45  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Doctors begin strike on: 18-12-2013 08:51 PM
The medical workers on Wednesday went ahead with their planned industrial action despite pleas by the Federal Government and well meaning Nigerians.
Medical and dental practitioners under the umbrella body of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Tuesday announced that the strike will go on as planned due to government inability to resolve the lingering issues between them.
Consequently, activities at most hospitals have been crippled with many patients left stranded as doctors began an indefinite strike.
Doctors at the National Hospital, Abuja, were among the earliest to embark on the strike. Patients who had gone to the hospital for medical attention were left unattended to as they were told bluntly that doctors were on strike.
But it would be too early to say the level of success of the strike as some doctors are still rendering services.
In one of the hospitals visited, doctors were seen attending to patients, though they acknowledged the fact that the strike action is on.
A doctor who responded to questions on condition of anonymity, said:”Yes, the strike by our umbrella body has started, but we here are working.
“We are tired with the issue of these frequent strike action. As I am talking to you now, many patients will die today due to lack of attention. We have been trained to save the lives of these patients. Their blood will be on our head if we fail to save them because of our disagreement with the government.
“I suggest that the NMA executives should start negotiating with the government while we continue to render our services. They should not compare our work with that of ASUU. ASUU can put modalities in place to cover their scheme of work, but in our case, once a life is lost, we cannot bring it back.
“I totally disagree with this frequent strike by doctors. Many of my colleagues are not in support of this endless strike, but because of fear of being tagged ‘a rebel’ by the NMA, they just sit at home. If you check very well some doctors today will join some of our colleagues in the private sector to assist them treat patient. As I am talking to you, I am weeping inside me.”
The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, had at the weekend insisted that there is certainly no need for another strike in the health sector.
The minister appealed to NMA to shelve their planned strike action, so as not to bring another hardship to Nigerians, particularly in this festive season.

50  Forum / Politics / Senate Rejects Jonathan's Impeachment Call on: 18-12-2013 08:34 AM
The Senate is opposed to calls for President Goodluck Jonathan’s impeachment.

The chairman, Committee on Information, Media and Public Affairs, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, noted yesterday that calls for Jonathan’s impeachment lacked in merit.

Abaribe spoke at a news conference after the upper chamber rose from a closed door session, which lasted over one hour.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the National Assembly to impeach Jonathan for alleged gross misconduct.

The APC said Jonathan’s impeachment would save the country from imminent collapse.

Asked about the Senate’s position on the call, Abaribe said: “The Senate’s position is that the call for impeachment of the President is utter rubbish.”

“We have heard of the call for the President’s impeachment and as far as the Senate is concerned, it is utter rubbish,” Abaribe added.

The APC said it made the call with the belief that Jonathan’s impeachment was a legitimate constitutional option available to the National Assembly to protect democracy and ensure unity.

Abaribe also said that the conference committee of the National Assembly set up to resolve the differences on the appropriate oil benchmark for 2014 budget was set to resume its sitting yesterday.

51  Forum / Politics / Obasanjo's Daughter, Iyabo writes father: Calls him liar, manipulator, hypocrite on: 18-12-2013 08:25 AM

Getting back to my mother, I still remember your beating her up continually when we were kids. What kids can forget that kind of violence against their mother?  Your maltreatment of women is legendary.  Many of your women have come out to denounce you in public but since your madness is also part of the madness of the society, it is the women that are usually ignored and mistreated. Of course, you are the great pretender, making people believe you have a good family life and a good relationship with your children but once in a while your pretence gets cracked.

When Gbenga gave a ride to help someone he didn’t know but saw was in need and the person betrayed his trust by tapping his candid response on the issues going on between you and your then vice-president, Atiku Abubakar, you had your aides go on air and denounce the boy before you even spoke to him to find out what happened.  What kind of father does that? Your atrocities to some of my other siblings I will let them tell in their own due time or never if they choose.

Some of the details of our life are public but the people choose to ignore it and pretended we enjoyed some largesse when you were President.

54  Forum / The Buzz Central / Bianca Ojukwu Addresses Claims By Husband's Family That Ojukwu Didn’t Marry Her on: 17-12-2013 07:06 AM

Bianca Ojukwu in a new interview with SunNews addressed the claims by some members of her late husband’s family that he did not actually marry her.

She said:

I think that is laughable because my marriage first and foremost, which took place at Our Lady’s Queen of Nigeria Catholic Church in Abuja, was a celebrated ceremony with ‘who is who in Nigeria’ in attendance. The reception was at the Hilton. In fact, it had a glittering galaxy of Nigerians, most of them are still alive today.

And what is interesting about this ridiculous assertion is that those that are making the assertion or asking me to bring proof of my marriage with their brother were present at the wedding in Abuja, and present at the wine-carrying at Ngwo, and even dressed in the uniform depicting their family outing.

All the pictures are there to prove it, the video is there to prove it, you can look at the pictures yourself. Look at this picture, you can see Senator Pius Anyim, you can see Governor Rochas Okorocha, all of them came to Ngwo.

So, for people to wake up and start suffering from selective amnesia just because there are cases in court where property and who gets what is concerned is ridiculous.

The fact remains that I was married to their brother at the registry, at the church and traditionally in my father’s compound. I remain the only woman that Ikemba married or went through these three forms of marriages with, I’m the only one, and it is on record.

Therefore, for them to wake up and decide that what happened never happened, I  believe it is really unfortunate for them because there is no iota of truth in that assertion and it does not depict them in favorable light because they were there.

57  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / ASUU Leaders Assault Journalists In Minna Over Strike Report on: 17-12-2013 06:09 AM
Contrary to the earliar report that the strike has been called off! ASUU will but Check this out!
After hours of endless waiting by journalists, leaders of the Academic Staff Union of University, emerged from the Senate Building of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, venue of the National Executive Committee meeting of the union, to harass the anxious newsmen.
They shouted repeatedly, “who invited these silly people.”
One of the notable members of the Union that instructed security men to order the journalists to leave the building is the Chairman of ASUU in FUT, Minna, Dr. Abdulfatai Jimoh, who went ahead to assault the Daily Trust correspondent, Aliyu Hamagan.
Jimoh had earlier thought Hamagan was a member of the Union and invited him to come closer. He then asked, “Who brought this silly people inside? What are they doing here?”
Hamagan, however, responded, “I am one of the people you are calling silly. I will not have you insult us like that.”
Jimoh, on finding out that he was speaking with a journalist, pushed Hamagan and asked him to leave the premises, saying, “You people are intruding, we did not invite you. Get out of this place now.”
The meeting, which started at about 11.30am and holding in behind closed doors at the Senate Building of the FUT, Minna, was ongoing at the time of filing this report at about 7pm.
The scenario took another twist when members of ASUU NEC LOC emerged to inform journalists that some of them (ASUU) are not comfortable with the presence of the pressmen.
Jimoh, who was at this time furious, threatened the media men, saying “Anything wey una see, make una take am like that, because we didn’t invite the media.”
However, there was a disagreement among the members over the presence of the media. Some suggested that the journalists should stay because they were doing their job, others persisted that “we did not invite them. When we need them, we will invite them.”
The Vice Chancellor FUT, Minna, Prof. Musbau Akanji, who got the news that ASUU assaulted some journalists, rushed to the venue pleading with the journalists.
“Although, I am not a part of the meeting, but I am apologising on their behave because they are in my territory. This place (FUT, Minna) is a Federal Government institution, and it is a public place that everybody including journalists can enter especially when they are discharging their responsibilities,” Akanji said.

However, as at the time of filing this report 7pm, the strike has not been called off as reported by media post here. The state of the strike will be declared today 17th Dec.

58  Forum / Politics / APC Reps Set to impeach Jonathan on: 17-12-2013 05:59 AM
Minority Leader of the House, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila
The All Progressives Congress caucus in the House of Representatives on Monday said that it had “enough grounds” to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Goodluck Jonathan but that was not in a hurry to do so.
The APC caucus said the time was not yet ripe to initiate impeachment against the President.
Minority Leader of the House, who is also the APC leader in the House, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, told The PUNCH that neither the caucus nor the entire National Assembly needed a directive from the APC national leadership to impeach the President.
He said lawmakers would monitor the President for now, hoping that he would amend his ways by addressing the allegations raised by former President Olusegun Obasanjo in his controversial letter.
Gbajabiamila said, “As for impeachment, there are enough grounds for impeachment of the President.
“The constitution says you need only one ground, but we have more than one ground already. So, the party (APC) does not have to give us a directive to impeach the President.
“Nobody wants to impeach the President, but we will continue to study the situation to see whether he will sit up.”
He added that the opposition was watching the Peoples Democratic Party closely to see whether it would impeach any of the five governors who defected to the APC recently.
“Particularly interesting is the case of Rivers State. We want to see how they will use five legislators to impeach a governor in that state,” he stated.
Gbajabiamila said the “opposition will respond in the most appropriate manner” should any of the defected governors lose their seat.
When contacted, the PDP caucus in the House warned that it would resist any move to discuss the impeachment of Jonathan at the House.
Deputy Majority Leader, Mr. Leo Ogor, described such as “wishful thinking.”
He argued that the National Assembly would not contemplate impeaching the President because “one external group” said it should do so.
“Their call is even based on inconsequential issues that negate the spirit of the 1999 Constitution,” he said.
Ogor noted that Jonathan was elected by Nigerians, who could also opt to “impeach” him by refusing to return him to the Presidency in 2015.
Investigations showed that there was no formal communication between the national leadership of the APC and its members in the National Assembly on the issue.
Findings revealed that most APC lawmakers got to know of the directive to impeach Jonathan from the publication of the statement by their interim National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Lai Mohammed, in some newspapers.
“Such a discussion has not taken place. We have not been contacted, or should I say, I am not aware. The party has not contacted us formally about the impeachment issue,” one APC member in the House confided in The PUNCH on Monday.
Meanwhile, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Rules and Business, Senator Ita Enang, on Monday said the Senate would not heed the call by the APC to commence impeachment proceedings against the President.
Enang warned the APC to “stop employing cheap blackmail to take over power through the back door.”
He said, “The National Assembly cannot heed the call of the APC or treat the content of former President Obasanjo’s letter.
“The letter from former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s letter was not addressed to the National Assembly.
“The issue of impeachment has not arisen. The issue of impeachment of the president has not at all arisen.”
