3  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Update From ASUU NEC Meeting Held Yesterday in Kano on: 23-11-2013 06:52 AM
It was gathered on Friday that members of the National Executive Council of the Academic Staff Union of the Universities again converged on Kano to deliberate on whether to call off their over four months old industrial action or not.

The NEC members, who gathered at the Bayero University, Kano, penultimate week to review the reports of the various university congresses over the strike, suspended the meeting following the death of Dr. Festus Iyayi. Iyayi, a University of Benin lecturer and former ASUU president, who died in an auto accident involving the convoy of the Kogi State Governor, Idris Wada, on his way to Kano to attend the NEC meeting.
There has been no date yet for the interment of his remains.
However, feelers from Kano on Friday indicated that the ASUU members went into hiding for the meeting.

One of our correspondents gathered that the NEC members, who reconvened in BUK, on Thursday, retired to a secret location for the meeting.
Reporters made frantic efforts to trace the venue of the meeting without success.

But many vehicles belonging to the members of the union were seen on campus. See Photo below;

But a member of ASUU NEC, who craved anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the development, confirmed to our correspondent that the union leaders were converging on Kano for the meeting.

According to him, though the union has lost a leading member and an academic, they were mindful of the feelings of the students and the public over the protracted industrial action.
He noted that all the union’s national officers as well as other branch chairmen had arrived at the ancient city for the assembly.
However, attempts by our correspondent on Friday evening to reach out to the University of Lagos chapter ASUU Chairman, Dr. Karo Ogbinaka, to confirm the meeting failed, as he did not pick his calls.

He also did not respond to the text message sent to his telephone.
Ogbinaka had earlier said the academic community was mourning Iyayi and so was not in a hurry to fix a new date for the NEC meeting.
The telephone line of the union’s National President, Dr.Nassir Fagge, also did not go through.
President Goodluck Jonathan had led a Federal Government team that met with the leadership of the union penultimate week.

Following the discussion, the FG reportedly promised to inject N220bn yearly into the public universities for the next five years. The new offer is to begin from 2014.
A majority of the chapters of the union had agreed on the suspension of the strike following the fresh commitment the leadership of ASUU obtained from the FG.

Teachers in the nation’s three but 78 public universities embarked on strike on July 1, 2013 to protest the failure of the FG to implement the agreement they signed with the authorities in 2009.
The pact largely centered on greater funding of the universities, a declaration of a state of emergency in tertiary education, better wages as well as payment of earned allowances to lecturers.

5  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Anambra Poll: Declare Obiano Winner or..., Igbos Threaten INEC on: 21-11-2013 08:11 AM

Despite the controversy trailing the November 16 Governorship election in Anambra State, more stakeholders have commended the election as one of the best to be conducted in the state and, indeed, the entire country.

Speaking on the matter, the Traditional Prime Minister of Igbo land, Chief Mike Ozua Okoye has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Governorship candidate, Chief Willie Obiano the winner of Saturday’s governorship election in the state.

Chief Okoye, who is also the Onowu Igbonine of Igbo land, described the victory of Chief Obiano at the polls as a clear manifestation of hard work and acceptance by the entire people of the state and called on INEC to declare him the winner of the election without further delay.
He expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the election which he said was the fairest and freest since the return of democracy in the country, adding that it was the only election where there was no report of violence or death throughout.
“I make bold to say that the last governorship election in the state was the best so in the history of Anambra State because there was no case of violence anywhere recorded and I want to use this medium to call on INEC to immediately without further delay declare Chief Obiano winner of the election having met all the constitutional requirements of number of votes cast.
“We are aware of some people who wanted to import an alien tradition and political party to Igbo land and the same people who are so desperate to hijack the election and rig it but our people have spoken through their votes in last Saturday election and so shall it be,” he said.
The Onowu Igbo further challenged all the aggrieved politicians and their candidates to go to court and prove their cases if they felt short changed in the election instead of constituting nuisance in the streets in the name of protests.
“They have been recruiting all manner of people and paid political jobbers to constitute nuisance in the streets in a planned protests in the name of protesting against the outcome of the election when they knew very well that Ndi Anambra have chosen their Governor.”
In his reaction, the traditional ruler of Awka, Obi Gibson Nwosu noted that the election was one of the most orderly, peaceful and violence free ever conducted in the state.
Obi Nwosu urged the contestants to toe the part of peace and those who felt genuinely aggrieved should follow normal procedure to seek redress in court.  He reminded them that Anambra as the Light of the Nation should set example for others.

Also speaking, the Igwe of Agulu, HRH, Igwe Innocent Obodoakor also commended the peaceful nature of the election and described it as one of the best to be conducted in Nigeria.  He advised those making careless and unguarded statements against the election to stop over heating the polity and to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship.

Commending security agents, he said that some of those that planned rigging, but were prevented from doing so by security agents were the ones crying the lousiest, not out of love for free and fair election, but out of regret that they were prevented from carrying out their evil plans.

In her own contribution, the President General,  Association of Town Unions, Women Wing, Dr. Mrs. Chinelo Okechukwu said the election fulfilled all requirements of the Electoral Act which the outcome reflected the mandate of the people.  Dr. Mrs. Okechukwu observed that those calling for cancellation were pursuing selfish interest.

Wondering while the problems during elections are always localized in Idemili Local Government, she said that obviously somebody must be behind it. He expressed satisfaction that the problems identified were not enough to question the sanctity of the process, not to talk of calling for its cancellation.

7  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Latest On ASUU Strike: ASUU NEC Meeting Now To Hold On Friday, Nov 22nd on: 18-11-2013 08:11 AM
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may hold its postponed National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Friday to decide whether or not to suspend the indefinite strike it began since July 2.

A top official of ASUU, who preferred anonymity, disclosed this to Daily Independent in a telephone interview on Sunday.
He was, however, not certain if the NEC will still be held at the Bayero University, Kano where it was initially proposed to hold.

The leadership of the union postponed the scheduled Kano NEC meeting following the demise of one its key members, Festus Iyayi, who died last Tuesday in a ghastly motor accident on his way to Kano for the postponed NEC meeting.
The source noted that the union members are still grieved and are pre-occupied with the burial arrangement of the late Professor of Business Administration, who died along the Abuja-Lokoja highway in an accident caused by the convoy of Kogi State Governor, Idris Wada.
The source debunked speculations in the social media that ASUU has jettisoned its NEC indefinitely, saying the union postponed the NEC meeting as a mark of honour and respect for the late Iyayi.
According to him, all ASUU officials that were supposed to participate in the NEC meeting last week Wednesday had actually gathered at the Bayero University, Kano, but for the unfortunate accident which claimed the life of Iyayi and disrupted the agenda already set for the meeting.
Meanwhile, Supervisory Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, also at the weekend led a delegation of government on a condolence visit to the residence of the late academician in Benin City.
Wike assured that the Federal Government would diligently implement all the agreements it reached with ASUU in the course of the negotiations with President Goodluck Jonathan.
Those in the delegation of the minister include Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Julius Okojie, and some top officials of Federal Ministry of Education.
They also visited the injured ASUU National Welfare Officer, Ngozi Iloh, who is said to be responding to treatment at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin.
In a statement in Abuja on Sunday, the Minister’s Special Assistant (Media), Simeon Nwakaudu, said Wike solicited the permission of the family to allow the Federal Government participate in the burial ceremony of the former ASUU president.
“President Goodluck Jonathan and the entire administration are deeply pained by the sudden death of the former ASUU National President who played a key part in the negotiations between ASUU and the Federal Government.
“We recall the significant contributions of Professor Iyayi during the 13-hour negotiations between President Jonathan and ASUU, which led to a headway in the discussions.
“I want to assure the family that the ideals that the late scholar fought and died for will never be forgotten. The Federal Government will diligently implement the decisions reached in the course of negotiations with ASUU.
“The Federal Ministry of Education wishes to be a part of the burial of this erudite scholar and we seek the permission of the family to participate in the burial. I pray God to grant the family the strength to bear this unfortunate loss,” Wike was quoted to have said.
Oriabure Iyayi, son of the late ASUU president, was said to have thanked President Jonathan, the Minister of Education and all Nigerians for commiserating with the family at their moment of grief.
A relative of the deceased, Prof. Robert Ebiwele, informed the minister that the burial will hold between December 5 and 9.
He assured that the family would inform the Federal Ministry of Education on the burial arrangements.

8  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Shameful Video that Shows How Women Only Care About Money, Cars and Gifts on: 8-11-2013 06:39 AM

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWvH7jEpMdA" target="_blank" class="aeva_link bbc_link new_win" rel="nofollow">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWvH7jEpMdA</a>

This video is ridiculous and shames women everywhere. When four guys test out a social experiment to see if ladies go for who they are or what cars they have, the results are alarming.
Apparently, a 2013 Ferrari will get women to ditch their friends, dignity and even their boyfriends for a ride. What this video really proves is that if you have money, you can get women. It doesn’t matter if you are the biggest douchebag or creeper in the world, if you pull up next to a girl and ask her to get into a Ferrari, she will jump right in. Pathetic.

Quote
Many young black women these days do not care about anything more than how much you have in your bank account—and they certainly do not care about the source of what is in your bank.
Probably, life is exceptionally difficult for these women compared to how we are all struggling to meet the needs of the next day. I can clearly understand why life would be harder for some black women who have placed themselves into a barrel full of ignorant wants—from expensive bags to weaves.
I was introduced by a friend to her mate, a young woman who was also  looking for a Ghanaian out here in United States for a possible relationship. I’ve been opened to all forms of finding a partner. And I’ve tried Online Dating, Speed Dating and even Hook Ups, which this was one of the few Hook Ups opportunities that came my way  late last year.
Through the work of my female friend, I received my first text message from Agnes. At the time I was introduced to Agnes who was taking up a part time class in College to help her with job security, I had just finished my masters degree— and had just started my own small business…
We had long conversations through countless text messages and each day, I made it a point to call her at least once to hear her voice and find out how her day and job hunting was going.
From our conversation, I quickly noticed Agnes loves good things—but then again who does not love good things in life as long as the person can afford it.
Agnes had a travel dream and wanted to see the world, which I told her it is possible as long as she works towards it. But I was wrong; she wanted someone to finance it for her. There was no way she was ready to pay for this so before we even met in person, she suggested I take her to Paris on her upcoming birthday.
She was nice to talk to, and was pretty much looking forward to meeting her in person as the many photos we exchanged did not give me an insight into her personality. I could see from the photos she loved her long nails, long weaves and long heels. Probably, she loved it all long and even joked in one of her text messages that, she loves men with long tails—this is something I am blessed with so was more of a fall in the right spot for me.

Throughout our conversation, Agnes tried so hard to cunningly find out my financial status by asking me fishy questions. Cleverly, I avoided most as I believe money should not be a pull factor when looking for REAL love.
On several occasions, she asked me to buy her calling cards to call her people back home as the nearest shop is a little far from her.  It did not matter much to me as several 10 bucks were not going to break my account.  Each time I bought it, I told myself this girl must be interested in getting stuff off men.
Just a day before our meeting following our 2 months of long conversations, she asked; what sort of car do you drive? Before I answered, she added; If a man does not drive, there is no way I am going to date him as I can’t afford to be catching the trains and buses in my long heels after a dinner out.
At this stage, I realized Agnes did not only care about what car I drove but then a man with a car is on her list of things she looks for in a relationship…
I told her the truth, I drive a BMW…And asked; what about you?
I knew she did not have a car because I’ve spoken to her on multiple occasions when she was on the bus from church or from a friend’s house.  She replied by saying, I don’t have a car yet but my first car will be a Lexus…
She killed my zeal to meet her and the next morning, I texted her to cancel our date, citing a business meeting as the reason.
Why can’t some black women look beyond material things when looking for a partner in life?
