Former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Dr (Mrs) Farida Waziri,OFR has reminded former President Olusegun Obasanjo that ability to be used to witch hunt political enemies in the rabid pursuit of a third term agenda has never been part of the qualifications for appointment as chairman of the anti-graft agency.
Waziri stated this while reacting to publications on allegations made against her by the former president. Obasanjo had been quoted as saying that Waziri was not qualified to head the EFCC when she was appointed chairman of the Commission.
According to the statement personally signed by Waziri “My attention has been drawn to a number of allegations made against me by Mr Obasanjo. One of such was the alleged involvement of former Delta state governor, James Ibori in my appointment. While I hold the office of a Head of state, either serving or retired in the highest esteem, I will like to put on record for the umpteenth time that this is totally unfounded, blantant lie and arrant falsehood. It is therefore worrisome when a man who has been twice a Nigerian head of state can descend so low to peddle falsehood. The truth is that I never met Ibori in my life until after months in office as chairman of the EFCC when I used to see him in the presidential villa.
It is on record today that I initiated the investigation that drove Ibori into the waiting hands of Interpol and Metpolice. As such, it is illogical and nonsensical for anyone to continue to insinuate that Ibori has a hand in my appointment. I remember this was one of the lies Obasanjo’s sit-tight pawns cooked to stop my appointment as EFCC chairman in 2008.
“On the issue of qualifications raised by Obasanjo, the qualification for appointment as chairman of the Commission as stipulated in its Establishment Act says that the chairman shall ‘be a serving or retired member of any government security or law enforcement agency not below the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police or equivalent; and possess not less than 15 years cognate experience’. Late President Yar’adua did not have to alter the Establishment Act when he was appointing me unlike what Obasanjo did.
“Again for the records, I served in the Nigeria Police force for 35 years and got to the pinnacle of my career before my appointment as EFCC chairman. If Obasanjo’s real age has not blurred his memory, I will like to remind him that I was a Commissioner of Police, Admin Force CID, CP General Investigations, CP Anti-fraud, CP X squad, CP Police Special Fraud Unit where I secured the first conviction in a case of Advance Fee Fraud in Nigerian history. These are all prime investigative organs of the Nigeria Police where I related with other law enforcement agencies including the FBI across the world. I must place on record that at SFU, I did not only relate with FBI, Interpol and Metpolice among others , we carried out joint operations at different times on a number of cases. I have also led the Nigerian delegation to the Interpol headquarters in France.
“To further expose the height of mischief in the allegations, the past and present chairmen of the EFCC have both worked under me, yet someone can open his mouth to say I am not qualified to head the same agency. This is in addition to my educational qualifications such as a first degree in Law, a Master degree in Law and another Master degree in Strategic studies. I doubt if Obasanjo himself can boast of this level of educational qualifications.
“I will also like to remind Obasanjo that no chairman of the EFCC has till date beaten my records in terms of investigation of high profile cases, prosecution, conviction and recovery.
“I will like to warn that those who live in glass house don’t throw stones and as such Obasanjo should not allow me open up on him. Respectable elder statesmen act and speak with decorum”
A middle aged man, Seyi Adewale, his wife, Felicia and their three-month-old daughter, Deborah, were on Tuesday, found dead in their room with the corpses already decomposing. According to report, they just moved into their new house in Gbeganu area in Minna, Niger State last Saturday and they died that same night.
It was gathered that they switched on their generating at night, close to the room while the fume emitting from the set consumed them overnight and they never woke up to see the next day.
They were discovered on Tuesday by the junior sister of the deceased husband, who had been making frantic effort to locate her brother but couldn't.
It was a shocker to her after forcing the door of the house open to meet them dead after being killed by fume from the generator. She immediately raised alarm which attracted other neighbours to the scene.
When contacted, the state police command through its spokesman, Mr Richard Oguche, confirmed the deaths, and said they must have died as a result of inhaling the carbon monoxide from the generating set, which was turned on overnight and left close to their room.
The corpses have been buried in Minna, the Niger State capital.
Four cows and 37 butchers have been arrested by officials of the Lagos State Government in conjunction with the police taskforce, for operating at an illegal slaughter slab at Otto Awori area of Badagry, Lagos State.
Officials of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, with the taskforce, stormed the area on Tuesday and arrested the cows and suspects. Four vans of butchered meat were also carted away to the Taskforce office at Alausa where the suspects would be arraigned in court. The four cows were taken to Agege Abattoir.
Chairman of the illegal butchers, Adewunmi Olaseun, said they normally slaughter about 20 cows on daily basis, adding that they also pay N18,000 levy to officials of the Lagos State Government and N5,000 to the Otto Awori Local Council Development Area, LCDA, on weekly basis. He said the association did not know that they were operating at an illegal slaughter slab.
Olaseun said the meat being sold by the butchers was not contaminated, stressing that “the fact is that we also consume the meat at times. So, there is nothing wrong with the meat. We consume it. Our wives also consume it, so it is safe for consumption. We have the receipts of the payment made to the government in our office.”
When asked why they attacked government officials with charms, he said: “The charms on us were to protect us against armed robbers. We deal with money and we can’t allow robbers to kill us just like that. So, it is meant for protection against robbers.”

Mbunabo was however said to have defaulted after collecting the money from the complainant. The incident reportedly happened in the Victoria Garden City, Ajah area of Lagos. The police, after arresting Mbunabo, arraigned him on Wednesday on two counts of fraud and stealing.
“That you, Uchenna Mbunabo, sometimes in January, 2012, at Victoria Garden City, Ajah, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did with intent to defraud, unlawfully obtain the cash sum of one million seven hundred thousand Naira (N1,700,000) from one Maryjane Okoye, under the pretence that you will produce her movie, a presentation you knew to be false.” – the charges read in part
He has however pleaded not guilty. His case was adjourned till the 7th of October after magistrate Mrs S.K Matepo ordered him to pay .5million bail.
Attorney Collection Scam: Nigerian Fraudsters Arrested In Toronto Canada & The USA Official Press Release By The EFCC A Nigerian, Emmanuel Ehkator who was investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for criminal conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud in the United States of America has been sentenced by District Court Judge, Middle District of Pennsylvania, Yvette Kane, to a three-year term. He is also ordered to pay $11,092,028 in restitution to his victims.
The conviction of Ehkator, 42, who was arrested in Nigeria by the EFCC in August 2010 and extradited to the United States in August 2011, followed his plea of guilt.
Justice Kane also ordered Ehkator’s forfeiture of properties in Canada and the contents of several bank accounts in Nigeria.
While the trial lasted, the prosecutor informed the court that Ehkator was part of an attorney collection scam. Their modus operandi, he said was for the convict to contact U.S. and Canadian law firms by e-mail claiming to be individuals or businesses outside North America who were owed money by entities in the United States and asked for legal representation to collect the money.
The prosecutor further told the court that, “often, the prospective “clients” said the money owed came from a real estate transaction, tort claim, or divorce settlement. Once the law firm agreed to represent the out-of-country client, the law firm would be contacted by the U.S. entity purportedly owing money with an offer to pay the client by cheque. The client would instruct the law firm to deposit the cheque in the law firm’s trust account, retain the law firm’s fee, and wire the remaining funds to accounts in Asia”.
The cheque that was then mailed to the law firm would be a counterfeit cheque, a fact that would be discovered only after funds from the law firm’s trust account had been wired to the Asian bank, the prosecution said this was confirmed by .com source.
The counterfeit cheques, which appeared to be drawn on legitimate accounts from well-established financial institutions, often included a telephone number for the financial institution. Lawyers attempting to determine the validity of the cheque would call the number only to reach another conspirator who would falsely verify the cheque. The court was also told that Ehkator’s involvement in the scheme makes him responsible for losses of more than $7 million and up to $20 million.
According to .com source Ehkator’s co-defendant, Yvette Mathurin, has also been charged for conspiracy and is awaiting extradition from Canada while another co-conspirator, Kingsley Osagie, was arrested as he arrived in the Atlanta area from Nigeria and is currently awaiting trial in the Middle District of Pennsylvania. Other co-conspirators are pending extradition from several foreign countries as investigation continues against other members of the large, multi-national conspiracy.
Aside from the EFCC, other agencies that investigated the crime were the United States Postal Inspection Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the United States Secret Service, the Toronto Police Services and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Christy H. Fawcett.

Two traffic policewomen catch in a video receiving N100 bribe from a bus driver in Lagos State have been dismissed from the Nigerian Police Force. The women corporals Elizabeth Itolor and Jenifer Azingbe, attached to the Makinde police station, were handed their dismissal letters today. The corporals’ dismissal was contained in a circular which stated that the policewomen were dismissed over despicable acts and corrupt practices contrary to Paragraph E(iii)and C(iii)respectively of Schedule 1 of the Police Act and Regulations 370 of the Federation of Nigeria 1990. The policewomen were recruited into the Nigeria Police Force in 2004. A source, who requested anonymity, informed .com that the women got to the office today and they were handed their dismissal letters. “They have been crying since morning. They have gone to Keyamo chambers and other human rights offices to seek for help. The dismissal has come as a shock,” the source said.
The policewomen have been awaiting their fate since the police Provost Unit of the Lagos State police command had concluded the Orderly room trial into the allegation last week.
A 12-year-old girl, Miss Ijeoma Mbiaka, on Wednesday narrated to DailyPost how the pastor of her church, Rhema Ministries in Oyeagu Abagana in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, Rev Sampson Otisi allegedly lured her to a hotel, under the guise of conducting deliverance on her but ended up molesting her all through the night. Ijeoma, who is hard at hearing, told our reporter that she had gone to the church to seek prayers from the pastor so that she could hear loudly again.
She, however, said she was lured to the hotel and molested from 9 pm to the next morning and dumped in the hotel room, where she cried until hotel attendants rescued her.Speaking at the Magistrate Court Abagana after a court session, Ijeoma said she prayed all night reminding the pastor of the consequence of his act, but his pleas fell on deaf ears.
The victim came to the court aided as a result of the injuries she sustained during the alleged act.According to her,
"It started on a Tuesday when I went to the church for prayers. I have not been hearing clearly with my ears for sometime, so I went to the pastor for prayers and when I told him my problem, he said I should stay behind that he will pray for me after everyone has gone"."After the session that day, he called me to the backyard and started praying for me. He poured anointing oil into my ear and mouth. He now ordered me to remove my dress and he poured some on my tummy and started massaging it. After sometime, he started putting his hand inside (honeypot), to which I objected. He said he will leave me if I do not want him to pray for me".
Ijeoma narrated that as usual the pastor had asked her to stay behind, that he will conduct a special prayer for her and her hearing will be okay again.
"After the service, only he and his friend were left, he said he will take me to the house and pray for me, but when I objected and told him that my father will kill me, he said I should not mind that nothing will happen to me. "He took me to a hotel, ran upstairs and came back and ordered me and his friend to come with him. He took us up and put his friend in another room and took me to a separate room. He ordered food for me and hot drink, to which I objected. He said the drink was part of the deliverance that I had to drink it. He forced it down my throat and when I started to feel sleepy he undressed me and inserted his 'something' into me; then he started pushing it in and pushing out. "Even when blood was gushing out of me, he continued to push the 'thing' inside. I tried shouting but he covered my mouth, when I could not help myself, I started praying and telling him of the implication of what he was doing to me before God but he kept on".
She said she was only freed the next morning when she regained consciousness and started banging the door of the hotel room asking for assistance.
Though Ijeoma said she complained to her mum when she got back after the first incident, her mum, Mrs Ifeoma who also spoke to DailyPost said she confronted the pastor the next day and he denied putting his hand under the girls pant, claiming he was only praying for her; a defense which led the gullible woman to accept that the pastor meant well.
She stated that the truth, however, dawned on her on the following Tuesday when her daughter went to the same church and failed to return home.
"I thought she had been kidnapped, in fact I believe this is also kidnap", she told our reporter.
A copy of medical report issued to her by the Chief Medical Officer of Enugu Ukwu General Hospital, Dr J.O Akuka which her parents showed to our reporter revealed that she sustained bruises, and a torn hymen.
This showed that there was a penetration in her honeypot.Ijeoma's mother pleaded with the relevant authorities to help her find justice for her innocent daughter who was violated by a man she trusted to be a Man of God, as the matter is currently before a Magistrate court in Abagana.
He told a source close to .com that the pastor had allegedly offered him N500, 000 to keep sealed lips, an offer he rejected, but expressed fears that the pastor may use the money to subvert justice.
The pastor, Rev Otisi, who is the senior pastor of a branch of Rhema Church in Abagana refused to make comments when he was approached.His counsel, Barr CC Achi, however, said that the matter was only being engineered by unseen hands from behind as his client occupied a land that is in dispute.
"The issue here is land dispute, but these people are being used by someone who is in tussle over a piece of land with our client. On a separate allegation of being previously charged with the rape of 8-year-old in his church, the lawyer said it was not true, adding that it was meant to paint his client in bad light.

President Jonathan today September 11th honoured Africa's fastest woman, Blessing Okagbare. The Olympic and world Athletics Championship medalist was rewarded for her impressive performance at the recently concluded 2013 World Athletic Championship in Moscow. Blessing won the silver medal in the long jump and also placed third in the Women’s 200m race.
