| A twenty-eight-year-old security, Lukman, who was accused of armed robbery, has been found dead in police custody in Ibadan, Oyo State. The suspect, who was a guard at Agodi spare parts shop, was allegedly tortured to death by police officers at Gate 2 Police Division. He was said to have been arrested and detained last Friday by the police when his employers reported a robbery incident and accused the deceased. However, when his family went to the station last Sunday to check on him, he was found dead in the police cell. But when contacted the police public relations Officer (PPRO) DSP Olabisi Clet-Ilobanafor dismissed the report, saying there was no iota of truth in the report as the late Lukman committed suicide. She insisted that Lukman committed suicide using his clothe ((Jalabia) he wore the night of the incident, saying his cellmates could testify to that. | | |

| The police in Katsina state on Thursday arraigned a 19-year-old housewife, Aisha Idris, in a Katsina Chief Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly causing her mate, Sa’adatu, to miscarry. The police prosecutor, Sgt. Okolo Usman told the court that the complainant (Sa’adatu) and the accused were wives of Malam Idris of Shinkafi village in Katsina local government area. Usman said the complainant, in a statement she made to the police, said that they had a misunderstanding which led to a fight. According to him, Aisha took a pestle and hit Sa’adatu on back where she fell down and in the process, had a miscarriage. Usman said that the offence was contrary to section 234(a) of the Penal Code Law, if convicted on the charges, the accused could spend up to five years in prison or get an option to pay a fine or both. The Chief Magistrate, Mr Mustapha Hassan admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N50,000 and adjourned the case to Sept. 12, for further mentioning. | | |

| At least nine people died and many more received injuries in a landslide at Edim Otop community in the Calabar metropolis on September 4, 2013, Wednesday. The Information Director of Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), David Akate, revealed these sad facts the capital of the state, Calabar, on September 5, 2013, Thursday. The disaster happened due to heavy rains which lasted for more than five hours. The official noted that Cross River Government issued a warning to residents of flood-prone communities and recommended them to leave dangerous areas. “We have been telling them that the place is not only a ravine but a flood-prone area, but they refused to take our advice,” he said. David Akate assured the State Government had taken responsibility for the treatment of the survivors, whom he said, were responding to treatment. The SEMA official also added that the corpses of the deceased have been deposited at the state General Hospital mortuary. A witness, Eno Akpan, said: “we were just sitting outside discussing about the down pour when suddenly we saw trees rolling down from the top of the hill. “Within a twinkle of an eye, it collapsed on the building and buried the entire occupants. “Well, at that time there was nothing we could do because everybody started running away in confusion, and we were hearing cries and shouts of some of children from within from the house. “But by the time help could come, the family was gone and only three were rescued,” she said | | |
