1  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / We’re not a terrorist organization – OPC on: 7-06-2013 06:50 PM
THE Oodua Peoples Congress, OPC, has said that it was not a terrorist organistion urging that the group should not be equated with the Boko Haram Islamic sect.
In a statement by OPC’s National Coordinator, Otunba Gani Adams argued that the OPC remains a visible organisation just as faulted those trying to equate the group with Boko Haram.

Otunba Adams said “it has come to the notice of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) that some prominent people from the Northern part of the country who are not happy with the determination of the Federal Government to put a stop to the wanton killings in the north have decided to cast aspersion on the OPC by equating it with the Boko Haram sect. We have decided to remain neutral and maintain our peace since the orgy of killings started. But we have taken note of statements credited to some prominent Northern leaders, especially since the crack down on the Boko Haram sect.”

He added that  “the OPC is a visible organisation, with known addresses all over the country. Its leaders are also known and accessible to all Nigerians, including security agencies. We draw our strength from our membership of more than seven million. It is also on record that we don’t engage in clandestine activities, since our activities are known to all and recorded for history by the vibrant and courageous Nigerian media, and therefore in no way a security threat to the country.”
Setting the records straight, he said the group has consistently frowned at the killings  and wanton destruction of properties.
According to him “it has become necessary for us to come out and speak on this very serious and controversial issue, since our silence may be interpreted to mean admission of guilt. To most discerning Nigerians, nothing can be further from the truth than this statement credited to the former police boss. The activities of the OPC in the last ten years in the south-west of the country speak volume of the peaceful nature of our group.”
On the activities of the group, Adams said the OPC is in the fore-front of the “promotion and propagation of the cultural values, ideals and rich history of the Yoruba race, even beyond the shores of Nigeria. At this juncture, let me list some of the prominent Yoruba festivals that our organization has put on the global cultural map with our involvement. They include the popular Osun Oshogbo festival in Osun State, Oke Ibadan festival in Oyo State, Okota festival in Ondo State, Olumo and Lisabi festivals in Ogun State, Oranmiyan festival in Oyo State and Oya festival in Kwara State, among several others.”
“Lets us remind Nigerians that the OPC remains committed to the promotion of the rich cultural values of the Yoruba people, with a view to a peaceful co-existence with other ethnic groups in the country. Therefore, let nobody make attempt to drag us into an unnecessary conflict in order to make a scapegoat of the OPC. As leaders, those seeking to drag the OPC into their conflict should direct their energies at efforts that will bring to an end the killings, hostage taking and kidnappings in the north and other parts of the country”, he stated.

4  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Container truck crushes man, govt meat van on: 7-06-2013 10:46 AM

Tragedy struck on Thursday at Ikeja Along Bus Stop on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Lagos State, after a heavily   loaded 40-foot container truck fell on a government meat van, crushed a passerby, and wounded several others.

Eyewitnesses said the truck had swerved off the road to avoid colliding with some policemen, who were chasing a motorcycle rider, before the incident occurred around 9am.

The victim, identified as Samuel Ogunnaike, was an employee of a popular phone dealer in Computer Village, Ikeja, and was on his way to the office when he met his death.

Any hope that he could survive the accident was dashed after he was trapped for about four hours before his body was retrieved from the wreckage.

The van, Eko Meat Van, with number plate XY 433 AA was levelled after one of the containers fell on it. The driver and three passengers in the vehicle, however, escaped with injuries.

Eyewitnesses blamed the accident on the police.

One of them, Michael Energy,  said overzealous policemen, who were chasing a motorcyclist, caused the confusion that led to the accident.

He said, “I was coming from Agege when I saw a commercial motorcyclist, popularly called okada, driving against traffic. He was carrying a man and a lady as passengers.

“Some police officers who were coming from Ikeja Along tried to stop him, but he ignored them.

“They gave him a chase and brushed the okada with their vehicle, which sent the rider and his passengers sprawling on the road.

“Another police van came, and seeing the scene, decided to wait. At this point, the two police vehicles blocked the road.

“The Eko meat van was coming on the same road, and since the police had blocked the major road, he had no option, but to stop.

“The trailer, carrying two containers, was on top speed. I think his brake failed because he was unable to control the speed.

“The driver of the trailer, while trying to avoid colliding with the police officers, swerved and ended up ramming into the van and killing the man who was passing by.”

Energy claimed that immediately the accident occurred, the police vehicles disappeared from the accident scene.

A member of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, who would not want to be named said, the corps treated two of the casualties at the accident scene, before they were taken to the state’s hospital.

He said two other people that were badly injured had also been taken to an undisclosed hospital before the NSCDC officials arrived.

Mukaila Rauf, a 24-year-old meat seller, who escaped unhurt in the meat van, said he sat at the back of the van.

Rauf said, “I saw the police pursuing three bikes. Suddenly, we heard the trailer hooting. He tried avoiding us, but its tail hit the van and one of the containers fell on us. Our driver was badly injured.”

The atmosphere quickly turned to that of hostility as the crowd jeered and booed the policemen who later cordoned off the area.

This began a long line of traffic, just as passengers of vehicles began to disembark and started trekking to their destinations.

A police officer at the scene, however, told Punch Metro that the police was not to blame for the accident.

She claimed that the accident had occurred because the bike rider and the meat van had taken one way.

She said, “The motorcycle and the van were taking one way when the police were trying to stop them. The driver of the truck then on top speed hit the van.”

South-west coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, said, “We got conflicting accounts from the policemen and the public, so we don’t know exactly the number of the casualties and what exactly transpired. We only took out one dead body.”

Timeline of rescue efforts

At 11.00am, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority brought a towing truck which had to be pushed by policemen to the accident scene after it broke down. This drew jeers from the crowd.

When it was 12:00pm, it became clear the truck was useless and had to be abandoned as LASEMA and NEMA brought their generator and gadgets to remove the trapped body.

At 1.14pm, the rescue agents were tired. The generator was off and when they tried to restart it, it didn’t respond for some time.

At 1:16pm-, a bigger towing truck belonging to Dex Project Limited, arrived the scene, but at this time, the body had been retrieved  from the gravel-covered ground.

At 1.18pm, Ogunnaike’s corpse was removed and put into a blue bag, then carried into an ambulance belonging to the State’s Environmental Health Monitoring.

School children stuck

Some metres away from the accident, a train was on motion. It was fully loaded with school children from eight different schools who were occupying different compartments of the train.

The children were on excursion.

The train, however, got a call to stop because part of the accident happened on its tracks.

By the time our correspondent was leaving the scene at 2pm, some of the schoolchildren had started disembarking because the road was blocked.

5  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Bash Ali causes security scare in Abuja on: 7-06-2013 10:35 AM

Bash Ali

A former World Boxing Federation title holder, Bash Ali, caused a scare at the National Stadium, Abuja on Thursday in his desperate bid to get the attention of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Jonathan was at the stadium to inaugurate a youth campaign, Rhythm ‘n’ Play, aimed at enhancing mass youth participation in sports activities and age grade competition.

Immediately after the President delivered his speech and was making his way out of the Velodrome venue, Ali, who has been appealing to the Federal Government to support him in the staging of a world-record boxing fight to be hosted by Nigeria, started moving towards him.

When the boxer discovered that the President did not notice his gesture, he raised a placard and moved desperately towards him.

As he moved to run towards the President, a security agent stationed near him quickly held him.

The attention of dignitaries, who attended the event, including the President, turned to Ali while he was struggling desperately to break lose from the security agent’s firm grip.

It was at that point that the President asked that the boxer be allowed to approach him.

Ali engaged Jonathan in a discussion in hushed tone for about three minutes to the bewilderment of dignitaries who were already standing to see the President off to his car.

It will be recalled that Ali had on May 20 staged a protest at the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abuja in pursuit of his bid.

He was said to have been locked out of the premises alongside his supporters.

Ali had been using every means at his disposal to protest his failure to get the Federal Government to support him in staging a Guinness Book of World Record bout.

The Thursday event was attended by the National Chairman of the PDP, Dr. Bamanga Tukur; Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State; Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Moses Adeyemo; Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Ali Olanusi; and members of the Federal Executive Council among others.

They all witnessed the drama caused by Ali.

Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi

RIVERS State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, has said he has no intention to leave the Peoples Democratic Party.

Amaechi, who spoke in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. David Iyofor, on Thursday explained that contrary to the comments by the State Publicity Secretary of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Mr. Jerry Needam, he was still in the ruling party.

The governor dismissed claims that he had approached the ACN as outright lies and a figment of the imagination of the opposition party’s spokesman.

Needam had, in a statement in Port Harcourt, said the ACN had nominated two members of the party in the state to discuss on the possibility of accepting Amaechi as a member.

But Amaechi insisted that he was already fighting his suspension from the PDP in court, adding that he had never met with anybody to discuss a movement from the ruling party to the ACN or PDP.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Review of the Constitution, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has said if the committee’s recommendation on 6yrs single tenure succeeds, President Goodluck Jonathan will sacrifice his presidential ambition in 2015.

“But we don’t want Nigerians to say that we have colluded with the executive to give tenure elongation to the President and certain governors. That means somebody instead of staying for eight years; he will now be staying for 10 years."

Ekweremadu, who is the Deputy Senate President, also said some governors would sacrifice their second term ambitions in 2015.

He stated this in Abuja on Thursday while explaining the fate of the President and some governors on the proposed six-year single tenure amendment to the 1999 Constitution.

The deputy senate President said, “For us, it would have been easy to say let’s put it six years and let whoever wants, including those who are available now, let them benefit, so long as it will help in keeping overheating the system away.

10  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / It's Time To Make Your Salaries & Allowances Public ––Falana Tasks National Asse on: 7-06-2013 10:13 AM

Popular human rights activist and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, said on Thursday that the public perception that members of the National Assembly were overpaid would not change so long as they did not disclose their full salaries and allowances.

“Disclose your salaries and allowances so that the secrecy surrounding it will become a thing of the past. This is the reason you are constantly harassed in your constituencies each time you visit them. It is called jumbo pay in the media.”

Falana stated this at a ceremony organised by the House of Representatives in Abuja to mark the second anniversary of the 7th Assembly (2011-2013).

Speaking on the topic, ‘Public Perception of the 7th House of Representatives’, he expressed surprise that an appeal was entered against a Federal High Court decision that on the strength of the Freedom of Information Act 201, it was appropriate for lawmakers to disclose their pay package.

Falana, who advised that the appeal should be withdrawn, added that pursuing the case further would create the impression that there is indeed something to hide about the money they take home.

Falana said while the entire National Assembly and its bureaucracy budgeted N150bn for their operations yearly, a single agency in the executive, the Central Bank of Nigeria, budgeted over N300bn.

He said this goes to show that their is so much waste of Nigeria's money by the executive.

11  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / See The Causes Of Smelly Váginá In Ladies & How To Stop It on: 7-06-2013 10:09 AM
Most women experience feminine issues from time to time. Unfortunately the fact that the issues are common doesn’t make them any less embarrassing. Feminine odor is especially frustrating, because it can leave you feeling unclean and gross, even if that’s not the case.

There are lots of causes for feminine odor. Below are the top five and their solutions...

Bacterial vaginosis
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) sounds like a big scary term, but it’s actually very common. In fact, BV is the most common cause of váginal odor, according to the Mayo Clinic.

What stress does to your body
Every vágina is filled with naturally occurring bacteria, and BV is simply an overgrowth of that bacteria. According to Mary M. Galenberg, M.D., OB-GYN for the Mayo Clinic, most women in their reproductive years will experience at least one case of BV. The cause is unknown, but unprotected s3x and frequent douching can put you at a higher risk. Other symptoms include itching, soreness and discharge.

Some cases of BV will go away on their own, but Planned Parenthood recommends that all women with BV symptoms visit their doctor for treatment to prevent rare but serious complications. Treatment for BV is usually as simple as a course of antibiotics.

Yeast infection
A yeast infection is also very common (and very uncomfortable!). They present much like BV, with the addition of a thick, white discharge. Yeast infections don’t require antibiotics and instead can be treated with one- or three-course váginal anti-fungal treatments. Your doctor may also recommend a one-time oral anti-fungal treatment.

Symptoms of a yeast infection
Treatment for yeast infections has become very simple and can even be purchased over-the-counter. Most of these treatments tend to get messy, so it’s better to use them overnight.

Galenberg recommends you visit your doctor if you are experiencing these symptoms but have never been diagnosed with a yeast infection, as well as if treatment doesn’t resolve the symptoms or you get four or more infections in one year.

Séxually transmitted diseases

Some STDs can cause feminine odor, the most common being chlamydia and gonorrhea. Both diseases are common and easy to treat, but can cause serious complications if they go untreated. Unfortunately, both are also often undiagnosed because they may or may not produce symptoms. The most common symptoms of chlamydia and gonorrhea include painful urination and puss-like discharge, although an unpleasant odor is often present as well. See your doctor immediately if you are experiencing any of these symptoms and avoid risk by abstaining or using protection during séx.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) occurs when bacteria (usually séxually transmitted) travel through the vágina into the uterus. It is often a late-stage result of an undiagnosed STD, such as chlamydia. PID usually isn’t diagnosed until you experience chronic pain or have trouble getting pregnant because it often doesn’t have symptoms. If symptoms of PID do present, they may include pelvic pain, odor, heavy discharge, fever, fatigue, painful intárcourse or painful urination.

PID can often be treated with antibiotics, though it may leave behind scar tissue that has lasting effects. According to Galenberg, lasting effects might include chronic pain, infertility or ectopic pregnancies.

Poor feminine hygiene
It’s possible that the cause for your feminine odor may be nothing more than poor hygiene. We’ve got a lot of complicated parts down there, and caring for them isn’t always easy. Make sure you’re covering all your bases to keep your lady parts fresh and clean.

First and foremost, make sure you’re washing thoroughly every day. Women have oil and sweat glands in the váginal area that, while completely natural, can cause odor if not attended to. Use mild, fragrance-free soaps, because anything else can upset that sensitive area and lead to even more troubles. Make sure you wipe from front to back after using the restroom and wear clean underwear every day, even if you don’t have time to shower.

12 Must-haves for women's health
There are a lot of products out there that claim to help with odor and keep our parts “presentable,” but stay away from them. Dou ches, sprays, cloths and creams all claim to help women achieve some sort of super-cleanliness, but they actually cause more problems than they solve.

Douches remove some of the bacteria that work to keep your vágina healthy, and scented products have been known to cause irritation.

12  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / South/South Won't Accept Any Other Position But President ––E.K Clark Threatens on: 7-06-2013 09:50 AM

We are still getting threats and more threats for people who are known to be close to the President as power play leading to the 2015 epic battle begins to take shape,  observes.

South-South leaders on Thursday led by the ex-Federal Commissioner, Chief Edwin Clark, met to discuss the ongoing fight between President Goodluck Jonathan and Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi with the aim of reconciling them but end up creating more troubles...

The meeting which held in Abuja at the instance of Clark, had two issues on the front-burner, the mid-term performance report of the President and the lingering crisis from the fall-out of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) elections which has pitted the two South-South sons against each other.

Clarke, in his remarks at the meeting, emphatically declared that South South is not interested in any political office lower than the Office of the President, which Jonathan currently occupies.

He noted with dismay Amaechi’s undying crave to be the chairman of the governors forum which according to him is premised on the Rivers governor’s ambition to use it as a platform to become the vice president in 2015. He said Amaechi's ambition with be resisted at all cost.

Clarke said Amaechi had threatened to hand over to Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano who according to the elder statesman, does not like the South South zone.

“Here lies my worry”, he said. “If reports that Governor Rotimi Chubuike Ameachi’s undying craze to be the Chairman of the Governors’ Forum is premised on his ambition to use it as a platform to serve; is it the interest of the people of the South-South or his personal interest?”

Clark further warned that “If he [Amaechi] must contest in deference to his constitutional right, let him contest for the office of the president because the South/South of today is not interested in any other office than the President.”

The scene.

The scene.

There was pandemonium at the Ox Bow Lake Road junction, Yenagoa in Bayelsa State, after a bus went up in flames in a traffic jam on Wednesday.

Our correspondent who was at the scene of the incident observed that the thick ball of flame that emanated from the Mitsubishi L300 bus forced motorists to flee the area.

The scene immediately attracted onlookers and sympathisers, who initially mistook the vehicle for a passenger bus.

But two persons, a driver and a passenger, struggled out of the bus unhurt.

They were, however, concerned about the bus and its content.

The apprehensive young men remained speechless for sometimes.

The driver, who was obviously confused, shed tears as he asked his colleague that he identified as Uche to call their boss.

“I am finished. What will I tell my boss?” he queried himself.

The driver also refused to keep his distance from the burning bus, forcing sympathisers to drag him out of the area. They advised him to calm down and thank God for his life.

While Uche was faltering on a telephone with the owner of the bus, identified as Akpomedaye, one of the sympathisers grabbed the handset and told the woman that her bus was on fire.

The sympathiser, who identified himself simply as Sunday, said the woman took the incident in her stride and urged the weeping driver to be calm.

Uche later explained that the bus was used to supply drink to customers.

On how the incident occurred, he said, “We were in the bus and all heard a little explosion under the bus. We saw smoke and immediately fire came out but we managed to escape.”

The snarl on the road before the fire incident also cleared as panic-stricken motorists behind the ill-fated bus were seen doing a U-turn to escape the fire.

The police in Lagos have arraigned a teenager, Olanrewaju Aremu, at a Yaba Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stabbing his father to death.

PUNCH Metro had reported that Olanrewaju allegedly killed his father, Victor Aremu, in Langbasa, Ajah area of the state.

The charge sheet read in part, “That you, Olanrewaju Aremu, on May 1, 2013, at about 11:30pm at Oke Nla, Langbasa, Ajah, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully kill one Kayode Victor Aremu, aged 46 years, by stabbing him with a kitchen knife and thereby committed an offence, punishable under Section 221 of the Criminal law of Lagos State.”

The Magistrate, Mr. Olatunji, ordered that the accused be remanded in Ikoyi Prison pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecution.

The matter was adjourned till July 1, 2013.

Although the suspect had claimed to be 18 years, the charge sheet stated that he was actually 20 years.

Olanrewaju had told PUNCH Metro that he killed his father because the deceased never loved him and had maltreated him on several occasions.

He had said, “My father used to maltreat me and my mother was aware of this. Sometimes he would not give me food or money. He sent me to University of Ilorin but I did not get the course I wanted. I was admitted to study Geology but I wanted to study Biochemistry.

“My father forced me to go to the school and after I failed, the school asked me to leave. I started working with my father afterwards and I used to follow him to work. He did not want to send me to school anymore.

“On that day that I killed my father, I was ill and I told my parents but they ignored me. I do not really know what came over me. I took a knife and followed my father upstairs and stabbed him many times. He ran downstairs and I chased him downstairs and stabbed him once more.”

TIME Icon and actress, Omotola Jolade Ekeinde said in a recent interview with Encomium, that she inherited her physical endowment from her mother and how it’s been a struggle for her to stay slim as her job requires.

What is the secret of your radiant look?

There is no major secret. That’s the truth. Most of them were inherited. I inherited the good stuff, so also the bad one. If you see my mom’s picture, she actually looked like a young girl. Till she passed on, we used to call her forever young, even before that song came out.

My mom had a teenager look, even when she was almost 50. She was a very hippy and curvy woman. That, she passed on to me with vengeance. That’s why it has been a very big struggle for me to stay as slim as my job requires.

But people are saying you had done an implant that perhaps brought out you hips

I have also heard that but there is nothing like that. I have never done any surgery or implant. It’s just me being extremely careful and conscious of my body, job and everything. Naturally, as a human being, sometimes i get it perfectly right, sometimes, the body just does what it wants to do. I just keep trying.

18  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Man sentenced to death by hanging in Abia state for killing his wife on: 6-06-2013 07:59 PM

Culled from Punch

An Abia State High Court has sentenced a banker, Mr. Theophilus Ajakaiye, to death by hanging for killing his wife, Theodora. (pictured above)

The convict allegedly murdered his wife on October 12, 2009 at Azumini Ndoki in the Ukwa Judicial Division of Abia.

Until her death, Theodora was an employee of Guaranty Trust Bank Plc.

The legal battle between the deceased’s family and the accused began soon after the alleged killing until the judgment recently.
The Presiding Judge, Justice T.U. Uzokwe, said in his judgment that having heard from the accused person, learned counsel for the accused and the prosecuting counsel, the offence carried a mandatory sentence which is death.
He said the court had no power to reduce the sentence and that being the case, he had no option but to sentence the accused.
The judge said, “Though the accused was not seen killing the deceased, I find that the accumulated circumstantial facts found proved that the accused indeed murdered his wife, Theodora Ajakaiye.
“Suffice it to say that I find the accused guilty as charged and I convict him accordingly.”
The sentence read, “Theophilus Ajakaiye – The sentence of this court upon you is that you be hanged by the neck until you be dead and may the merciful Lord have mercy on your soul.”
In the allocutus, counsel for the accused pleaded for mercy on behalf of his client.
He said, “I thank the court for this well considered judgment. The accused has no criminal record. We plead for mercy. There are two children to the marriage and they have already lost their mother.”
It was learnt that the convict had yet to appeal against the judgment.

There was confusion at a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Sabo, Lagos on Tuesday after Mrs. Pearl Nwashali, a  48-year-old suspect standing trial for fraud, slumped moments after she was called into the dock.

“I still very much believe that the defendant and her counsel are deceiving the court. The court also believes that the defendant is not prepared to settle the claimants but deceiving the court with the concurrence of her counsel."

The magistrate, Mrs. Folarin William, said this while describing the fainting incident as “a drama intended to deceive the court and pervert the course of justice.”

Anyway, it took the intervention of the registrar, warders and some people in the court to avert what seemed like an unfolding tragedy. She was later taken out of the dock to a seat.

Following the incident, her defense counsel, Mrs. A.U Onyeagura, to ask the court for an adjournment.

When the case was recalled minutes later, both the woman and her counsel were no longer in court.

Magistrate Folarin William thus stood down the case. She observed that the defendant had been coming up with different excuses and tricks since the matter started in April 2012 to avoid paying the claimants their money.

She said, “The court wonders if the money was ready, and whether the defendant would have paid the complainants today as she had promised since April, 30, 2013, if she had not fainted? Now that the case is recalled, there is no defendant in court and no counsel for her.”

You may wish to know that Mrs Nwashali had been arraigned since 2012 on 4 counts of fraud, stealing.

She defrauded two women, Philomena Eguenu and Osinowo Oluwatoyin of N1m after calling the duo to Victoria Island, Lagos to inspect and buy a shipload of oil product. She also issued a dud GT Bank cheque worth N500,000 to another person, Adegboyega Kolade.

Mrs Nwashalishi, through her defence counsel, A.U Onyeagura, had promised to settle the complainants and at a time, said cheques had been written.

But she keeps coming up with different tricks to avoid paying the money.

20  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / CONFUSION!! North Kicks Against Ban Of Boko Haram on: 6-06-2013 07:30 PM

The North on Wednesday disagreed with the National Assembly on the proscription of two Islamic miltant groups – Boko Haram and Ansaru – by President Goodluck Jonathan.

While the North through its two prominent groups, the Arewa Consultative Forum and the Northern Elders Forum, faulted the ban, the National Assembly insisted that it's a welcome development...

To the ACF and the NEF, the Jonathan administration has through the ban thrown a spanner in the works in its efforts to end bloodletting in the North through amnesty for Boko Haram and Ansaru members. They said they were waiting to see how the Federal Government would address the crisis in the North.

In an interview with Punch in Kaduna, the ACF’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Anthony Sani, argued that with the ban, negotiations with Boko Haram would be difficult.

He asked, “Now that they (government) have proscribed the sect, can they now negotiate with a non-existing group?

“Before, the government told us that it was using a stick and carrot approach; that is, negotiation and state of emergency; now that they have proscribed it (Boko Haram), how will the negotiation work?

“It is the government that told us that a stick and carrot approach will work together. Now that they have gone to proscribe Boko Haram, let us see how they will apply the stick and carrot. We pray that they succeed.”

Sani wondered if the government would negotiate with members of the sect individually instead of meeting the group.

He added, “The government said they needed the emergency in order to reclaim the seized town taken over by Boko Haram. This made Nigerians, including us (ACF) to give them the go-ahead. We supported the state of emergency to reclaim seized part of the country.

“But now that they have proscribed the sect, we don’t know how they will apply the carrot. Now, how can you negotiate with an illegal entity? The group has just been proscribed. They have announced it. They are applying the stick now but we don’t know how they will apply the carrot.”

His counterpart in the NEF, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, said the proscription contradicted government’s efforts to negotiate with the sect. Abdullahi said, “But in this case, people say they don’t know what this Boko Haram is, they don’t know the members and they are trying to get the members to come out for dialogue .

“If you are looking for dialogue, you have to expect that there will be people who will come out under certain respectable conditions.

“Two things have happened simultaneously - the declaration of a state of emergency which connotes the declaration of martial law. You cannot expect somebody to come and meet soldiers under emergency conditions and now you have the proscription.”

Also, the Northern Youth Consultative Forum, NYCF, National President, Alhaji Aminu Mohammed, said “We are all intelligent. You cannot create many things at the same time: Boko Haram, amnesty committee, fighting insurgents and proscribing the group.

“How do we trust the government? Is it not the government that is messing things up? Let them tell us who Boko Haram is? Where are they?”
