Euro 2012: England made it through to the knock-out stages of Euro 2012 with a narrow 1-0 win over Co-hosts Ukraine at the Donbass Arena in Donetsk on Tuesday.

Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney opened the scoring just after the restart with a simple header from close range.

Despite a late push from Ukraine, Roy Hodgson’s men held on to their lead and just did enough to secure all three points.
France Advance Depite Loss

Former World Champions France made it through to the quarter-finals of Euro 2012 despite losing 2-0 to Sweden in Kiev.

Les Bleus missed too many opportunities in front of goal and conceded an outstanding second half goal courtesy of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Erik Hamren’s men, who had no chance of making it through to the knockout-stages, looked in great shape and eventually made sure of the win thanks to a late goal from Sebastian Larsson.

Goalline Technology a necessity

Blatter - FIFA president Sepp Blatter has in the wake of the controversy involved in England's victory over Ukraine announced goalline technology is now a 'necessity.

The head of world football's governing body has in the past been resistant to the idea of introducing any such computerised systems to the game.But after an effort from Ukraine's Marko Devic clearly crossed the goalline against England on Tuesday night but was not spotted by officials, Blatter accepts there is no debate.

Even an additional referee on the byline failed to spot Devic's shot should have been ruled as a goal, which left Ukraine manager Oleg Blokhin irate.

And Blatter has now said on his official Twitter account: "After last night's match GLT (goalline technology) is no longer an alternative but a necessity."

The demand from England for goalline technology reached fever pitch in the summer of 2010 when Frank Lampard was not awarded with a goal against Germany at the World Cup.
Comprehensively

England trailed 2-1 in their second-round match when the Chelsea midfielder's 20-yard shot beat goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, hit the underside of the bar and bounced clearly over the line.

The 'goal' was not given and Germany went on to claim a comprehensive 4-1 victory to knock England out of the tournament.

UEFA's five-official system, which is preferred by president Michel Platini as an alternative to goalline technology, is currently on trial at Euro 2012.

Two linesmen and two additional assistants, who stay close to each goal to help decide if the ball crosses the line and to spot possible fouls, are in theory assisting referees.

But the failure of the assistant to spot Devic's 'goal' has added further weight to the argument for essential technology.

FIFA will decide on 5th July whether to approve the five-official system and two goalline technology systems currently being tested in England and Denmark.

The Hawk-Eye system, which is used in tennis, was trialled at England's friendly against Belgium at Wembley before Euro 2012.

Drogba Complete Shanghai (China) Deal

Chelsea Transfer News: Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has confirmed his long-expected move to Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua

The 34-year-old, who confirmed his intention to leave Stamford Bridge following Chelsea's Champions League final victory over Bayern Munich, has signed a two-and-a-half year deal reportedly worth £200,000 a week with the Chinese Super League side.

He will join up with former Chelsea colleague Nicolas Anelka, who joined the club in January. Drogba has been linked with Shanghai for several months after contract talks with Chelsea stalled over the length of a new deal.

The Barclays Premier League club had said they hoped to keep the Ivorian after he scored the all-important equaliser and then the winning penalty in the Champions League triumph in Munich last month.

Drogba said in a statement released by his agents on Wednesday: "I have considered all the offers I have received in the past few weeks, but feel that Shanghai Shenhua FC is the right move for me at this time.

"I am looking forward to a new challenge, to experiencing a new culture, and excited about the new developments in the Chinese Super League. When Chelsea went to China last year, we had a great time and I met some amazing fans. I hope to help promote Chinese football around the world and further improve the links between China and Africa."

Drogba scored 157 goals in all competitions for Chelsea, finishing with 100 in 226 league appearances since signing from Marseille for £24million in 2004, one of Jose Mourinho's first major signings for the club. He had an exceptional record in cup finals, scoring nine goals in nine different finals, including one in this year's 5-1 FA Cup final victory over Liverpool.

However, he failed to gel with Fernando Torres and began to find himself rotated at Stamford Bridge, despite the huge struggles of the Spaniard following his £50million switch from Liverpool, making it likely he would leave this summer.

Shanghai owner Zhu Jun said: "We have been wanting to sign Didier for a while, and are very happy that it has finally happened. He is an incredible player, who has won so many trophies in his career, we feel that his experience and ability will be a very valuable asset to our squad. Shanghai is one of the most influential cities in the world, and we are very excited to welcome Didier here."

Shanghai's new manager Sergio Batista said: "Drogba is a very good soccer player, his outstanding skills and amazing experience will give us motivation to improve our games. It is my honour to invite him to join in our team. At last I have to say that the club owner Zhu Jun did his utmost to bring Drogba to Shenhua."

UNIOSUN Post UME 2012 / 2013 – Osun State University 2012/2013 post UTME registration form is out, and the screening has been fixed to take place on the 16th day of June, 2012 in the university.
The registration forms could be obtained at the rate of #5,000 at designated bank branches around their six campuses of the University. These banks are:

How to complete the UNIOSUN 2012 post UTME Registration
Candidates are to register on-line by accessing the University website: www.uniosun.edu.ng to complete and submit an application.
They are expected to print two (2) copies of the application form after submission. One of these two copies should be brought along together with a copy of the candidate’s Original JAMB Result print-out on the day of the screening exercise. The second copy is to be submitted upon admission to the University.
What of Direct Entry Students?
Direct Entry candidates should complete the form on-line following the same process as above and report on the screening day.

What are the venues for UNIOSUN screening?

All candidates (UTME and Direct Entry) are to report for screening at the date and centers indicated on their online registration printout. Candidates must report at least one hour before the commencement of the exercise.

Access to the portal is through the use of scratch cards with PIN. Candidates require two scratch cards (one each for registration and result/placement checking), which are obtainable directly from any of the specific branches listed above, upon payment of N5, 000 (five thousand Naira)
