42  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / 2 men bag 17years for stealing Gov. Aregbesola’s cell phone on: 1-03-2014 03:41 PM
Osogbo High Court has sentenced Babatunde Ogunjobi, 33, and Abdulgafar Yusuf, 39, to 10 and seven years imprisonment respectively for stealing Gov. Rauf Aregbesola’s cell phone and duping with it.
Justice Saka Falola, who gave the verdict on Friday, said the convicts should serve the 17 years at the Federal Prison, Ilesa, because of the gravity of the offences.
The accused were convicted on charges of conspiracy, stealing and impersonation.
Aregbesola’s phone (Sony Ericson) valued N50,000, was stolen on Nov. 27, 2010 at Technical College sports ground in Osogbo.
The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Mr Dapo Adeniji, had told the court that Yusuf, a prison warder, stole the phone.
“He connived with Babatunde at Osun State Technical College, Osogbo, to defraud one Shenge Rahman of N200,000 with the phone on May 24, 2011.
“The two also defrauded the Owa Obokun of Ijeshaland, Oba Adekunle Aromolaran, of N500,000 on June 3, 2011with the stolen phone, number 08039404966, claiming to be the Governor of Osun.
“They pretended to be Aregbesola, demanding some huge amount of money from the complainants on several occasions.
“It was when the information got to the governor that they were both apprehended with the help of operatives of the Directorate of State Security, Osun’’, Adeniji said.
He said the offences contravened sections 1c 3, 8c, 484 and 390 of the Criminal Code cap 34, Vol.11, Laws of Osun, 2002 and 2006.
Adeniji commended the judgment, adding that justice had taken its course.
Counsel to the convicts, Mr Akin Ladipo, had pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy.

A young Chinese woman has run a marathon despite being pregnant.
Xu Yunyun said: “I have always been an enthusiastic runner and I don’t see any reason why I need to stop just because I’m pregnant.”
Amateur runner Xu Yunyun, 28, took part in the competition at the Beijing Olympic Park where she ended up taking centre stage.
Xu is expecting her baby to arrive at the start of March and believes the training would also make the delivery easier.
She said: “I have always been an enthusiastic runner and I don’t see any reason why I need to stop just because I’m pregnant.
I took an easy pace and didn’t overstretch myself, and my doctor told me the carrying on exercising is the best way to ensure a healthy baby is born.”
The expectant mother took inspiration from Paula Radcliffe MBE who ran twice a day during the first five months of her 2006 pregnancy.
The US Department of Health and Human Services says women who are active runners could keep taking part in the sport during pregnancy.

46  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / FG to spend N35.83bn on ex-militants in 2014 on: 28-02-2014 07:40 PM
Mr Kingsley Kuku, the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta, said on Friday that N35.83 billion would be spent in 2014 for the reintegration of ex-militants enrolled in the Presidential Amnesty Programme.
Kuku disclosed this in Abuja at a budget defence session with the House of Representatives Committee on Niger Delta.
He told the committee that a total budget proposal for the Presidential Amnesty Programme in the 2014 was N63.28 billion, of which N35,83 billion would expended on the reintegration component of the presidential amnesty.
He said another N23.62 billion was required for the payment of N65,000 monthly stipends to 30,000 ex-militants, adding that N3.82 billion will also be needed to cover the cost of operations in the Presidential Amnesty Office.
Kuku disclosed that about 2,200 transformed ex-militants were expected to be placed in either formal education or vocational training.
He explained further that out of the 1,100 that have opted for vocational training, 700 would be trained locally while 400 would be trained abroad.
According to him, the remaining 200 will be placed in foundation or pathway programmes that will be conducted within the country to prepare the delegates for placements for universities offshore.
He explained that of the 30,000 statutorily enlisted in the programme, 18,000 delegates have either graduated or are currently in either vocational or educational training facilities within the country and abroad.
“With this figure, we are left with a total number of 11,200 delegates awaiting placements in reintegration facilities,” he said.
The aide also informed the committee that in 2013, N38.90 billion was appropriated for the demobilised ex-agitators.
He added that in compliance with the UN Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) Charter Code, N546 million was provided for in the 2013 budget to take care of the reinsertion/transition safety allowance for 3,642 transformed ex-agitators and their leaders enlisted in the third phase of the amnesty programme.
He disclosed that in 2013, 2,400 delegates were successfully deployed to vocational training centres both within the country and outside.
“Of this number, 671 delegates have since graduated, earning globally recognised certificates in such fields as marine technology, marine mechanic, commercial driving, agriculture, drilling, boat building, oil and gas technology, automobile technology and of course aviation,” Kuku said.
Speaking further on the activities of the Amnesty Office, he disclosed that in 2013, 834 delegates were placed in about 100 universities across the world.
He also said that a total of 459 delegates were placed in private universities in Nigeria for the 2012/2013 session.

A Russian tourist has been left with horrific injuries after he was allegedly beaten after offending locals when he rang a sacred religious bell.
Sergey Bogdanov has now sent a video message to President Putin appealing for help to get him back home.
The 28-year-old had gone on holiday to India and ended up settling for a while in the village of Mandrem when the incident happened.

Mr Bogdanov, from the Russian seaport city of Kaliningrad, said he was badly beaten by a mob after ringing the bell and was even refused help by doctors.
He told Russian media by telephone: 'It seemed really peaceful here and the locals are friendly, all that changed when I went to a local temple to take a few pictures and I saw a bell which I rang.

'Apparently the bell is only rung on sacred days when somebody dies, and before I knew it there was a mob rushing up to the temple and I was dragged out onto the streets and kicked and beaten with sticks.
'Some monks dragged me away from the mob but they then didn't help me at all, and I had to make my own way to the local medical centre where the doctors had heard about my apparently sacrilegious act – and they also refused to help me other than giving me a few bandages.

'My wallet and my money had vanished and I had no alternative but to go back to my accommodation in agony. I managed to get a telephone message to my mother who flew over immediately but I need paperwork and money to fly back with her.
'My poor mother almost had a heart attack when she saw me, she is doing her best to look after me but I need proper medical attention that I can only get it seems in Russia.'
Mr Bogdanov has appealed to Putin to help him get the paperwork and a ticket back home via the Russian Embassy in Mumbai.

50  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Why Nigeria’ll not break up under Jonathan’s watch—Clark on: 28-02-2014 06:52 AM
Elder statesman and Ijaw Leader, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark was the guest lecturer at the 7th Distinguished Lecture Series of School of Media and Communication, Pan Atlantic University, Victoria Island, Lagos, last Wednesday. He spoke on burning national issues including the raging Boko Haram insurgency, war against graft and comments that Nigeria may disintegrate before 2015 among others.

CHronicling the history of Nigeria dating back to the 1914 amalgamation of the Northern and Southern protectorates, Clark said that propositions that the nation will disintegrate should be totally disregarded, as what is playing out in the country today is only a tussle for political power.
He said: “We have been together for the past 100 years. It was in 1914 that Lord Lugard amalgamated the Northern and the Southern protectorates. Don’t ask me why the amalgamation because I do not want to dwell on that. But firstly, it is apt to note that there was a true federation particularly in 1961.
Among Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Obafemi Awolowo and the Sarduana of Sokoto, Ahmadu Bello, there was a federation and these premiers agreed that there was going to be a federation where everybody will be equal. We are going to have a federation where every component and region will be allowed to develop at its own pace. Then, these three leaders were able to develop their own region.
“It was in 1956 that the late Chief Anthony Enahoro moved a motion in the Parliament that there should be independence, but the Northerners said no, that we were not ready. So, when they came out of the Parliament, they were booed and jeered at. And the northerners vowed never to come to Lagos again. Then, this was followed up by the independence in 1960, Nigeria did not break.
Even in 1966, five majors in the Army decided to plot a coup that saw many people killed, including Tafawa Balewa, the Sarduana of Sokoto, Chief Akintola, Chief Okotie-Eboh and some soldiers. All these played out and Gen. Yakubu Gowon came into power but Nigeria did not break…
“Even in 1967, there was a civil war which claimed so many lives because the Igbo felt they were marginalized and therefore they fought for a cause. Under Odumegwu Ojukwu, they seceded from Nigeria, but Gowon insisted that Nigeria must remain one. After the war that ensued, Nigeria became more stronger and united, the Igbo were re-integrated into the country because Gowon declared that there was no victor, no vanquished. Since then, so many things have happened, but Nigeria did not break.
“When in 1914 Lord Lugard amalgamated the Northern and Southern protectorates, he did not say one would be superior to the other; he did not say one would rule Nigeria forever.
Massive support
The Northerners have ruled this country for 38 years, military and civilian, whereas others have ruled for just 16 years. The Igbo have just ruled for 6 months, but heaven did not fall. Now that the South-South who has not been there before is now there, heaven wants to fall.”
He recalled the 1979 election, saying the South-South massively supported Alhaji Shehu Shagari, a northerner and NPN candidate, and has always supported the North and other regions for the Presidency noting that there was no reason the South-South, a minority, will not be supported to complete its tenure of eight years in the presidency.
Jonathan has right to re-contest elections: Speaking further, Clark said that Section 137 of the 1999 constitution allows the President to go for two terms of four years each. “So, it is an aberration for anybody to say that Jonathan does not have the right to re-contest in 2015 presidential elections. Section 137 guarantees the President the right to go for two terms of four years.
President Jonathan was only a running mate to the late President Musa Ya’Adua in the 2007 elections. He only contested as President in 2011, therefore, it is a mix-up to say that Jonathan’s tenure started in 2007.”
Obnoxious statements: Describing statements credited to General Muhamadu Buhari, Adamu Ciroma and Asari Dokubo that there will be war if Jonathan wins or does not win the 2015 elections, Clark said they are not enough to break the country.
His words: “So, when you are talking about Nigeria in the shadow of 2015, I am very optimistic that nothing will happen to our dear country. I don’t see Nigeria breaking in 2015. People are just saying this because two American scholars who conducted a research some years back, postulated that Nigeria is in a balance or that Nigeria will break. They based their postulation on jostling for political power and the small arms being imported into this country.
Now certain obnoxious statements have been made by the likes of Buhari, Geidam, Alhaji Suleiman, Adamu Ciroma, Asari Dokubo and others that there will be war, bloodshed, that there will be no Nigeria, if Jonathan wins or does not win the 2015 elections. These statements which support the assertion by the American scholars is not enough to break Nigeria.
Let it also be known that I, E.K. Clark openly responded to the National Assembly, especially the Hon. Aminu Tambuwal-led House of Representatives not to play double standards. When the House ordered the Inspector General of Police to arrest and investigate Asari Dokubo, who was only reacting to the statements of some northern elements who are threatening to make the country ungovernable if Jonathan wins the 2015 election, it was my open letter that made the matter die down till date.”
On Corruption: “Jonathan has done a lot in fighting corruption in this country. Looking at the issue of fuel subsidy, even the son of the former Chairman of his party was prosecuted. But however, I suggest that with the political will he has to fight corruption, that a Corruption tribunal should be set up, to charge criminals who steal our public funds, no matter how highly placed they are. This is being done in other countries.
It pains me that most corrupt Nigerians still work freely in the streets. Rather than keeping shut, they go about accusing the present administration of corruption. Take for instance, the suspended CBN governor, who has been playing a holy than thou attitude, it has just been made known that he was involved in financial recklessness at the CBN. Sanusi should not be allowed to go scot free. He should be made to go to jail, if found wanting after ongoing investigations.
Boko-Haram challenge: Reacting to Tuesday’s killing of students of Federal Government Girls College in Yobe State, by the deadly Islamist sect, Boko Haram, Clark affirmed that all hands needed to be on deck in combating the insurgency which has claimed many lives and properties. He however blamed the insurgency to statements credited to some northerners that Nigeria will be ungovernable if Jonathan wins the 2011 Presidential elections.
“I think the federal government has been making frantic efforts to contain this insurgency. Government recently created a new army division to support the armed forces that are there already. These insurgents are terrorists, because they have already been brain-washed that when they kill, Allah (God Almighty) will reward them after death in heaven, with seven virgins which is all fallacy. One major challenge is the issue of genocide. Because when the Jonathan administration uses full force like Obasanjo did, so many innocent Nigerians will be killed.”
51  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / 900 Turtles Found Dead On Indian Beach on: 28-02-2014 06:02 AM
Hundreds of sea turtles have been found dead along the coast in southern India, conservationists say, blaming illegal fishing near their sanctuaries.
Supraja Dharini of the Tree Foundation, a marine conservation group, said trawlers fishing illegally along the coast of Andhra Pradesh state were not taking measures to stop turtles from getting entangled in the nets.
She said more than 800 dead Olive Ridley turtles were washed ashore on Saturday, and 100 more were found on Sunday.
“Such a huge loss of the species in one night is more than three times the total number recorded in the past six years in the region,” she said, adding: “To say it is a tragedy would be a gross understatement.”
Mr Dharini said more than 45 trawlers were fishing about four kilometres from the shore days before the turtle deaths, whereas fishing regulations make it mandatory for trawlers to operate at least eight kilometres from the shore.
Olive Ridleys are one of the five species of sea turtle found in Indian waters.
The turtles are classified as “vulnerable,” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and nest on Indian shores between January and April.
The World Wide Fund for Nature estimates that there are 800,000 female Olive Ridleys worldwide.
52  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / NGO uses Patience Jonathan to defraud 327 women in Delta, Police say on: 28-02-2014 05:59 AM
The police in Delta on Thursday said it arrested two suspects in connection with an NGO which allegedly defrauded 327 widows and poor women of N1.6 million in the state.
Briefing journalists at the “A” Division in Asaba, the Police Public Relations Officer, Celestina Kalu, said that the victims were from Asaba and environs.
Ms. Kalu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said the NGO known as “Women Relief and Restoration Initiative”, was claimed to have been established by the wife of the President, Patience Jonathan, to empower women in Anambra and Delta.
According to the spokesperson, Olubunmi Monu, a resident of Asaba reported the matter to the police that in September 2013, one Amechi Ndah, also of Asaba, introduced her to Adaeze Nwokoye of Awka, Anambra.
“Mrs. Nwokoye, the purported coordinator of the NGO, and Mr. Ndah claimed that the said NGO was established by the President’s wife, Dame Patience Jonathan, to empower women.
“Consequently, she (Monu) and other women numbering 327 from Oshimili South Local Government Area of the state were defrauded of the total sum of N1.6 million.
“Meanwhile, the said Ndah has been arrested and also arrested is 71-year-old Mr. Anene Nwokoye, of security department of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra, husband of the principal suspect,” she explained.
The spokesperson said that Mrs. Nwokoye avoided every contact and disappeared following the development, but she was tactfully invited to bring more forms as many women were waiting with their money to register.
Ms. Kalu also said that Mr. Nwokoye was arrested on February 26 when he approached the complainant (Ms. Monu) to collect additional N250, 000 on behalf of his wife.
She said that upon Mr. Nwokoye’s arrest, items recovered from him were 78 copies of the NGO’s membership forms.
The police spokesperson also disclosed that the NGO had extended its operations to other parts of the state, duping unsuspecting victims of their hard earned money.
The command advised members of the public to be wary of dubious NGOs whose major objective was to impoverish rather than to empower people.
In an interview with some of the victims, including some churches, the victims said they were jolted by the offer to become members of the NGO established by the president’s wife.
According to them, one of the specific conditions spelt out was that one must be a Christian to become a member.
Besides, they were made to pay the sum of N3, 000 each to register as members to be empowered by the NGO, and an additional N2, 000 to enable them obtain loan from a micro-finance bank in Onitsha.
A Pastor, Samuel Atawe, with the Redeem Christian Church, in Oko near Asaba, said that the coming of the NGO raised their hope. He said he regretted that the Oko community became worse off.
“The NGO was introduced to us by one our respected women members and the community trusted them, and no fewer than 250 women obtained the forms from seven different churches in the community.
“The instruction given is that if you are not a Christian, you must not fill the form, so it was the churches they used and different men of God encouraged the women to key into the programme since the First Lady is involved.
“In our axis in Oko, all the seven different churches were involved and the people paid N3, 000 as registration fee and another N2, 000 to open an account with a micro-finance bank in Onitsha,” he said.
He expressed gratitude to God that arrest had been made concerning the NGO as the operators had disappeared with people’s money, failing to empower the people in December 2013 as promised.
According to the pastor, the people of the community were already becoming suspicious of the churches involvement in defrauding them, especially because of the woman who introduced the NGO to them.
“I thank God for this development, this is a prayer answered and with this arrest of the woman’s husband, my job is restored and the community will know that of a truth we were interested in their welfare,” he said.
He advised that the people should be more careful, especially with issues or proposals coming from the church.

A Ghanaian comedian, Musah Iddrisu, and a Congolese, Inana Cedrick, have been arrested the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

Iddrisu and Cedrick were arrested during the inward and outward screening of Ethiopian airline passengers respectively at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.

NDLEA Commander at the airport, Mr. Udoh Nsikak-Abasi, said, “Iddrisu was found to have ingested 450 grammes of cocaine. He was on his way to Thailand.  Cedrick was caught with 1.500 kilogrammes of heroin which he tried importing into the country.

“A third suspect, a Nigerian, John Nwadilichukwu, was also arrested.  He was to receive Cedrick at the airport, collect the drug and pay him for smuggling the drug.”

The heroin was said to have been hidden inside a luggage.

Twenty-year-old Cedrick, who claimed to be a secondary school student in Tanzania, said, “I was given the drug in Nairobi by a Nigerian woman who told me to give the drug to her husband, Nwadilichukwu, in Enugu.

“I wanted to use the money they promised to pay me in buying beads for sale in Tanzania. I am a secondary school student from a poor home.”

Iddrisu, aka Charles Udunehi, who bought the cocaine for $19,000, said he had wanted to sell them in Thailand.

He said, “I got involved in drug trafficking because of my financial predicament.

I bought the drugs in Ghana, ingested it and came to Enugu airport. As it is a new airport, I felt the security will not be like other airports, but I was wrong.”

Chairman of the NDLEA, Mr. Ahmadu Giade, said adequate efforts had been made to apprehend drug traffickers at the Enugu airport.

He said, “We have already deployed our officials to the Enugu airport before it commenced international flights. Adequate security measures have been put in place to apprehend drug traffickers at the airport.”

This incident happened at Igando in Alimosho area of Lagos State.
It was gathered that the man had gone to purchase 2 bags of rice from a shop owned by one Iya Ibrahim but he didn’t have money so he proposed to drop Seun, an aluminium apprentice, as collateral and return later to pay. Iya Ibrahim was not available that time so her son Ibrahim who was in the shop agreed to the proposal.
She was surprised to find Seun in her shop when she returned later to learn about the exchange. The 15-year-old boy was held hostage as the unidentified man failed to show up until later in the evening when the pastor of his church, a Celestial Church of Christ around the area, saw him at the shop looking despondent.
He was later freed after the pastor, known simply as Oluso in the neighborhood, settled the matter. He asked the shop owner to take responsibility for one of the stolen bags of rice while Seun’s father, a co-worker with him in the church, should pay for the other bag of rice.
When Seun was questioned on how he met the fraudster, he said he did not know the man’s house or have other information about him as he met him casually at Hotel Bus Stop about 300 metres to his residence where a church member had sent him on an errand to play lotto, popularly known as “Baba Ijebu”.
58  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Jonathan’s home town has turned to a war zone; over his cousin’s kinap on: 27-02-2014 05:47 PM
Three days after the kidnapping of Inengite Nitabai, President Goodluck Jonathan’s cousin and adopted father, in Otuoke, Bayelsa State, the President’s country home has literally been turned into a war zone.
It was learnt that there was a massive deployment of teams of soldiers and riot policemen in the community from Abuja.
On Wednesday, security forces were said to have taken over every part of the community and its sister communities, combing the creeks to fish out the abductors.
An eyewitness, who craved anonymity, said residents had become intimidated by the large troops, saying it was “like medicine after death”.
The eyewitness said, “It is high time the relevant authorities did what is needed to check kidnapping and other vicious crimes in the area. For instance, in Otuoke, for more than seven months now, there has been no electricity supply in the area.
“From 7pm, every household resorts to generators. The cacophony of noise arising from those generators can be deafening. Probably if the whole area was quiet, the gunmen could not have successfully carried out their dastardly act without being noticed.
“Apart from electricity, unemployment is another issue of serious concern. In a situation where some people live in opulence and others live from hand to mouth, you can appreciate the consequences.”
As of Wednesday, the Nitabais were still apprehensive about the abduction of the 70-year-old compound chief of the Jonathan’s family.
Their fear was borne out of the fact that more than 72 hours after the abduction, the kidnappers had yet to call any member of the family.
A family source, who preferred anonymity, said the development had made them to be weighing many options with regard to the motives of the abductors.
He said the family members had resorted to prayers every morning and evening, urging Nigerians to join them in praying for their abducted father.
Meanwhile, the Ijaw Youth Council (Worldwide) has condemned the abduction.
The IYC said the abduction coming at a time Jonathan needed to be in the best frame of mind to face the challenges of governance was most unfortunate.
The group said it was determined to work with security agencies to fish out the kidnappers.
It said, “To this end, IYC has set up a three man team to coordinate and collaborate with security agents to fish out the kidnappers.

Charming Krista plays with, trains and handles all the snakes at a local reptile house where she even feeds the alligators.
Little Krista Guarino is an expert snake handler despite being just 9 years-old.
The brave schoolgirl lives with a staggering 30 reptiles, including anacondas and a 12ft python at her home in Michigan, America.

She eats, sleeps and plays with the creatures – some of which are twice her size – and held her first snake when she was just two.
The plucky schoolgirl has even been bitten a few times but none of the snakes are venomous and Krista claims the bites don’t even hurt!
She said: “I’m never afraid of snakes, not even a little bit. I’m crazy for them.”

Krista, the eldest of three children, was first introduced to the animals by dad Jamie, 33, who is a snake specialist.
He said: “Snake was one of her first ever words. I knew when she was very little that they were going to be her passion.
From an early age she wasn’t like a normal kid – she wasn’t afraid of snakes at all.

She just wants to go up and grab them and pet them and play with them.”
During the summer holidays Krista helps Jamie out at their local reptile house and shows no fear when playing with, training or handling any snake.
The father and daughter team also enjoy weekends searching for rattlesnakes – one of the most dangerous species in the world.
And they upload their hair-raising videos of all their adventures to their SnakeHuntersTV channel on YouTube.
Krista has already set her sights on opening her own reptile zoo when she’s older because she wants to change perceptions about snakes.
She added: “Some people are afraid of snakes and they want to kill them but I think they’re really cool and interesting.
One day I want to own every kind of reptile in the world.”
