1  Forum / The Buzz Central / Terrorism: Nigerian Army Acquires More Arms To Fight Boko Haram on: 26-11-2013 08:20 AM

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant
General Azubuike Ihejirika yesterday
said the Army authority has just
acquired a cargo of new arms and
ammunitions to fight terrorism.
The Army boss, who spoke at the
opening ceremony of the 2013
convention of the Nigerian Army
Regiment Sergeant Majors (RSM), said
Army’s equipment was not obsolete as
alleged.

Ihejirika who was represented by
Director of Administration, Army
Headquarters, Major General Mohammed
D. Abubakar, said, “many of our
armaments are current ones and more
armament are being procured. In fact, a
cargo had just arrived Abuja on Friday
with so many equipment for our use.
Over time, procurement of armaments
was slow, but of recent, we have
embarked on a lot of procurement to
enable us meet the challenges we are
facing.”
Addressing the RSMs drawn from all Army
divisions in the country, the Army Chief
said the theme of the convention,
‘Enhancing the Capacity of the RSM
Towards Effective Unit Administration in
the Nigerian Army’ was timely,
considering the nature of security
challenges the Nigerian Army was
grappling with, alongside the
expectation of the citizenry.

“The convention is therefore important
as you the RSMs are the bridge between
the officer cadre and the men. You are
the pivot around which discipline and
performance of the Nigerian Army
revolves. The main objective of the
convention is to provide an avenue for
Army Headquarters to obtain your views
and opinions on contemporary issues
affecting the Nigerian Army.
“Of utmost importance is the issue of
regimentation which is within your
schedule of responsibilities and has a
great effect on unit administration and
discipline. Your views would be collated
as inputs for formation or modification
of policy decisions,” he said.
He, however, tasked the RSMs to
participate actively and come out with
meaningful suggestions that will take
the Army to greater heights.

Earlier in his welcome, the General
Officer Commanding, 1 Division Nigerian
Army, Major General Garba A. Wahab,
noted that the convention was also
meant for the RSMs to brainstorm in
continuation of issues related to
regimentation and professionalism.
He concluded that the convention has
been a veritable ground for sharing
knowledge and ideas, and getting to
understand the seriousness of the
security challenges facing the country
and coming up with ideals to deal with
the challenges.
2  Forum / The Buzz Central / Terrible: 18-year-old boy in court for molesting 6-year-old girl in Edo on: 26-11-2013 08:08 AM

An Oredo magistrate court sitting in Benin
on Monday denied an 18-year-old boy who
defiled a girl of six bail.
The boy, Nwafor Chikwador, committed the
offence in July, 2013 in the apartment of
the girl’s parent in Oredo area of Benin
City.
Chikwador who has been on remand since
October 18, after his first arraignment, was
again ordered to be remanded in the
prisons by the magistrate.
Magistrate Peter Osemota said he would
only consider bail after hearing the
evidence of the child and the IPO.
The counsel to the accused, Mr F. O. Ogun
had applied for his client to be granted
bail.
The bail application was opposed by the
state counsel, Mrs Omosefe Wole-
Ehinimowo, on the ground of the gravity of
the offence.
She also argued that the bail be rejected
based on the fact that offence seemed to
be currently on the increase in the state
and across the country, adding that she also
opposed to the bail based on the strong
evidence against the accused.
The matter was, however, adjourned to
December 9, 2013 for further hearing.

3  Forum / The Buzz Central / Farmer, 24, arrested for beheading 11-month-old girl for rituals on: 26-11-2013 07:50 AM

The long arm of the law has caught up with,
Danladi Abubakar, a 24-year-old farmerwho
allegedly beheaded an 11-month-old  girl
for rituals in Fujeregi village, Gbako Local
Government Area, Niger State.
The State Criminal Investigation
Department, SCID, caught Danladi
and confessed that the dirty crime was to
fetch him a paltry sum of  N20,000. His
associate who contracted him for the
murderous deed, hails from Bida in Niger
State, is said to be on the run.

The Vanguard reports:

The farmer was said to have sneaked into
the room of the baby’s father, Malam
Mohammed Worogi, where he smuggled the
baby to a hidden place and beheaded her.
He also severed her private parts.
The sudden disappearance of the child soon
aroused the parent’s curiosity. The villagers
then constituted a search party but their
efforts did not immediately yield any
dividend until a special prayer was
organised.
After the prayers, Danladi came out  and
confessed to the crime.

The incidence was immediately reported at
the police divisional office in Lemu town
leading to Danladi’s arrest.
He was immediately charged to Minna
Magistrate Court 7 on one-count charge of
culpable homicide punishable under
Section 222 of the panel code law.
When the charge was read to him by the
presiding magistrate, Maryam Ladidi King,
he pleaded guilty.

8  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Nigerians should expect new naira notes before June 2014 — CBN on: 22-11-2013 05:04 PM
The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has
said that Nigerians should expect a new
generation of naira notes before the
second quarter of 2014.
Deputy Governor, Operations, Mr Tunde
Lemo, said the apex bank had earlier
announced its decision to move the local
currency from polymer back to paper,
but disclosed that all the notes in
circulation would not be withdrawn at
the same time.

“Nigerians will be having new generation
notes in paper in the next few months.
We will wait until the notes wear tear.
When they wear, and they travel back to
Central Bank, of course they will be re-
issued,” he stated.
According to him, the life cycle of a
note in Nigeria is between six months
and a year and if CBN took that decision
six months ago, “I reckon that in the
next three to six months, you will begin
to see these denominations re-appear in
paper.”
He said that, the
Central Bank would
have started producing the lower
denomination notes in paper by the
middle of last year, but due to logistics
challenges, the plan was not
accomplished.

“My plea is that Nigerians should be
patient with us. It wasn’t the fault of the
CBN; it is just because we have to go
back to the drawing board. We will
correct that in the course of the year.
Polymer certainly will be phased out. In
fact, no new note is being printed in
polymer now,” said Lemo.
On the scarcity of the lower
denomination notes, Lemo blamed
inflation and commercial banks for what
he called “low transactionary value” and
“poor circulation,” respectively.
“For the lower denomination, well, I
think the banks are really the ones that
are really not allowing the lower
denomination in circulation, largely,
because of the cost and carrying value.

“Most people don’t require small
denomination. But for buying things in
the market, if you look at the veracity,
you find out that it is the people that
are losing interest because of its
bulkiness and inflation,” he said.
Lemo said this should be done to ensure
effective protection of the currency
from abuse.
