Comment Kenya: Christians and Muslims Vow to Stay United

Stephen Astariko/The Star
Peace talks: Pastor John Mwaura of Full Gospel Church addresses the press after an interfaith meeting between Christian and Muslim leaders in Garissa.

Religious leaders from the Christian and Muslim faiths have vowed to remain vigilant on terrorists following twin attacks on churches in Garissa.

The religious leaders said those who attacked the churches were doing so as to create animosity and hatred between the Muslim and Christians who have been living harmoniously for decades.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Garissa town after visiting the attacked churches, the clergyman said the attacks has brought the Christians and Muslim communities living in North-Eastern region more closer than before contrarily to anticipation of the assailant who want spark off inter-faith conflict in the country. The chairman of pastors' fellowship in Garissa John Maura said the attacks have affected everyone including the Muslims since one of the police officers killed guarding the AIC church was a Muslim. "We treat the incident as an act of international terrorism and not a war between a Muslim and Christian faithful. The first casualty of the attackers was a Muslim police office guarding our church, but the terrorist were targeting the Christian worshipping places to stir despondency pitting the communities of two faiths" Pastor Maura lamented.

The pastor said the Christian community is touched by the solidarity shown by their Muslim counterpart in the country who apart from swiftly condemning the incident with strongest terms possible offered them consolation and material support. National secretary of the Council of Imam Sheikh Hussein Mahat Noor said that terrorist is a global threat to civilization and human existence that discriminate no religions, greed, and race affiliations and it requires concerted efforts by all peace loving human being to confront head on. "Five Islamic clerics were killed in span of two month early this year in Garissa and Dadaab refugee camps. The victims of the terrorist know no religious border and their aims are to fight human existence and they must effort by all" said Sheikh Noor.

The sheikh revealed that Muslim community in the town will make contribution to support the families of those killed and injured in the beastidily grenades and guns attacks which left seventh people killed and more than forty others injured. "We are making contributions to support our affected brothers and sisters to see them through this most difficult time and we shall make sure we will provide security to their places of worship by guarding outside their churches every Sunday for them to conduct their prayers. We will die with them if such incident occurred again" The Sheikh observed.

Dujis MP AdEn Barre Dualle urged the government to provide adequate security to protect the lives and property of the residents of the North-eastern which borders the war-torn Somalia noting that the region is likely to experience more targeted attacks from the weaken Islamist group Al-Shabaab because of its proximity to Somalia. "The mindset our security machinery must be changed now that our country is at war with terrorist group in Somalia. It can never be the business as usually in term of the country's security for our intelligent officers and they must proof to be equally to the task of the insecurity threats faced from international terrorist" the MP said.
