The slaughter that shames Tony Blair: Outcry from all sides over former prime minister's 'Crusader' call for a new blitz on Iraq as the country descends into a bloodbath
•   Tony Blair said current chaos in Iraq could have been avoided
•   The former PM suggested the West should have bombed Syria
•   Blair said it was 'bizarre' that Iraq War was blamed for violence
•   Also suggested inaction could lead to a terror attack in the UK
•   But his comments prompt avalanche of criticism from Left and Right
•   Former minister Clare Short said he was 'wrong, wrong, wrong'
•   Pictures have emerged showing the mass execution of government soldiers
Iraq descended to new depths of savagery yesterday – as Tony Blair washed his hands of all blame for the bloodshed.
With Islamist jihadists now in control of large areas of the country, appalling pictures emerged showing the mass execution of government soldiers by masked fanatics.
Dozens of terrified men in civilian clothes lie in a shallow ditch before being executed in cold blood by Islamist extremists.
The Iraqi Army deserters, some wearing football shirts, were taken to scrubland where they faced a firing squad of Al Qaeda-inspired insurgents.
But, to derision from Left and Right, Mr Blair insisted that the sectarian violence tearing the country apart had nothing to do with his own actions in supporting the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

2  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Eight-foot python dislocates jaws to scoff young impala whole on: 16-01-2014 07:39 PM

While many of Africa's big predators could be expected to take down an antelope - few could then swallow it whole.
But this is just what happens when the killer turns out to be an African rock python.
These photographs show an 8ft snake devouring a young impala in the Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana.
Big mouth: An African rock python dislocates its jaws to gobble up a young impala in Moremi National Park
Food baby: The snake's belly bulges from its massive meal in these pictures taken by a Dutch photographer
Constrictor: Pythons kill by wrapping their bodies around their prey and squeezing them until they suffocate
Crushed: The legs of the hapless impala stick out as the python slowly eats it up Savage: This picture shows just how wide the snake's jaws had to open to swallow its massive meal
'Once-in-a-lifetime sighting': The images were captured by photographer Fred von Winckelmann, from Eindhoven in the Netherlands, whilst on a game drive at Moremi National Park in Botswana 'Preoccupied: The snake was so caught up in its meal that Mr Winckelmann was able to lie on his belly almost next to the beast to photograph it on its own level
The images were captured by photographer Fred von Winckelmann, from Eindhoven in the Netherlands, whilst on a game drive.
He said: 'Seeing an African rock python swallowing a young impala is a once-in-a-lifetime sighting.'
He added: 'The snake was calmly swallowing his meal without giving us any attention, so I was allowed to go belly-down to get eye-level photos of the reptile.
'We arrived when the snake was starting to dislocate its jaws around the antelope's waist and in 45 minutes it swallowed the last hooves.
'That was when we let the python digest it in peace because they are so vulnerable when doing so.'
Down the hatch: The impala's back legs disappear down the python's gaping jaws and into its belly
Savour the flavour: Mr Winckelmann said that it took the snake about 45 minutes to swallow its meal
Powerful: While there are many predators in Africa able to bring down an impala, few could swallow it whole
Stretchy: Pythons are able to swallow such large prey thanks to dislocatable jaws rigged with tendons, muscles and ligaments that can stretch to extraordinary lengths

He's single and he's looking for love.
But, to win his heart, you'd have to accept his rather unconventional lifestyle.
Amou Haji has not washed for 60 years, because he believes being clean will make him sick, and his favourite food is rotten porcupine.
Smoking hot: The man who hasn't bathed for 60 years, Amou Haji, pictured here smoking his pipe
To relax he likes to sit down and have a smoke, from a pipe packed with animal faeces.
Mr Haji, 80, says he chose this way of life after going through some emotional setbacks in his youth and since then - perhaps unsurprisingly - he has become a bit isolated.
His home is in Dejgah village in the southern province of Fars in Iran where, once, a group of young men offered to give him a shower - but luckily he managed to escape.
At night he either sleeps in a hole in the ground, which is quite like a grave, or in an open brick shack which concerned locals built for him.
World' dirtiest man has not washed for 60 years
Young, single, looking for love? But Mr Haji also believes being clean will make him sick
Nice aroma: Mr Haji's smoking pipe is filled with animal faeces instead of tobacco
Amou amour: Mr Haj's home is in Dejgah village in the southern province of Fars in Iran where, once, a group of young men offered to give him a shower - but he managed to escape
As well as cleanliness, Mr Haji also has an aversion to clean food and drink. He much prefers the rotten meat of dead animals and five litres of water a day from a rusty oil can.
But don't think Mr Haji doesn't look after himself - when he wants to look his best he uses car mirrors for grooming, The Tehran Times reported.
And, when he needs a haircut, he simply burns his locks in a fire.
As for clothing, he wears rags and, in the winter, a war helmet to ward off the cold .
The last record of longest time going without showers belonged to a 66-year-old Indian man, Kailash Singh, who had not taken a bath over 38 years.
Mr Haji claims to have beaten that.

5  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Breaking news: Fire Guts Great Nigeria House on: 4-11-2013 04:45 PM
Fire guts 22-storey Great Nigeria House in Lagos Hundreds of tenants and traders wept on Monday as fire engulfed the Great Nigeria House along Martins Street on Lagos Island, western Nigeria, which served as their offices and warehouses.
The fire paralysedf commercial activities in the Balogun area of Lagos Island.
Many of the traders were seen scrambling to salvage few of their goods from the burning building.
The 22-storey Great Nigeria House, acclaimed as the fifth tallest building in Nigeria, accommodates Mainstreet Bank and also serves as warehouses to some traders.

•Great Nigeria House on fire this morning in Lagos.

Great Nigeria Building was on fire early this morning. Pic Shows tick smoke bellowing out from the building. While men of the fire services are battling to save the building.
A witness said the fire started at about 5 a.m. and was first noticed on the first floor.
He disclosed that as at 10.30 a.m., the fire had taken over the first four floors.
Fire service officials, men of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, police, health officials and others were at the scene battling to put it out.
As at 11 a.m., the firemen were able to contain the fire and also prevented it from spreading to other floors and shopping plazas around the skyscraper.
Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Rasak Fadipe, told P.M.NEWS that the fire service received a distress call around 6.34 a.m. that the building was on fire.
He disclosed that the fire trunks at Onikan Fire Station, with 10,000 litres of water were mobilised to the scene. On getting there, his men discovered that the fire was of great magnitude and that there was no way the 10,000 litres of water could quell the fire.
“We had to call for reinforcement from the Sari-Iganmu Fire Station which brought another 10,000 litres of water to fight the fire,” he said.
Fadipe added that the fire men also brought aerial ladders used in fighting fire in highrise buildings to the scene to gain access to the affected floors.
He identified crowd control as one of the challenges his men faced when they arrived the scene, adding that some social miscreants also called ‘area boys’ tried to snatch the fire equipment from his men.
He said his men had to tackle the crowd before they could gain access to the building and that the policemen on ground helped in cordoning off the area.
According to him, the thick smoke billowing from the building also posed a challenge to his men but that they had to use a breathing aparatus to gain entrance into the building.
He said  the cause of the fire could not be ascertained.
Fadipe also confirmed that the Federal Fire Service and that of the United Bank for Africa, UBA, complemented the effort of the state firemen.
Spokesperson, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA,

6  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / A monster's memoirs: Never seen before, the self-pitying jail journal of Myra Hi on: 26-10-2013 07:12 PM
On her first night behind bars, Myra Hindley confessed to feeling guilt.

Not for the children’s lives she had snuffed out – but for having a ‘disloyal’ dream about her lover and partner in crime Ian Brady trying to strangle her.

The Moors murderer’s warped emotions are laid bare from beyond the grave at the start of an unpublished autobiography that drips with self-pity and shows no respect for the suffering of her victims or their grieving relatives.
Evil: Murderer Myra Hindley pictured in prison in the 1980s where she attempted to write an autobiography

‘The sheets were cold and smelling of the laundry, and I tried to fall asleep, but awakened later after having a nightmare which frightened me but filled me with guilt,’ she wrote.

‘I dreamed Ian was trying to strangle me, and I felt terrible, full of guilt for dreaming such a disloyal thing, and I lay there for hours, confused, frightened, and apprehensive.’

The first person account of Hindley’s entry into the prison system after her arrest was intended to be the start of an autobiography.

She posted the first four pages, but they were intercepted by the prison authorities and later stored in the National Archives.

Today, with her official files no longer classified as secret, it can be read publicly for the first time.

No thought for her victims: An extract from the memoir Myra Hindley wrote in prison
In it the woman who was responsible for the shocking murders of five children in the 1960s tells how within a few hours of being booked into Risley Remand Centre in Cheshire on October 11, 1965, she was pining for ‘my boyfriend’ Brady.

When a woman prison orderly asked her if there was anything she wanted to know, Hindley ‘couldn’t think of anything except where my boyfriend was.
She said he’d be over in the male prison and I could ask the Governor in the morning if I could have visits from him.’

She also complains about the indignities of prison life as she perceives them, all the time without a thought for the misery she had caused or any acknowledgement that she deserved to be punished.

Hindley felt ‘annoyed and embarrassed’ about the ‘invasion of privacy’ of being inspected for lice, she wrote, and refused to use a chamber pot because ‘I was determined from the start that I’d cling on to that much of my dignity’.

Hindley and Brady pose for a picture on the moor where they buried their child victims
It took 22 years before she put pen to paper to describe these events in her new role as an author. Handwritten by Hindley – complete with meticulous corrections initialled ‘MH’ – on pages torn from an exercise book, the account was titled ‘Risley – Remand’. Believing it would one day be published, she even copyrighted the pages.

Describing her first admission to prison Hindley, who died in jail in 2002 aged 60, wrote: ‘I think I was in a state of shock where things don’t register properly.
‘I know I felt relieved that the uncertainty was over and that I wouldn’t have to be a burden on my mother and stepfather-to-be, or my uncle and aunt.’
She was taken to her cell by a female officer who told her: ‘It’s quite bare but it’s warm and the bed is clean.’
'I told them I hadn't got any religion'
Hindley asked where the toilet was and was horrified when the warder pointed to a chamber pot under the bed. ‘I said, “My mother weaned me off that when I was a baby and I’m not using one of those at my age”.’

She ‘suffered agonies’ training her body to wait to use the toilet at 8am. It was more than 17 years – after being transferred to Cookham Wood – before she was given a cell with a toilet.

She and Brady travelled to the remand centre in separate cars after appearing in court. Hindley was ordered to undress by what she called the ‘impersonally kind’ reception staff and described the tiny changing cubicle.
‘We called them horse boxes. But a horse would never had fitted into that tiny space. I undressed and handed my clothes out, putting on the huge nightdress and prison dressing gown given to me, and a pair of old slippers.’

Asked her religion, ‘I told them – and it was the first time I’d acknowledged this, not without a thrill of fear – that I hadn’t got any religion. They put me down as C of E on my card, which was changed at Holloway to N/R – no religion.’

Trial: Myra Hindley and Ian Brady are seen leaving court in a police van after being sentenced with the Moors Murders

Hindley told how she had felt guilty for having a 'disloyal' dream about her lover and partner in crime Ian Brady trying to strangle her
Hindley was also stunned to be asked if she had false teeth. ‘I thought they were joking but they said some people weren’t above swapping teeth for cigarette ends,’ she wrote.
Dr Tom Clark, a Sheffield University academic who is writing a book about Hindley’s life behind bars, found the lost chapter in the National Archives.
He said: ‘Overall, it’s a dispassionate and quite detailed account which shows a remarkable memory. But it completely ignores the gravity of what has happened to her.’
A second chapter about her years in Holloway seems likely to remain secret as it names officers and could be defamatory, said Dr Clark. Prison records also suggest a third, and as yet undiscovered, chapter may have been written too.
Brady, now 75, is currently held in a psychiatric hospital.

Caught on camera: Moment police raided a sham marriage between Portuguese bride and Nigerian groom who knew nothing about one another
These pictures show police officers interrupting a sham wedding between a Nigerian man living illegally in the UK and a Portuguese woman.
Home Office immigration officers swooped on the ceremony, which was held at a registry office in Harrow, North London.
The man, 32, has now been sent back to Nigeria, and the woman, 22, is on bail until November 7.

Police swoop on a North London sham marriage
Broadcast on Sky News this morning, immigration officers said the woman may have married for cash on three separate occasions.
Police interrupted the marriage in front of guests and took the bride and groom for questioning separately.
It emerged that they knew little about each other and that the man was working in the UK illegally.
Harrow Council leader Susan Hall said: 'It is appalling to see the lengths some people go to in dressing up and organising guests for a sham marriage.
'A marriage is supposed to be the happiest day in your life. Well, in this case, the couple certainly got a day they won’t forget.'
Immigration officers question the Nigerian man, 32, after interrupting his sham marriage ceremony
According to police, the 22-year-old woman may have married for cash on three separate occasions
Questioning by police revealed the couple knew little about each other and that the man was in the illegally
The photographs and footage come after it emerged yesterday that one in five civil marriages in parts of Britain may be bogus.
Some 15,000 such ceremonies a year are taking place simply to get around immigration law, estimates one of the country’s most senior registrars, Mark Rimmer.
Last year the Home Office received nearly 1,900 warnings about potentially bogus unions.
But Mr Rimmer, the chairman of the Local Registration Services Association, said that figure represented ‘the tip of a very large iceberg’. He said that in urban areas, up to 20 per cent of marriages are ‘suspicious’.
He estimated that overall, 15,000 of the 173,000 civil weddings each year in England and Wales could be fake unions designed to evade immigration laws.
Registrars were powerless to prevent couples they suspected of faking their relationships from marrying and were forced to conduct the ceremonies ‘through gritted teeth’, he said.

Mark Rimmer, chairman of the Local Registration Services Association, said official figures are the 'tip of a very large iceberg'
Mr Rimmer said the problem was worse than at its high point in 2004 because laws drawn up since then to deal with the problem had been watered down by a series of human rights judgments to the point where they were ‘meaningless’.
Last week ministers announced a major crackdown on sham weddings, with laws designed to ensure every potential sham wedding is reported and investigated before it happens. It also gives officials more power to delay the ceremony taking place by up to 70 days.
Official figures show that the number of reported cases has tripled in the last three years. In 2009 some 561 reports were lodged with officials, a figure which nearly doubled in a year to 934 in 2010. By 2011 it stood at 1,741 and last year 1,891.
Home Office officials admit that the figure is likely to severely underestimate the scale of the problem. They put the likely number of sham weddings at between four and ten thousand a year. But Mr Rimmer says the problem is even worse than that.
He claims only the most blatant cases are flagged up and ‘borderline’ weddings which are slightly suspicious go unreported.
‘We have seen huge increases in potential sham marriages presenting themselves to us, we now have more reports from registrars going to the Home Office, but I think that is the tip of a very large iceberg, and effectively the real scale of the problem is far greater than that reported to the Home Office officially,’ he told a Sky News investigation.
‘Most registration officers are not immigration officers, they came into this business to facilitate marriage.
Immigration Minister Mark Harper said extending the notice period for marriages there will be more time to investigate and prosecute those involved in sham marriages
‘So therefore they don’t want to be cynical, unfortunately therefore what happens is, the ones that are absolutely blatant get reported and there are some that are borderline that slip through without being reported – and that is the iceberg under the water and that’s huge – it is absolutely huge.
‘In an area like anywhere in  London it is multiple times per week. It would not be unreasonable to say that 20 per cent of all our marriages are suspicious, have some elements of suspicion about them. Very often the ceremony is done through  gritted teeth.’
Sham weddings became a major problem in the early 2000s and Labour passed a law in 2004 requiring couples including one foreign national to get an approval certificate from the Home Office before they could wed.
But this was watered down by a series of legal judgments on challenges under Article 8 of the Human Rights Act. As a result, Mr Rimmer said, the law became ‘meaningless’.
Ministers say new measures announced will provide registrars better powers to deal with sham weddings. When the Immigration Bill becomes law, every proposed marriage in which a non-EU national will gain rights to be in Britain will be reported to the Home Office.
THE SHAM BRIDE PAID £1,300: PORTUGUESE WOMAN JAILED FOR PLOT
Salome Almeida, 22, has been jailed for 12 months for plotting a sham wedding
A Pakistani student and a Portuguese woman were sent to prison for 12 months after they were found guilty of plotting a sham wedding so he could remain in the UK.
Salome Almeida, 22, admitted to police that she had agreed to marry Wahab Khalid, 23, for £1,340.
Almeida arrived in the UK a few weeks before the wedding was  due to take place and visited a register office with Khalid to give notice to marry.
Despite only being in the UK for 24 hours, she opened a bank account and received a national insurance number.
The pair were arrested in April this year at a register office in Harrow, north London, and confessed to conspiracy to facilitate a breach of immigration rules.
The notice period for marriages and civil partnerships will be increased from 15 days to 28 days for all couples, and officials will be able to increase that to 70 days in suspicious cases.
Foreign nationals from outside the EU wanting to get married in a church will first have to go to the register office and get approval – ensuring the authorities are made aware of the planned wedding.
Immigration Minister Mark Harper said: ‘Sham marriages have for too long been an easy target for migrants seeking to circumvent our immigration rules, often assisted by organised criminals.
‘By extending the marriage and civil partnership notice period to 28 days and allowing this to be increased to 70 days in some circumstances, we will make time to investigate, prosecute and remove those involved in sham marriages.’

Google tries to save the world: Internet giant explains how its move into quantum computing could solve global warming
Not content with being the largest search engine in the world, designing the most popular mobile operating system, creating a healthcare company and helping to develop lab-grown meat, Google has now explained how it plans to solve societies biggest problems - through quantum computing.
Earlier this year Google bought a quantum computer called D-Wave Two, which can perform tasks 3,600 times faster than normal computers.
The company is hoping to use it to find cures for diseases, fix climate problems and help robots better understand human speech, for example.
In the first of a series of videos explaining a bit more about this computer and the company's work with quantum computing, Google has teamed up with Nasa to explain the basics behind the D-Wave and why it is so important
Google bought the quantum computer, pictured, earlier this year. It is 3,600 faster than normal computers and could be used to tackle disease, climate change, and develop more sophisticated robots. Google has created a video explaining the basics behind the computer and the company's quantum project
Google explains the theory behind quantum computing
WHAT IS QUANTUM COMPUTING?
Modern day computers run on a model designed by Alan Turing in the 1930s.
They are digital and use bits to transfer information and perform tasks.
They use binary code and can only ever been in an active, or an inactive state - running at one or zero.
This means that a single bit is either on or off at any one time.
Qubits work differently and can be on, off, or in a mixed state in between.
As a result, qubits are able to be in multiple places at the same time.
Whereas the original Turing computer can only make one calculation at a time, quantum computers are capable of performing single tasks faster, and performing multiple tasks more effectively.
Tasks that would take normal computers years to complete can be processed in seconds using quantum computers like the D-Wave.
The company is hoping to unlock the power of the computer, which was built by Canadian company D-Wave, at the new Quantum Artificial Intelligence Lab, housed at Nasa's Ames Research Centre in California.
The video begins by explaining that: 'Quantum physics puts everything into question; it defies every intuition that you have about the natural world. Quantum is a very strange regime of physics.'
It goes on to explain objects can exist in a state of superposition - in which they can be one thing and another at the same time.
It then moves onto quantum entanglement, quantum tunneling and the multi-verse, in which there are infinite numbers of other universes running parallel to ours.
A Google spokesman called Hartmut continues by explaining quantum computing uses these ideas behind quantum physics to process and calculate data at much faster speeds.
D-Wave computers run on a 128-qubit processor. Normal computers are digital and use bits to transfer information and perform tasks.
As a comparison, PCs found in homes run on 32-bit or 64-bit processors.
The 'bits' in modern-day computers can only ever been in an active, or an inactive state; running at one or zero. This means a single 'bit' is either on or off at any one time and they can only perform calculations individually.

Tasks that take normal computers years to complete can be processed in seconds by quantum computers, pictured. This, Google explains in the video, makes quantum computers more capable of solving 'optimisation problems' and gaining useful insights from data
Qubits work differently and can be on, off, or in a mixed state in between. As a result, qubits are able to be in multiple places at the same time and this means they are capable of performing single tasks faster, and performing multiple tasks more effectively.
Tasks that would take normal computers years to complete can be processed in seconds using quantum computers like the D-Wave.The D-Wave works closer to how the human brain works, but without the margin of human error.
This, Hartmut explains, makes quantum computers, and the D-Wave specifically, more capable of solving what's called 'optimisation problems.'
An example of a basic-level optimisation problem explained in the video is if someone wants to travel across South America, visiting 20 cities.

A D-Wave 128-qubit processing chip. Unlike 'bits' found in normal computers that can only be on or off at any one time, qubits can also be in a 'mixed state' between these points
Google's video also explains the basics behind the multi-verse, in which there are infinite numbers of other universes running parallel to ours with different variations of the same people
This creates a huge number of variables, such as which order to visit the cities in, travel times, ticket prices, airlines, seat choices, routes, hotels, weather, attractions, events and so on.
Normal computers could solve this problem eventually, but quantum computers are better equipped to solve it quickly.
This becomes even more important as the variables and complexities increase, and Google is hoping to use the technology to develop cures for diseases, tackle the effects of climate change, better develop voice-activated technology and more.
'In human civilisation we generate vast amounts of data,' explains the video voiceover, including data on climate, genetics, 'but it's very difficult to generate useful insights from that data.'
Google adds that quantum computers makes humans 'consider more sophisticated notions of how the reality around us is actually shaped.'
'We can't ask it how long we'll live, or the meaning of life. Really we don't know what the best questions to ask this computer are and that's exactly what we're trying to understand now.'

Google could use the D-Wave quantum computer to further develop the technology in its self-driving cars. This is the view the cars currently see. Future designs, created using the quantum computer, could better navigate the roads and react to obstacles in a more similar way to how human brains can
The D-Wave quantum computer could be used to help robots understand human speech and lead to more sophisticated robotic designs, like the Terminator in the classic sci-fi film
The video adds: 'The greatest question is 'are we alone?' and we believe as quantum computers mature, they're going to help us answer that question.'
The D-Wave One was first announced in May 2011 by the company based in Burnaby, British Colombia.
It was developed with financial backing from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
D-Wave One was bought by defence group Lockheed Martin in 2011 as part of a multi-year contract in a bid to try and solve some of its more challenging computational problems.
In August last year, a team of Harvard University researchers were able to use the D-Wave One to solve the largest protein folding problem ever, using the quantum computer.
Protein folding is a complex system found in all living things involving amino acids.
Google in particular could use the technology to improve the reaction times and processing speeds of its self-driving cars, or develop its Google Glass technology - a wearable computer that responds to motion and voice controls.
To unlock this power, and test the computer's potential, the two organisations have launched the Quantum Artifical Intelligence Lab at Nasa's Ames Research Centre based in California.
D-Wave is also working on a Vesuvius quantum computer that will run on a 512-qubit processor.

9  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Prices Of Ram Soar In Lagos. on: 14-10-2013 04:37 PM

•Rams for sale in Lagos

Survey from some ram markets across Lagos metropolis this morning  have shown that  prices of rams have soared beyond the reach of many Muslims barely 24 hours to Eid-El-Kabir celebrations.

P.M.NEWS market survey indicated that the price of ram has gone up between 80- 100 per cent in most ram markets in the metropolis.

Ram markets visited by our correspondent include: Oko-Oba, Abattoir, Agege, Moshalashi at Iyana-Ipaja, Mangoro cattle market, Meiran and Alaba Rago in Ojo Local Government.

Consumers in these markets were seen complaining about what they considered as unjustified price hike of ram by dealers.

They lamented that they had thought the price would be more affordable almost a day to Sallah.

The smallest ram in these markets goes for N45,000, as against N30,000 during the same period last year, while a big ram is sold for as much as N180,000 and N200,000.

During our visit to these markets, sellers and buyers were seen haggling over the prices and unable to reach a compromise, while some who could afford them, paid and took the rams away.

A buyer at Mangoro cattle market, Akobi Gafar, said: “ I thought I could get a ram at a reasonable price being a day  to sallah  but the prices are high; that is why I have to haggle for a good price.

“Besides, it is not compulsory that every Muslim faithful must slaughter a ram, but only if you feel blessed and want to extend the goodwill to those who are less-privileged,” he said.

Another buyer at Moshalasi, Raji Rasheed, told P.M.NEWS that he had visited many ram markets but couldn’t buy any because of the high cost, adding that the price of a ram this year is high.

“Many buyers cannot buy and they go home disappointed. I am appealing to the government to look into the problem or else many  Muslims will not be able to slaughter rams during this Eid-el-Kabir,” he said.

A buyer at Meiran, Poopola Kazeem lamented that he ought to have bought his own ram some months ago to beat the present high cost but was financially incapacitated due to some unforeseen circumstances.

The majority of the dealers who spoke with our correspondent, stated that the major routes traders used to bring rams to the state had become impassable due to the activities of Boko Haram.

Some of the dealers also blamed the exhorbitant price to insecurity, which has not allowed businessmen to bring rams from neighbouring countries like the Republic of Niger and Chad.

However, the situation was a bit better at Alaba Rago, in Ojo Local Government Area of the state. Roadside ram sellers in the area have crashed the prices of their rams, fearing that if they do not sell them between today and tomorrow morning, officials of the state government might capitalise on that and arrest them for selling by the roadside and on the road median.

Most of the ram traders who spoke with our correspondent complained of poor patronage, a situation which has equally forced a drop in the prices of rams in the area.

A ram that cost N60, 000 last week, now sells for between N45,000 and N50,000 while those that were earlier sold for N45,000 attracted N35,000.

The survey also indicated a drop in the price of small rams, from N20, 000, to N15,500.

A ram dealer in the market, Yusuff Madaki, complained of poor sales.

Another dealer, Sanni Gambo lamented the high cost of rams from Niger Republic where they purchased them, adding that they have been recording poor sales.

Meanwhile, many residents of Lagos State were this morning stranded at various bus stops as commuter bus drivers doubled transport fares ahead of the Sallah celebrations.

P.M.NEWS also noted that there were few vehicles at the bus stops with many of the drivers expressing frustrations.

Where the vehicles were available, the fare doubled by at least 150 percent. For instance, A trip from the old Toll Gate on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway to Agege area of the state that hitherto cost between N120 and N150 was increased to between N250 and N300.

From the Toll Gate to Abule-Egba, the fare was increased from between N80 and N100 to between N150 and N200. Some bus drivers also raised their fares to between N300 and N400 from the Toll Gate to Oshodi instead of the N150 and N200 that they charged on a normal day.

Also, a trip from Abule-Egba to Agege that attracted N50 before the sallah frenzy, now attracts N100.

The situation was the same from Ikeja to Yaba and Ojuelegba as bus drivers hiked their fares from N150 to about N350.

P.M. NEWS also noted that the fare from Iyana-Iba to Iyana-Ipaja rose this morning from N150 to N350.

From Iyana-Ipaja to Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, commuters that paid between N500 and N600, had to pay N1,000 this morning with the drivers disclosing that the passengers may pay three times the amount during the evening rush period.

Though officials of the state Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, were seen in major areas of the state, their presence only had a minimal effect on vehicular movements as therevehicles stood still on many of the roads.

Those who spoke with P.M.NEWS concerning the traffic challenge linked it to the frenzy surrounding the Sallah celebration.

“We do witness traffic problems once in a while on our roads, but it has been a major problem since late last week because of the Sallah celebration.

“Many residents are in a rush to get all that they need for the celebration. That is why you see a lot of people everywhere,” Musbau Tijani, a commuter bus driver told.

10  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Woman, 55, left clinging for her life 22 feet in the air. on: 13-10-2013 06:27 PM

A woman in Fort Lauderdale, Florida got stuck on a railroad bridge today, and had to be rescued by local firefighters.
The 55-year-old Dania Beach woman was crossing the New River using a railroad bridge, when the bridge unexpectedly started to lift up.
As the bridge started to rise, the woman held on to the sides of the two tracks to remain aloft.
Between two tracks: A 55-year-old woman got stuck on a railroad bridge in Fort Lauderdale, Florida this morning when it started to rise
Safe now: When firefighters arrived, they deployed a 24-foot ladder to rescue the woman who was about 22 feet in the air. A city official says she was uninjured
Several witnesses were at the scene and called for emergency help. The bystanders also whipped out their phones to take a picture of the rare sight. The woman was wearing all pink and later told police that she had participated in a Bosom  cancer walk earlier that morning at nearby Huizenga Plaza.
'She was just in this Jesus Chris position,' witness Phillip Glazebrook told the Sun-Sentinel. 'The woman was frozen and terrified. I'm sure she must have been in absolute shock to be stuck in that position.'
Mr Glazebrook wasn't surprised that the crowd took out their phones to document the incident.

'It was like watching an accident on 1-95, rubbernecking,' he said. 'She's stuck up there and they're just taking photos and videos.'
A Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue crew responded at 10:44am and they were able to safely rescue her.
Firefighters used a 24-foot ladder to rescue the woman, who was approximately 22 feet in the air.
Witnesses said it took about 20 minutes for crews to get her safely down.
'To tell you the truth, honestly I thought it was probably like a stunt or something, it was just that unbelievable,' witness Ashanicka Powell told NBC Miami. 'I really didn't think she honestly was trapped up there at first.'
'They harnessed the ladder up against the actual tracks and a firefighter went and got her and we were all clapping, we were just amazed' Ms Powell said.
River crossings: Above, the railroad bridge where the woman got stuck is circled in red (coincidentally raised). To the left of the railroad crossing, a nearby pedestrian crossing is visible
It is still unknown why the woman was crossing the railroad bridge, instead of using the nearby Andrews Avenue pedestrian crossing.
Mr Glazebrook hypothesizes that she might have walked out onto the bridge to take a picture.
While the woman was frightened, a city official says she was uninjured.
Others have not been so lucky on the bridge. In December 2010 two Lynn University soccer players were crossing the bridge on their way to a party when it started to lift.
21-year-old Kyle Conrad fell into the water and was later pronounced dead. His teammate Joe Cundall, also 21, clung to the bridge's trestle but his ankles and back were injured.

11  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / The North Carolina woman who lived inside an iron lung for 61 YEARS on: 9-10-2013 06:12 PM
An American woman spent 61 years of her life living in an iron tube that breathed for her after polio left her paralysed.
Martha Mason lay immobile in the tube  - dubbed the iron lung - that worked as a type of ventilator, increasing and decreasing the air pressure to expand and contract her lungs because her own muscles were too weak.
She lay horizontal the 7-foot-long, 800-pound iron cylinder that encased all but her head.
Martha Mason spent 61 years of her life living in an iron tube that breathed for her after polio left her paralysed. (She is pictured with professor and documentary filmmaker Mary Dalton, from Wake Forest University)
Martha Mason lay immobile in the tube - dubbed the iron lung - that worked as a type of ventilator, increasing and decreasing the air pressure to expand and contract her lungs because her own muscles were too weak
Ms Mason had had become paralysed at just 11 years old after suffering polio – very shortly after the disease had killed her brother Gaston, Oddity Central reports.
After her brother had been buried, it is said that she realised that she too had the symptoms but kept her fears to herself to avoid upsetting her parents.
The Final Inch: Martha Mason spent over 60 Years in an Iron Lung
In a book she wrote,  “Breath: Life in the Rhythm of an Iron Lung (thanks to the introduction of voice recognition software), she said: ‘I knew that I had polio. I didn’t want anyone else to know.
‘The day before I had heard Mother talking to a friend about the iron lung Gaston had been in. I knew I wouldn’t have that difficulty because I had excellent lungs.
In a video recorded before her death in 2009, Ms Mason said: '‘I often wonder in retrospect how my parents felt when I became ill – they just buried their only son [when this happened to me].
Martha had just lost her brother Gaston (right) to polio when she too contracted the disease. It left her paralysed at the age of 11
Martha with her mother. After she survived polio, doctors said she would only live a year and sent her home
‘It was assumed by people in general and me too that both of my parents would outlive me. Doctors said I would live a year, at most, but here I am a long time later [thanks to the iron lung].
Those who have written about her life say her curiosity and desire to live as normal life as possible were the key to her longevity.
Despite her being in a situation most people would consider horrific, Ms Mason, who was born in 1937 and lived in Lattimore, North Carolina, graduated from high school with the highest hours and hosted dinner parties.
In the video, she said:  ‘It [living like this] has become such a normal thing for me – I don’t even think about it – I really never give it a lot of thought.
Martha refused to be defined by her fate and went on to achieve first-class honours in high school. She later achieved her lifetime ambition of writing a book thanks to voice recognition software
Ginger Justice, Ms Mason's carer, brushing her hair. She cared for her for 25 years before her death in 2009. Ms Mason lay horizontal the 7-foot-long, 800-pound iron cylinder that encased all but her head
The machine takes over from my diaphragm like a big bag of air. ‘There are other methods of ventilation , but I have chosen not to do that.’
Despite being permanently horizontal, she chose to remain in the machine, as she says it gave her freedom.
The iron lung let her breathe without tubes or incisions in her throat, or the need for hospital stays.
It also let her remain at home, living with the help of two aides.
Even when her mother’s health deteriorated in the years before her own death, Ms Mason insisted she stayed at home, and ran the household from the iron lung.
Speaking before her death, Ms Mason said: 'Living like this has become such a normal thing for me - I don¿t even think about it - I really never give it a lot of thought'
Paying tribute to her friend after her death, Mary Dalton said:  'She lived in this life-saving machine longer than anyone else in the world.
'At first the image and sound of the iron lung were distracting if not shocking, but soon after talking with Martha, the massive, metal cylinder became inconsequential because it was so greatly exceeded by her spirit.
'She told me that she survived for so many years – while so many others with the same disease died – because of the exceptional care she received from her parents and community, and because she has always been driven to learn.'

12  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Breaking news: Plane Carrying Agagu’s Corpse Crashes In Lagos. on: 3-10-2013 03:12 PM
An Associated Airlines plane conveying the corpse of the late former governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Agagu, crashed on Thursday morning, killing at least 15 people, just minutes after taking off at the Murtala Muhammed International in Lagos, southwestern Nigeria, aviation authorities said.

•The wreckage of the plane that crashed this morning in Lagos
The plane was heading for Akure, the Ondo State capital in western Nigeria. Among the dead are the late former governor’s two children.

Agagu was former Minister of Aviation under President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration.
Also dead is Ondo State Commissioner for Tourism, Deji Falae. Though the plane caught fire and was burnt, the casket bearing the remains of Agagu was not burnt.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, said in a statement that five persons survived the crash which occurred at 9.32 a.m.
The propeller aircraft marked 5N-BJY crashed with 20 passengers on board, authorities said. It was not clear if that figure included crew members.

Children as young as five were shot up to five times by the terrorists that carried out the Westgate mall massacre, it has emerged.
The attack, carried out last week by gunmen from Somalia-based terrorist group Al Shabaab, left 67 people dead, including six Britons.
New accounts of the extremists' merciless assault reveal for the first time the fate of some of the 30 children who attended a cooking event at the mall. Some of them were as young as 12.
Response team: A grab from a video made available on Saturday September 28 showing an armed undercover police officer guarding a stairwell approaching the scene of the terror attack
Brave: An armed undercover police officer, left, and head of Westgate security (no name available), right, approach the terrorists
Rescued: Undercover police officers and police with guns asking shoppers caught up in the incident to leave with their hands up as they crouch on the ground for cover
Escape: A young girl runs from a store in Westgate, beckoned on by officials and shoppers
One girl at the event, 16-year-old Nehal Vekariya, was shot through the eye, according to The Sunday Times.
The paper reports her father’s final phone conversation with her.
He said: ‘She said “I’m okay, I’m with friends, call Mummy fast and tell her I’m okay”.’
When her mother called her she heard yelling and then gunshots, then the line went dead. She had been cut down at close range.
The paper also reports that witnesses describe children as young as five being hit up to five times by the terrorists, as they roamed the mall looking for victims.

Terrified: Civilians take cover as the gunmen roam the mall

Saved: A woman drops from a ventilator shaft in the mall as plain clothed police rescue her
A soldier carries a child to safety as armed police hunt the gunmen who went on a brutal shooting spree at Westgate shopping centre in Nairobi ion September 21
Memorial: A soldier from the Kenya Defence Forces salutes while another pays his respects as they and other Kenyans came to light candles, sing and pray,to mark one week since the terrorist attack
Solemn: A Kenyan girl lights a candle to pay her respects to those killed in the Westgate mall massacre
Mitul Shah, 38, meanwhile, a London-born father of one caught up in the siege, was hailed a ‘hero and a star’ for reportedly offering hicmself as a hostage to allow children to escape from militants.
According to The Sunday Times, one of the gunmen told victims: 'You didn't spare our women and children. Why should we spare yours?'
Firefighters, police and soldiers were faced with horrific scenes when they entered the mall.
Candlelight vigil held for mall attack victims
One firefighter told the paper how he was sent in to put out a fire in the CCTV control room, started by rocket-propelled grenades that were fired by soldiers.
He heard screaming from a balcony, then gunshots, then saw blood dripping from above. Some security men were crying, he said. Then a severed hand and a head wrapped in cloth landed on the floor next to them.
A Western security official told The Sunday Times: 'They were saying to the troops, "If you come any closer we will execute a hostage".'
The extremists had piled dead bodies up against the doors to hinder their progress.
It's understood from intelligence sources that the Kenyan military deliberately caved in the top floor car park to kill them, by firing rocket-propelled grenades at the support columns. They assumed that if the hostages weren't already dead, they soon would be.
Al Shabaab was making proclamations on social media that they weren't willing to negotiate.
As many as 30 hostages were taken by the terrorists according to the British High Commission, with many of them still unaccounted for.
A British SAS unit was on standby to help the Kenyan military, but they weren't called in.
Eight suspects are being held over the attack according to Kenya’s Interior Minister Joseph Ole Lenku said. Three others who had been detained were released. At least five attackers also were killed.
Destroyed: Vehicles are seen in the rubble in the destruction at the Westgate Shopping Centre
However, there are fears that some of the extremists, including suspected British terrorist Samantha Lewthwaite, may be on the loose, having escaped through the city’s drainage system.
A unnamed source told The Sun on Sunday: ‘It may have been a way out for some of the terrorists. They could have escaped like sewer rats.’
On Saturday leaked intelligence briefings revealed that the Kenyan government had been warned some months ago Al Shabaab was planning an attack in Nairobi between September 13 and 21.
One report named suspected  terrorists in Nairobi who were ‘planning to mount suicide attacks on an undisclosed date, targeting Westgate Mall’ and a cathedral.
Mutea Iringo, principal secretary in the Ministry of Interior, said: ‘Every day we get intelligence and action is taken as per that intelligence and many attacks averted. But the fact that you get the intelligence does not mean something cannot happen.
‘What we are saying is that we are at war, and that every day some young Kenyan is being radicalised by al Shabaab to kill Kenyans.’
The murderous attack on the Westgate shopping mall in Kenya has brought home the need for ‘permanent vigilance’ against terrorism in the UK, Prime Minister David Cameron said today.
Mr Cameron said he had no intelligence of plans for an ‘imminent’ attack in Britain but acknowledged that there was a ‘worry’ that British-based Somalis trained by the extremist Al-Shabaab group in the east African country might return to the UK with the intention of committing outrages.
He said that he had chaired meetings of the Government's Cobra emergency contingency committee over the past week to discuss the implications of the Westgate attack.
Contingency plans have already been put in place in the period following the similar attacks in Mumbai, India, in 2008, he said.
Mr Cameron told BBC1's Andrew Marr Show: ‘We have been looking at this for a long time because of the appalling attack that happened in Mumbai in India.
‘I have personally chaired a whole series of meetings years ago, but again actually this week, to check that we have got everything in place to prepare for those sorts of attacks.
‘We don't have intelligence that something is about to happen, but it pays to be very, very prepared, very, very cautious, and to work out we have everything in place we can to deal with awful events like this.’
Asked whether he was concerned that British-based Somalis might export terror from the African state to the UK, Mr Cameron said: ‘There is always a worry of that and there is a hotbed of terrorism in Somalia that spills over into other countries, and we are concerned about that and follow that.
‘What it shows I think is that we have to keep going against Islamist extremism, whether that is people that are home-grown in our own country or whether it is extremism that is fomenting either on the Horn of Africa or in West Africa or in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
‘It goes to this whole argument about why we need well-funded intelligence services, why we need to be engaged in the world, we need to share intelligence with others and why we have to be permanently vigilant.
‘I take these responsibilities incredibly seriously, I chair the Cobra meetings myself and I make sure that everything from ambulance to fire to police, that everything is prepared.
‘We don't have intelligence about anything imminent, but of course when that Mumbai attack happened and you see what happened in Kenya, any responsible government would look at its own processes and procedures, and say how would we cope with something like that?’

14  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Man sent pictures of himself with a bag over his head and hands bound to extort on: 29-09-2013 05:32 PM
A man has been jailed for faking his own kidnap to extort money from his family.
Zubair Hussain claimed that his kidnappers were threatening to kill him and sent pictures of himself with a bag over his head and with his hands bound.
Hussain's distraught family received text messages claiming that the 24-year-old driver, from Sparkbrook, Birmingham, had been kidnapped on New Year's Eve.

Bound and gagged: Shameless Hussain sent these horrifying pictures to his family claiming he had been kidnapped
The series of messages demanded money in order to ensure Hussain did not come to harm.
They then reported the supposed kidnapping to police and a large-scale investigation was launched by city detectives.
But 24 hours later authorities tracked Hussain to a house in the Ernsford Grange area of Coventry.
He was safe and well and there was no trace of anyone holding him against his will.
Zubair was subsequently arrested and charged with blackmail in April.
Deceitful: Hussain hoped his family would pay a ransom to ensure his safety
Zubair appeared before Warwickshire Justice Centre on Friday (27 September), where he pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to eight months imprisonment.
Detective Inspector Martin Brennan, from West Midlands Police Serious and Organised Crime Unit, said: 'This case highlights what can happen when someone makes false accusations and wastes police time in such an audacious manner.
'Any report of kidnap is treated very seriously and significant, costly, resources are deployed to ensure the victim is returned safe and well, whilst those responsible are detained.
'To recklessly make such claims not only wastes police resources which could have been used elsewhere but caused his family and friends unnecessary distress.
'The family believed that Zubair had been kidnapped and that there was a real possibility of him being seriously harmed or even killed.
'Hopefully this prison sentence demonstrates that such incidents will be dealt with robustly by the courts and should act as a deterrent to others.'

15  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / World’s most tragic bride is married after two years in a coma. on: 19-09-2013 05:29 PM
A woman who spent two years in a coma was bid a heartbreaking farewell by loved ones, who switched off her life-support machine just hours after she was married.
He Jingjing and her fiance Lu Lai, of Guangdong in southeast China, had the world at their feet in 2011.
Both had found top jobs in the local government at Guangzhou, they had recently bought a flat and were planning to get married.
Emotional: Lu Lai (in the green t-shirt) finally married his fiance shortly before her life-support was switched off
Embrace: Her mother Li Xing embraces He Jingjing during her 28th birthday celebration
But their plans for a long and happy life together were cut tragically short when He Jingjing was taken ill one day at work.
She slipped into a coma on her way to hospital and never woke up.
Two years on, her family gathered by her bedside to celebrate her 28th birthday complete with a cake, and then took part in a wedding ceremony, finally fulfilling the couple's dream of marrying.
Her organs will now be donated to help other people in need.
Lu Lai said: 'I am happy she will have helped others to live but for me I don't think about her living on in others, for me she will live on in my heart forever. I will always miss her.
'No matter how, she will live in my heart forever.'
Relieving the tragic events leading up to when his bride-to-be was taken ill, Lu Lai said: 'We wanted a special wedding, so we were doing overtime to make sure we saved up enough.
'She was ill but she did not want to stop work. Then one day I had a call to say she had collapsed at her computer and been taken to hospital.
Only child: He Jingjing's heartbroken father Fang Lu kisses his daughter while friends and relatives look on
'They said she had stopped breathing on the way, and had to be resuscitated.
'I was told at the hospital she was alive but later it became clear that she had been permanently brain damaged. There was nothing we could do for her.'
Her father Fang Lu said: 'She was such a wonderful, vibrant young woman. I can't believe she is gone, but she did always say she was prepared to be an organ donor and this way part of her will live on and help others to life.
'She was our only child, we wanted to have one last special thing together.'
Heartbroken: He Jingjing's family pay tribute to their daughter and fiance, who slipped into a coma.

16  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Mother's shock after her baby girl is born with two front teeth. on: 19-09-2013 02:13 PM
A mother has spoken of her shock after she gave birth to a baby with two fully formed front teeth.
Vicki Griffiths had planned to Bosom feed little Eva Faith but changed her mind after seeing the newborn’s teeth.
Eva astounded nurses and midwives as well as her family when she was born weighing 7lbs 4oz at the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

Eva Faith was born on September 8 with two front teeth in her lower gum. Her mother, Vicki Griffiths, 26, said she had been planning to Bosom feed but that she changed her mind when she saw the teeth

Initially, nobody realised and it was only when Mrs Griffiths went to have a bath after giving birth that her husband Steven spotted the teeth in his daughter’s lower jaw.
Mrs Griffiths, a 26-year-old child minder, said: ‘When I came back into the room Steven said, “she’s got teeth, you know!” and then we both burst out laughing.
‘We were in shock, and so were the midwives.

‘She had her mouth closed to begin with, so we didn’t notice. It was quite bizarre to see them.’
She added: ‘I had been planning to Bosom feed, but when I saw Eva’s teeth I was put off. I don’t think anybody could blame me!’
Mr and Mrs Griffiths now worry that Eva will soon start sprouting more teeth before she is old enough to have Calpol or other children’s medicine.

Jonathan Wyllie, consultant neonatologist at James Cook, said: 'It probably happens about three times every two years here and we deliver 4,000 babies a year. It's every 2,000 to 3,000 births'

Mr and Mrs Griffiths (pictured) are worried that Eva will grow more teeth before she is old enough to be given any pain relief
The mother-of-three said: ‘I kept asking the midwives and nurses what I could give Eva if she was in pain, but nobody was able to answer me.
‘They just kept going away and then coming back with more people to look at Eva’s teeth. Nobody could believe it.
‘When we came out of hospital I went to see my GP and he said that he had never heard of this happening before.
‘Midwives with 25-years’ experience were also saying they’d never seen it.’
Little Eva Faith was born on September 8 and is now at home with her parents and older sisters Elizabeth, seven, and Emily, five, in Redcar, Cleveland.
At first Mrs Griffiths thought the teeth would have to be removed in case Eva were to choke on them, but she was checked over by a paediatrician who said they were stable enough not to present a problem.
Mrs Griffiths said: 'I had been planning to Bosom feed, but when I saw Eva's teeth I was put off. I don't think anybody could blame me!'
Eva is now thriving on bottled milk and delighting all that meet her with her unusual feature.
Mrs Griffiths added: ‘Eva often has her mouth open, especially after she has woken up.
‘A professional baby photographer came round to take some pictures, and she simply could not believe it. Everyone thinks Eva is lovely, but can’t get over her teeth.’
Jonathan Wyllie, consultant neonatologist at James Cook, said: ‘It probably happens about three times every two years here and we deliver 4,000 babies a year. It’s every 2,000 to 3,000 births.
‘Babies are born with one or two teeth and it’s usually in the lower gum.’

17  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Heart-stopping moment a worker narrowly escapes burning apartment on: 18-09-2013 10:06 AM
Dramatic footage captured the moment a group of workers helped rescue a man from a burning New York apartment block.
A fire had broken out in a Washington Heights building when a man in a red shirt was seen standing on a window ledge, five floors up, whilst thick black smoke poured out from behind him.
Two workers on the fire escape believed they could help the man who then decides to dangle down from the ledge precariously.
Man on a ledge: A man dangle precariously out of a fifth floor apartment window in New York's Washington Heights
Madness: Before a ladder can be put in place, a worker decides to see if he can reach the apartment by stretching across the void
The limit: The man in red can take no more of the fumes and decided to dangle precariously out of the apartment
Ladder in place: The ladder is securely in place but it's still a long way down!
Rosendo Lopez, a building super, brought a ladder to the fire escape and after the worker made his way to a fourth-floor window directly below, a group of men created a bridge with the ladder and helped him across.
The men attempt to secure the ladder so that it won't move but the ladder is shaky and can be seen flailing as the workers try to secure it.
Heart-stopping moment man narrowly escapes burning building

Eventually, the ladder is secured by resting one end on the railings of the fire escape, with the other protruding through a  fourth floor window.
Balancing act: The brave neighbor treads carefully across the ladder to reach the escaping man
Caught! Incredibly the daring neighbor managed to catch the man as he lets go of the widow ledge, whilst still several floors above the ground without any kinds of support whatsoever
Smoked out: Smoke is still billowing as the duo make their way back to the fire escape
Sirens can be heard as the fire department arrive, but as they're still several floors below, it's not known if they'll make it in time.
As the smoke billows out of the fifth floor window,  finally, one man jumps onto the horizontal-laying ladder and risks his own life by walking across the void between the fire escape and the window ledge.
He manages to guide the dangling man's feet onto the thin, round steps of the ladder, four stories above solid concrete.
Cheers are heard as the two men grab one another and slowly crouch back onto the fire escape.
A firefighter arrives on the scene to see the two men on the ladder and begins shouting 'Get over here! Get off, get off!'
Safe at last! Cheers are heard as the man and his rescuer make it back to the fire escape
The man who recorded the whole incident gives them a message of his own: 'You guys are late, beat it!'
The two make it safely a seriously injured.

18  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / 'They were on their last straw of hope': Moment two fishermen were rescued. on: 16-09-2013 10:26 AM
A normal day of fishing went awry for two Bahamian men after their boat capsized.
Helpless, two men clung to the boat's hulls for eight days.
A passing freighter spotted the men clinging to the overturned boat. It is believed that had they not been spotted, the men would have died.
Two Bahamian men, pictured, were rescued by the US Coast Guard off the coast of Florida after spending eight days lost at sea. Their identities have not been released

'They were really exposed and really deteriorating quicky,' Coast Guard rescue swimmer Kyle Stallings said to The Sun Sentinel.

Stallings also said the victims were completely waterlogged when found. He said their skin was deteriorating and their eyes were drooping.
'They were both in tears. You could tell they were on their last straw of hope,' Stallings said.
The victims' names were not released on Saturday. They are reportedly 56 and 57 years old.

The freighter that spotted the two stranded men contacted the US Coast Guard. It authorized the launch of an MH-65 rescue helicopter from Air Station Miami, WPTV reports.
The helicopter arrived around 5pm with four officers on Saturday after just finishing a training mission. Stallings was soon lowered from the helicopter and assessed the men's condition.
The rescued men told the officers that they had consumed seawater, which can speed up dehydration, says The Los Angeles Times.
US Coast Guard officers had just finished a training mission, like the one seen in this file photo, before rescuing the two stranded men

Coast Guard Pilot Jerod Glover said the men were found vomiting and shaking.
'It's the first time I've done a rescue where it's like something you see on TV, where people [are] saying [they] shouldn't be alive,' he said to The Sun Sentinel.
The men were taken to the Delray Medical Center for treatment. They were not found with life jackets.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection is now handling the case.

This is the heart-stopping moment a bungling hitman's clumsiness saved the life of his helpless victim - after the would-be killer ran out of bullets as he stood over his target.
Suspect Michele Morelli's bad luck turned out to be a blessing for Michele Di Bari, 31, as he stared at the barrel of the handgun thinking his life was about to end.
But as the would-be killer pulled the trigger, it simply clicked over and over - leaving him no option but to turn and flee.

Morelli, 24, was eventually captured after detectives got hold of CCTV footage showing a suspected hitman scarpering from the scene.
Winged: Di Bari is hit in the leg and crumples to the floor after being chased by a man with a gun
Death looms: But the pistol only clicks as the gunman repeatedly pulls the trigger
Fortunate one: The gunman flees and Di Bari escapes with his life
It is the latest in a series of murders and attempted murders this month that are so far believed to be linked to the mafia.
Di Bari, a car salesman, can be seen begging for his life as renowned crook Morelli stands over him in a deserted street in the southern Italian town of Foggia.
Although the district is prime territory of the local mafia, known as the Sacra Corona Unita, police believe it was a personal vendetta.
The film begins with Morelli cycling down a street and his victim standing in between two parked cars.
A few minutes later, Di Bari is seen running along the street being chased by the gunman who is firing wildly at him, hitting several parked cars and missing his target.
Initial pursuit: The intended victim flees as bullets fly past him
The would-be assassin follows closely behind, firing wildly
Eventually one bullet strikes Di Bari in the leg causing him to crash to the floor on a corner.
A man said to be Morelli approaches and stands over him as his target begs for his life.
Aiming at his head, he coldly pulls the trigger several times. But after his six failed shots earlier, he has run out of bullets so he simply turns and runs off.
Di Bari is seen writhing in agony before a camera further up the street again picks up Morelli running away - leaving his victim in agony, but still alive.
Suspect Morelli was arrested after police seized CCTV which they believe shows him running from the scene

Paramedics were quick to the scene and an ambulance took him to a local hospital for treatment to a serious leg wound.
Police recovered several bullets which had struck parked cars and Morelli was arrested days later.
He is now in custody accused of attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm.
He is known to police and has minor convictions. Beyond his own criminal activity, Morelli was the victim of an attempted murder four years ago.
Michele Pucci, head of Foggia Flying Squad, said: 'Di Bari can consider himself a very lucky man indeed.
Collateral damage: A car is gouged by a bullet
One of the bullet casings at the scene
'The footage clearly shows just how close he came to being killed - he certainly had a guardian angel or some divine protection that day because he could very well be dead now. It was a miracle escape for him.
'Morelli was using a small handgun, 7.65 calibre, and had fired six times at Di Bari, all of the bullets except one hit parked cars and missed him but one did catch him in the leg, leaving him with a serious injury.
'Luck was smiling on Di Bari. But not Morelli as we eventually caught up with him and arrested him after he was recognised from the footage.'
The motive for the shooting is still unclear as Di Bari and Morelli have both refused to speak to police.
Investigators believe it could possibly be over a car sale, drugs or territorial rivalry.

20  Forum / Politics / Breaking news: Ozekhome Freed After 20 Days In Captivity. on: 12-09-2013 05:50 PM
Exactly 20 days after he was forcefully abducted by gunmen suspected to be kidnappers, human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate, Chief Mike Ozekhome was released by his captors in the early hours of today.
He arrived his Lagos home at 11.45 a.m. in a  black SUV with registration number LXR 24 AY enroute from airport to his Igando home. He returned into the waiting arm of his wife, Josephine.

Hundreds of well wishers, family members and associates gathered in his mansion on Ozhekome Lane in Igando to welcome him. They praised God for bringing him back alive.
Journalists also besieged his home and when he alighted from the vehicle, there was dancing and shouts of praises to God for His mercy.

Ozekhome, who was in tears of joy, said he will address the press later in the day and the only thing he could say at that moment was “thank you Jesus.”
Some prominent lawyers and human rights activists on Thursday hailed the release of a legal practitioner, Mr Mike Ozekhome (SAN), by his abductors.
They also urged government to intensify efforts in addressing the security challenges in the country.
Mr. Taiwo Taiwo, Chairman, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Lagos branch, told NAN that the release was a huge relief for the legal profession.
“We are happy about the release, but we should not lose sight of the fact that there is so much insecurity in the nation.
“The government must double its efforts to arrest the incessant kidnapping of Nigerians,” Taiwo said.
A lawyer and human rights activist, Mr Fred Agbaje, said he was disappointed with the time it took to secure Ozekhome’s release.
Agbaje said, “We are happy that he has been released, but we are disappointed with the efforts of our security operatives.”
He urged government at all levels to take urgent steps to address the issue of the welfare of Nigerians.
Mr Adetokunbo Mumuni, Executive Director, Socioeconomic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), a human rights group, also expressed a similar view.
Mumuni said: “The point that should be made, in spite of the release of Ozekhome and others who had been kidnapped in the past, is that we need to improve our security apparatus.
“This is the only way to attract foreign investments into the country, because nobody would want to invest in an unsafe environment.”
On his part, a human rights activist, Mr Ayodele Akele, said the security agencies should live up to their mandate.
“It is embarrassing that someone could be kidnapped for over two weeks in this country,” Akele said.
Ozekhome, who was kidnapped with his driver and chieftain of All Progressive Congress, APC, Athanasius Ugbome, at Ehor, located along Benin/Auchi highway, remained in captivity for so long allegedly due to the inability of his family members to reach an agreement on the ransom to be paid to the kidnappers.
While Ozekhome remained in captivity, Mr. Ugbome was released last week after an undisclosed sum of money was paid by his family members.
A family source who allegedly spoke under condition of anonymity, then said the family offered far below what the kidnappers demanded.
“They (the kidnappers) were saying that the lawyer (Ozhekome) is a very rich man, and N100 million should be a chicken change(sic) to him. They said they were aware that he made so much money from election tribunals’ litigation,” the source allegedly said.
The Senior Advocate was allegedly let off the hook by the kidnappers this morning after an undisclosed sum of money was paid as ransom.
When contacted on phone, Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Foluso Adebanjo, confirmed Ozekhome’s release, saying, “yes, he has been released. I will give you the details later.”
