121  Forum / The Buzz Central / Breaking: Actor Robin Williams Found Dead At Home In Apparent Suicide on: 12-08-2014 02:18 AM
Oscar-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams was found dead on Monday from an apparent suicide at his home in Northern California, Marin County Sheriff’s Office said. He was 63.

The sheriff’s coroner’s division said it suspects the death was a suicide due to asphyxia, but the cause of death is still under investigation.

“This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken,” Williams’s wife Susan Schneider said in a statement.

Williams, who won an Academy Award for his role as a fatherly therapist in 1997′s “Good Will Hunting,” had been suffering from severe depression recently, his publicist Mara Buxbaum said.

Williams, who introduced his frenetic style on late 1970s TV series “Mork & Mindy” and had struggled with addiction in the past, had entered a Minnesota rehabilitation center last month to help him maintain sobriety.

His representatives at the time said Williams was not using drugs or alcohol but had gone to the center to “fine-tune and focus” his sobriety after working a longer-than-usual schedule.

The Marin County Sheriff’s office said it received an emergency call about noon local time on Monday, saying that Williams was unconscious and not breathing at his home near Tiburon, north of San Francisco.

Fellow comedic actor Steve Martin said in a tweet: “I could not be more stunned by the loss of Robin Williams, mensch, great talent, acting partner, genuine soul.”

126  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Husband Attempts Suicide After Stabbing Wife 3 To Death For Infecting Him HIV on: 11-08-2014 05:58 AM
Phillip Katongu, a man who comes from Wamba, Nasarawa State, has been arrested by the operatives of the Department of Criminal Investigations, Yaba, Lagos for allegedly stabbing his wife to death.

According to the police report, his late wife Justina was stabbed in three places in their home in Oniru Estate, Maroko, Lagos.

Katongu revealed that he has a wife in Nasarawa, and the deceased was his second wife. He tried to commit suicide after killing his wife, but neighbours forced their way in and immediately rushed him to the nearest hospital.

He explains that his reason for killing was because she had infected him with HIV.
“I married Justina, my second wife in December 2010. I later learnt that she had given birth to two girls for a man. The girls died of AIDS.

However, when we first met, she did not tell me all these. I explained to her that I have a wife with children and I wanted to marry her too. Before marriage, I told her we should go to hospital to conduct HIV test, but she refused and said that she was HIV negative. So we started sleeping together.”

She later told him about her status.
“I was angry and told the doctor who equally blamed her for not disclosing it to me. The doctor then tested me, and I was positive. We came back to Lagos and continued with the relationship because I loved her. But suddenly, she told me she wanted to pack out from my house that she was no longer interested in marrying me having had another person in Abuja. In fact, the man usually called her on phone while we were together.

I told her that with her status, she should not go and be infecting people with the virus. And that I will kill her and kill myself. We started fighting and I stabbed her. It was in the early hours. I stabbed her three times with a knife. She shouted and people were knocking at our door.

After she died, I stabbed myself, and the people broke the door open. I woke up to find myself in a hospital. I feel very bad that I killed my wife. I loved her very much.”

The murder weapon has also been recovered by the police.
127  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Fatal Killing of Unarmed African-American Teen by Police Officer Causes Uproar on: 11-08-2014 05:53 AM
The fatal shooting of a young African-American boy by police officers is causing uproar, and drawing comparisons to the killing of other unarmed black men including Trayvon Martin and Oscar Grant.

STL Today reports on Saturday afternoon a Ferguson police officer shot 18-year-old Michael Brown.

The fatal shooting outside an apartment complex sent angry residents into the street, taunting police.

His mother Lesley McSpadden said the shooting took place as her son was walking to his grandmother’s home.

19-year-old Piaget Crenshaw – an eyewitness, said she was waiting outside for a ride to work when she saw a police officer attempting to place the young man in a squad car.

According to Crenshaw, she saw Michael Brown, hands in the air, attempt to flee.

Several shots hit him as he ran. The high school teen was scheduled to begin classes at Vatterott College on Monday.

The fatal killing sparked a lot of backlash and tension flared off and on through the evening.

Brown’s stepfather Louis Head held a sign that read, “Ferguson police just executed my unarmed son!!!”

Mourners later gathered at a prayer circle and then had a candlelight vigil as darkness fell. They later took to the streets shouting.

Wary police officers stood near the 100 protesters with rifles. The protesters also went to the street outside the Ferguson police headquarters, chanting “No Justice! No Peace!”

Brown’s mother later appeared at the shooting scene and was reportedly heard saying “I know they killed my son. This was wrong and it was cold-hearted. (My son) doesn’t kill, steal or rob. He doesn’t do any of that.”

Rest in Peace Michael Brown.
128  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Meet Former OAU Student Union President Who Just Graduated After 13 Years (Pix) on: 8-08-2014 04:04 AM
When Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife former Student Union Government (SUG) President, Akinola Saburi was admitted in the year 2000, he had no feeling that he would not graduate on a record time.

His involvement in campus activism was what held him on campus for additional eight years. All started in 2003 when he was elected as the Secretary General of the students’ union and along the line, he became an acting president of the union when the incumbent president, Akinkunmi Olawoyin, was sick and could not perform his official duties again.

Saburi’s administration was said to be in constant face-off with the school authority on issues bordering on students’ welfare.

The union, according to investigations, always demanded from the authority to put things like accommodation problem, high tuition fee, overcrowded lecture rooms and hostels as well as policies they considered oppressive in the right perspective so as to make their studentship a worthwhile experience.

And at a time when there was no positive response, the students embarked on protests and the management fingered 13 of them as ring leaders including Saburi and consequently expelled them from school.

The students challenged their expulsion at the Federal High Court in Osogbo, Osun State, and the court ordered their reinstatement pending its judgment.

“But when we got back to school, we were advised to plead with the authority to reinstate us fully and this was granted on the condition that we must withdraw the case from the court,” Saburi, from Yewa North Local Government area of Ogun State, recalled. And after the pardon, according to him, some of them bowed out of unionism but Saburi and a few others did not.

So in 2006, Saburi popularly known on campus as “Malcom X” contested again for the office of the president of the union and one hour to conclude the election and announce the results, the school authority came up with a release circulating round the campus that Saburi was still on suspension.

Expectedly, the students’ union objected to this position, arguing that such explanation was too late since Saburi had already done his course registration, issued a valid student’s identity card and contested the election.

Because the students refused to dance to the tune of the authority, a fresh expulsion order was slammed on him. To enforce this, Saburi was arrested by the officers of the State Security Service (SSS) and arraigned the following day at a magistrate court on a 10-count charge. Saburi left the detention exactly on March 12, 2008 and was at home for one year and one month before he was recalled by the school authority to continue with his studies.

Saburi was asked to write an apology letter to the authority and provide guarantor letters from a first class traditional ruler, a senior lecturer and a student leader on what they called “his good conduct” before he would be allowed back in school.

Saburi returned in 2010 and still spent another three years due to the prolonged 2012 nationwide lecturers’ strikes and the students protest on campus. He came out of the university with Second Class Lower, the grade that is considered to be for above average students at OAU.

“I am happy to be graduated eventually while at the same time, I have no regret whatsoever over my actions. I considered my punishment as a sacrifice for a better tomorrow,” he said.

President Barack Obama received birthday greetings from around the world when he turned 53 years old on Monday, but some of those wishes weren't exactly well.

In Russia, protesters used lasers to beam a crude, racist image of Obama onto the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. The image showed the president in a birthday hat with a banana going in and out of his mouth followed by projections of the words "Obama" and "happy birthday" in English.

The Moscow Student Initiative took responsibility for the stunt on VK, a social network popular in Russia.

Across from the US embassy in Moscow today, Russians hung this racist banner addressing Obama on his 53rd birthday.

Racially-charged messages aimed at Obama have been cropping up with alarming regularity in Russia. Also on the president's birthday, a banner depicting Obama as the "Three Wise Monkeys" -- see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil -- was unfurled near the U.S. Consular Section in Moscow, The Washington Post reported.

A Brooklyn woman has beheaded and dismembered a mother of four and scattered her remains in pieces across Long Island over a $200 electricity dispute she refused to pay her because she wasn’t getting it.

Chinelle Latoya Thompson Browne rented a room apartment at Leah Cueva’s late uncle’s flat where Cueva also stays but she wouldn’t provide hot water or reliable electricity and wanted continuous payment.

Cuevas angrily confronted Browne on July 4 over non-payment of rent and utilities. On July 5, witnesses saw Browne entering the apartment and then heard a confrontation.

“No, Leah! What you doing?” a neighbor heard Browne’s gut-wrenching scream during the fatal attack. “Oh, no! Oh, no! I’m sorry! I’m sorry!”

Cuevas cursed back at Browne, telling her to “Shut the f--- up,”.

“The scare in (Browne’s) voice was like nothing I ever heard before,” a witness told detectives.

Leah Cuevas viciously hacked her victim, Browne, 27, in the neck and chest, cutting off her head.

Detectives are not yet sure if Cuevas had any help or if she was the only one who dismembered Browne's body and scattered her head and arms across Long Island. Cuevas faces a maximum of 25 years to life if convicted.
