|  The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, has challenged President Goodluck Jonathan to remove him from office if he can. Tukur's outburst followed the refusal of members of the party's National Working Committee to attend a meeting he called at the party's secretariat in Abuja last Wednesday. The Adamawa State born politician, who is growing isolated at the top levels of the party where he is being held responsible for its dwindling influence and the defection of members, was infuriated by the attitude of his fellow national officers. He told reporters that he can only be removed from office through a properly conducted National Convention and that unless and until that takes place, nobody, including President Jonathan can remove him. The National Chairman also dismissed the allegation that he has been asked to resign by the President, and accused the opposition of planting the story to create disharmony in the party. "I am an elected National Chairman, I have my certificate of return, I cannot resign,” he bragged. “The convention brought me, so it has to take the convention that brought me for me to resign. So, not even the President can ask me to resign. Remember, some members of the NWC were asked to go recently because the election that brought them was flawed, so Mr. President cannot tread that route again." | The Imam in charge of the 13 Brigade Central Mosque, Akim Army Barracks, Calabar, Cross River State, Major Ibrahim Shofolahan, has frowned at the annual Calabar carnival organized by the state government, describing it as devilish. The Imam, who made this known on Friday during the special prayer session to mark the 2014 Armed Forces Remembrance Day in Calabar, said the government had been frittering the state resources in promoting immorality and “ungodly things” instead of proffering solutions on how to better the lives of the citizens. Shofolahan said, “The most painful thing in this state is that government is spending resources and encouraging ungodly things in the state. Money that was supposed to be used for development has rather been wasted on ungodly things. “A situation where people go unclad on the road in the name of carnival is uncalled for. The money we spend on carnival can be used to help the poor widows and relations of our fallen heroes who lost their lives while others survived with various degrees of injuries during the first and second world wars and peace keeping operations”. The military cleric also admonished Muslim faithful to remain steadfast in the service of Allah and to desist from fighting over earthly things. The Imam said that every moment of Muslims’ life on earth should count because they would give account of their stewardship on the last day. Maheeda has been in the news recently, having been posting unclad pictures of herself on the internet, which have been generating several harsh criticisms. She has also not bothered about what many people have been saying about her, claiming her family is solidly behind her actions. OJB recently returned to Nigeria after a successful surgery in India. He was treated for kidney related ailment. As gathered, OJB will make a cameo appearance on the said music video. | A 21-year-old man, Mansur Tanko, on Friday, burnt himself to death in Jalingo, after a disagreement with his father, Tanko Mijinyawa, over marriage. The Taraba Police Public Relations Officer, Joseph Kwaji, confirmed the incident and said the Jalingo Division of the police had commenced investigation into the matter. Tanko, according to a witness, Jibrin Bala, set himself ablaze because his family refused to approve his wedding with a girl, Blessing. The witness told sympathisers that Tanko introduced Blessing to his father as his proposed wife, but the father kicked against the union, describing it as a bad choice. Bala said efforts by the father to convince his son to look for another girl failed, as he insisted that he could not survive without Blessing. The witness added that Tanko suddenly left his father and went to a corner in the compound, where he poured petrol on his body and set himself ablaze.
"When we suddenly saw fire, everybody ran toward the corner of the compound, only to see Tanko burning.
"The father and other people in the compound tried to rescue Tanko from the fire, but failed as the flame was much and we could not move near," he said.Meanwhile, he said, Tanko's father is currently receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Jalingo, for injuries sustained while trying to rescue the son from the fire.
