5  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Plane Crash Averted By Luck In Abuja Airport Again on: 29-10-2013 02:01 PM

Another air disaster was averted at the Nnamdi Azikwe Airport in Abuja on Monday as a Med-View Airlines aircraft from Lagos suddenly took to the air again at the point of landing in Abuja. The pilot had announced final descent into Abuja and asked all passengers and cabin crew to fasten their seat belts but the pilot suddenly took off to the air again with barely 30 seconds to touch ground.

Panic immediately grip passengers who sort to know what was going on. Surprisingly, the pilot revealed that he immediately took to the air again to avoid a collision with another aircraft on the tarmac...

The airline Flight VL2104 took off from the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos at noon and was scheduled to land in Abuja at about 1.05pm. The plane had 150 passengers on board.

The aircraft was later granted clearance to land by the obviously incompetent people many the control room. It was later discovered that the other aircraft was not "fast enough", hence the delay.

You may wish to know that the aircraft hovered for another 20 minutes in the air before finally landing at about 1.30pm. While the drama lasted, the passengers were panic-stricken, especially when the plane entered into turbulent weather on air.

When the plane finally landed, passengers struggled to disembark. “Are you still sitting down? Let me rush down in case it will suddenly take off again,” a middle-aged man told one of the co-passengers.

7  Forum / The Buzz Central / Banky’s Grass To Grace Story:” ‘I begged to sell CDs in US salons to survive’ on: 27-10-2013 11:31 PM

Many see the glamour but are ignorant of the hard work and pains that preceded the fame of Nigeria’s rhythm and blues, R&B, superstar, Banky W. From an undergraduate begging for audience at salons in the United States, US, where his musical career started, 32-year-old Banky has built a musical empire that has produced internationally acclaimed artistes like Skales and Wizkid. Christened Olubankole Wellington, the Empire Mates Entertainment –EME- boss was born in the US to Nigerian parents who later relocated to Nigeria when he was five. It was after studying at the Home Science Association Secondary School, Lagos that he moved to New York to study industrial engineering on scholarship. With several albums to his credit, the manifold award-winner shares his story.

Starting small
His appearance bellies his personality and generally gives the illusion of a young man with a history devoid of sweat. But no, Banky did not only pay his due but also mastered certain principles which he wouldn’t forget in haste.

Menial jobs
Indeed his tale solidifies his emphasis on little beginning because to achieve his dream of becoming a music superstar, Banky had to take up to three jobs while also in university!

He said: “I worked in fast foods outlets, clothing stores and as a knife salesman, selling knives from door to door. That way, I gathered money to pay for studio recording time. I was recording with a close friend at that time.

Begging at saloons
“After making that music, we printed a thousand CDs though we didn’t have any fan. I had one battered car that broke down virtually everywhere, so, we would print black and white posters, stick them on the sides of the car, sell from the car’s trunk and drive to salons to do marketing. We would walk to the owners of the salons, greet politely, and ask them to let us entertain their customers. Sometimes, some would kick us out and sometimes some would say yes. If told yes, after singing for a minute or two, we would sell our CDs to the customers! That was the beginning!

“A lot of people see you on stage and see the success but do not know what you had to go through! I never had one really big break; it was always two steps forward and a couple backwards. But I just decided that I was going to make music work for me. That was why I moved on to a new salon each time any salon rejected me! I just kept going because I believe failure is when you give up. Albert Einstein said he tried a hundred times to make the light bulb. When he was asked what kept him going during the 99 times, he said: ‘I didn’t consider those 99 times as failure; rather, I considered them 99 ways that it didn’t work!’ We went about selling CDs and, on the days we couldn’t sell much, we would sit down and be broke together. I remember my friend was a member of a church that usually served food after service. So, on the days we didn’t sell CDs and were too broke to buy food, we would attend service in that church so we could pack rice and store in the fridge.

8  Forum / The Buzz Central / Jennifer Lopez: I Was Told to Make "All These Changes" to My Body Early on: 27-10-2013 11:27 PM

Jennifer Lopez recalls being told to make "all these changes" to her body early in her career in the winter issue of Cosmopolitan Latinas.Credit: Matthias Vriens-McGrath/Cosmopolitan for Latinas

Good thing she stood her ground! Jennifer Lopez's curvaceous body may be fully embraced and celebrated by Hollywood now, but that wasn't always the case. In the winter issue of Cosmopolitan for Latinas, the 44-
year-old singer says she's always been proud of her body and had to fight in her career to keep it.

"Early on, my family really made me love who I was and what I looked like. My body was nothing out of the ordinary in my neighborhood," explained Lopez, who grew up in The Bronx, New York with her Puerto Rican parents. "When I first started on television [as a Fly Girl on In Living Color], people, and even my own manager at the time, would tell me I had to make all of these changes."

"But you have to stand up and say, 'There's nothing wrong with me or my shape or who I am, you're the one with the problem!'" she says. "And when you can really believe that, all of a sudden other people start believing too."

The philosophy has helped her to juggle her career as a singer, actress, producer, American Idol judge and single mom to 5-year-old twins Max and Emme. How does she do it all?

"One day somebody told me I had to perform in front of 35,000 people on the set of Selena. I didn't know how to do it. I just said to myself: Don't think about it. You can do this and you'll be great," she recalls. "I walked out onto that stage. And then I did. I've been following that rule ever since."

Lopez, who has been dating her former backup dancer Casper Smart since October 2011 after splitting from husband Marc Anthony, tells the magazine that the best part of being Latina is having a passion for life. "I love the family that I grew up in," she says, "the strength and passion and the heart that we bring to things and then the way I was raised -- the intense love we demonstrate."

9  Forum / The Buzz Central / Suntai in Church, marks one-year air crash survival. Seeks Forgiveness on: 27-10-2013 11:09 PM

Suntai (middle) during the service

Recuperating Governor of Taraba State, Danbaba Danfulani Suntai caused an emotional scene when he stormed the Unity Chapel Church (UCC) in Government House, Jalingo for thanks giving at the weekend.
Suntai was pronounced dead when an aircraft he piloted crashed near Yola, the Adamawa State capital, on Thursday, October 25 last year.

He spent 10 months in Germany and United States hospitals for treatment, returning on August 25.
He wrote the House of Assembly of his readiness to resume duty but was stopped by the lawmakers on health grounds.
Last Friday was exactly one year since the governor and his Aide de Camp (ADC) Iliya Dasat, Chief Detail Joel Danladi and Chief Security Officer (CSO) Tino Dangana who were also on board the ill-fated Cessna 208 aircraft survived the air mishap.
The three aides who were treated in Germany were with the governor during the thanksgiving service. Also accompanying the governor were his wife Hauwa, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) GT Kataps and Chief of Staff, Aminu Jika, among other aides.
Suntai’s thanksgiving ceremony came a few days after he went out for a fishing expedition to shake off officialdom.
The congregation was all tears on seeing him. The tears of joy followed the governor’s speech, which turned out to be the morning sermon for the worshipers.
“I thank God that I survived the air crash to see this day. I am happy to reunite with you again,” Suntai said.
He thanked Taraba residents for their prayers on him which he said have helped him.
The governor preached forgiveness and asked everybody whom he said he may have offended to forgive him.
“Do not hold anything against your enemy or anyone at heart. For me and my family, we have forgiven all our adversaries,” he said.
Suntai said what God has done and shown him, even if he drops dead today (on Friday) he would die a fulfilled mortal.

11  Forum / The Buzz Central / Rap mogul breaks silence over Barneys racial profiling controversy. on: 27-10-2013 07:55 PM

Jay Z has finally spoken out about the controversy over incidents of racial profiling at Barneys department store, with whom he has a collaboration for a holiday clothing line, and few are impressed with what he has to say.

The mogul has been criticized for his long silence about the incidents, in which two Black students were harassed by Barneys salespeople and police after purchasing items at the upscale department store, and chose to respond in an unapologetic statement.

"Why am I being demonized, denounced and thrown on the cover of a newspaper for not speaking immediately?" Jay Z says in the statement. "I move and speak based on facts and not emotion," he continued. "I haven’t made any comments because I am waiting on facts and the outcome of a meeting between community leaders and Barneys."

Hov also refrained from either denouncing Barneys or pulling his business dealings with the store, claiming it will be his Shawn Carter Foundation, not he, who will suffer if he does. "I am not making a dime from this collection," Jay Z says. "This money is going to help individuals facing socio-economic hardships to help further their education at institutions of higher learning."

The indifference from the two young victims of Barneys profiling to Jay's response has been particularly scathing. "He’s a businessman,” says Selena Christian, mother of 19-year-old Trayon Christian who was arrested and detained without any probable cause after purchasing a $349 belt from the store. "He’s gonna do what he’s gonna do with his clothing line."

Says Kareem Vessup, lawyer for 21-year-old nursing student Kayla Phillips who was harassed by Barneys after indulging in a $2500 handbag, "Kayla appreciates that he’s trying to make a change, especially for those who are socio-economically challenged, but it shouldn’t be done at the expense of African-Americans — or any other minority for that matter — being racially profiled in the manner that she was treated." He continues, "the expectation is that once he’s aware of the reality of what Kayla Phillips went through, he’ll choose not to do business with Barneys any longer."

Over 13,000 people have signed a petition on Change.Org imploring the mogul to end his relationship with Barneys, and social media has reached a fever pitch on the topic.

While Jay seems to have no intention — as yet, anyway — of pulling his business, the rapper did offer some indirect words of sympathy for Christian and Phillips. "I am no stranger to being profiled and I truly empathize with anyone that has been put in that position," he says in the note.
