She’s just awesome like that or what do you think?

5  Forum / Sports / 2014 W’Cup: Which team will face Eagles? on: 17-09-2013 01:07 PM

Which team will face Eagles

By Peter Edema

Penultimate weekend, 10 African countries; Nigeria, Cote d’ Ivoire, Egypt, Algeria, Ghana, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cameroon and Senegal booked their places in the final round of the 2014 World Cup African qualifiers.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is expected to pair these teams on a home- and-away fixture that will determine the five teams that will represent the continent in Brazil next year. The draws holds this afternoon in Cairo, Egypt.

The draws  will take place at 12h00 (local Egypt time). There will also be draws for each match to determine which team plays host first. The home and away play-off matches will be played between 11-15 October (1st legs) and 15-19 November (2nd legs)

Five of the 10 qualifiers, Nigeria, Cote d’ Ivoire, Ghana, Algeria and Tunisia  have been seeded by CAF for the draw based on the September FIFA Rankings released last Thursday. The remaining five teams, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Ethiopia, Senegal and Cameroon will be paired against any of the first five seeded ones.

Cote d’ Ivoire is African number one ranked team by FIFA on 19 followed by Ghana Black Stars ranked 24. Algeria is third African ranked team, 28 in the world with Nigeria following closely at 36. Tunisia, which qualified for the play-offs by default, after FIFA disqualified Cape Verde for fielding an ineligible player in its 2-0 win over Tunisia in Riades, is ranked 46 and is the seventh ranked team among the qualifiers.

Cape Verde’s 2-0 win was overturned and Tunisia was awarded a 3-0 victory which meant it finished above the Blue Sharks at the top of Group B.  It also meant the Carthage Eagles leapfrogged fellow play-off qualifiers Burkina Faso in FIFA’s rankings to be the fifth highest African team on FIFA’s list and claim its place among the top seeds.

Mali, ranked 32, is the third ranked African country, but failed to make it to the last stage of the qualifiers. Cape Verde, disqualified by FIFA last Thursday, is sixth ranked African team and  36 in the world.

The rankings do not translate to the fact that the ranked teams are superior.

With the rankings released, Super Eagles now has a clearer perspective of its potential opponents  with the likelihood that it will be drawn against any of these five teams: Egypt, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Senegal and Ethiopia.

What are Nigeria chances against any of the teams not ranked for the purpose of today’s draw?

Seven-time African champions, Egypt is one of the teams in Pot 2 that can upset any of the ranked teams.

Statistically, Egypt will be the toughest hurdle for Nigeria, while Burkina Faso looks the weakest. While Burkina Faso has not beaten Nigeria at any tournament, even before the country dropped Upper Volta as its name,  Egypt in its 15 previous clashes,  has lost six times to Nigeria and won four. The remaining five matches were drawn.

Egypt’s performance during the group stage also indicates that the team is on ascedancy. Having failed to qualify for the last two editions of the Nations Cup due to political crisis, the Pharaohs drawn against Guinea, Mozambique and Zimbabwe at the group stage, won all its matches both home and away, making it the only team to notch up 18 points.

This could explain why Egypt’s  former striker, Ahmed Hossam ‘Mido’ prefers Nigeria to any of the seeded teams. Mido said on Super Sport that he hopes the draw pitches Egypt against Nigeria.

“This will be very good for our national team because Nigeria has a good team and their players are very skilled. They keep improving since they won the last AFCON and it’s better for us to play against them and get tested.

Nigeria plays, “Real fast flowing football and that in the long run will only make Egypt better and will make our mission at the end easier.

“I don’t want Ghana or Cote d’ Ivoire. They are not suitable for us this time, nor is Algeria because of all the tension and outside drama between the two north African teams in football,” he said.

But Coach Stephen Keshi and his players have made it very clear that they are ready to face any team as they aim to qualify for the World Cup.

Emmanuel Emenike said of the draw: “I’m not scared of any team (for the playoffs) because we are champions of Africa.”

Indomitable Lions of Cameroon could be a dangerous customer for Nigeria, if past encounters are taken into consideration. Cameroon has a psychological edge over Nigeria when the two meet at the big stage, since the Camroonians seem to rise to the occasion when playing against Nigeria.

Nigeria and Cameroon have met 16 times, with Nigeria winning eight, Cameroon four and four drawn matches. The four losses to Cameroon were when it has mattered most; Africa Cup of Nations finals in 1984, 1988 and 2000. The last was the 1990 World Cup qualifier in Yaounde.  The last encounter between these countries was the quarterfinal of the 2004 Nations Cup in Monastir, Tunisia, which Nigeria won 2-1.  But considering Cameroon’s current form, it should not be a threat to Nigeria with the crisis rocking the team. Cameroon made it to the knockout stage after Togo forfeited a win to it.

Nigeria enjoys a favourable head-to-head record against Senegal having won eight of the 14 encounters, with Senegal winning four. Both teams have recorded two draws. But its performance at the group stage against Liberia, Angola and Uganda, winning three, drawing three is enough for any team to develop cold feet.

Nigeria and Ethiopia have met seven times with Super Eagles winning five times to Ethiopia’s one. Both teams drew once. Ethiopia’s only victory was achieved in a 1994 Nations Cup qualifier when it pipped mighty Nigeria 1-0 in Addis Ababa.

Statistically for Nigeria, the weakest team is the Stallions of Burkina Faso.  The two teams have met 13 times with Nigeria winning nine times and drawing the remaining four. Despite the head-to-head meetings, Burkina Faso could pose a threat since it is one of the teams on the ascendancy in the continent. Against all expectations, it was the runners up at the last Nations Cup in South Africa losing by a lone goal to Nigeria. At the group stage, despite forfeiting a match, it won the group with 12 points against Congo, Niger and Gabon. It recorded four wins and two loses. - Sourcehttp://guruscoded.com/sport-news-football-gist/2014-wcup-which-team-will-face-eagles/:
