Travellers who used the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) on December 30, 2013 had to cautiously avoid pools of water that had collected at the arrival and departure halls of the country’s only international airport.

The pools of water was the result of a leaking roof which gave way after it rained that day.

Water dripped from the ceiling and covered almost half of the departure hall.

Cleaners had to mop the water that had collected at the two halls of the airport while airlines and passengers conducted pre-departure formalities, including luggage check-in and issuing of boarding passes.

An eyewitness, Ms Maame Ama Sanne Otoo, told the Daily Graphic that it took more than an hour to mop the slippery, tiled floor.

“I was very disappointed. The thought of a whole Kotoka International Airport flooded was absurd. It wasn’t the best. Luckily, it happened when most of the check-ins had been done,” Ms Otoo said.

She said some of the travellers took pictures of the scene and described it as a “a big disgrace.”
The arrival hall was not left out as passengers had to tread gingerly in order not to fall. The walkway after the customs checkpoint was also flooded.

Sources said the water seeped from some huge iron beams, which are part of the roof.

They claimed that the beams were not in the original plan of the design of the building and added that the airport was initially planned to be bigger but the size had to be reduced and that resulted in the introduction of the beams.

With time, the sources said, rain water started seeping through the beams onto the floor. Since then, various contractors have applied different methods in trying to solve the problem but the challenge remained.

“I think what should have been done when the problem started was to consult the original French company which built the airport,” the sources said.

“To be honest, the management of the airport has tried variously to solve the problem. I am sure they'll welcome ideas as to how to solve this problem,” the sources added.

Apparently, the problem has been a recurring one from the 1970s, a source at the Airport told the Daily Graphic.

On January 28 2013, a similar situation occurred, with almost the entire arrival hall looking like a mini swimming pool, when torrential rains swept through Accra.

Arriving passengers and their waiting relations witnessed leakages during the evening downpour which rendered the arrival hall of the airport unusable.

The airport’s authorities were reportedly compelled by the embarrassing circumstances to direct arriving passengers to the departure hall, while their relatives waited at the entrance of the departure hall.

Attempts to get authorities of the airport to speak to the issue did not yield any fruit. Persistent calls were not returned.

When last year’s flooding occurred, Mrs Doreen Owusu-Fianko the then Managing Director was reported to have said that the flooding at the arrival terminals of the airport was caused by the choking of the exit pipes for water with debris, probably from the re-roofing project.

“One of the pipes serving as an exit for water got choked, probably with debris, which caused the water to seep into the canyon, flooding the terminal, whilst some cracks in the glass panels also allowed water to seep through,” she was quoted by the Ghana News Agency as saying.

Some of the pictures of the situation made rounds on social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, and Whatsapp, attracting anger and frustration from commentators.

A not-too-enthused Setor Dzisenu wrote: “It is like we’re meeting visitors with a full disclosure of mediocrity and ineptitude.”

She continued: “It is unbecoming. It is embarrassing and speaks to a certain kind of mentality, that this is a nation that’s so horrible at maintenance culture that it doesn’t even try to mask that fact, exposing its guests (some of which may be first- timers) to such an atrocity. At least we should try and hide our flaws at the point of entry into the ‘gateway of Africa.”

This goes against the reports that went viral yesterday that Jim Iyke was involved in a brawl in Accra where he tried pulling a gun on another man, Nana Kwesi who invited Jim Iyke to the Cahaya lounge
where the incident actually happened, has laughed at “how funny people twist and turn stories around'.

Talking to NigeriaFilms, Nana says the story about Jim Iyke fighting over $ 10, 000 was fabricated. There was an issue between Jim Iyke and his business partner (name not disclosed) at the Cahaya Lounge (just opposite ex-President J. J. Rawlings house) and not Crave Café as the media reported it.

The issue had nothing to do with Jim Iyke fighting over $ 10,000. Also, Jim Iyke never attempted to pull a gun."

Nana said he invited Jim Iyke to Cahaya Lounge to discuss a water treatment project with him - clean water and chemical treatment of water.

When Jim Iyke got to Cahaya Lounge with his car and parked, another car drove in and parked just behind Jim Ike’s car.

The driver of the car after parking behind Jim, got out and started acting up. He wanted to attack Jim Iyke but Jim's host, Nana, intervened, preventing the man. The angry man went back to his car and pulled out $10,000, arguing that he wanted to give it to Jim Iyke if the latter had signed a particular document.

When Nana Kwesi asked him what his problem was, the man said that he was to give Jim Iyke the $10,000 if he, Jim, had signed a document.

The man, who alleged that he is a business partner to Jim Iyke, said he had invited Jim Iyke for a meeting at Royal Fiesta Hotel.

Jim Iyke got there and when he was asked to sign a contract, because the contract was not too clear, Jim refused, saying he needed to involve a lawyer or legal brain to peruse the document before he could append his signature on it. The man got furious, accusing Jim Iyke of wasting his time and also spoiling his business because there were other people involved who wanted Jim to sign so they can carry on with the business.

Nana and witnesses tried settling the issue at the Lounge, only for the man to go report to the police that Jim Ike had attacked him.

When the police got to the scene, the people around who was also hob-nobing and were eye witnesses to what ensued, narrated to the police that it is the man who rather attacked Jim Iyke and not the reverse.

The police left without making any arrest.

For someone covered from head to toe in nearly 7,000 metallic piercings, one extra ring might not be anything particularly special.

But the latest addition to Elaine Davidson's collection could be her most cherished ring yet, as the world's most pierced woman today married.

Miss Davidson, who at a recent count had an astonishing 6,925 piercings, tied the knot in Edinburgh, where she lives and runs a shop.

The 42-year-old was accompanied to a registry office in the Scottish capital wearing a white gown as well as pink and flowers around her hair.

And for the special occasion she naturally kept her trademark piercings all in place, along with green, yellow and blue paint markings on her face.

Her husband, Douglas Watson, who has no visible piercings, was dressed for the 35-minute ceremony in a dark blue suit with a blue shirt and tie.

She was also accompanied into Edinburgh Registry Office by two bridesmaids dressed in pink.

The Brazilian-born former nurse first broke the record for most piercings in May 2000, when a Guinness World Records official examined her and found 462 piercings on her body, including 192 on her face.

Miss Davidson has previously said she never removes the rings and studs, which she estimates weigh a total of around three kilos. She also insists there is no pain involved in the piercing, and that she sleeps every night with every piercing still in place.

However, she revealed in 2009 that she doesn't like being pieced and suffers for her art.

She said in February 2009, when she had 6,005 piercings including 1,500 that are 'internal': 'I don't enjoy getting pierced, but to break the record you have to get to a high level.

'I wanted to break the record.

'My family don't even like tattoos or piercings.'

On her own website, Miss Davidson, who also sleeps on a bed of nails and has walked on fire and glass, says she enjoys extreme sports and theatre, but does not drink or smoke.

5. She only gives you little attention when you lie to her that you work with some of the well known and respected companies and business brands in Nigeria.

6. When you try to see how naughty she can be by sending her lewd and raw messages, she simply replies your message with this, 'till you come'.

7. She is a sleeping devourer who only gets awakened and alerted by money and all the good things that come with it.
