| Mustapha Umar, a self confessed Boko Haram member arrested and tried before a Federal High Court siting in Abuja in connection with the 26th April, 2012 bombing of SOJ Plaza in Kaduna state occupied by ThisDay, The Moment and The Sun Newspapers, was on Friday found guilty of the one count charge of terrorism and sentenced for life. The convicted terrorist was alleged to have driven a white Honda Academy car with registration number AL 306 MKA with improvised explosives devices into the premises of SOJ plaza with the intention to detonate improvised explosive devices within the premises. The incident claimed the lives of three persons and caused several degrees of injuries on others. The convict had pleaded not guilty during his trial but the court placed heavy reliance on his recorded interview which he granted to investigators during interrogations where he claimed to be a member of the deadly Islamic fundamentalist group, Boko Haram, as well as the testimonies of ten witnesses comprising of police officers who participated in the investigation and were led in evidence during the trial. The prosecution drew the court’s attention to section 4 (2) of the Terrorism Act and asked the court to consider the deaths recorded at the incident and to pronounce a death sentence on the accused but the court declined that invitation and pointed out that the convict was charged against section One of the Terrorism Prevention Act which provides for a life sentence upon conviction. The court also found that the convict demonstrated no remorse for his actions throughout the trial and observed that the souls of those whose deaths were caused by his actions are crying out for substantial justice noting that no one’s life is more important than that of others. Furthermore, the court held that the convict’s reason for attacking ThisDay newspapers which he said was because the newspaper was denigrating Prophet Mohammed was unattainable and noted that as members of the fourth realm, nobody should be allowed to muzzle the press, an objective which the terrorist act was calculated to achieve . Pleadings by the defence lawyer for the court to temper justice with mercy as the convict is a youth whose family and aged parents depend on for their livelihood fell on deaf ears as the court slammed a life sentence on the convict with a fine of One Hundred and Fifty Million Naira. His sentence is to be served with hard labour. The court further noted that the state of mind of the convict with which the terrorism attack was planned, coordinated and orchestrated reinforced its determination to remove him from the public for life. To the families of the victims of the terror act, the court awarded the sum of One Hundred and Fifty Million Naira, noting that their deaths should not just go like that. This will be forwarded to the Committee set up by the President on the resolution of the Boko Haram insurgents actions for payment. The court presided by Justice Ademola Adeniyi also praised the Nigeria Police Force for the expertise and professionalism demonstrated in the trial which led to the quality prosecution of the matter by the team of lawyers led by Mr. Shuaibu Labaran, a senior state counsel from Nigeria’s Ministry of Justice. |  Julius Agwu was in the US after the birth of his daughter and says his Etisalat line got swapped without his approval, given to another person who has defrauded him by using his credit card… Read his press release below “While I was in America to see my new baby, I suddenly realized that my Etisalat line was inactive. I couldn’t receive and make calls. I went to Etisalat office in Hilton to complain and to discover what the problem was. I was told someone asked the company to swap my line. I got very worried immediately and queried them. How could someone’s line get swapped without the authorization of the owner? Even as the owner of the line, I would issue an authorization letter to effect that. I was worried because I personally registered the line and I told them I want to know the staff that granted the request but they refused. It was however rectified that very day by one Miss Joan and I was able to make use of the line again momentarily, for that day only. I later made several calls to the customer care and till now, nothing has been done. Due to their negligence, I have lost few jobs because that is the only line some clients could reach me on. Another painful aspect of it all is that the person broke into my credit card account and it was used in Rome and Milan. And as a matter of fact, I didn’t go to those places. I have to block the card because I have lost money. The credit on the line was also transferred to the new line by the person who swapped it. There is a high level of impunity in this country and nobody cares. I’m crying out so that people can know how shameless and useless some brands can be. I will take this matter to the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) and National Human Rights Commission. |  A Somolu Magistrate’s Court has sentenced a 22-year-old man, Taiwo Jinadu, to 17 years in prison. We learnt that Jinadu is the son of the Baale of a community in Bariga. According to the police prosecutor, ASP Adegoke, the accused robbed one Mutairu Idris of a Nokia phone, valued at N13,000 on Olokodana Street on September 13, 2013, in the Bariga area of Lagos State. Jinadu was also accused of stealing N110,000 and attempting to kill Idris during the operation. Jinadu was further accused of discharging bullets and damaging the house of one Pa Mutairu Oluwole at 22, Ososa Street, vandalising property worth N55,000 during the robbery operation. The accused was arrested at a joint in a raid by policemen attached to Bariga Division. Our correspondent learnt that it was during investigation that the police discovered Jinadu’s true identity. The accused was charged with seven counts of armed robbery, attempted murder and malicious damage. The charges read in part, “That you, Taiwo Jinadu, and others at large on September 13, 2013, around 9pm, at a spot along Olokodana Street, in front of Standard Hotel, Bariga, Lagos, did steal one Nokia phone valued N13, 500, property of one Mutairu Idris (male), and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011. “That you, Taiwo Jinadu, in the aforementioned magisterial district did attempt to kill one Mutairu Idris, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 228 of Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011. “That you on the same date, time and place did unlawfully threaten the lives of Idris Mutairu, Idris Kareem, Pa Kushimo Mutairu Oluwole and Serifat Lukman, the occupants of 22 Ososa Street, Bariga, by discharging loaded firearms and damaging their residential house and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 56(1) (a) (b) (2) of Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.” Jinadu pleaded guilty to the seven charges. |  Premium Times is reporting that Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom state supervised the beating of a lawmaker. Read below... The Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly has descended into a serious crisis after the state governor, Godswill Akpabio, personally supervised the beating of a lawmaker he suspected to be politically opposed to him and his loyalists, Premium Times has learnt. Mr. Akpabio, witnesses said, watched as his loyalists manhandled Onofiok Luke, chairman of the House Committee on Finance and Appropriations, who was accused of being rude to the governor after he rose in defense of another lawmaker accused of challenging a loyalist of the governor at a caucus meeting held two days earlier. The governor, our sources said, beamed with smiles as members of his kitchen cabinet, comprising Nse Ntuen, chairman of Essien Udim local government and Emmanuel Ekon, a member representing Abak/Ika/Etim Ekpo federal constituency in the House of Representatives, assaulted Mr. Luke for being allegedly rude to the governor. The incident happened November 2 at a funeral service in honour of the mother-in-law of a state lawmaker, Gabriel Tobi, held in Etim Ekpo local government area of the state. Mr. Akpabio had at the event summoned some lawmakers and tongue-lashed them for doing nothing after Victor Udofia, a lawmaker representing Ikono/Ini state Constituency, allegedly attacked his loyalist, Aniekan Akpan, a member representing Ukanafun state constituency, at a caucus meeting of the House. Witnesses say as the governor fumed and abused Mr. Udofia, who was not at the event, an equally furious Mr. Luke rose in defence of his colleague, telling the governor to abandon his divide-and-rule tactics in the interest of the state. The governor had directed the speaker of the Assembly, Sam Ikon, to immediately activate a process that would lead to the suspension of Mr. Udofia from the House. But Mr. Luke reportedly shot back, saying Mr. Udofia committed no offence and that any move to punish him would be resisted. Angered by Mr. Luke’s audacity, Messrs Ekon and Ntuen descended on him, hitting and punching him repeatedly. Mr. Akpabio simply looked on, our sources said. The fight, we learnt, only ended after Paul Ekpo, the state Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, intervened. The Akwa state House of Assembly is now divided along those from the governor’s minority Annang ethnic group and those from the majority Ibibio ethnic group. Some lawmakers accuse Mr. Akpabio of financially empowering legislators from his ethnic group and then using them to undermine the speaker and other lawmakers from Ibibioland. Messrs Ntuen and Ekon, who attacked Mr. Luke, are from Mr. Akpabio’s Annang ethnic group while Mr. Luke is Ibibio. PREMIUM TIMES learnt that after the incident, Mr. Akpabio directed his aides to embark on a tour of media establishments to compromise them and get them to drop stories on the accident. Concerned that the incident might do further damage to his image, our sources within the administration said, the governor also hurriedly convened a press conference where he allegedly bribed reporters with N50,000 each not to report the incident. Mr. Akpabio could not be reached to comment for this story. But his spokesperson, who is also the state Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah, confirmed there was a disagreement between Mr. Onofiok and the governor. Mr. Umanah said while talking to the governor on the day in question, the lawmaker raised his voice against Mr. Akpabio. “Other members asked him not to shout because he was talking to the governor,” Mr. Umanah said. “Later, everything calmed down.” The commissioner added via a text message, “I was there in person. Nobody beat up Onofiok talk less of doing so before the governor.” Mr. Onofiok could not be reached for comments. But a source close to him said he had been under pressure from Governor Akpabio in the last few days to address the media to say he was never beaten by the governor’s loyalists. | Gunmen on Thursday killed four policemen who were travelling to Anambra State for election duties. The policemen were said to be part of those deployed from Osun State for the November 16 governorship election in Anambra State. It was learnt that the truck they were travelling in was attacked by gunmen at the Benin bypass. Four of them were killed immediately. It could not however be ascertained whether the attackers were political thugs or armed robbers. |  Police detectives from Igando Police Station in Lagos, have arrested a 42-year old landlord for allegedly defiling a 10-year old daughter of his tenant. The incident occurred on 10 November at 45, Unity Road in Egan, Lagos, and according to P.M.NEWS, the suspect, Taiwo Bakare, an electrician from Oyo State, had lured the girl, (name withheld) to his parlour with sweet where he allegedly committed the act. He thereafter attempted to insert his manhood into the little girl’s private part when he was caught in the act. Another tenant saw him and raised an alarm, which attracted other tenants. Police detectives were invited and they arrested the man and took him to their station. Speaking with P.M.NEWS, the suspect, who claimed to be married and has four children, confessed that he has a high libido. My wife and children had all gone out when the devil took the better part of me and I had to lure the girl to my parlour in an attempt to have sex with her,” he confessed.
