2  Forum / The Buzz Central / Advice : 4 Health Reasons You Should Take More Tapioca on: 9-10-2013 08:51 AM

Conventionally, tapioca, derived from the cassava plant, is best known as a creamy pudding dessert with little sustenance. However, in some in areas like Africa, Asia and South America, tapioca is known better for its nutritional benefits than as a sweet treat. When eaten raw or incorrectly prepared, the plant releases poisonous properties. Thus, tapioca must be prepared correctly to prevent harm and ensure safe eating.

1. STARCH EQUALS ENERGY The cassava plant is a root vegetable and a healthy source of carbohydrates. In many countries, it serves as a main dish because of its high starch content. Even better, it is considered a healthy starch because it is low in cholesterol and unhealthy fats. Tapioca can be included in dietary plans to promote healthy weight gain.

2. GLUTEN-FREE People suffering with Celiac disease or other conditions that restrict the use of gluten-based foods can use tapioca as an alternative to recipes that use wheat flour. Tapioca flour, which does not contain any gluten, is a healthier alternative to wheat flour. Both tapioca flour and tapioca starch can be used as a thickening agent in cream-based sauces and gravies.

3. MINERALS Calcium, phosphorous, potassium and magnesium can be found in tapioca in varying amounts. If you are preparing a more processed form of the root, like a pudding mix, you will receive a smaller amount of these minerals than if you were to consume tapioca starch or flour. Tapioca is also a good source of iron, and, in particular, dry tapioca pearls contain up to 13 percent of your daily value of iron. B-vitamins, including folic acid, which is extremely vital for pregnant women, are also found in tapioca.

4. DIETARY FIBER Over the years, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has placed extreme importance on the consumption of dietary fiber on a daily basis for a healthier lifestyle. The cassava root has a significant amount of dietary fiber in its natural form. According to the USDA, foods high in dietary fiber can help lower cholesterol, decrease the rate of colon cancer, and lower the risk of diabetes and heart disease.

4  Forum / The Buzz Central / Driver Cries For Help After Wife Gives Birth To Quadruplets on: 9-10-2013 07:49 AM

Independence
celebrations on
October 1 was for Lagos driver, Kehinde Tijani, and his wife Grace, a day
to celebrate the arrival of four babies in addition to the three they already
had. Grace was delivered of a set of quadruplets at Lagos University
Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Idi-Araba, Lagos.

Like most men have done in the past when blessed with such gift in their
financial state, Tijani did not abscond, but stood by his wife.
Kehinde, a driver and Grace, a small-time caterer were already living from
hand to mouth before the blessing of the newborns. They now have seven
children to cater for…they could barely feed the three they had.

The family who presently resides in a rented one-room apartment at
Ajangbandi in Okokomaiko, Lagos, expressed gratitude to God for the gift
of children, but expressed sadness and fear of an uncertain future
occasioned by poverty and hardship.
Kehinde, who hails from Oyo State, said he needs financial assistance to
take care of his wife and children.

“I need help. I am a driver. I started driving someone last year and my
monthly salary is so meager I can hardly feed three children not to talk of
seven.

“I need help please. I want the government and other people, who can, to
come to my aid. I don’t have money, I don’t have a house. I need about N1
million to take care of the medical bills of the children and their mother.
“My wife had two Caesarian Sections and since the birth of the babies last
week they have been in an incubator. Also, with the arrival of the
quadruplets, we need better accommodation for the children,” Kehinde
said.

The mother of the quadruplets, Grace, while speaking on the birth of her
babies said: “When I discovered that I wasn’t feeling too well, I went to a
private hospital, where they asked me to undergo scan.
“After the scan, they told me that I had fibroid. Then I came to LUTH and
after several tests and a scan, it was revealed that I was pregnant with five
babies.

“On hearing the news, I got really scared and depressed because of our
hard condition. Later, I had a partial miscarriage of one of the fetus
because of the fear and depression.

“I have been in the hospital since July. That was three months before I
delivered, because of my health conditions. All through this period, my
husband had to struggle to make ends meet.

“Things have been difficult as he only earns N30,000 monthly, and we had
three children before the arrival of these four.”
Grace from Delta state, said she has no history of multiple birth in her
family.

She said: “I have been married for 10 years now. It is only my husband
who is a twin. How can I take care of four babies at the same time?
“Please help us. The babies, three girls and a boy, have been placed in the
incubator.

“The first baby girl weighed about 1.65kg, the second girl, 1.50kg, third
girl 1.6Kg. The only boy tipped the scales at 1.45kg.”
Spokesperson for LUTH, Mrs Hope Nwawolo said the babies are in good
health and are medically stable.

been confiscated by officials of the State Environment and Special

were said to
have chased the ram sellers, who converged at Ijora-Olopa area, before
carting away their rams to an unknown detention centre.
The owners of the rams, who claimed they were unaware that the place

Mr. Olaide Agboola, Chief Superintendent of Police, who led the team,
however said the State Ministry of Agriculture had designated some
locations for sale of rams in the state.

Agboola said that he had sent some officers to Ijora on Sunday, who gave
the ram sellers a 24-hour deadline to vacate the place.

8  Forum / The Buzz Central / Resident Doctors To Continue Strike Until FG MeetsDemands on: 8-10-2013 08:12 PM

The National
Association of
Resident Doctors (NARD) on Tuesday said it would continue its indefinite
strike until its demands were met by the Federal Government.

The President of the association, Dr Jibril Abdullahi, said this in Abuja
when he briefed newsmen on the outcome of its National Executive Council
(NEC) meeting on Monday.
The meeting reviewed the ongoing nationwide strike by the association
which commenced on Oct. 1.

Abdullahi said that NEC, at the end of the meeting, demanded the immediate
payment of outstanding salaries and allowances of its members.

He said NEC also demanded the release and implementation of the
stakeholders’ agreement on residency training programme.

“We are not unmindful of the financial doldrums the country is facing. If
you bring forth the document, we will sit down and look at the financial
implication and we discuss.

“On the average, we spend N120billion annually on medical tourism. This
is a colossal drain on the economy and you cannot reduce this until you
strategise and develop the health care system.
“You can do that when you train the doctors and other health workers very
well”, he said.

He said that the blueprint for residency training would help to avoid
misunderstanding at different levels of implementation.
According to him, it will also help in minimising acrimony and industrial
disharmony between resident doctors and hospitals management.

The doctors went on strike over the non-payment of arrears of salaries of
some doctors for over four months by the Integrated Personnel and
Payroll Information System (IPPIS).

They are also demanding the training and retraining of resident doctors.

Abdullahi said the NEC also gave the Federal Government a four-week
ultimatum to investigate alleged victimisation of its members at the Federal
Medical Centre, Owerri.

He said the NEC also demanded the implementation of the Consolidated
Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) at the Enugu State University Teaching
Hospital. [NAN]

9  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Photos: Furious Girlfriend Makes Cheating Boyfriend KneelIn The Street While She Slaps, Humiliates H on: 8-10-2013 08:02 PM

A Chinese woman has been arrested after forcing her boyfriend to kneel in
the street and repeatedly slapping him around the face.
The assault happened last Friday in the Kowloon City area of Hong Kong,
after Chui, the boyfriend, took a girl to his flat despite the fact he was going
out with Cheng, the slapper.
Cheng got to find out and made her boyfriend kneel on the pavement in
full view of passers-by.
When he insisted he had not asked the girl to come to his flat, saying:
‘Listen to me first before beating me’, Cheng started slapping Chui across
the face as he screamed, ‘You’re slandering me!’, and urged the other girl to
corroborate his story.

A crowd of onlookers gathered and started filming the scene, which has
since been posted on YouTube.

As other bystanders started to intervene in the love quarrel, Cheng shouted,
‘None of your business!’
Most witnesses took Chui’s side, with one woman telling him: ‘Stand up,
ditch this ugly girl, you deserve better.’
One passer-by called the police, leading to Cheng’s arrest.
The 20-year-old woman, named Cheng, was later arrested on suspicion of
common assault, while the victim, 23-year-old Chui, was taken to hospital.
