The New Peoples Democratic Party said on Wednesday that it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the All Progressives Congress.
When and where the MOU was signed as well as its content were not made public by the National Publicity Secretary of the New PDP, Chukwemeka Eze, in a text message he sent to one of our correspondents.
The PUNCH however learnt in Abuja that both sides agreed that the five PDP governors who defected to the APC on Tuesday, would control the structures of the party(APC) in their states.
The five governors, also known as rebel governors, are Muritala Nyako(Adamawa), Rabiu Kwakwanso (Kano), Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara), Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), and Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto).
It was also gathered that the rebel governors and leaders of the New PDP would play active roles in the emergence of the APC presidential candidate in 2015.
Both parties, investigations revealed, also decided that the New PDP members would be actively involved in the APC convention.
A source in the APC said that both sides agreed that the party would face some challenges in Sokoto and Kano states.
In Sokoto, an APC chieftain, Attahiru Bafarawa, is an arch rival of Wamakko.
Both sides were said to have agreed that a committee of elders should be set up to reconcile them.
In Kano, a former Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari, would reconcile an ex- governor of the state, Ibrahim Shekarau and his successor, Kwakwanso.
Our source said, "We have agreed that the New PDP governors would control the APC structures in their states. For Kano and Sokoto, we will reconcile the governors and their predecessors."
When contacted, Eze said the meeting at the Kano Governor's residence in Abuja on Tuesday, was a sign that the New PDP and the APC had agreed to merge.
Eze had earlier said on Wednesday that the APC and New PDP would on Tuesday next week sign the MOU , which would contain their power-sharing arrangement.
But he later corrected himself in a text message to one of our correspondents, saying he had been directed to inform the media that the agreement had been signed.
He said, "Please, I have just been corrected by our National Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Baraje that the MOU has been signed and that the merger has been effected. So, my former statement should be ignored."
Eze also said that members of the New PDP would attend a peace meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday.
It was gathered that some of the aggrieved governors were not keen on being present at the Sunday meeting.
While the leadership of the New PDP said it had asked the rebel governors to honour the invitation, some of them (governors) said they would not attend .
But Eze said the New PDP leadership had encouraged its members to attend.
According to him, by virtue of the fact that aggrieved members of the PDP are Nigerians and Jonathan, the President, they will honour his invitation to the meeting.
He said,"We have respect for the office of the President (it is not about Jonathan as an individual).
"We have asked our governors to attend the meeting with the President, if he invites them.
"That we have an understanding with the APC at the moment does not mean that Jonathan is our enemy.
"He is still our father. He is still our President. It is not a meeting that anybody will stay away from, and we will attend.
"By Sunday, we are to meet with Mr. President. We will listen to him and by Monday, we will be holding a meeting."
The governors, however, differed on the issue.
The Niger State Governor, Babangida Aliyu, who had on Tuesday insisted on remaining in the PDP, expressed willingness to attend the meeting. But his counterparts in Kano, Adamawa, Sokoto and Rivers were non-committal.
When contacted, the spokesman for Aliyu, Mr. Danladi Ndayabo, simply said,"Yes, His Excellency will be in attendance."
His colleague in Kano, Baba Dantiye sent a text message which reads, "I will check his dairy and revert."
But Nyako, who spoke through his Director of Press and Public Affairs, said, "Has the President honoured the previous meeting he called? That question (will Nyako attend the meeting) is more appropriate for the President."
On his part, Amaechi said he would not be a part of the meeting.
The governor, in a text message to one of our correspondents, said,"no"!.
Also, the Chief of Staff Government House, Port Harcourt, Chief Tony Okocha, told The PUNCH that he (Amaechi) travelled out of the country.
Okocha said the governor would be speaking at the Committee of the House of Commons in England on peace and security in the Niger Delta .
"The governor is not in town. He travelled out of the country. Though I have not seen the invitation, based on the reason I have given, the governor will not be able to attend the meeting with the President."
The Sokoto State governor, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko, is still outside the country and may not return before the meeting.
However, the Presidency said despite the defection of the five aggrieved governors, Jonathan was still favourably disposed to meeting them.
The Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Mr. Ahmed Gulak, said this in an interview with one of our correspondents .
Gulak said as the leader of the country, Jonathan was open to all Nigerians irrespective of their political leanings.
The presidential aide said, "Despite the fact that they have announced their decisions to join the APC, the President can still meet with them whenever they request it.
"Even if the APC national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, writes the President, seeking to meet him on politics and national issues, Dr. Jonathan will oblige him and listen to him.
"Since they have shown their desire to still meet the President, he will meet with them.
"You know that even the meeting that was supposed to hold last Sunday was initiated by them. They wrote the President, seeking resumption of the peace talks that were suspended ahead of Muslim and Christian pilgrimages."
Gulak did not however say whether the President would reconsider his stand on some of the conditions given by the governors in view of the latest development.

At least 51 suspected members of the Boko Haram terrorists group were yesterday shot dead as a result of military attacks on camps along Damboa- Gwoza road of Borno State, military sources have said.
The attack which involved both land and air raidstook place at Bita village near Damboa town, 85km away from Maiduguri, Borno State capital.
According to the usually credible security source, which disclosed the information, the military raid started on Sunday and ended on Tuesday.
It also said soldiers of the 7 Division, Nigeria army acted on a tip-off that the terrorists were camping in bushes around Bita village.
The source called the launched attacks successful.
The Spokesman of the 7 Division, Col Muhammed Dole, could not respond to email enquiry sent him for confirmation of the incident.
But the state deputy governor, Zanna Mustapha, who visited the troubled Gwoza area along side the General Officer Commanding 7 Division, Major General Obidha Ethan without media coverage, came back very late on Tuesday, held a marathon closed door meeting at the office of the deputy governor almost the whole day yesterday.

A family court sitting in Ikeja Magistrate Court, Lagos, will today, resume hearing in the charge of defilement of a two and half years old child (names withheld) against one Kehinde Layode.
According to Access to Justice, AJ, a non-governmental organisation, handling the matter, "on November 11, 2013, we received information that a girl (names withheld) (two and a half years old at the relevant time), was segxwally molested by a man, Kehinde Layode, who had been put in a position of trust over the child.
According to the family, the mother of the girl had kept the child with the defendant and his wife to go and buy drugs for the toddler as she was running a fever.
"This was a fairly routine help that the girl's mother often sought and the defendant and his wife offered. However, on this fateful day when the girl's mother returned to the house, she knocked on the door but the defendant told her that she was sleeping.
"The mother, however, insisted that the door be opened so that she could administer the drug she had bought.
Subsequently, she took the toddler home but noticed that there was a thick white fluid coming down her laps at which point she raised an alarm.
"The alarm attracted neighbours, who insisted that she report the matter to the police and take her for medical examination, which she did. The case was reported to the Igando Police Station and the police have, after investigations, launched a prosecution against the defendant.
"The case is presently before Mrs A. Oshoniyi of the magistrate sitting at Family Court, Ikeja Magistrate Court, Lagos State.
"The charge against the defendant is that of defilement of the little child by having segxwal intercourse with her on January 12, 2013."

33-year-old Biola Gbadamosi, has been arrested by the police for allegedly murdering her husband, Jamiu, in Ikorodu , Lagos state.
According to the police, the suspect, who is a nursing mother, stabbed her husband with a knife during an argument over rice.
It was gathered that the suspect and her husband, a Vehicle Inspection Officer have a history of domestic violence.
Biola, who claimed to be an Ordinary National Diploma degree holder from Ibadan Polytechnic was in tears while speaking stated she had no intention of killing her husband, saying she only stabbed him once on the thigh.
She said,"Jamiu and I dated for four years, but when I got pregnant this year, we did introduction and I started living with him in Idi Iroko, Ikorodu. However, when I was three months pregnant, he started beating me.
"Most times, he takes alcoholic drink and he comes back home drunk and starts beating me for flimsy reasons. He even had a kidney ailment.
"One day, he came home drunk, accused me of infidelity and started beating me. He said he had been told that I was going to poison his food, but I continued to endure. I, however, reported the beatings to his mother and siblings."
The suspect said after being delivered of a baby in August, she usually went to her family's house in Somolu from where she would take her baby for post-natal.
She said on September 7, 2013, she returned home with her baby only to have a fight with her husband hours later.
She said,"While I was about leaving my parents' home, my husband called to say that he was broke and I should make money available for the weekend. When I got home, I started cooking fried rice but my husband, who was drunk, said he did not like it. I jokingly called him a bush man and an argument ensued.
"While we were arguing, a neighbour, who sells drinks, came into our flat to collect money that we owed her. I was grating carrots with a knife when my husband slapped me and said I must leave his house that night.
"I used the knife I was holding to strike him on the thigh and he started bleeding profusely. The neigbours and I took him to a hospital. At the hospital, I was told that my husband's injury was not deep, so neighbours said I should take my baby home."
The suspect told PUNCH Metro that the next morning; the landlord informed her that her husband died at midnight.
"The matter was reported at the Owutu Police Division and I was arrested,"she said.
She pleaded with the police to show her mercy, saying,"My little baby, Oluwaseyifunmi, is with my husband's family and I fear that my child will never get to know me if I am sent to prison. My Bosom s are still filled with milk and no baby to suckle them."
When our correspondent visited the scene of the incident, the landlord, Theophilus Kalejaiye, said the couple had a history of violence.
Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone, said the matter had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba for further investigation.

A 22-year-old man, Eji Emmanuel, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for the alleged murder of a 39-year-old trader, Sylvanus Okoye.
According to the police, the suspect stabbed the deceased to death at his home on Ezemegbu Drive, Okota in August.
The suspect, however, explained that he killed the deceased in self-defence. He alleged that on the day of the incident, Okoye had attempted to rape him.
Explaining the events that culminated in Okoye's death, the suspect said he was a dancer and was lured to Lagos by a friend, Chukwudi, under the guise of doing music business only for the friend to introduce him to homosegxwality.
He said he had gone to report the matter to his friend's boss but his friend's boss molested him twice and he reported the matter at the FESTAC Police Division. He said the matter was transferred to the Zone 2 Police Command and the case was turned against him after which he spent two weeks in detention.
He said he had approached Okoye, who he considered an Igbo leader in the state, to help him with money to return to Anambra State when Okoye also attempted to rape him.
He said, "I went along with a relative to report the matter to Okoye and he gave my friend and I N5,000 and shirts. He told us not to worry, so we slept over at his house. At midnight, however, Okoye came to my room and attempted to made love with me but I refused him.
"My relative later told me that Okoye had sex with him in the parlour that same night. We left in the morning and returned to Anambra State. From there, I went to Abuja where I remained for four months. However, one day, Okoye called me that he had a business deal and invited me to come to Lagos.
"I told Okoye that I would not engage in any act of homosegxwality and he agreed."
The suspect said when he returned to Lagos, the deceased said he wanted to open a bar in the area and wanted him to manage the business. He said he passed the night at the deceased's home, but at midnight, the deceased crept into his room and attempted to make love to him.
He said, "In the evening, Okoye served me with bread, butter and tea in my room. Around 3.30am, he crept into my room and wanted to sleep with me, but I refused him.
"Okoye was a big man so he attempted to overpower me, but I picked up the bread knife that was still left in the room and stabbed him in the neck, but he did not die.
"I picked up a flexible iron and bound it round his neck and locked him inside the room.
"When it was 6am, I stepped out of the house and gave the key to one woman beside the gate and fled."
The security guard and the woman whom the suspect handed the key to were arrested by detectives at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba and after three months, detectives were able to locate the suspect in Anambra State.
A police detective said, "The security guard told us that he could identify the suspect if he saw him.
"In the course of investigation, we obtained call logs from Okoye's phone and we learnt that the suspect had used Okoye's phone to call his girlfriend in Anambra State shortly after killing Okoye. We travelled to Anambra State and we were able to locate the suspect who was even wearing the deceased's clothes."
The suspect, however, insisted that he was not a killer but a victim of circumstance.
He said, "My father and my brother are dead. I am the only child of my mother. Who will take care of her if I am sent to prison? I am not a homosegxwal but I was used. I tried for several months to impregnate my girlfriend but was not successful. I feel they have stolen my virtues."
Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, confirmed Emmanuel's arrest, adding that the police were still working to establish it the the victim was a homosegxwal or not as alleged by the suspect.

Abiodun Ogunjobi, otherwise known as , the dreaded one-eyed robbery czar who terrorized Lagos and other South-West states, killing no less than 50 policemen while raiding several banks, businesses and homes, for over 14 years reveals details of his life.
He disclosed that he almost quit robbery in 2011,speaking at the state Police Command headquarters, Ikeja, where he is currently being detained following his arrest by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, led by SP Abba Kyari, on August 1.
Godogodo said that he wanted to stop robbing after building two houses and setting up 50 fishponds, valued at about N16 million, in Ikorodu area of Lagos.
He added that he also travelled to Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, to buy clothes whose sales would keep him busy when he is not on his fish farm.
However, his dreams got dashed when an operative of SARS, who had been on his trail for long, got an intelligence report on his location and traced him to his mansion.
Relocation to Ibadan
It was gathered by the journalists that the operative met a member of one land-owning family, locally known as omo-onile in the area and made him take an oath not to reveal his mission to anyone.
But the omo-onile informed Godogodo of the presence of a SARS operative in search of him and he quickly fled Ikorodu and relocated to Ibadan where he built two more mansions.
The source said,
"He met a young man, an omo-onile, in Ikorodu who showed him Godogodo's house but he was not in. Only his wife was around. "The operative paid the omo-onile to keep watch on Godogodo's house and report to him whenever he sets his eye on him, but news got to him (Godogodo) that a police undercover operative was in town looking for him. He fled without packing his property."
I built 52 fish ponds
As Godogodo further narrates, in 2008 he finished building his own house in Ikorodu and managing a good business for his wife. After doing so he wen into fish farming and built about 52 ponds, making good money from them.
"I usually sell each pond between N600,000 and N800,000 and it took me four months to grow fingerlings into a maturity for sale. The business was moving smoothly and I had over 15 people working for me at the pond.
I was still going for robberies
However, he continued robbing, while the business was on.
"But in 2011, I decided to quit. I gave all my rifles, they were nine in number, to my boy, Tosin, who resides at Ajah and I stopped going for robberies."
According to Godogodo, the man came to him and said SARS operative had been in town looking for him.
"The omo-onile explained that the operative dropped a live bullet into a cup of gin and made him swear an oath that he would not reveal his mission to anyone and he should also inform him upon my return.
"The moment I heard this, I knew there was trouble and my cover had been compromised, because nobody knew where I lived, including my gang members. I quickly moved out of the house and I went to Ajah to relax before I contacted my wife and asked her to leave the house without picking anything."
How I went back to my gang
The people running the Godogodo's ponds were no longer remitting money, because they hear that the police were after him.
"At that point I was left with no option than to go back to my gang. After some few bank robberies in Osun and OndoStates, I made huge money which I used to buy the land at Ibadan before I started building on it. But after that,I became more vicious and I made sure that I took part in all major operations within the South-West."

Very touching story of a young man’s devastating experience with armed robbers, an experience that left him fighting for his life. Read below;

I SUDDENLY FELT DRENCHED IN WATER…BUT AS I LOOKED DOWN ALL I SAW WAS BLOOD THEN I REALIZED THAT HALF OF MY FACE WAS HANGING OPEN.
Ok, so it’s been a year since I was attacked by armed robbers and shot In the face, and I really want to tell it, as much as it may hurt.
It was a dinner party and award night organized in my University. Being one of the foremost artist in the state I was nominated, so I had to grace the event. To God’s glory I won the award for Best music Artiste. After performing, taking pictures and exchanging pleasantries I opted to leave.
This was because my final degree exams were just a week from that time. And I didn’t see myself partying when I had such important exams, besides my house was a stone throw away. I left alongside my friend, a musician called “Nero” his girlfriend and also another friend “princess” who needed to sleep as well. Nero and his girlfriend took their route home and i went my way. I remember not long after, princess and i were talking about churches and pastors. At this point we were in front of St. Joseph the worker Catholic church, Awka (right opposite the blessed sacrament) when it happened.
I looked back and saw a bike pulling up towards us. It carried three men; the rider and two passengers. The last one dropped and speedily approached us pointing a shot gun. He growled two words at me. “The phone”. My phone was in the right pocket of my shorts. I pulled it out and gave it to him immediately, I still remember seeing the man force down a laugh at the speed at which I handed the phone over. He looks at the girl and sees that  she was wearing a dinner gown and had her shoes in her hands, so i guess he could tell she wasn’t with anything else. He quickly got on the bike and they reversed and left. Not to far from me again they stopped and another one came down; this one was fair and tall, clad in a yellow shirt and black jeans. I did not see his face properly. He started walking towards us.
The one who had robbed me called out to him. “Guy wetin happen, make we dey go na, ka anyi wa here!”
But he kept coming and the others zoomed off. At that same time a popular comedian in Awka, a good  friend, Limo, drove into the street with some other guys in the car.
The thief stopped walking but did not go back. Limo, recognized me and stopped immediately. Asking me why I was there and I told him I had just been robbed. From there all I could remember was looking at the thief and seeing a flash of white light. A sound echoed in the street and as I was wondering what made the sound, I felt drenched in water down to my feet…but as I looked down I notice that It wasn’t water but blood, the blood was hot, half of my face was hanging open and the pain that followed was excruciating. I can’t even begin to explain it.
But I didn’t fall, nor did I die, not even go unconscious. God, stood in my place. God showed me his face, his LOVE!
Next thing I know it was raining blood. The thief had run into a pathway that made it impossible for the car to chase him. I began to chase after the car calling for help. I could hear someone telling him to drive faster, but he told them “na my guy be dis, I no fit leave am”.
God bless his soul he stopped. My face was shattered and I was losing a lot of blood. I begged to be taken to a hospital, but I could hear their shock at the sight of all that blood. Finally with my direction; (and trust me, I HAVE NO IDEA HOW I WAS ALIVE TO BE DOING ALL THAT, IT WAS GOD) Limo started towards the hospital. On the way one of his back tires burst for no reason at all. Luckily there was another student party at a hotel close by. He stopped there. I begged that we should continue because the hospital was close by but Limo said that driving like that was very risky. They pulled me out of the car and lay me in front of the hotel, Sun City hotel, Awka. There was a bus there but when they asked the driver for help, he said the bus was bad, but as they ran Into the hotel to get help, the man drove off.
I was there on the floor for a while, I was getting weaker but wouldn’t give in to sleep. I watched as the blood from my face and head soaked the grass as it had soaked me already. My watch was In the blood and I could see the time read.

When I close my eyes I can still see the watch count that time. I only thought of three things then. My mother and siblings. And how I would never put a smile on their faces again. My music, I would never get to make music the world would listen to and love.
And the clouds, I would miss them if I died, they are beautiful. God’s artistry.
Then they came. The students there had had to force a driver to help and so I was taken to Regina Caeli hospital Awka. When we arrived. The nurses asked for the sum of #1500. After it was paid they said it was for card. And requested #10000 plus police report. The students didn’t have up to that and so they left me there for death I guess.
I could hear the nurses discussing about the soups they had prepared the other night while I lay there, losing blood. By then I had given the people around my sisters’ number. They had called and soon after contacts had been made, the anti cult of both Unizik and ANSU had showed up alongside the police.
The money was paid and report given since they all confirmed that I was not a cultist. But all the hospital staff did was take an xray and wrapped my face in bandages. By this time I realized that I couldn’t breath anymore, because my nostril had burst and breathing meant taking in bad blood into my mouth and system.
The x-ray showed that the shot gun bullet which consisted of an average of 40 pellets all got into my face. One made it to my brain through my right eye. But I was there, alive. It was impossible. God’s mercy was overwhelming, God loves me!
4 hours later I was still losing blood. The hospital finally said I should be transferred to Nnewi because the case was complicated for them. By 8:00 am or so they moved me to NAUTH Nnewi. But on getting there I wasforgotten in the ward due to the numerous patients. Finally with some contacts they came to attend to me. I was still losing blood by now, almost 8 hours. They came and finally stopped the bleeding partially. But said I had to be moved to Onitsha because of the eye had been injured and this left an open wound to the brain. On the way to Onitsha, (I was taken their by my university’s dean of students affairs) I vomited blood for almost three minutes. It had gone into my system by way of my shattered nostril. It was until I got to Guinness hospital Onitsha  that I got any real treatments. By then I had been in pain and loss of blood for over 10 hours. But to the Grace of God I was getting stronger, nobody could believe it.
Neither could i. But when God works men marvels. I got treated and had 2 major surgeries the following day.
From the hospital bed I wondered how I had ever offended anybody in my life. I wasn’t a cultist. I had never had girl issues with anybody. No fights. Or did the guy just decide to shoot me for fun?  I wished I had chosen to grind and party instead of going home to read. But I knew better. God had a plan for me. The professor that operated on me said my case was like that of a Tv that was still working even when there was no power supply. Six days later by the grace of God and against doctors advice I decided to go write my degree exams.The bullets, 36 were still in my face, I could not open my mouth or eat. But in few days God worked wonders.
I showed up for my exams and wrote them and passed real fine amidst all the rumours going around. I graduated.
My birthday was the week after this.

Six suspected pipeline vandals were apprehended in Sagamu area of Ogun state. Salami Amodu, 65, Bruce Ekonen, Joseph Ofoeyeno, Francis Ode, Bruce Ekonen and Kola Ifatoye were arrested with about 100 gallons of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). They allegedly vandalized Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) pipeline at Idimagboro.

Salami Amodu, 65, who was, along with others arrested by operatives of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Special Task Force on Anti-Pipeline Vandalism Unit, had this to say:
"I was on my way home when a man, popularly known as Alfa, stopped me. He promised to pay me N5000 per trip if I can help him to carry 10 gallons of liquid. I thought it was water, so I did not bother to ask, since it's a good business. It is possible that the water could be anointed since he was ready to pay as much as N5000.
"It was while we were on our way that I started to perceive the odour of fuel. I asked him and he told me that it was fuel. I was so annoyed and I shouted at him for not telling me in the first place what was in the gallons. Initially, I wanted to stop the car and ask him to off load the vehicle, but when I realized that we were almost close to his destination, I decided to continue. I am aware that vandals normally pass through that route that was why I was very angry with him.
"In that area, people go for prayers. Clerics come to that area to buy holy water to perform miracle. Most of the times when I am done with the day's job, especially if I did not make much money, I will go down to the bush area to see if there is anyone who needs lift. I also ensure that I do not carry vandals because those days when I used to help them, it landed me into trouble with security men. Although, there is money to make in that business but the risk is much. This was why I stopped a long time ago till Alfa deceived me into carrying fuel for him.
"I am very sorry. It is of no use denying that I was not involved because I was caught with the product. Life has been unfair to me if not, at this age, why should I be hustling for money to feed and take care of my family. I am very sorry."
Another suspect, Joseph Ofoeyeno, claimed that his duty was just to transport the stolen products from the bush to the buyers:
"Initially I was buying directly from NNPC staff close to the depot. Normally, NNPC staff will overload their trucks and sell the excess to us before preceding to off- load the rest for the buyer. The place was however shot down when there was a fire outbreak. I had no choice than to patronize these vandals. I am sorry and I wish NNPC will be allowing those their truck drivers to carry excess."
Bruce Ekonen stated he actually went to the bush to see a cleric for the gift of the fruit of the womb: "I have been married for the past 8 years and my wife has not been able to conceive. I have tried my hands on different women outside but none has ever returned with the good news that she is pregnant.
"I was actually on my way when I saw Francis and asked him for a lift. We were on our way to town when the police arrested us. I was looking for the fruit of the womb not stolen fuel. I was even advising Francis to stay away from illegal business of selling stolen product when the police arrested us."
Confirming the arrest, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Friday Ibadin, who is in charge of the Task Force, said, "Detectives led by Sector Commander, Lagos, DSP Onaghise Osayande, laid ambush and nabbed these suspected vandals. It is worthy to remind Nigerians that ignorance is not an excuse. Both the seller and buyer of stolen products are liable. Meanwhile, the suspects would soon be arraigned in court at the end of investigation."

International governments and aid agencies are working to get urgent supplies to millions of people affected by Typhoon Haiyan.
More than nine million people have been affected in the Philippines, with more than 600,000 people left homeless.
So far the death toll is confirmed at 1,774, but this is expected to rise significantly with estimates that it could be at least 10,000.
Typhoon Haiyan: Aid in numbers
The United Nations has released $25 million in emergency funds to provide food, temporary shelters, health services, drinking water and sanitation and has issued an appeal for a further $300m (£190m).
Tonnes of aid - from food and shelters to digital radios - are being prepared or already making their way to the Philippines.
The US aircraft carrier George Washington has been sent to the region, expected to arrive within 48 hours.
The ship has a fleet of helicopters which can be used to drop supplies to inaccessible areas, and evacuate survivors to safety.
The US military also plans to fly five C-130 heavy-lift aircraft into Tacloban, one of the worst-affected cities.
Maj. Leo Liebrich told the AP agency: "We're bringing in relief supplies, and leaving with evacuees (for Manila). It's pretty chaotic."
The British warship HMS Daring and an RAF C-17 transport aircraft will also be deployed, Prime Minister David Cameron has announced.
Double blow
When the typhoon struck, the region was still reeling from the Bohol earthquake in October. More than 17,300 people were already receiving food aid from the World Food Programme as a result of the quake.
British charity ShelterBox, which provides emergency shelter and non-food supplies for families affected by disasters, was already in the region working with affected families.

ShelterBox volunteer Mark Dyer weathered the storm on Bohol Island.
"When we knew the typhoon was coming, we advised people to lower the tents before the storm. So we are now going back to help people put these tents back up, so they will at least have places to live for the next few weeks."
ShelterBox provides families with a plastic box which contains a variety of items. As well as a tent - designed to withstand extremes of wind, rain and cold - it includes water purification equipment, blankets, cooking implements and solar-powered lighting and activity packs for children.
In the Philippines, Red Cross volunteers are packing relief items such as food and hygiene kits to be distributed to affected areas.
Food items include rice, canned goods, sugar, salt, cooking oil.
Non-food items including laundry soap, bath soap, jerry cans, kitchen sets and tarpaulins will also be sent.
The agency has also issued advice to survivors caught in the immediate aftermath.

The Osun State Police Command Has Arrested A 35-Year-Old Vulcaniser, Ademola Simiyu, Of Ile Olode In Ikoyi For Allegedly Defiling His 11-Year-Old Daughter
Simiyu, a father of three, allegedly committed the act on Wednesday, October 23, when he woke up the girl at about 12 midnight while she was sleeping with her siblings and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her.
The suspect was said to have stifled the cries of his daughter by covering her mouth with his palm. The girl reportedly started bleeding heavily but the father refused to take her to the hospital, out of fear of questions that could be raised concerning the bleeding.
But his deeds came out in the open on October 24 when the girl reportedly told her mother what her father did to her during the former’s visit to the girl who had by then fallen sick.
Crime Reports gathered that when the case was reported to the police, detectives immediately took her to the hospital for medical examination and treatment.

 
When interrogated by the police, Simiyu was said to have confessed to the deeds, saying that he did not know what came over him. He also revealed that he married the girl’s mother in 2000 and they had three children between them but that they had lived apart in the last two years because of a misunderstanding they had, saying that he had been the one taking care of the children.
It was gathered that the medical report indicated that the girl had coital bleeding while honeypotl examination revealed laceration in her honeypotl wall, with foul smell and discharged altered blood coming from it. The report also indicated that her hymen had been torn and there was tenderness around her vulva and pelvis.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Folasade Odoro, a Deputy Superintendent of Police said that the Commissioner of Police, Dorothy Gimba, had directed that a diligent investigation should be conducted into the case, decrying the high number of defilement and r*pe cases within the society.
Meanwhile, Crime Reports learnt that the suspect had been charged to Court 4, Osogbo Magistrates’ Court on a three-count charge. Though he pleaded not guilty to the charges, the magistrate ordered that he should be remanded in Ilesa prison. The case was adjourned to November 28.

One of Nigeria’s most prominent Fuji musicians, Wasiu Alabi Odetola, popularly known as Pasuma Wonder is currently enmeshed in a murder mess.
From all indications, the Fuji veteran who recently celebrated 20 years on stage may be on his way into police net if matters are not well handled. Eye witnesses are saying that a member of the convoy of the Fuji star over-ran a teenage fan after Pasuma’s vehicle knocked down the victim on their way from a show at Idimu-Council area of Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.
The victim, Bidemi, a 12-year old fan of the ‘Orobokibo’ singer is said to have been lurking around to get a glimpse of the star as he was leaving the St. Augustine Events Hall, Isheri-Idimu where the show took place only to lose his life in the process. ‘Pasuma was trying to avoid the area boys as he was leaving and so he was driving fast and it happened that he knocked the boy down and the vehicle behind him ran over the boy’, an eye witness said.
Pasuma is said to have been driving in his newly acquired Range Rover Sports and did not bother to slow down to find out what had happened. ‘He sped off without caring’, another eye witness said.
But the singer’s minders insist he’s innocent and absolutely unaware of what happened after he left the event venue. Those close to Pasuma said  he wasn’t initially aware of the situation and that the decease may have been hit by a random car coming behind the musician.
Investigations reveal that ‘Paso’, as the singer is fondly called in the streets was trying to avoid the area boys who were desperate to extort him. It has become an accepted tradition in the Fuji industry, for Fuji artistes who perform in an area to ‘settle’ the area boys because they form the largest percentage of their fan base.

 
Pasuma according to a few ‘area boys’ who were at the scene of the incident said the self- acclaimed Oganla of Fuji is fond of not ‘settling’ the area boys and it was in this bid to avoid being extorted that led to the untimely death of the teenager.
‘Paso no dey like to settle. Na because e no wan settle make am drive fast like that’, one of the area boys said.
Other sources say he actually tipped fans and some miscreants, but like Oliver Twist, some camps wanted more and the musician sped off after he had had enough. Speaking in a telephone conversation, Pasuma’s manager, Afolabi Oyekoya refused to confirm or deny the allegations. He was yet to issue an official statement as at press time, and NET enquiries were left unanswered.
The family of the victim could not be reached for comment. Our correspondents’ visit to the St. Augustine Events Centre, venue of the show did not yield results as the management refused to comment on the incident.
All efforts to get the police officers at Idimu Police Station Area M also proved abortive, as the officers refused to entertain any questions and directed that we referred the inquiry to the office of the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, whose number was switched off at the time.
Pasuma is not the first celebrity to be involved in a hit and run. Years ago, the current president of the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria, Ibinabo Fiberesima was arrested and imprisoned for killing a Lagos doctor. Also, last year, singer Terry G was alleged to have been involved in a hit and run situation. It is not clear how the case ended.
