|  feat: The surgical team that performed the feat at University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan. The first open heart surgery in a teaching hospital in Nigeria has been successfully carried out at the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan, Oyo State. The feat was carried out by surgeons at the UCH in conjunction with a team of surgeons from Tri-State Cardiovascular Delaware, United States of America, A statement by the institution’s Head of Information Unit, Mr. Toye Akinrinola, disclosed that the four-hour surgery was to correct a leaking heart valve in a 19-year-old secondary school leaver. An elated Chief Medical Director of the UCH, Professor Temitope Alonge, noted that the UCH was moved to embark on the exercise as a way of alleviating the hardship being experienced by Nigerians with heart-related challenges. He stated that as the first teaching hospital in Nigeria, the UCH should take the lead in critical areas of medicine, propelling it into ensuring that complex surgeries (like open heart surgery) were carried out in the hospital. “We are the pioneer teaching hospital in Nigeria, and we should be taking the lead. We are going to do this and we intend to make it a continuous exercise.“In fact, within the next six months, we intend carrying out not less than 30 heart-related surgeries and at affordable cost to Nigerians.” Alonge, who lamented that Nigerians pay exorbitantly to undergo such procedures outside the country, pointing out that the cheapest rate outside Nigeria was about N2.5 million. “This is outside the airfare and hotel bills. It will run into millions. But with us here, it will be a lot cheaper and the access is there. The first surgery is heavily subsidised as a way of encouraging Nigerians to have confidence in our healthcare system.” Alonge stated that the Federal Government had given the UCH a mandate to improve on the training of doctors as a way of enhancing more access to adequate healthcare in Nigeria. Leader of the doctors from the USA, Dr. Kamar Adeleke noted that the patient would be back to his normal activities in less than two months. “He does not have anything to fear about life expectancy. He will soon resume his normal activities, and do all the things he was used to before he took ill,” Dr. Adeleke said. Adeleke gave assurance of his continued support to providing access to adequate healthcare as obtained in other developed countries. After more than a decade of of inactivity, open heart surgery resumed in the country at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH, Enugu, at an average cost of N500, 000. | Attempt by a middle-aged man to present himself as a senior police commissioner and curry favour from unsuspecting government agencies in the Federal Capital Territory, has backfired, exposing him as fake Assistant Police Commissioner. Convinced that Kunle Adeshola, who also goes by the names of Dr. Kunle Shoal, Dr K. Adeshola and Sunday Mealayeshe Adekunle was not sincere in his exploits, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, immediately arrested and detained him in their custody. A statement from the commission made available to Vanguard yesterday, described the suspect as a serial impostor and self-acclaimed Assistant Commissioner of Police who has been parading himself as an operative of the EFCC and defrauding officials of government agencies under the guise of conducting phantom investigations. The statement, which was signed by EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, said Adeshola was nabbed on Thursday October 10, 2013 while trying to hoodwink the head of an unnamed federal government agency to write a letter supposedly to the Inspector General of Police to transfer him to the EFCC. According to the agency, the unsuspecting CEO wrote the pleading with the IG to second the fraudster to his agency with a view to sanitising the place. It was however leant that the suspects pocketed the letter and made the CEO to believe that the IG had sanctioned his deployment to the agency and was about to resume work there. However, EFCC agents arrested the suspect before he could “resume duties” at the agency. At the time of his arrest two fake identity cards were found on him, one of the cards bearing the name Dr. K Adeshola (ACP) identifies him as a staff of a nonexistent EFCC Monitoring Unit while the other is a police ID card with number: APF NO. 02576 with the name, Dr. Kunle Adeshola Search in his apartment in Lugbe, a suburb of Abuja yielded a number of documents suspected to be fake. |   Indecent dressing is a fad that does no one any good, if only ladies will understand. As you read this, this lady has lost her job at a Turkish TV station after she was accused of wearing an "unacceptable" dress. The lady, who is identified as Miss Kansu, is accused of taking her fashion sense to the "extreme". "We don’t intervene against anyone, but this is too much. It is unacceptable," said government spokesman. Turkish citizens are divided over the issue. Some say it is a welcome development as it would make ladies to learn to be moderate in their dressing, especially those who appear on televtion, as kids too watch TV. |  Men of the Nigeria Police Force were caught unawares on Monday when a gang of heavily armed gun men in their 30s invaded the police station and disarmed them of their weapons in broad day light. One policemen confessed: “I was just about to go in and check some detainees when I heard gunshots. I rushed out to be face-to-face with bandits in flowing caftans, and some in tattered army uniforms, shooting into the air and ordering us to come out and lie down on the road. “They then started throwing explosives into the police station. The ground was shaking. "They later moved to the bank (about 100 metres away) and started shooting and throwing explosives. Some of the robbers were standing over us, while the rest were at the bank. The unfortunate incident took place at the Makarfi Divisional Police Station located in the Makarfi Council of Kaduna State. Gunmen, numbering almost 30, raided the station and rubbished the policemen on duty. One of the police officer at the scene spoke with Vanguard. He said: “I don’t know the time they all left because they left one after the other. They may have been there for an hour. Later, we saw a military vehicle with soldiers and Mobile Policemen. We told them what happened and they drove eastwards, also shooting into the air,” he said.
“As far as I know, no one was injured, though they beat up some of us. I also heard they could not get any money from the bank. “I want you to please tell government to give us surveillance and communication equipment. We are just here facing danger everyday. If the armed robbers had wanted, they could have killed all of us, because they had better arms, and were more in number.”What a BIG shame, in Nigeria of 2013?! |   Africa's child ambassador, eleven year old Zuriel Oduwole, the Nigerian girl making the global case for educating the continents Girl Child and in the process, re-branding Africa, has been appointed an ambassador by Tanzania's First Lady. Zuriel was in the country last week - which was her second county stop on her East African leg to launch the acclaimed Dream Up, Speak Up, Stand Up project aimed at inspiring/encouraging African girls. On October 11th, Zuriel was in Dar Es Salaam to the attend the United Nations UNFPA event which focused on reducing the incidence of child marriage in Tanzania. After speaking at the event, she was formally invited to the office of the first lady Mrs Selma Kikwete (Zuriel pictured with the first lady above). Mrs Kikwete commended Zuriel for her leadership at such a young age, she also commended her for bringing issues of girl's education to several African leaders, then the first lady formally appointed Zuriel an ambassador for the largest foundation focused on gender issue - Wanawake na Maendeleo Foundation (WAMA) of which she's the founding patron. Zuriel was presented with an intricate 3 foot statue of unity, the same type presented to the US president, to symbolize the effect of Zuriel's in the lives of Africa's young women. #BeInspired. |  A Zimbabwean woman who Bosom fed a neighbour’s baby without her consent faces a possible two-year sentence for deliberately infecting another person with HIV after she tested positive. 39-year-old Annie Mpariwa appeared in court on Wednesday … the case was deferred to October 24 to allow a second HIV test to be performed on the toddler. The child’s initial results were negative. Mpariwa was arrested last week on charges of common nuisance and should the child test positive; the charge will be raised to “deliberately infecting another person with HIV”. The mother of the 14-month-old baby said seeing her child being Bosom fed by her neighbour was traumatising. She alleged that her neighbour snatched the child while she was playing outside and hid her in her room. After searching for the child for quite some time, she went and knocked on Mpariwa’s rented room and got no response. Upon peeping through the window, she saw her Bosom feeding the little girl. I was shocked. I nearly fainted,” she said, adding that her Bosom s were leaking milk yet she was not a nursing mother or pregnant. The incident comes in the wake of a newly enacted law on HIV and Aids that calls for stiffer penalties on people who deliberately infect others with HIV. OMG..discribe this woman in one word! Two years earlier, Justin's wife, Lauren Shelton, had had her own medical scare; her gallbladder had to be removed because of weight-related complications. At her heaviest, Lauren weighed 341 pounds. Their size made everyday tasks difficult, too. Years ago, Lauren was on a plane, and the seat belt wouldn't buckle. She was mortified and tried to hide from the flight attendants that she didn't fit into the seat. Both Lauren and Justin had been asked not to get on rides at a theme park because of their size. They were determined and with the right food and exercise it was done…..just 19 months, Justin dropped 362 pounds and Lauren lost 176, for a total of 538 pounds. |  The woman in question is identified as Asampete Fatima Usman, a graduate of the University of Maiduguri who lives and works in Abuja. Fatima hails from Hong city in Adamawa state. According to sources, depressed Fatima sent out an apparent suicide letter to a couple of friends on Facebook on the 1st of October 2013. In the suicide note, Fatima informs friends of her intention of killing herself but her friends thought she was joking. One of her friends who got the mail late was convinced that Fatima would kill herself for using the term “end it all” but she was pacified by those she told who assured her that perhaps she had read too much meaning into the mail….she let it be but alas a few days later on October 8, 2013 exactly 3 hours after her last Facebook post, people started commenting that she had died. To everyone’s surprise Fatima’s corpse was found by her family on the same day…. Alas she had killed herself. People should try to act on time anytime a message of this nature is received who knows if they had reached out to her, she wouldn’t have killed herself. |  Pilots of the Associated Airline plane that crashed last Thursday killing 15 people, were alerted about the plane’s faulty flight systems, but took off after briefly considering whether to abort the mission, the Accident Investigation Bureau, AIB, said Friday. The bureau, responsible for investigating aviation accidents, said initial review of the plane’s flight records showed that its captain, Yakubu Abdulrahman, received an automated signal ahead of take-off, which consisted of three chimes followed by “take-off flaps…take-off flaps.” “This is a configuration warning that suggests that the flaps were not in correct position for take-off. And there is some evidence that the crew may have chosen not to use the flap for take-off,” said Mukhtar Usman, Commissioner, Accident Investigation Bureau. Mr. Usman said the warning continued throughout the “take-off roll”. “Approximately three seconds after ‘power is set’ call, the First Officer noted that the aircraft was moving slowly,” he said. “At this time we can state that the Right engine appeared to be producing considerably less thrust than the left engine. The left engine appeared to be working normally,” Mr. Usman said. When the signal was received, he said, the First Officer suggested the pilot abort take-off. That was ignored. “The crew discussed some concerns about the aircraft prior to departure but at this time we are not prepared to elaborate on those concerns as there remains a lot of work to do to complete on the CVR analysis in order to determine the specific nature of the crew’s concerns,” he said. Mr. Usman spoke at the bureau’s head office in Abuja on Friday, more than a week after the airplane carrying the body of a former governor of Ondo state, Olusegun Agagu, crashed shortly after take-off. The plane carried 20 persons including crew and passengers. Five people survived the accident, including Mr. Agagu’s son, Feyi. The former governor’s body was later buried the next day in Akure, the Ondo State capital. The Accident Investigation Bureau said the plane’s Flight Data Recorder contains several engine related parameters which the AIB is reviewing.
