18463  Forum / Sports / Lagerback was overpaid - Amokachi on: 9-08-2010 09:44 AM

FORMER international, Daniel Amokachi has said that erstwhile Manager of the Super Eagles, Lars Lagerback was overpaid during his five-month stint as Nigeria's coach.

Amokachi was one of the Swede's assistants when the Super Eagles had a dismal performance at the last World Cup in South Africa.

The Bull as he is fondly called by his admirers argued that a Nigerian coach would have achieved more with a fraction of the wages Lagerback received.

"I think 200,000 dollars a month is a lot of money to pay a coach for a four-month deal. That is too much money to pay somebody to come up with just one point from three games.

"If you get a Nigerian coach and pay him less than that, he will do a better job," said the US '94 World Cup hero.

The former Everton forward however, denied calling for the sack of the former coach of Sweden.

"I did not say any such thing at any time to anybody.

"I speak my mind and I stand by everything I say. I did not hold any meeting with anybody or ask that the coach (Lagerback) be fired. I did not employ him. I do not know how he was employed, so why would I call for him to be sacked?" said Amokachi.
18464  Forum / Relationships & Romance / What if your son’s wife bears a white baby? on: 9-08-2010 06:36 AM
The birth of a white baby to black parents was recently in the news and it has generated a lot of debate. What would you do if it was your daughter-in-law?
Would you send her packing from your son’s household ?

Quote
Akingbesote
I think I would accept the child. It’s not a matter of complexion, provided there is proof that he biologically belongs to my lineage.
But if it happens it was a mistake from the hospital attendants, I think I would accept the baby on condition that it would be clear that it was a mistake, because such has never happened on this planet.

The baby might look strange amidst black parents but it should be kept secrete between the families, so the baby would be secure.
Children are God’s gifts, and it is a blessing we must learn to appreciate whichever we are given, because money cannot buy eternal happiness.

Quote
Fakolujo
I will get a DNA test done to be sure of the paternity. My decision will be based on the DNA findings!

Quote
Amaka
As an African , I will not take the child. The reason being that there is no white man in my lineage. But if I have an albino in my lineage, I would gladly say the child has taken after him or her.
I think it is strange, and definitely questionable. God is a miracle God. There are uncommon miracles like black parents, white baby.

I think if she was not raped, she could have been cutting corners somewhere.
There is one thing which makes women stronger and smarter than men. If you care to know, it’s just the woman that knows who is responsible for her pregnancy. Today, most men unknowingly “father” strange children in their homes or rather call them bastards.

Like some people said, it could be a mistake from birth attendants. I totally disagree with this, as far as I’m concerned, because I expect every hospital to have qualified and professional hands. Secondly, if they’re not blind, birth attendants could have seen the difference in skin colour before doing the “misplacements”.

So, it is pure fallacy to think that a baby was mistakenly given to a wrong mother. It’s just marital infidelity , nothing more. Finally, a thorough and sequential DNA test is required and it would clarify the issue.

Quote
Oyindamola
I will not take such a child, because you never can trust anyone.
She could do anything silly in the absence of my son. I’m a woman and I know what I mean.
She just must tell me where she got the child from, considering peculiarities of both families.

Quote
Kehinde
I want to remind everybody that before a child comes into this world, there must have been segxwal intercourse between a man and a woman. The complexion and the tribe of a child comes from both parents. So if my daughter-in-law gave birth to a white baby, it means the child is not my blood, because I have never heard of white parents giving birth to a black child, despite their science and technology. It indicates that the child is not my grandchild and that the mother must have slept with a white man somewhere.

I will simply advise they go for DNA test and if it is confirmed she’s been unfaithful, she will gently return the baby to the father and they continue their marital bliss.

Quote
Akinleye
If the child does not look like anyone in the family or even the extended families (both sides), then a DNA test should be conducted to determine whether the child is theirs or not. If the child bears their DNA , they should accept the child and know that it’s God’s doing. But if the test states otherwise, then my daughter-in-law should give explanation why she decided to bring shame upon the family. If my son still wants her and takes the child, it’s left to him. Then we should discuss the custody of the child, whether to return the child to the father or not. It all depends on my decison.

Quote
Funmi
It is a pure result of unfaithfulness . Without anyone advising us on what to do, I think we ought to know what our judgment would be. That my daughter-in-law delivers a white baby is a very strange and un-usual occurrence that may have taken place anywhere in this world of science and technology.

I don’t have anything against the innocent child. I think it could happen to anyone, but I’ll keep an eagle eye on my daughter-in-law.

It is his home. I can only advise him and not to run his home for him.

18467  Forum / Relationships & Romance / The pervasive poverty in Nigeria has resulted in the rush for white men by Niger on: 6-08-2010 06:51 PM

•Black & White couple: Oluchi, popular model, with her white husband. More Nigerian girls want to marry white men.

While some of these girls are undergraduates in various higher institutions of learning in the country, others are just trying to make ends meet.

Some of these white men are in Nigeria for greener pastures while others are called upon by companies operating in the country to take up jobs because of their technical know-how.

The girls often meet these men, a term used to describe Europeans, White Americans and Asians, in places like night clubs, bars, shopping malls and parties.

One of the girls,  Osagie Ruth, confirmed that Nigerian girls prefer white men because they spend money without thinking twice. He also said they were more romantic.

Citing an instance, Ruth, who is excited about having white men as lovers, said she has vowed never to date any black man until when she is ready for marriage.

According to her, this vow became necessary after experiencing several heartbreaks with Nigerian men.

“Can you believe that the last one I dated was a married man with three kids? He never told me he was married until I almost got lynched by his wife who saw  us while we were in the heat of passion in his supposed house.

“I would have been dead by now. The worst part of it was that he hardly gave me money for my upkeep and he monitored my daily activities as if  I was in prison custody, yet I stayed in the relationship as I needed a man desperately,” she explained.

She said she was introduced into the “business” by a friend and since then she has “been living in the sweetest world.

“I now have a Honda car and a well furnished apartment.”

Another girl, who maintained anonymity said she prefers dating white men because “they are more understanding and they give us freedom to do a lot of things compared to their Nigerian counterparts.”

She said she could date other men and engage in other ventures that would fetch her money without the prying eyes of her white guys. But that is not the case with the Nigerian men, who she described as greedy and crooked in their love life.

“They prefer hiding you somewhere and doing it only in secret places with you for fear of being recognised by other people.

“But the white men are always proud to move around with you openly. They are proud of what they have even if we are only with them for money.”

Asked why she loves dating only white men, Philomena Okeke, an undergraduate, retorted: “Why I no go date them? Even if they look like albinos, it is a matter of closing my eyes when we are having fun. I begin to think of black people when it is happening.

“Though I hate them, I need their money. I have also had many heartbreaks from Nigerian men and I decided to give the whites a try.  I have no regrets so far.”

P.M.NEWS also gathered from the girls that not all the white men are nice. The ones from Asian countries, India and Lebanon do not like to spend. According to some of the girls, men from these areas prefer paying peanuts after satisfying themselves.

“When dealing with people from these areas, we collect our money first. I am not an animashaun (meaning free giver in Yoruba)” one of the girls, who was seen hanging out with a white man in an eatery told P.M. NEWS.

However, some of the white men are said to be so happy with the ladies that they could go as far as buying houses and cars for them and sending them on vacation abroad.

Ijeoma, a 28-year old lady, who now has two kids for a white man residing in the country, agreed that the reasons for the preference varied.

According to her, “one thing that a black girl sees in a white guy is money in this part of the world because of poverty.

“For others, they want to be seen that they are powerful girls that can trap a white guy. Others want to have a white baby, get married and have security.

“Sometimes, a white guy in Africa might be having a hard time and the next thing on his mind is to go out and bang just any girl. You will find such guys mostly around bars, clubs, etc.

“Now, the girl in return wants a guy to sell her body too and get some few change and they talk, arrange to meet and he takes her to his place and they have sex. He pays her off and other times, there is a huge argument, the girl wants more money probably because she knows she will never see him again and instead of taking N5,000 she will demand for N50,000.

“These white guys also get better pay and remember, they are expatriates, and while their families are abroad, they need to have fun and they discovered that there are loads of loose girls here.

“The second type of girls that go for white guys want to be perceived as powerful, big girls. They travel with the white men, live high class life and have a good sex life. You see these girls driving powerful cars and living in high brow areas of the city.”

18469  Forum / Sports / Scholastic Handshake: …As disappointed Falconets go away very empty handed on: 6-08-2010 04:11 PM
The Falconets who returned from Germany where they were engaged in the expedition to honour Nigeria at the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup arrived to the end of a rough deal yesterday night at the Presidential Villa where all they got for their efforts in reaching the final was a promise of scholarship. Received, with a sumptuous late dinner, by the First Lady of the country, Her Excellency Dame Patience Goodluck Jonathan, the girls were looking askance as they found out all they were going to get was scholarship to the university level, which many of them do not know if they were going to be able to make use of.

Expecting the occasion to be the night to herald an arrival of sorts for them, the girls seem lost in thought when the question of happiness was thrown at them last night after the dining had ended.

Every one of them talked to asked for anonymity, and none had a pleasant word for the Federal Government; one said: “Must it be the wife of the president to receive us because we are females? I’m sure if the Super Eagles had got to the semi-final of the World Cup in South Africa, they would have been met by the president.”

Another asked: “Are you sure this is the end of it? Are they saying I should put my training aside now and concentrate on gaining admission to school. Didn’t anybody tell them that to even continue in this game after attaining this level that we need money to buy our equipments?“

Rather than address the welfare of the girls post their near complete success after the World Cup, the Nigeria Football Federation was busy with the political side of the game with the NFF Acting President, Alhaji Aminu Maigari using the whole night to put the lie on reports that the Federal Government and the National Sports Commission were interfering with the day-to-day management and administration of football in the country.

Speaking at the reception organised for the Falconet at the Presidential Villa Abuja, Tuesday night by the First Lady Her Excellency Dame Patience Goodluck Jonathan, Maigari said the present administration at the NFF has been receiving tremendous support from the Government and has nothing to complain about. The Nigerian team won the silver medal at the just concluded FIFA U-20 World Cup. They lost 2-0 to host Germany in the final.

Maigari said of his non-interference campaign: ‘‘Contrary to assertions and impression in some quarters, the Government has not been meddling in the day-to-day running of Nigeria football.  Instead, what we have been receiving is support, co-operation and valuable advice where necessary. We wish to assure the Government that we have nothing to complain about.    We are in close collaboration with Government on all matters and this is good for the overall benefit of the game.’’

Maigari went on o commend the First Lady for her support, which he said had helped the team in so many ways to become the first Africa team to play in the final of a FIFA organized football championship. The NFF president also commend Her Excellency, Hajiya Amina Sambo, wife of the Vice President and the Honourable Minister/Chairman, National Sports Commission, Hon. Ibrahim Isa Bio

‘‘The Honourable Minister deserves plaudits for the way he has brilliantly overseen the sports terrain since coming into office.  We commend him for this constant support and understanding.  We equally praise the efforts of the Director General, NSC, Chief Patrick Ekeji and Director of the NSC toward development of football in Nigeria.’’ Conclude Maigari
18470  Forum / Relationships & Romance / Woman Denies Jobless Husband Sex on: 6-08-2010 02:24 PM
A commuter bus driver, Surajudeen Lukman has told an Agege Grage ‘A’ customary court, Lagos State, Nigeria, how his wife, Aishat allegedly denied him of sex after she discovered that he had lost his job.
Lukman revealed to the court that his estranged wife shunned every attempt he made to make love to her, alleging that she has started going out with another man.
He claimed that Aishat’s infidelity was discovered by a marabout who presides over a night prayer session she attends.
He stated that he began to notice strange behaviour of his wife even as he tried to discourage her from attending the night prayers.
The driver disclosed that he made several efforts to win back her love but she refused to change her wayward, ways and that was why he was seeking divorce.
Aishat in her defence denied all the allegations leveled against her by her husband, explaining that she decided to leave her husband house three years ago after realizing that he was not interested in her and the children of the marriage.
She said that feeding, clothing and payment of school fees fo their children had become her solely responsibility in the last three years.
She prayed the court to dissolve the marriage without delay while ordering Lukman to pay N19,000 for school fees and N25,000 for the children’s upkeep.
However, the court president having listened to both parties, adjourned the suit for further hearing and warned both of them to maintain absolute peace.

You know what irritates me? A woman who is totally sarcastic and if she’s sarcastic at the wrong time, then I’m done. I think there’s a time and place for everything. It’s like this, if I can tell you’re in a space and you could use an ear rather than a slick joke, then I’m listening! And so it should go both ways, if you can tell that I’m in a space and need a little time to vent or some tenderness and you say something smart . . . who’s laughing? Not me. Was I supposed to? Because I missed the joke. I’m, by no means, too stiff that I can’t take a joke but the slick sh*t, I am not with that. I can’t go. - Mark, 31

Bad breath. Bad breath is a deal breaker for me. I can’t stand that back of the throat, stale breath . . . you know that smell? It kind of makes me tear. I was on a date with this one chick and she was outwardly gorgeous but her breath was terrible. I brush my teeth twice a day and floss and it’s important, to me, that a woman takes care of her teeth! If your breath is foul then you don’t take care of your teeth which means you don’t take care of your body. Call me shallow but that’s a deal breaker. – Maurice, 28

I tell you what, my wife knows everything. You can’t tell her sh*t! If I told her the sky is blue she would tell me that it’s a shade of blue and not the traditional blue. Or if I’m going through something she’ll come up with all reasons why and my reasons don’t matter. She is the type of woman I used to run from and she can get under my skin like no other. I can’t take that from anyone else but her and that’s mainly because she’s so sweet and knows when to back off. But she’ll make sure to tell me all the things that were on her mind once things cool off. Yea, she’s a mess but I love her for it. - Anthony, 33

I don’t like for a woman to ask a lot of questions. I’m a man of few words and I take care of business at home and on the job, so don’t ask me where I’ve been if it’s obvious. Work. Don’t ask me who I’m with if I’ve given you no reason to be suspect. Don’t ask me what I’m bringing to the table if you’re not bringing anything but what’s between your legs. If you want to get to know me that’s one thing but the petty stalking is not a good look. - JT, 32

A woman who smokes is the worst. That is such a turn off. No man wants woman who smells like cigarettes all the time. And chances are, if she smokes cigarettes, she smokes weed and drinks too. I can tolerate a litlle bit of weed from time to time and if she drinks that’s cool too but those cancer sticks are disgusting and I will not date a woman that smokes. - Pierre, 27

When a woman says one thing and does another. That’s what I don’t understand about women, they hold men accountable for every word that comes out of our mouths but you can’t do that with women. It could be “I thought you said you cook” and I’ve never seen her lift a pot and she’ll come up with an excuse or say something like “well, give me a reason to cook.” Now I’m wrong for feeling mislead, right? 18473  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Policeman impregnates woman in detention cell on: 6-08-2010 06:38 AM

A policeman attached to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at the Borno State police headquarters in Maiduguri has allegedly impregnated a 24-year-old homicide suspect, Halima Abdu, while being detained in cell at the CID wing for investigations before her prosecution in court.

Daily Trust confirmed yesterday that the suspected policeman, whose name was only given as Abubakar from Biu Local Government Area, has since been arrested and detained by his colleagues after the Nigerian Prisons Service wrote to the state Commissioner of Police informing him that a suspect was confirmed to be pregnant while she was to be admitted into the maximum security prison in Maiduguri and on investigations, she said she was impregnated by a policeman.

The Fulani woman was brought to the CID where she identified the man and he was promptly detained by his colleagues with investigations still on, police sources said. The woman became pregnant sometime in January 2010. She was arrested and detained since 2009, shortly after she was accused of killing her three-day old baby boy whom she dumped in a public well at Balbaya village in Bayo Local Government Area of Borno State in June 2009.

Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Isa Azare, didn’t answer phone calls yesterday for comments and wasn’t traced but a source at the command said investigations were going on which may require a DNA test after the woman delivers next month, September- expectedly, to ascertain the paternity of the child.

Now about eight months pregnant, Halima told Daily Trust that she was impregnated by the police officer after she was transferred from Bayo Police Division to the CID. She said he lured her into having sex with him.

“He said he was going to help set me free if I agreed to have sex with him and we had sex right there inside the cell where I was kept. But after that, he failed to keep his promise. I did what I did to regain my freedom,” she said.

Daily Trust found out from prison sources that the pregnancy was discovered based on the suspicion of a female prison warden at the Admissions Board (a department within the prisons that is saddled with the responsibility of ascertaining conditions of new inmates and disclosing to them their rights).

A pregnancy test was conducted in March, 2010 and the woman was confirmed to be 12 weeks pregnant as at then. Halima had told Daily Trust that she was married to one Haruna Buba and lived at Unguwan Mai Ruwa in Jalingo, Taraba State, but was sent packing by her husband without a divorce letter while she was already pregnant for him.

Despite court intervention, he refused to divorce her, forcing her to go back in search of her parents who were until then resident at Juniji village in Bayo Local Government Area of Borno State.

She said she couldn’t locate her parents and on June 15, 2009, she was accommodated by one Hafsat, a house wife. “In the afternoon of June 17, 2009, I gave birth to a baby boy and decided to move with the baby,” she said.

She said in the evening of June 19, 2009, she stopped over at Balbaya village in Bayo and out of frustration and annoyance with how her husband treated her, and having nowhere to go or whom to turn to, she confessed, “I decided to drop the baby boy into a well.”

Daily Trust gathered that one Malam Bello Ali (Agambe) Chairman of water vendors at Balbaya was said to have sighted the body of the baby boy and rushed to report his discovery to the village head, Lawan Ali Muhammadu, who in turn reported the matter to the Balbaya police outpost. The case is to continue on August 11, 2010.
18474  Forum / The Buzz Central / Eucharia Anunobi yearns for 2nd marriage on: 5-08-2010 08:28 PM

When Charles Egwu, the Anambra State born ex-hubby of star actress Eucheria (UK) Anunobi absconded, leaving UK in the lurch with their only child Joshua, people started wondering why he did so; especially people who were close to UK.

Reason was that the Mbaise born diva was committed to that marriage. She did a lot of things you wouldn’t have ordinarily expected her to do because she wanted it to work. By all means, she put in her best to ensure her marriage would not hit the rocks. But maybe, just maybe, her best wasn’t good enough for Charles.

A movie producer once confided in me immediately after Eucharia’s marriage failed that he too was surprised that Charles could abscond because UK was proud of him; that she boasted to whoever cared to listen that her marriage would never crash because she was a good cook, hot in bed, expert in tidying the house and more importantly she wasn’t a lazy bone, so what would a man be looking for?

The movie producer felt pity for her when he started reading her divorce stories on the pages of soft sell magazines where she unveiled allegations of how she fed her ex-hubby, clothed him, paid the rent and was still loyal to him, yet the guy had the audacity to sleep with their housemaid and later took a walk.

But guess what? This bitter experience hasn’t stopped UK from yearning to remarry. She longs badly to have a man she could answer his name even after all she went through in her previous marriage. Need blame her for desiring a man she could call her own? Don’t you know nights can be drearily long and cold when you are alone? Don’t you know it is painful when a man you thought would spend the night with you suddenly springs up from bed, yanks off his pajamas and slips into his trouser ready to leave just because his wife calls on the phone requesting to have him?

So, it’s good she is opening up ‘Jare’, after all she is still young, strong, fashionable, and the vitals on her chest still firm. If you doubt it, take a closer look at the smaller picture and see what I mean. Jealous? Don’t grin with envy yet, just hear her out first. “Yes I hope to remarry. Why not? I’m young and beautiful, I am single, free and ready to mingle.”

She said the person may not necessarily be as tall as a model. So, guys don’t let your height stop you from filing your applications. “I wouldn’t mind if the man is not tall but he must have a good heart, with a spirit of God. He must be good looking but he must not be fat. He should love me and make me feel like a queen.”

Guys have you heard her? Once you have such attributes, please don’t waste time filing in your applications. This star believes that delay is dangerous. She is ready to offer her finger for the lucky man’s ring and there will be no need wasting time in the name of dating just to study him first. “You can never know the man you are dating until you begin to live with him. The only thing you need to do is to pray to God to give you the strength to continue with the ability to love. I’m not going to take off time to study anything or else you die of loneliness and depression. You have to keep on trying because life is about trying your luck.”

Did you say her next marriage would meet the same fate as her first? You misfired. She insisted that her first marriage was not meant to be after putting all her efforts to stop it from crashing. “I have been saying to myself that maybe the marriage wasn’t meant to be with my ex-hubby because I know I put in my best to make it work but it didn’t. I showed love to him but he didn’t like that kind of love but that doesn’t stop me from loving the next man I meet.”

Eucharia said she would love her next man foolishly because one needs to be foolish to remain in love. Smart gal, don’t you think so?

Some ladies in her shoes are just dying in silence. Somebody like Steph-Nora Okere, another actress whose hubby also deserted for no just cause. Her story and Eucharia’s are similar. The only difference is that her marriage didn’t bear fruit (no child). Stephanie’s hubby, Mr.
Falana, a movie producer took a walk when his lover in London delivered a child for him.

Later when Stephanie met him in London when she traveled with her colleagues for a movie shoot, Mr. Falana greeted the rest and shunned Stephanie. Poor lady, that nearly killed her. One thing about her is that she bottles up a lot. She would remind you in every interview that her marriage, her ex-hubby and whether she wants to remarry are out of bounds. Steph-Nora won’t tell you if she is ready to remarry, that’s her top secret.

But I think it’s high time she started toeing Eucharia’s steps, or what do you think?

Signs of what to expect in the days ahead as politicians prepare for the 2011 general elections manifested at the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party on Thursday. That day, pandemonium broke out at the party‘s headquarters in Abuja as policemen attached to the party seized charms from a member of the party from Osun State.

The member (name withheld) was surprised when policemen attached to the party insisted on conducting security checks on all of the party members before being allowed inside the party premises. On sighting the objects, the policemen were taken aback as some of them beat a retreat.

However, one of them who summoned courage moved swiftly to the politician and demanded to know why he had to come to the party office with such objects. Responding, he said the charms were for self -protection. This answer did not satisfy the policeman as he prodded further. This made the politician to say since he was coming from a far distance, he needed to fortify himself against any danger. Not interested in further discussion, the policemen asked him to wrap the charms, which he did and placed under a sofa at the security post within the premises.

This, however, did not go down well with the staff of the party and some visitors, who wondered whether it would be safe for people to sit on the sofa with the objects under it. A policeman later agreed to hold the charms, telling the politician to come and pick it from him anytime he was ready to leave.

Shaking his head several times, a police corporal turned to our correspondent and said he and his colleagues, especially those that would be part of the 2011 general elections needed to be ”fortified” ahead of the elections. Maybe, Jega needs to reverse his budget for the election to make provision for this miscellaneous item.

18476  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Family tragedy: 10 hospitalised after amala meal on: 5-08-2010 07:17 AM

After eating amala and vegetable soup, 10 members of the same family have been hospitalised at the General Hospital, Gbadaga, Lagos.

PUNCH METRO gathered that the incident, which occurred at Community Avenue, Magboro, Ogun State, on Sunday evening involved a man identified simply as Moses, his wife, Labake, their two sons, two daughters-in-law and four grandchildren.

The food was said to have been prepared by one of Moses‘ daughters-in-law.

However, a family source (name withheld), who was not at home when the incident occurred, said from what he gathered there was nothing to suggest foul play.

When our correspondent visited the hospital on Monday, Moses, his wife and the grandchildren were still on their hospital beds, while four of the victims had been discharged.

The source said, ”On Sunday evening, all the family gathered together, the daughters-in-law, my brothers and the grandchildren. Before that evening, they prepared a vegetable soup, which was planted in a garden within the compound where the family resides. They also prepared amala. Some of them ate the food. Of all those who were in the house, only one person did not eat the food and that person is the wife of my younger brother. It was not that she did not want to eat, but when they finished cooking, they had a night prayer, she went to watch movie first and later planned to take her own meal.

”It was during that time that this incident happened. Ten members of our family: four adults including my father, mother, my two younger brothers, my wife who just gave birth to a baby, my younger brother‘s wife, who was pregnant, and four grandchildren were affected

”My younger brother‘s wife prepared the meal. But she did not have the intention of harming anybody. People have been asking her why she did not eat the food. She is not the type that eats very early as such. She just wanted to watch a movie and later come to eat her own meal.”

According to the source, the first person, who showed sign of discomfort, was one of the grandchildren, who was immediate rushed to a nearby clinic before other grandchildren had a similar problem.

He said that health professionals in the clinic did their best, but on discovering the magnitude of the complications, they referred the patients to Gbagada General Hospital.

He said, ”One of the grandchildren complained of stomach ache. They rushed him to a nearby clinic, before coming back; the other grandchildren had suffered the same fate. My own mother who was trying to help them also complained of the same problem. The hospital said it was too much for them to handle. They had to be rushed to the General Hospital.

”On their way to the hospital, each of the remaining six had started having a feeling of food poisoning. It started from my wife, later, one of the grandchildren, after that, my youngest brother, Matthew, was also affected when we got to the expressway on our way to the hospital.

”They were admitted in the casual ward. It was while in the ward that my immediate younger brother had a similar experience. As my father was trying to help out, he, too, started complaining. That is how 10 people were hospitalised.”

He said although his mother was still on admission, the family was still worried about his father‘s health.

He said the family members as well as the medical team at the general hospital were doing their best to ensure that he recovered in time. He advised people to be more careful with what they eat.

Efforts to speak with the Medical Director were unsuccessful as he was said to be attending a meeting and other officials were not willing to speak on the incident.
18477  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / How illegal electricity connection killed teenager on: 4-08-2010 05:44 PM

Mrs. Iyabo Bakare had looked forward to August 2, 2010, the day her daughter, Fausat, was to write her Post-University Matriculation Examination with high hope. Her hope was hinged on her belief that Fausat would get admission into the university where she intended to read Accountancy.

Although the incident occurred on May 31, as sympathisers came to visit Iyabo on Monday, the visit triggered the emotion that was witnessed on the night Fausat died. Most of the sympathisers said the death of Iyabo, who would have been 19 by December, was avoidable.

Fausat, fondly called Mama, was electrocuted on the premises of 1, Adebiyi Close, Alagomeji, Yaba, Lagos State, shortly after returning from the church.

An eyewitness, who did not want her name mentioned, told PUNCH METRO that Fausat was electrocuted by illegally connected electricity under a TV antennae pole by one of the occupants of the building said to be illegal structure.

She said, “That day, rain fell heavily and everywhere was flooded. As Fausat was wading through the flood, the underground live cable shocked her. Unknown to her, she held on to the TV pole to support herself, and she was flung into the flood with such a terrific force.

“Before neighbours could rescue her, she had given up the ghost. When she was eventually rushed to a hospital (Noble Hospital, Olonode), a doctor confirmed she had died before getting to the hospital.”

The eyewitness said the incident angered the neighbours, who pounced on the apartment and vandalised it.

One of the occupants of the building, who was accused of the illegal electricity connection (name withheld), reportedly went to the police station to lodge a complaint that the property was vandalised.

”When the police came and found out true situation of things, they had to detain the suspect for illegal connection of electricity,” she said.

Speaking amid tears, Iyabo said Fausat‘s demise dealt a devastating blow to the family.

She corroborated the eyewitness‘ account and added that on the fateful day, the deceased with her other siblings, having returned from church, said they wanted to eat bread and tea.

She said Fausat went in company with other children in the neighbourhood to buy the items.

She recalled that as they were wading through the flood, she almost fell and had to ignorantly hold on to the antennae pole to support herself, not knowing that there was a live-wire running under the pole.

She said, ”As my daughter and those who accompanied her to buy the items were wading through the flood, she held to the pole for support and was immediately electrocuted. ”Ordinarily, people would think that the pole was just a TV antennae, but this was not so. There was an underground wire, which had been illegally connected. I think the man put the antennae probably to deceive the officials of the PHCN.”

Narrating the qualities of Fausat, Iyabo said she was beautiful, brilliant, intelligent, hard working and respectful, adding that the family had lost a jewel of an inestimable value.

She appealed to the Lagos State Government and the Yaba Local Council Development Area not to allow her daughter die in vain, saying that she wanted the illegal structure to be demolished and the underground cable removed so that other innocent people would not fall victims again.

When our correspondent visited the scene of electrocution, he observed that the entire building had been deserted. Also, the underground cable had been removed, while the alleged culprit was said to have bolted.

It was also observed that a sealing notice had been pasted on the building from a Customary Court in Yaba indicating that the building would be demolished soon.

18479  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Landlady Ejects Tenants Over Alleged Untidy Environment on: 4-08-2010 02:46 PM
The landlady of house number 19 on Obalodu Street, Ijeshatedo, Surulere in Itire-Ikate Local Council Development Area of Lagos State, South West Nigeria, has allegedly ejected her tenants over untidy environment.
Lagos Bulletin gathered that what led to the development began in December last year, when the landlady began to employ various means, including officials of the Ministry of the Environment, to eject the tenants.
She was alleged to have reported the tenants at the Onilegogoro office of the ministry and its officials later visited the house to seal it up, while a month’s quit notice was issued to the occupants.
According to investigation, the occupants of the house felt spited and decided they would not vacate the building, saying that the Ministry of the Environment did not have the right to force them out of the building.
The case, however, took another dimension a fortnight ago, when some officials of the ministry allegedly stormed the house and forcefully ejected its occupants, arrested six of them and took them to Ikoyi Prison without recourse to the police.
Efforts were made by the residents, especially wives of the arrested men by contracting a lawyer, who later made a  formal complaint at the Ijeshatedo Police Station.
One of the occupants, whose husband was taken to Ikoyi Prison alleged that the landlady connived with a man who claims to work in the ministry and arranged the seal up and arrest of the occupants of the building.
“As I speak to you now, my husband and others are in Ikoyi Prison for just no reason,” she told Lagos Bulletin.
Continuing, she said “the arrest and seal up was arranged and I doubt the authenticity of the officials. The landlady is just bent on ejecting us unlawfully and illegally, because she did not serve us any quit notice, instead, she employed the services of fake government officials from the Ministry of the Environment to forcefully eject us.”
Wives of the arrested persons are now appealing to the ministry to release their husbands, while promising to vacate the building as soon as their husbands regain freedom.
When Lagos Bulletin visited the Ijeshatedo Police Station, the Divisional Police Officer in charge, Mr. Haruna Yahaya, confirmed the incident but declined to comment on it, saying it is a civil matter that is already in court.
Also, the landlady could not be located as at the time of filing this report.
18480  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / EFCC In Nationwide Manhunt For Former Intercontinental Bank Boss on: 4-08-2010 02:43 PM
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has begun a manhunt for Erastus Akingbola, the former Managing Director of Intercontinental Bank plc who was speculated to have sneaked back into the country, PM NEWS has gathered.

The flamboyant bank chief fled the country after he was removed alongside chief executive officers of Afribank plc, Oceanic International Bank, Union Bank of Nigeria plc by the Central Bank of Nigeria about a year ago.
This followed a special audit ordered by Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, who was then just appointed the Governor of CBN.
The special audit had revealed that the chief executive officers had mismanaged their banks with the financial institutions collectively having about a trillion naira un bad loans in their books as a result of loans advanced to operators in the capital market and petroleum product importers.
The apex bank which doled out over N400 billion to bail out the banks to prevent them from being distressed had ordered the removal of the bank chiefs and their executive directors for mismanagement of the financial institutions.
The apex bank also ordered the trial of the bank chief executives on various fraudulent related charges. But while the other chief executives of the banks have been charged to court and are being prosecuted by the EFCC, Akingbola has been on the run forcing the EFCC to seek court order to seize his property.
However, indications are that the deposed chief executives of Intercontinental Bank may have returned to the country.
An unnamed assistant of the former boss of Intercontinental Bank was said to have confirmed the return of his boss to the country and his readiness to answer any charges against him. But the EFCC said the former bank chief executive is yet to report to the Commission.
Femi Babafemi, spokesperson for the anti graft agency however told PM NEWS that a manhunt is on for the former boss of Intercontinental Bank.
According to him, Farida Waziri, EFCC Chairman has already put operatives of the Commission across the country on the alert following rumours of Akingbola’s return to the country.
He added that the EFCC Chairman has also set up two teams, one each in Abuja and Lagos to smoke out the former ban chief from wherever he may be hiding.
