Qatar stadium design critics: "It looks like a honeypot."

AECOM Technology Corporation posted a short video animation of the design for Qatar's new Al Wakrah sports stadium Saturday, which under almost immediate criticism for its resemblance to female genitalia.
The $120 billion project bears little resemblance to an ancient dhow boat "that Qataris traditionally used for pearl diving."
Qatar is building the 45,000-capacity stadium to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The climate-controlled stadium will be about 12 miles south of Doha, in "one of the oldest inhabited areas in Qatar, with a rich cultural heritage evidenced by its traditional Islamic architecture, historical buildings, distinctive mosques and archaeological sites," according to AECOM.

32  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / ASUU Strike: NEC Meeting Suspended Indefinitely Because Of Iyayi’ on: 13-11-2013 06:07 PM

The National Executive Council, NEC, meeting of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has been suspended indefinitely.
The meeting was initially scheduled to hold at Bayero University, Kano, on Wednesday, but the ASUU National President, Nasiru Fagge, has revealed that it has been postponed.
The reason for its suspension is because of the death of Professor Festus Iyayi, who was a former president of ASUU. Iyayi died in a car crash allegedly caused by the convoy of the Kogi State Governor, Idris Wada on Tuesday, while travelling for the NEC meeting.
Several members of the executive council from various universities from all over the country, were already in Kano for the meeting, where they were expected to deliberate on the resolutions of various chapters of ASUU, on whether or not the strike should be called off

33  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Saraki Tells ASUU To End Strike To Honour Festus Iyayi - What Do You Think? on: 13-11-2013 04:37 PM

The representative, Kwara Central Senatorial District, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, on Wednesday said that the time has come for the leadership and membership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities to end the over four months strike that has led to the disruption of acadmic activities.

Saraki, who was reacting to the death on Tuesday of renowned academics and former President of ASUU, Dr. Festus Iyayi, in a road accident, said the union should consider calling off the strike in his memory.

Iyayi was killed in the accident blamed on the convoy of the Kogi State Governor, Captain Idris Wada, in Lokoja, while on his way to Kano for the National Executive Council meeting of ASUU.
The NEC was to consider the proposal by President Goodluck Jonathan on ways to end the face-off with the Federal Government.
Saraki, a former Governor of Kwara State, told the union: "While there can be justifiable reasons to sustain the strike, the death of Iyayi has, obviously, changed the tune of the music.
"In his honour, even if all the terms and conditions for reopening our ivory towers have not been met by the government, you should consider the reopening of the universities."
And to the Federal Government, Saraki, in the statement signed by his Media Office, said: "Education should not be toyed with by any government that is intent on developing the country.
"This is more so for a government that has proclaimed its desire to move the country from the label of a developing one to a developed nation.
"There is no sacrifice that is too much to be made in the bid to develop the country.
"All that is required to ensure that this our country with limitless potentials achieves the height of greatness is by being prudent in allocation and spending of our resources and commonwealth.
"The demands by ASUU are not out of place.

"It is for the good of the nation."

*When will ASUU stop using this strike to hold the government to ransom at the expense of the youth?it has become annoying...will this strike better the universities or is it for their selfish interest?personal gain?

34  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Dairy of a Nigerian Student on: 13-11-2013 04:36 PM

Dairy of a Nigerian Student was written by one of our readers; Nworgu Uchenna.
Lazily rising from my sleep with strained eyes and a big sigh, numbness rapidly disappearing from my fingers and toes, I roll over and curl up more tightly, hugging my knees between my arms. Its yet another new day. I am a young lad but my fears and worries are that of a Christmas goat awaiting slaughter.
My school identity card says 2009-2013 but I know that with the way things are going I may not graduate till well into 2015. That is if I am not dead by then, blown away by a bomb, shot down by the police or even beaten to death by a violent legislator. I sound very pessimistic and gloomy, it's not my fault. The situation at hand has killed my enthusiasm and that of millions of students of government-owned tertiary institutions.
News of an impending strike started trickling into our ears around late June and we shrugged it off as one of those things, 'normal ASUU wahala' which would be resolved in no time. Alas, our joy was shortlived in the first week of July when a communiqué was issued confirming the strike action. Students living in far places were confronted with the sad fact that they may yet again have to risk their lives to return home as this strike was actually happening.
Continue...........

Thank God for my Industrial Training, Facebook, and of course Twitter, I won't have to end up idle or exposed to extrajudicial killing. As ironic as this may sound, the combination of some of these 3 facilities, if not more has being responsible for maintaining the sanity of millions of Nigerian students sitting down at home idle and frustrated. So many students are spending virtually this period of strike "facebooking" and tweeting, chatting, visiting friends and just doing anything to kill the boredom.
When two elephants fight, what shall become of the grass? Question for the gods, maybe. No one knows when ASUU will be calling off the strike. How I wish the government and ASUU sheath their swords and pity our plights. How I wish the government pays more attention to funding of universities and investment in human resources.
How I wish ASUU compromises a bit and comes down to reasonable agrrement. All we here everyday is meeting upon meeting, negotiations. To make matters worse, ASUU seems to have pulled out of negotiations and the government itself is concentrating fully on political brouhaha, domestic violence, and Boko Haram issue in no particular order. Well I will not digress into the details of it all, after all what do I know?
All I know is that when I resume back to school (only God knows whenever that is) *sad face*, austerity measures might have to take its place in favour of my usual philanthropic nature. Economic meltdown has taken a rather harsh toll on my dad's finance consequently affecting my own meagre share; it means no more generosity with my belongings.
We are been told ubiquitously to pray. "Pray for your family. Pray for your country. Pray for the whole world." So we are praying or at least I have being praying. Even with my deep pessimism and sarcasm, there's still one tiny voice in my head telling me that things will work out fine. I have survived worse. But for now its back to tweeting, chatting and hustling, at least these ones have not decided to strike yet.

After the successful premiere of the movie UNFORGIVABLE Yoruba star Ronke Ojo blasts Nigerian men, calling them not romantic, wicked and not real.
"They are mad people because normal people would not act like that. I say to people on a daily basis that I pity African women," the star adds.

She says that Nigeria men, especially Yorubas, treat their wives as slaves. The actress also claims that these married women lack love and care in their marriage, but have to be 110% submissive.
Ojo accuses men on buying their women clothes instead of demonstrating their love and affection.
"Nigerian men are just not real; they are wicked. They are too full of ego," - she adds.

37  Forum / The Buzz Central / SHOCKING: Pasuma In MURDER Scandal on: 12-11-2013 08:27 AM

One of Nigeria's most prominent Fuji musicians, Wasiu Alabi Odetola, popularly known as Pasuma Wonder is currently enmeshed in a murder mess.
From all indications, the Fuji veteran who recently celebrated 20 years on stage may be on his way into police net if matters are not well handled. Eye witnesses are saying that a member of the convoy of the Fuji star over-ran a teenage fan after Pasuma's vehicle knocked down the victim on their way from a show at Idimu-Council area of Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.
The victim, Bidemi, a 12-year old fan of the 'Orobokibo' singer is said to have been lurking around to get a glimpse of the star as he was leaving the St. Augustine Events Hall, Isheri-Idimu where the show took place only to lose his life in the process. 'Pasuma was trying to avoid the area boys as he was leaving and so he was driving fast and it happened that he knocked the boy down and the vehicle behind him ran over the boy', an eye witness said.
Continue After The Break...............

Pasuma is said to have been driving in his newly acquired Range Rover Sports and did not bother to slow down to find out what had happened. 'He sped off without caring', another eye witness said.
But the singer's minders insist he's innocent and absolutely unaware of what happened after he left the event venue. Those close to Pasuma said he wasn't initially aware of the situation and that the decease may have been hit by a random car coming behind the musician.
Investigations reveal that 'Paso', as the singer is fondly called in the streets was trying to avoid the area boys who were desperate to extort him. It has become an accepted tradition in the Fuji industry, for Fuji artistes who perform in an area to 'settle' the area boys because they form the largest percentage of their fan base.
Pasuma according to a few 'area boys' who were at the scene of the incident said the self- acclaimed Oganla of Fuji is fond of not 'settling' the area boys and it was in this bid to avoid being extorted that led to the untimely death of the teenager.
'Paso no dey like to settle. Na because e no wan settle make am drive fast like that', one of the area boys said.
Other sources say he actually tipped fans and some miscreants, but like Oliver Twist, some camps wanted more and the musician sped off after he had had enough. Speaking in a telephone conversation, Pasuma's manager, Afolabi Oyekoya refused to confirm or deny the allegations. He was yet to issue an official statement as at press time, and NET enquiries were left unanswered.
The family of the victim could not be reached for comment. Our correspondents' visit to the St. Augustine Events Centre, venue of the show did not yield results as the management refused to comment on the incident.
All efforts to get the police officers at Idimu Police Station Area M also proved abortive, as the officers refused to entertain any questions and directed that we referred the inquiry to the office of the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, whose number was switched off at the time.
Pasuma is not the first celebrity to be involved in a hit and run. Years ago, the current president of the Actors' Guild of Nigeria, Ibinabo Fiberesima was arrested and imprisoned for killing a Lagos doctor. Also, last year, singer Terry G was alleged to have been involved in a hit and run situation. It is not clear how the case ended.

40  Forum / The Buzz Central / Pray For Me, I Need A Husband Fast” – Funke Akindele Cries Out on: 11-11-2013 04:48 PM

Nollywood actress and producer of award winning movie, Jenifa, Funke Akindele, may be rich, famous and widely celebrated, but something is still missing in her life: a husband.
The actress whose nine months old marriage to Kenny Oloyede crashed about three months ago, bared her mind recently when she said she would want to settle down fast and start bearing children, seeing that age is not on her side.
In her mid-30s, Funke said she is praying to God for her own man soon.
“Man proposes and God disposes,” she said, waxing spiritual, “so people should keep their fingers crossed and pray for me to meet the bone of the bone of my bone and the flesh of my flesh and not somebody else.
“It is one of my dreams to bear children soon and I believe it will come to pass soon. Once I start my home, I hope to cut down on acting so that I can give my family more attention,” she says.
“Some of my mates have more than three kids today,” Funke laments, again going spiritual; “Perhaps, this is how God wants me to be for now. When the time comes, and that time could be anytime, I hope to put acting on hold for a family.”
She also has a word for all those guys who are scared of asking for her hand in marriage:
“To all the guys scared of approaching me for marriage, I say, you don’t have to let inferiority complex overwhelm you. If God says you are the right person for me, then nothing will stop it.”
