The popularity of Afrobeats continues to soar. There have been attempts to represent it as a new genre, however, Afrobeats has a rich history that dates back decades. Nigerian music legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti is largely credited as the pioneer of Afrobeats.

A gem in his time, Fela became that iconoclastic African figure, around whose weight the African music movement properly took off. Very few of Africa’s legendary musicians, even with all their goodwill, are able to match Fela’s standing.

Everywhere he went; he was worshipped, as much for his activism as for his music. Throughout his active years, Fela made a conscious effort to nurture others, and those he inspired have become a key part of his legacy.

His son Femi, who joined his band at one point, is his most famous student. Femi became his father’s alter ego for years until he started branching out on his own, moving away to start the Positive Force band in the 80s. It was just around the time after he had been invited to play at the New Morning Club in Paris, as well as at the Moers Festival in Germany.

Positive Force grew quickly, and was on the bill at many 90s events. Together with Dele Sosimi, a former keyboardist of his father’s band, they made a name for themselves, establishing a strong unit that would later be appreciated generally.

Femi gradually walked out of his father’s shadows, and was no more seen as daddy’s little boy, a syndrome many a son of legends suffer from.

He released his first international album Shoki Shoki in 1998, and got involved in other productions either as a stand-alone or on collaborations. His 2011 album Fight to Win, which featured the likes of Mos Def and Jaguar Wright, was a huge success; same as the 2002 remake of his father’s all-time classic Water No Get Enemy.

A three-time Grammy Award nominee (2003, 2010, and 2012), with several albums to his credit, Femi has successfully managed to carve his own legendary status. The general theme that runs through Femi’s music is not too different from that of his late father; it is the everyday Nigerian story of bad governance, corruption, stalled infrastructural works and those never-ending recurring social economic blues.

Outside the studio, he’s become the voice many would pay attention to on social issues.

Notwithstanding the many challenges that have bedevilled the system down here, and which he addresses with a fair level of passion, he’s had a relatively stable career.

In 2004, as a way of preserving his father’s heritage, Femi began work to rebuild the very famous Fela Shrine. It was at the same time that he recorded his live project Live at the Shrine.

An assembly ground for everything Fela, the Shrine has over the years played host to some of the biggest music stars in the world from Damon Albarn, and Hugh Masekela to Erykah Badu. Every year, the facility hosts the Felebration concert, as a way of remembering the good works of Fela, and also to discover new talents and promote African music.

An inspiration to Nigeria’s upcoming musicians, Femi is finding ways of passing on some of the knowledge he acquired from his father, to generations after him.

His son looks set to step into his shoes, as he has taken up the playing of the alto Saxophone to continue in the Kuti music kingdom tradition.

Femi is also working with some new talents; recently he collaborated with young act Wizkid on the latter’s Jaiye Jaiye single.

An amazing 16-years-old Nigerian/Canadian, Ebony Osunrinde, who goes by the name “Wondagurl” has just been credited as a producer on “Crown,” a track on Jay-Z’s new album “Magna Carta Holy Grail.” Wondagurl just finished 11th grade at Chinguacousy Secondary School, and she started out at producing sounds after watching a video of Jay-Z and Timbaland working in the studio together when she was 9. She bagan downloading music software and teaching herself how to use it by watching YouTube tutorials. “I wanted to do the exact thing that he [Jay-Z] did. Anybody can be successful, it doesn’t matter where you are from.” she recently told TheStar in an interview.

When she was 14, she made it to the quarter-finals of Toronto’s Battle of the Beatmakers. She won the title the following year and went on to sign an exclusive management deal with Black Box.

According to Ian Stanger, a representative with Black Box, “It’s amazing to see somebody with that much talent working as hard as she can to make the most of it at such a young age. It’s her work that people should be paying attention to, not that fact that she’s 16.”

Earlier this year, Ebony sent the beat to her friend Travis Scott, a younger rapper and producer from Houston who met Ebony last year. He happened to be in the studio with Jay-Z when he received it, and when he told her that the cut had made it to the album, she thought he was joking.

The sound that landed on Jay-Z’s album began with a reggae song. Ebony sampled the music and added her own twist using computer software. “It has a lot of bass and a lot of bounce.” she explained.

She said when she told her mother the good news, she cried. Ebony got her passport last year and hopes to meet Jay-Z someday. Before now, she also produced a song for Travis Scott.

A Port Harcourt based artiste, M-Kaze, recently consulted with Bar Baric Entertainment for promotional services, for which among several bloggers and micro-bloggers, his label chose Linda Ikeji.

All the bloggers sent invoices and were pre-paid. By 9:41am on the next day, Tuesday, 18th June, 2013, Linda Ikeji was paid N50,000 (Fifty Thousand Naira) in line with her quotation, which indicated that the AD would be posted in 48 hours.

Aside from the fact that Linda Ikeji Blog could not accept a brief from which they were supposed to write their own unique story, but requested a full pre-written press release, things really started getting awry when by Thursday evening, the client called to complain that their AD had not been posted.
All avenues were employed in getting in touch with Linda Ikeji, and her staff, yet to no avail. Eventually, she was sighted on Twitter tweeting links from her blog, and a tweet was sent to her demanding the AD be set up immediately. Instantly, we received a call promising that the press release on M-Kaze would be posted “first thing tomorrow morning” (Friday).
On Saturday, at noon, another call was placed to the Linda Ikeji team, after the advertorial had not showed up the entire morning. They claimed they were having difficulties posting the link to M-Kaze’s video. Knowing quite well that the same link had been posted by more than 15 other blogs, yet eager to avoid debates which would further delay the promotion, the root URL to the video was provided within the hour. Still, same link was still being requested over, and over again, via various channels, till 5pm on Sunday. At that point, we had to specifically request that the AD was not posted on a Sunday, since Sundays had the least internet activity. They agreed, claiming we’d see our advert on Monday.

All this while, I was dealing with tens of calls of lamentations, and threats of contract termination from my clients, most of the calls I made to the Linda Ikeji contact number were either cut off, or unanswered. When eventually, I would contact them via text or Twitter with a strongly worded message, they’d give me a very brief call, claiming they’ve been driving, and making more promises for “first thing tomorrow morning” again. I began to visualize Linda Ikeji and her staff akin to Dangote truck drivers.

By Monday night, everyone had become fed up with the routine of the Linda Ikeji “first thing tomorrow” antic. The AMA Sound CEO who had never called me directly, did so at this time, requesting that the article be withdrawn and our payment be refunded. A text message was sent again to Linda Ikeji after which her which a call was put through to us for consolation, but after hearing that we were inconsolable, they agreed to make the refund, again, “first thing tomorrow morning”. They even sent us a text message urging us to collect the money physically, like though we could just walk into our computer, unto Linda Ikeji’s blogspot.

Even though there was no refund made to our account first thing in the morning of Tuesday 25th, 2013, as usual, the surprise however, was that no payment was made at all, even by 4pm. This time around, a call to Linda Ikeji was not taken lightly, as the receiver of the call made it clear she was not the person, Linda Ikeji, but the Business Manager of the blog, and that she had better things to do than repaying our money. Going ahead to use several expletives in referring to us.

Wednesday, still no refund, yet an additional feature now was a claim that our N50,000 had been refunded.

On Thursday, 27th June, I had made clear that this incidence of Advance Fee Fraud would be first reported to GTBank, then the EFCC, and finally, the Police. Several threats and insults were hurled from the Linda Ikeji camp.

Linda Ikeji herself who had come in direct contact with the client, AMA Sound, and made a claim that no money was ever paid into her account regarding their promo. Instantly, she effected the transfer (5:04pm, Thursday, 27th June, 2013).

The purpose of publishing this incidence is primarily to make a call to all upcoming artistes and entrepreneurs who have fallen for this Linda Ikeji Promo Fraud to come forward. Obviously, threats have been made to them but with the necessary courage, they will be recompensed. Secondly, I want to make it absolutely clear to everyone who may be mutual acquaintances to myself and the culprit, that for making me lose such a valuable client, I’m suing herself, and her entire establishment for breach of contract, and seeking punitive damages against Linda Ikeji, and the Linda Ikeji Blog.

Afro beat musician, Femi Anikulapo Kuti, and Starboy, Wizkid, are currently in the studio doing what they know how to do best. An ecstatic Femi posted about the song, Jaiye jaiye, on Twitter.

He tweeted, “Off to bed, BIG day 2mor performing at Nigerian Idols then must rush to the studio to record with Wizkid.” As a father, Femi had to find time in his busy schedule to feature on Starboy’s song.

He tweeted, “But you stress me a little coz I perform that day and have to rush to the studio then travel next day to France when I should be resting ooo lol!!”

An apologetic Wizkid showed his appreciation and gratitude for Femi’s time. He tweeted back, “I know sir. Pardon the urgency. Lol… means a lot.”
