A 20-year-old woman, Rafiat Oseni, has been brought before an Ebute-Meta Magistrate’s court for allegedly killing her day-old baby by flushing him down a public toilet.

The incident happened at Alaba Rago Market,  Ojo area of Lagos State.

It was learnt that Oseni, who hails from one of the Northern states in the country, worked as a sales girl in the market and had entered the toilet pretending to ease herself.

She was said to have forced the baby into the toilet, but the baby got stuck in it.

He died as people were attempting to rescue him.

The magistrate, Mr Olanrewaju Olatunji, in obvious shock, asked the suspect why she decided to kill her own child.

Instead of responding, Oseni burst into tears and pleaded for forgiveness.

Olatunji then called the Investigating Police Officer, Woman Corporal Veronica Uket, who narrated the incident.

She said, “Oseni went to the public toilet on January 3, 2014 around 2.30pm. She was said to have pretended that she wanted to ease herself.

“She came out and nobody suspected anything. When she left, the baby started crying. It was another woman who wanted to use the toilet that first saw the child and called the attention of the woman in charge of the public toilet.

“People went there and saw that the baby was stuck inside the toilet. By the time they removed him, they saw that he was already dead.”

Uket said the suspect could not be found on the day of the incident, but she was caught the following day when she showed up again in the market for work.

She was subsequently handed over to the police who arraigned her on Wednesday on one count of murder.

The charge reads,  “That you,  Rafiat Oseni, on January 3, 2014, at about 2.30pm at Alaba Rago Market Ojo, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully kill a day-old baby and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State,  Nigeria,  2011.”

The defendant’s plea was not taken.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Richard Odigwe asked for the remand of the defendant in line with Section 264 of the Administration of Criminal Justice, Lagos State Nigeria, 2011.

Odige added that the remand would help the police obtain legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution.

The magistrate agreed to remand the defendant in the Ikoyi Prison pending legal advice.

The matter was adjourned till March 10, 2014.

 Before travelling to Switzerland for the World Economic Forum, president Jonathan had officially presented the list of 12 new ministerial nominees to the Senate for further consideration.

It will be recalled that as of today, ten vacancies exist, as one Minister was fired in August and nine others in September, 2013. President Jonathan had, over a week ago, pledged he would submit the list of new Ministers to the Senate for confirmation, as soon as lawmakers resume from their recess.

The Nigerian Senate spokesperson, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, confirmed the news. Jonathan's letter was read by Senate President David Mark at plenary in Abuja.

The Senator representing Rivers Central Senatorial district, Magnus Abe has been hit by a rubber bullet shot by officers of the Rivers State police command.
This was confirmed by his Personal Assistant and Information Officer, Honour Siranwo.
Senator Abe had led members of Save Rivers Movement, to a venue where they were to hold an inauguration and thanksgiving programme for the Obio-Akpor Chapter of the group.
Governor Rotimi Amaechi was expected at the event before the incident occurred.
In his reaction, Chief of Staff, Government House Port Harcourt, Tony Okocha said the police wants to militarize the state.
Okocha said the Save Rivers Movement had applied to the state police command.
According to him, the Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, orchestrated the attack. He also alleged that he bribed the Police Commissioner in the state, Joseph Mbu to carry out the attack.
According to report, the police shot sporadically and released tear gas to disperse the crowd.
In the meantime, Senator Abe is lying critically in the hospital.

activities of the parties and his withdrawal from the party.
The former president, in the letter, said he was withdrawing from all
activities of the party because the PDP had been negating the
principles of morality, decency and discipline in its decisions,
especially as they affect the South West where he comes from.
The letter, dated January 7, 2014, according to a source at the
national secretariat of the party, was received in the office of Tukur
on Wednesday, 8 January, 2014. It is believed that President Jonathan
also got his own copy on Thursday.

The three paragraph letter reads:
'While I believe that a good and truly national political party
must be a microcosm of the nation in its membership, made up of all
sorts of characters from near-saints to near-satan, I also believe
that on no account should a known habitual criminal that is wanted
abroad to face criminal charges levelled against him be extolled as a
political leader in a respectable and wholesome nation-building
political party.
'Buruji Kashamu has been so extolled in PDP in South-West
geo-political zone which I personally find unsavoury. Politics played
by any national political party must have morality, decency,
discipline, principles and leadership examples as cardinal practices
of the party. I have attached here recent documents that clearly
indicate that your extolled PDP Zonal Leader in the South-West zone of
Nigeria and an indigene of Ogun State is, to say the least, not a
credit to the party as a member, let alone being a zonal leader.
'Since I stick in my practice of party politics to the hallowed and
cherished principles enunciated above, I take this opportunity to let
you know that while I continue to remain a card-carrying member of
PDP, I cannot and I will not subscribe to a wanted habitual criminal

National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) after being found in
possession of counterfeit money.
39-year-old Mfundu Angela from Congo was apprehended at the Murtala
Muhammed International Airport with $240,000 (N40.8 million) worth
of fake currency.
The suspect is said to have intended to transport some goods, along
with the contraband, to her native country via Cargolux Airline
heading to Kinshasa but was intercepted when the money was discovered
hidden in dictionaries.
Speaking on the arrest, NDLEA commander at the airport, Mr. Hamza
Umar, said the seizure was made following reasonable suspicion on the
consignment. 'The suspect, who hails from the Democratic Republic of Congo,
brought a sewing machine and a bag containing clothes and five
dictionaries for export to Congo.
'There was high suspicion on the consignment and in the process of
search, the dictionaries were found to contain 24 envelopes containing
$10,000 each,' he said.
The suspect, a divorcee and mother of two, said that the money was
given to her by her boyfriend
