as a result of the alarm raised by a group, Save Imo, that Uzodinma did not have the two degree certificates from a Nigerian University and another from oversea as he had claimed.

The news service reported that a statement endorsed by the coordinator of the group, Nze Ebubeagu Ekenulo, said findings by the organization revealed that the lawmaker’s claims were unfounded.

“Both universities have confirmed that the senator never attended their institutions, hence obtained no degrees from them,” Ekenulo maintained.

The group promised to make public the result of another investigation carried out at a secondary school in Imo State and a report from Government College, Etche in Rivers State.

It will be recalled that Uzodinma, who heads the Senate Committee on Aviation, had in the newspaper interview claimed he obtained a degree from Washington University and a Higher National Diploma from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo State.

Senator Uzodinma has been dogged by allegations bordering on fraudulent activities. In 2005, Spring Bank Plc, lodged a complaint with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission against the Senator for fraudulent diversion and obtaining money under false pretenses.

After a thorough investigation, the Commission found a prima facie case against him and filed a nine-count charge against him at the High Court of Lagos State, Ikeja Division in Charge No. ID/82C/2008: F.R.N V. HOPE UZODINMA.

The Igbos are mostly found in south-eastern Nigeria. A great people with great culture and custom the republican lifestyle of the Igbos leaves them  as a strong people who value personal liberty and choices. Sometimes described by critics as generally difficult to rule or control based on this principle of rooted republicanism, the Igbos are fiercely independent .

Igbos go to great length to maintain family ties in the unique spirit of brotherhood — uncompromisingly attached to family values held sacrosanct for ages! This commentator is a member of this great community east of the Niger and he is indeed proud! Whilst that fact is established, it does not in any stretch of imagination prevent one from speaking the truth even if that truth is against the interest of my people.

Last March, I was navigating the internet one early morning, and I stumbled upon a news item. It was about the booming 'business' in Igboland of baby selling and buying! Security agents reportedly 'invaded' a so-called orphanage home in Anambra State where they made some arrests and freed some female 'hostages' -- some heavy with pregnancy!

Recently also, similar news item came up. The news was still about a raid carried out by soldiers in an orphanage in Aba, Abia State. The soldiers reportedly arrested six girls (some pregnant!) for alleged child trafficking while six babies were recovered from 'captivity'! According to the report, the owner of the home escaped arrest and was still at large!

The truth in this situation must be told, no matter whose ox is gored. The problem of child trafficking is not limited to Igboland. However, the difference here happens to be the propensity with which some Igbo men and women are desperate to 'buy' babies or use same for money rituals! While some couples are in need of babies to solidify their marital relationships, others desire new-born babies for the purposes of making satanic money!

In Igboland when you are married and bearing a child poses a problem, then one is in trouble! All sort of stories would be doing the rounds about the man’s impotency or the wife's past wayward lifestyle. The pressure from the village and elsewhere would force you to seek out a solution: visiting spiritual homes and pastors or going all the way to buying a baby, which would then be presented to everybody as yours! In this case of baby buying and selling a syndicate is involved; a network of baby-supplying chain linking the entire south-eastern states.

While the high cost of marriage in Igboland discourages eligible men from marrying and settling down, the unwritten rule that forbids a girl from having any child before marriage forces girls to either go for abortion in the event of an unwanted pregnancy or contemplate even selling off the baby once it is delivered is another problem. The situation is that serious and something must be done by elders in the villages to reduce the prohibitive cost of marrying our girls in the village or towns in Igboland.

The quest for easy riches does a lot of damage to the values hitherto held sacrosanct in Igboland! Or how else does one explain a situation where no one asks any question about how anybody suddenly becomes rich.

The truth is that in Igboland, some people see survival economically as the only thing 'holy' enough to sacrifice whatever it takes for, even if it involves selling a human head!

One must state here clearly that he respects deeply the sanctity of human life and whoever takes what (s)he cannot give ought to be destined for the Hades!

In this wise, therefore, whoever is impotent should declare his impotency and seek divine or medical assistance. (We have seen cases of men whose manhood was 'dry' receiving miraculous healing). And whoever is barren should make open her case of barrenness. Solution could be found through medical or divine intervention.

According to the French philosopher, Roger Fournier, "The miracle of love is not to love a man or a woman; it is to love yourself well enough to be capable of really loving someone else". When we love ourselves and our neighbours, respecting the sanctity of human life we may not consider 'stealing' or 'buying' babies to satisfy our clearly dysfunctional marital responsibility.

The booming baby 'business' in Igboland in particular and Nigeria in general must stop. For it is a big shame, an indecent and diabolical act that is calling the attention of Heaven! Let righteousness prevail, please!

Gunmen suspected to be hired assassins yesterday attacked the second-in-command to Ezeigbo Gburugburu, Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka in his home, Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State. Daily Sun gathered that the gunmen trailed Ezeonwuka from his Rojenny Tourist village, Oba to his residence at about 9.30p.m. and started shooting sporadically into the air.

The gunmen stormed Ezeonwuka’s residence after laying ambush for several hours. By the time their target finally appeared, they tried to kill him. It was further gathered that the deputy Igbo leader and the Ogirishi Ndigbo had earlier presided over security meeting with all security agencies and members of the Movement for the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) before the attack.

Narrating his ordeal, Ezeonwuka said his attackers were dressed in Mobile Police uniforms with bulletproof vests apparently to deceive people. He disclosed that the armed men tried to shoot him when he jumped the fence and ran away when they tried to kidnap his son who also jumped through the fence. Also speaking, the MASSOB Director of Information, Uchenna Madu said the attack on Ezeonwuka was coming barely some hours MASSOB arrested an armed robbery suspect along Onitsha-Owerri Road.

Madu further said MASSOB security had arrested a member of a notorious armed robbery gang that specialised in dispossessing motorists of their cash and other valuables. He said luck ran out on the suspect after his gang had successfully robbed a businessman along Oba Old Road Junction and tried to escape but was arrested while other members escaped.

The MASSOB spokesman said the suspect had been handed over to the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) for further investigation
.
