242  Forum / The Buzz Central / Pastor Chris Okotie Finds Love Again With A Young Damsel on: 6-07-2013 12:34 PM

I hear Pastor Chris Okotie is set to give marriage another try, and in his usual style the handsome preacher has found love in another beautiful but much younger damsel, who is based in Lagos.

Sources say her name is Delphine but she is not a member of his church. She worships in "a popular church here in Lagos" and it appears Pastor Okotie just bought her a car as special gift. Or did he give her the car he collected back from his ex-wife, Stephanie Henshaw?

Whatever, lets keep our fingers cross by wishing and hoping that this one is for real!

243  Forum / The Buzz Central / I Don't Use Charms On Ladies But I Handle Them Well In Bed ––Cripple Opens Up on: 6-07-2013 12:19 PM
Pedro Ken Ogbebor, alias New Yorker is a 46yrs old cripple, residing by the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium Benin City. He is one person that his disability had never hindered from embarking on any mission. Although he has not been to America before, his American accent gave him the name, New Yorker.

Even as a cripple, he is popular and loved by many including women...
Saturday Vanguard spoke with this father of three whose wife abandoned few months ago on why he is a fan of beautiful ladies despite his disability. This encounter was quite revealing as .com learnt
. Excerpts:

Why do you bear the name New Yorker when you’re not from New York?

I started answering New Yorker when a friend of mine bought me a new bike. Then, a plane was flying above us at the same time, so we just said this is our plane flying to New York. So when I left there, I wrote New Yorker at the back of the bike and that was how the name became a house hold name in Benin City. Infact, people outside Nigeria know me as New Yorker and I act like a New Yorker now. That is why I always advise anybody who is disabled not to feel ashamed, but mix up with people and make friends. Don’t allow people to intimidate you because you are disabled.

As I am now, a lot of people love me.I got married but my wife left me because I don’t have money. I have three children but since she left, I have been coping well with the beautiful children that God gave me: two girls and a boy. I don’t feel disabled each time I see my children. They go to school and mix well with other children. If you are disabled, don’t lament too much. All you need to do is thank God for your life, give joy to people around you, tell them that your disability is not a problem to you. I always have fun with people particularly girls and I am a happy man.

How did you become crippled?
My mother told me that when I was a baby, I woke up one morning and shouted. They rushed me to hospital and gave me injection. They said it was convulsion. It was that injection that affected my waist. They said it affected my veins and ever since, I couldn’t walk. I was crawling until my mother said I should stop crawling . It was when I grew up that I asked my mother why I was disabled. That is why people should be careful where they take injection. If it was now, I would have filed a suit against the hospital that did this to me. Look at me on a wheel chair but I don’t like to lament about it. Perhaps that is the way God wants it to be and I cannot question God.

Was it because of your condition that your wife abandoned you?
I don’t really know. All I know is that when she was with me, I tried to make her happy. She was a weight lifter when I met her and we fell in love. She had three kids for me and I was shocked when she left me. Maybe, it was the advice of friends but that was foolish. If you are a woman and you love a man, you don’t allow friends to deceive you. Obviously, her friends might have mocked her that she was married to a cripple and foolishly, she forgot how we loved each other and our three children.

But I believe she is regretting her actions now because few days ago, I went to the stadium as usual and somebody told me she came to my house and was calling the children but they refused to answer her. They said my children told her that she is wicked for abandoning them because their father is a cripple and that she should go and leave them alone. That was what happened. Friends have been helping me and my children are okay. My first daughter is 12 years old, the second one is seven years and my son is six years old.

How do you cope with sports?
The truth is that I love sports a lot but it did not favour me. I was the first black man to play wheelchair tennis in Africa. At that time, I was doing my best to sensitize people on the need to play wheelchair tennis but wheelchairs were not available then. I even told my coach then to help sensitize our people so that the rich people will help us provide wheelchairs but he did not show any commitment and that dream died. That actually demoralized me as a sportsman but today, you can see people benefiting from it. I played basketball, wheel chair tennis and table tennis but sports did not favour me.

I prayed to God to give me what would favour me because as the first disabled sportsman in the stadium here, I should have known my level now. I was a power lifter and some of the people I trained then went to America and the UK. So at a point, I said all my friends have travelled, I am the only one here. I decided to quit the game. Infact, after that time, when people would be training as weight lifters, I would be laughing at them but before I knew it, one of them travelled to America . One even got a presidential Award of MON. But I still give thanks to God because he knows the best. My only prayer now is for God to bring somebody that will help me train these children because I want them to be educated.

Since your wife left, how have you been coping with women because I found out you have a lot of female friends and people also claim you use charms to seduce beautiful ladies?
The truth is that staying with women gives joy though some people view it differently. I feel good when I am with a woman. If you can satisfy a woman, you don’t have a problem. It is not all about money. Women like men who satisfy them. And I think I am good in that. I don’t have money to spend on a woman but I have my own way of satisfying them. Women always love me even though I am a cripple. They don’t care. Women love bold men, people who can protect them and not really money.

It is only the greedy ones that are after money. But real women search for satisfaction. No woman has ever rejected me. You can see that I am a fine boy. There was a day a white girl walking along Airport road followed me till I got home. She gave me her numbers, that she wanted to be my friend. So women admire me a lot despite my condition. I don’t use charms on anybody. It is all lies. You know some people would fail in getting a woman but when I succeeded, they would go about talking rubbish. I have never charmed any woman.

Let me tell you, I go to club, I party with friends and that created the impression that I may be a bad guy but I am not. People said I used charms to catch women because they noticed that any girl I talked to would always follow me. But when they now understood the kind of person I am, they no longer think that way. I don’t use charms on women at all. They love me naturally because I am gifted.

Again, I have never been involved in crime although I am aware there are disabled persons who get involved in crime. I have never been to a police station. I am even better than some people who walk with two legs because I don’t involve myself in anything I know is illegal. If I know that you are a criminal, I won’t even come close to you. I only want to do things that will give people joy, that will make people help me and not what will make people hate me. God has always been good to me.

245  Forum / The Buzz Central / How This Beautiful Yoruba Actress Begged For Food On The Streets Of London on: 6-07-2013 09:32 AM
Nigerian-born radio presenter at Sky UK and Ireland, Abike Ade, in this interview, speaks on issues relating to her acting career, broadcasting, her late husband and other personal issues that many don't know.
Although her situation is better now, below is what she told Punch about her sad past:

How has it been working as a broadcaster in the United Kingdom?

It’s been very very challenging.
How challenging? What kind of stress you go through?

The challenges vary. It starts from building one’s image, keeping it up and getting better and better on a daily basis.
So, have you been able to build your image to a level you are satisfied with?
The stress starts from meeting up with the required standard from fans, individuals and at the same time keeping with my duties as a mother. I continue to work on my image as one is never satisfied. I strive to continue climbing until I reach my best. My best is yet to come.

How did you come up with the idea of presenting a Yoruba programme in London? How has the acceptance level been?
Good question. I started with acting. In 1998, I lost my husband to armed robbers in Nigeria. Just a month before the death of my husband, a young talented Nigerian, Ayo Coker, approached me to work with his newly established radio station. The radio station was named ‘N’Power Radio. I never thought that I could present anything but Mr. Coker encouraged me by saying that he saw me in some movies and he thought I could present on radio. I embraced the opportunity and that was how I ventured into radio broadcasting.

How was your first day on the job?

I was then the first female to present a Yoruba programme cum adverts on radio before others joined. My first day was quite daunting and let me say ‘scary;’ but with the support of Mr. Coker, it went well. However, let me say that I voiced jingles most of the time then. The Nigerian community, mostly Yorubas, embraced the idea of presenting in Yoruba language. It was a sort of relief in terms of being able to express their concerns in their mother tongue and having someone listen to their needs out there.

Why did you relocate to London? You started acting in 1998 and by now you would have been a big shot on the Nigerian movie scene.I did not relocate to London initially. My husband sent me here to study. Mind you, I was working with the then Nigerian Airways before my husband asked me to travel out to further my education in order to benefit his business. Yes I would have been a big shot in Nigeria by now but let me remind you that I was not into full acting while in Nigeria. I only did some acting while I was in school. I only started to act in movies in London and stage shows before I ventured into home video acting in 1995. I did not return back to Nigeria due to the fact that first, I lost my husband. He was my backbone. Second, I have nothing to come home to even though I have family members back home. I decided to stay here in Britain and start a new life.

Why do you have a tatoo on your Bosom ?

There is nothing wrong with having a tattoo on your body. It’s all about choice. Second, my own tattoo has something to do with my daughter and it’s personal. Therefore, I’m not talking about it and I have no regret having a tatoo on any part of my body. If you need to know, I do have more than one and it’s my choice, I love it.

Do you intend to remarry soon?
Of course, I would love to remarry at any time. I would love to remarry in God’s own time, because it is not good for any lady to be single. Apart from the Biblical aspect of it, our traditions and community do not respect a single woman. For a lady to command respect, she needs to settle down with a responsible man. I don’t have any problem dealing with men’s advances. Ladies are meant to be wooed by men. I’m a matured woman.

Starting a new life is not as easy as it sounds. How was it for you intially?
To God be the glory, things are great. All thanks and adoration to the most high God. Initially it was very very rough and I mean rough to the point that I became a destitute, begging to feed. I had no papers to remain in the country. I moved from one place to the other to avoid immigration. Though I came into the country with a student visa but after the death of my husband, I did not wish to return to Nigeria. But the UK Home Office asked me to leave their country. Then, I started sleeping rough. I had to fend for them and with God on my side, I tried my best. Now, my yesterday has now given birth to my today.

How has it been combining work and raising your two kids?

Well, it was not easy. However, God has been faithful and able in all areas, so I thank God.

Are you planning on coming back to Nigeria?

Not at the moment; I lost my sister to armed robbers in March.

Are you afraid to come because of the insecurity in the country?

Yes. Nigeria is a ‘no go area’ for me. I have a registered charity organisation here in UK. The charity is in support of the disabled, homeless persons and people/community suffering from poverty.

248  Forum / The Buzz Central / Exposed! Police Oga Forced Corporal To Arraign Innocent Man For Murder He Didn't on: 5-07-2013 10:16 AM

Shock pervaded the quiet atmosphere of the Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, after an investigating police officer, Corporal Alagbe Olumide, admitted that he was forced by his Oga to arraign an innocent man, Ayodimeji Alegbeleye, for a murder crime he never committed.

Alegbeleye, 29, was being tried for the murder of one James Igbahan in January 2013 at Ajah. The police had claimed that the accused stabbed Igbahan with knife in his left ribs which led to his death...

After 2-counts were read to him, and he had pleaded not guilty, the prosecution lawyer filed application for his remand in prison custody pending the advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

However, the defence counsel protested the application, saying the accused knew nothing about the crime.

Thereafter Magistrate M.O Tanimola summoned the police to give an account of what had transpired.

In his report to the court, Corporal Olumide said he was told to arraign the accused, adding that the investigation had shown that he was only a friend to the real suspect.

In his words, “My Lord, it was his friend that stabbed the deceased. The real offender is now at large. Alegbeleye was arraigned because we found him at the scene of the crime.

“The junior brother of the suspect had earlier been arrested, but the Ajah Police Division released him.”

When the Magistrate queried why the man was charged when he was not the suspect, Corporal Olumide said “The police authorities said I should charge him with murder. I told them that my investigation showed he was not part of it, but they insisted that I should charge him, and I didn’t know what to do,” he submitted.

Corporal Olumide said statements taken from the accused showed he had returned from his work and met the two men arguing over matters connected with cultism.

He said he then went out to take his bath and on returning, found the deceased in a pool of blood and with knife wounds. He said the police arrested him because he was a friend of the suspect.

The magistrate, in her ruling said since the accused was being punished for a crime he did not commit, there were no grounds for remand.

The good Magistrate thus struck out the case and set the man free, unconditionally.

From what .Com gathered, the Police headquarters in Abuja are yet to query all those involved in this monumental abuse of authority by a police Oga.

249  Forum / The Buzz Central / Landlord Chase This Lady With Cutlass For Denying Him Sex on: 5-07-2013 10:15 AM

At 37, Princess Izuchukwu Ajuobi, is a beautiful woman by all standards. Her beauty is such that attracts the attention of men, despite the fact that she’s a mother of two.

However, this beautiful lady is disabled in one leg and one hand. She was born with the deformity. Although Ajuobi is not bothered about her deformity, there’s one thing that takes away her happiness. It’s the fact that people take advantage of her condition to molest her...

One of such experiences is her raw deal with her landlord and his brother. She was molested and beaten blue and black. Her offence? She refused to have sex with the two men involved.

Narrating her ordeal to Daily Sun, Ajuobi said: “I had vowed to remain a virgin till the day I would marry, until a man strolled into my life, swearing by his life that I was the angel he was looking for. I fell for his tricks and he deflowered me in the name of marriage, only for him to throw me out, after having two boys for him. I decided to move ahead with life.

"As a single mother living with children, every one wants to have sex with me. It happens to all women. Even when you decline they will start looking for a way to harm you. It is worst when you are disabled, like me and you cannot fight for yourself. Men take advantage of your condition to do you wrong. That was my situation.”

On what happened in her case, she stated: “In April, 2011, I packed into an apartment I paid for in April, 2011. Three months after I moved in, my landlord’s brother, Uwahamaka, started approaching me for sex.

My landlord, who hails from Umuokpuru, Afarata, Ibeku, also made advances to me. Both of them would come at night or at odd hours during the day to knock at my door, asking me to open. They would boldly tell me that they wanted to sleep with me. “When my landlord’s brother is not around, my landlord would tell me not to mind him, stating that he was not responsible.

"The landlord would say that he was the one that would treat me well, asking me to befriend him. I looked at myself and said, is it because I am in this condition that a man, who is old enough to be my grand father, would be angling to sleep with me? My landlord is over 60 years.

"It is as a result of my refusing him and his brother sex that makes them angry.”

The harassment, the women stated: “My landlord would come knocking on my door, asking me to open for him, for us to have sex. I would always tell him that I don’t want to do anything with him. They want to make me a sex toy. My refusal infuriated them both and they vowed to deal with me.

"That was the beginning of my problem. One day, I was cooking for my children and Uwahamaka came and started abusing me, calling me names, for no reason. I refused to talk back at him. He accused me of splashing water on his door and started breaking my rubber containers. Before I could do anything, he threw away the rice I was cooking.

“He came after me with chain and cutlass, threatening to cut off my remaining leg. He started beating me, to the point of attempting to push me into the fire. He did hit my artificial leg with chain causing it to break. I crashed to the ground like a bag of sand, having lost control of my supporting leg.”

Ajuobi stated that she made a report to the police, leading to the arrest of the man. “The police arrested him, after which they mandated him to buy my artificial leg. He told the police that he would not pay, that the matter should be charged to court. It was after this that they started maltreating me in their yard. They started closing the gate at 7 p. m., just to frustrate me. My landlord said that if I don’t pack out of his house, he would make me blind and nothing will happen since his kinsman from Ibeku is the governor.

"He gave me quit notice, even when my rent is still running.

“I traveled to my village in Ikwuano to stay because they were always coming to my room to attack me. They usually beat me up and flog me mercilessly. One day, I told my brother how they were maltreating me and he went to them to ask them why. They threatened to deal with him. I have found an accommodation, but I have no money to pay. Now, they have driven me out of their house, while my rent has not expired.

“On April 16, I came back from the village, with one of my uncles, who was to travel to Lagos the following day. They started to molest me, as usual and eventually hit me with a stone on the hand that was deformed. We got to the house around 8.30 pm and they blocked my door, insisting that my uncle would not enter.

"They accused me of bringing my boyfriend and said I he would not sleep there. I must say that whenever any male visitor comes to my house, they would get angry. The vicious attack “When later I opened my door and entered, his daughter in-law, Ngozi, entered my room and started slapping me, in the presence of my uncle, just to cause a fight.

"My uncle asked her to stop, but she refused and then my landlord came into the room and asked my uncle who he was. My uncle told him that he was my brother and my landlord ordered him to leave and the time was about midnight. They putt off the lights and also beat my uncle. They pursued him out and closed the gate on him around midnight. They attacked me thereafter and I passed out.

“They took away my bag containing N200,000, which I was given at the village to pay for a house.

"When I regained consciousness, Uwahamaka again hit me with a stick. I passed out again, only to regain later. When I regained consciousness, I started shouting for help, but there was nobody to help me because they had closed the gate. In the morning, I took my kids to the police station and reported the matter a second time. “The police did nothing. I don’t know if they had thrown my things away. I am now homeless, hanging from place to place with my children.

"That is my predicament. I want the world to know. They say that there is nothing I can do to them. I am calling on the relevant authorities to come to my aid. I am a graduate of Accountancy and I need job to take care of my children, any type of job. Sometimes I feel that life has not been fair to me. This has even affected my children’s schooling because we don’t have a place of my own. I don’t have any money to hire a lawyer and they know this.”

In their statements of defence at the police Area Command, Umuahia, the landlord and his brother alleged that Ajuobi scaled the fence into their compound at an odd hour with her uncle and children, causing them to confront them.

However, a police source that pleaded anonymity told Daily Sun that the investigation they conducted revealed that Ajuobi could not have scaled any fence with her bad leg and hand, as alleged.

A medical report from Federal Medical Center, Umuahia, where Ajuobi was treated confirmed that she sustained injuries as a result of beatings she received.

250  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Pastor, wife talk dirty as court dissolves marriage on: 5-07-2013 10:03 AM

An Orile-Agege Customary Court in Lagos, yesterday, dissolved the 20-year-old marriage of a pastor, who had accused his wife of infidelity and threat to his life.

LAGOS —  An Orile-Agege Customary Court in Lagos, yesterday, dissolved the 20-year-old marriage of a pastor, who had accused his wife of infidelity and threat to his life.

Pastor Sunday Owonikoko,51, had filed a petition at the court on May 27, saying he could no longer continue with his wife, Bolajoko, 47.

Ruling in the case, court president, Mr Joseph Adewusi, said the marriage has broken down irretrievably.

His words: “Starting from today, you cease to be addressed as husband and wife; you shall go your separate ways and maintain the peace.

“The custody of the under-aged among the children is referred to Ikeja Family Court for final decision, but in the interim, the children should remain with the petitioner.

“The petitioner, Pastor Sunday Owonikoko, should pay a compensation fee of N25,000 to the defendant and also secure accommodation for her.”

My wife still  sees her ex

According to reports the pastor, who lives at 1, Alowole St., Papa Ashafa, Orile-Agege, had told the court that his wife was still seeing her ex-lovers.

“My wife once travelled to Ghana to meet one of her concubines. She did family planning without my consent and she goes out at will.

“She was suspended from the church for six months because she fought all ministers in the church. She then established her church, she fought all the members of the church, and they all left.”

The father of four children, aged between 19 years and 11 years, had also told the court that his wife threatened to destroy him and the church.

“I want the court to dissolve the union and grant me custody of my children,” he had said.

Bolajoko, an evangelist, had, however, denied the allegations in her response.

My husband is  adulterous

She said: “My husband is adulterous. He has slept with almost all the sisters in the church. A mother of seven is presently living with himand he has made the woman an evangelist.“

Bolajoko told the court that her husband had “lost his mind” since he ate vegetable soup in the house of one of the sisters in the church. I don’t love him anymore, I want a divorce.”

255  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Shocker- Police recover 20 human skulls at a dumpsite in Aba on: 4-07-2013 09:09 PM
A dumpsite has been discovered near Aba, Abia State, where over 20 human skulls and decomposing bodies, including those of school children were found. The site, which was a horror to behold was located, at about kilometre 15 on the Aba/Azumini Highway at an area called “No man’s land” after Akpaa village in Obingwa Local Government of the state.
The discovery followed the arrest of four policemen attached to the Federal Highway Patrol unit of the Nigeria Police, Aba Section, who allegedly killed a 26-year-old man in Aba.

The policemen led by their officer-in-charge, Hyginus Omeze, who were ordered to be detained by the Area Commander for Aba, Rabiu Dayi were alleged to have murdered one Onyekachi Chukwu, 26 and dumped his body at the site.

Daily Sun gathered that on Sunday June 23 Onyekachi, who hailed from Ahaba Imenyi in Isuikwuato Local Government and lived at No. 47 Ukaegbu Road, went out with his friends to drink in a hotel located on Ekenna Avenue. After spending the day, Onyekachi was said to have decided to pass the night in the house of one of his friends residing also in Ogbor hill.

According to a source, as he made to knock at the gate, the policemen came from nowhere and after beating him, got him arrested. The cops, who were said to have refused all pleas by people residing in the neighbourhood, arrested Onyekachi together with the gate man of the friend’s house and the caretaker and took them to a hotel on Opobo Road, Ogbor hill, which also served as their base.

On getting to the hotel, Daily Sun learnt the policemen left the other two men behind in the hotel and took Onyekachi out in their Toyota Prado SUV and drove towards Azumini. After about one hour, the policemen were said to have come back to the hotel without the young man.

On getting back to the hotel, the policemen took the men they earlier left behind and took them back to where they were earlier arrested and ordered the occupants of the house to wash their vehicle and contribute money for them to replace the bullets, which they claimed they had wasted and the people complied without knowing what the policemen did.

The bubble, however, busted when the relations of Onyekachi, after days of searching for him without success made formal complaint to the police, who swung into action immediately and traced their colleagues, who allegedly committed the dastardly acts to the hotel, where four of them were arrested.

According to Uchechi Chukwu, an elder brother to the deceased, who believed the young man was killed for rituals, going by the way his body was dismembered; it was through the effort of the area commander that the policemen were arrested.

Then the arrested policemen, who were said to have admitted to the crime, took their colleagues to the borrow-pit along the Aba/Azumini Highway, where they dumped the dismembered body of Onyekachi. When Daily Sun visited the borrow-pit at “no man’s land,” where Onyekachi’s body was buried in a shallow grave, the site was a horror to behold, as several human skulls and decomposing bodies, including that of school children.

Also found in the place included a piece of iron zinc which surroundings were splattered with blood and believed to been where Onyekachi was slaughtered and his vital organs removed, according to his relations.

There was equally a human organ believed to be a bladder left on the ground, where the slain man’s body was found and also hand gloves believed to have been worn by those who murdered the man. When contacted on phone, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abia Command, Geoffrey Ogbonna, while confirming the incident, denied that the young man was killed for ritual purposes.

256  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Female Corp Member Gets Crippled By NYSC Camp Commandant In Anambra State on: 4-07-2013 06:13 PM

In November 2012, Miss Mercy Okpithe reported to the Batch ‘C’ Orientation Camp of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Anambra State. Excited and looking forward to the opportunity to serve Nigeria for one year.

But little did Mercy know that four months later, fate would have no mercy on her.

Mercy, it was gathered, was severely beaten up by the Camp Commandant at the NYSC Orientation Camp, one Captain S.O. Beke, about 11:00p.m on Monday, March 18, this year.
She allegedly fainted and was rushed to the camp clinic.

The following day, she was transferred to the Anambra State University Teaching Hospital, Awka where she was diagnosed with dislocation of coccyx, a small triangular bone at the base of the spinal column.

The hospital further referred her to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, for special attention. It was gathered that she might be flown abroad for surgery.

But what could have led to the alleged brutalisation?

This correspondent visited Mercy in her Lagos home. As she lay down on a couch in their living room, the young lady writhed in pains, even as she struggled to answer the reporter’s questions.

Her words:
“When the Batch A corps members were in the Orientation Camp in March, this year, the NYSC officials invited members of the Dance Troupe to the camp to teach the new corps members how to dance. We got to the camp in the evening of Sunday, March 17.
We were 15 all together; 11 boys and four girls. We girls were not meant to stay together in the same room with the boys. But we had to because there was no vacant room. The following morning, the NYSC State Coordinator gave a directive that a separate room should be given to the girls. But the officials could not find a vacant room for us.
So, they put us in one of the rooms occupied by some Batch ‘A’ female corps members. “We took two mattresses each to the place. There were no bunks. So, we spread the mattresses on the ground. Thereafter, the other three girls slept but I was still awake. I was listening to music on my phone, using an earpiece.
Around 11:00p.m., some soldiers came into the room. They were both males and females. I felt it was a normal thing because they did the same thing when I was in the camp for orientation exercise in November 2012. Then, I noticed that a female soldier was arguing with one of my friends, Ifedayo Fakehinde.
Then, the female soldier forcefully removed one of the mattresses which she slept on. Ifedayo sought to know her offence and the soldier hit her. I quickly rose up and caught her as she was falling. Otherwise, she would have hit her head against the wall. But she sprained her hand.
The incident caused a scene. Many corps members came out and argued with the soldiers. As this was going on, Ifedayo was crying. We calmed her down.
Then, the NYSC Schedule Officer came around. He sought to know what happened. As I was explaining what I knew about the incident to him, I heard the voice of the Camp Commandant telling all the corps members to go inside. Before I finished my explanation, the commandant came and pushed me. I sought to know why he pushed me. But he pushed me again.
I told him to stop pushing me because he could not push his sister like that. But he continued until he pushed me to the wall. Then, he kicked me from the ground and I hit the ground with my back. I couldn’t move. Then, I heard other soldiers saying ‘die, die, die’ till I passed out.
As gathered, the Schedule Officer ran probably to call the State Coordinator, Mrs. I.B. Ekpe, when the commandant was purportedly beating the corps member.

But Mercy woke up at the camp clinic the following morning with excruciating pains.
Later that day, she was transferred to the Anambra State University Teaching Hospital, Awka.

Mr. Solomon Okpithe, Mercy’s father, said an official of the NYSC called him on phone in the afternoon of Tuesday, March 19, telling him that Mercy was involved in an accident and that he should come to Awka immediately.
The official, he disclosed, told him to come with somebody who would stay in the teaching hospital to take care of Mercy.

When he got to the hospital with his wife at about 12:30p.m the following day, they were shocked to hear that she was brutalised by the camp commandant.
Okpithe said the first thing that came to his mind was how to save his daughter’s life. He sought to see the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the teaching hospital but could not see him until about 7:00p.m when he came out from the theatre.

“I asked the CMD about my daughter’s condition, but he said the hospital could not handle it and he would refer her to Enugu. I told him that I was from Lagos and asked if he could refer her to any hospital in Lagos. Then, he said he would refer her to Igbobi. Immediately, he instructed the doctor that was in charge to write the letter.

“On Thursday morning, we were at Igbobi. The doctors at the hospital tried but the sad thing is that they told us they could not handle it too. They said it’s not just an orthopaedic case but something that has to do with the spine. They treated her and asked us to take her home. Then, they gave an appointment,” he said.

On the next appointment day, according to Okpithe, the hospital said the first option, which was the treatment by orthopaedic doctors, had failed.
“They said they were taking another option now and if it fails, the third option would be a surgery.”

Okpithe, who has since been responsible for his daughter’s hospital bills, disclosed that Mrs. Ekpe promised the family that NYSC would reinburse whatever amount spent on the treatment, adding that Ekpe said she had informed the national secretariat of NYSC in Abuja about the development and had also written a letter to the NYSC in Lagos State about the incident.

“I have received calls from one Mrs. Daniel from the NYSC Office, Lagos, telling me I should accept their sympathy on my daughter. But on the other hand, Mrs Ekpe never stated the cause of the dislocation. I know she’s doing that to protect the officer.” Okpithe, an engineer, urged the Chief of Army Staff to ensure proper reform of the army, especially those in charge of NYSC.

He also advised the Federal Government to provide necessary items for corps members on the camp. The issue of inadequate mattresses, he said, caused the problem. When contacted on phone to react to the claims, Captain Beke neither confirmed nor denied the incident.

He only asked if the story would be published in Daily Sun, and when the reporter answered in the affirmative, the officer paused and said he would call back. But he never did. Further efforts to reach him failed as the phone was switched off.

When the reporter was eventually through to him, Captain Beke directed the correspondent to contact NYSC for any comment. “I am not NYSC,” he asserted.
