7  Forum / The Buzz Central / SEE The 12 Citizens Who Control Nigeria’s Economy on: 4-03-2014 12:11 PM

About 12 Nigerians currently control one-eighth (1/8) of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), a survey conducted by LEADERSHIP Weekend has revealed. In the same way, the 10 most capitalised companies listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) make up over one-fifth of the country’s economy with many of the major shareholders drawn from the ranks of the 10 richest Nigerians.

An analysis of the Forbes 50 Richest Africans’ List indicates that the 12 Nigerians listed therein currently have an estimated total net-worth of $33.68 billion (N5.38 trillion) which represents 12.8 per cent or about one-eighth of Nigeria’s GDP figure put at $262.6 billion (N42 trillion) as at December 2012.

The 10 most capitalised companies, on the other hand, together are valued N9.35trn ($58bn). Curiously,LEADERSHIP Weekend investigation shows that none of the top 10 capitalised companies is an oil company, since oil exploration and drilling companies are not quoted on the NSE. It is estimated that more than half of the country’s 12 wealthiest individuals made their money and are still making money from the oil industry.

However, with the envisaged rebasing of Nigeria’s GDP, it is expected that the country’s GDP figure will increase, thus resulting in a drop in the percentage of the nation’s economy controlled by these individuals and companies.

According to the Forbes African 50 Richest list released in November 2013, Aliko Dangote is Africa’s richest man with a net worth of $20.8 billion. This shows that Dangote alone controls about 8 per cent of the nation’s GDP while the remaining 11 people control only 4.8 per cent of the GDP.

But Dangote could see his share of the country’s wealth reduced to about 5 per cent after the base year for measuring the size of the economy is brought forward from the 1990s to better reflect companies that have sprung up in the last two decades. Economists expect the National Bureau of Statistics to put the GDP at around $400bn when NBS finally comes out with a figure.

One of Dangote’s companies, Dangote Cement, also comes tops as the most capitalised company with a market value of N3.92 trillion ($24.5bn), giving it close to 10 per cent of the GDP or about 6.25 per cent after rebasing.

As a subsidiary of the Dangote Group, the cement company got listed on the NSE in October 2010. The company announced a gross revenue of N103.03 billion with a profit of N54 billion as at September 30, 2013.

Telecom, banking and oil investor Mike Adenuga ranks fifth on the Forbes Africa Rich List and second in Nigeria with a net worth of $4.6 billion. This gives him 1 per cent

None of his companies, however, is on the top 10 of the most capitalised on the stock exchange with Globacom, his telecommunication company, the only major one that is completely privately owned and not listed on the exchange. The 61-year-old who hails from Ijebu, Ogun State, built his fortune in oil production and telecoms.

His mobile telecom outfit, Globacom, has over 25 million subscribers in Nigeria and the Republic of Benin. He also owns Conoil Producing, a large indigenous oil exploration company.

Having beaten Oprah Winfrey to be the richest black woman, Folorunsho Alakija, became Nigeria’s first female billionaire and the 13th richest African, thanks to a lucrative oil-producing asset with a total net worth of $2.5 billion. This oil giant contributes roughly 0.95 per cent to the GDP which could come to roughly 0.625 per cent when the NBS announces its new GDP figures.

After working as a secretary in a Nigerian merchant bank in the 1970s, Alakija quit her job to study fashion designing in England. She subsequently founded Supreme Stitches, a Nigerian fashion label that caters to upscale clientele, including Maryam Babangida, the late wife to Nigeria’s former military president, Ibrahim Babangida. The president awarded her company, Famfa Oil, an oil prospecting licence, OML 127, one of Nigeria’s most prolific oil blocks.

Abdulsamad Rabiu joins the ranks of Africa’s richest and the world’s billionaires for the first time based on success at his BUA Group, whose biggest businesses are sugar refining and cement. BUA Group’s annual revenues are estimated at $2 billion. The group also does business in real estate, steel, port concessions, manufacturing, oil and gas and shipping.

After calculating Rabiu’s worth, Forbes magazine said his “stake in his commodities and cement empire, plus his real estate holdings in South Africa and London, are worth $1.2 billion, up from $670 million a year ago, primarily due to better information on Rabiu’s holdings and the revenue of his companies.” While not all his investments are traced to Nigeria, with $1.2bn to his name, Rabiu gets to have a say in how the country’s economy is managed, at least a 0.45 per cent and maybe 0.3 per cent after rebasing.

Delta State-born Nigerian banker Jim Ovia ranks the 28th richest African and fifth richest Nigerian. He founded the Zenith Bank Group, one of Nigeria’s largest financial services groups, with a market capitalisation of more than $4.5 billion (N728.4bn).

With a net worth of $900 million, Ovia is Zenith bank’s largest individual shareholder, with a 9 per cent stake. This gives Ovia a 0.34 per cent share of the current GDP and about 0.225 per cent of the expected figure. The bank on the other hand has a 1.72 per cent share of $262bn official GDP figure and could come down to 1.125 per cent after rebasing.

Ovia owns dozens of prime properties in pricey Nigerian neighbourhoods like Victoria Island and Ikoyi. Ovia also runs Visafone, a mobile telecoms outfit, and is partnering with Marriott to build a new five-star hotel in Lagos.

Retired Nigerian general and former defence minister Theophilus Danjuma ranks the sixth richest in Nigeria and 29th in Africa with a net worth of $700 million. His share of GDP stands at 0.267 per cent and could later become 0.175 per cent. He chairs South Atlantic Petroleum (Sapetro), a Nigeria-based upstream oil and gas exploration and production company which was awarded an oil block (OML 130) by the Sani Abacha regime in the 1990s, and in 2006 Danjuma sold a 45 per cent stake to Chinese oil company CNOOC for $1.75 billion, retaining a 5 per cent stake. In 2011, Danjuma said he had $500 million left from selling the block to CNOOC. He donated it to the TY Danjuma Foundation, a philanthropic organisation that is catering to educational, health and microcredits causes for the downtrodden. Danjuma also owns real estate in Lagos, including SAPETRO Towers.

Oba Otuddeko, industrialist and former president of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, who chairs Nigeria’s Honeywell Group, with interests in oil and gas, flour milling, real estate and marine transportation, is next after Danjuma on the Nigerian list but ranks 33rd richest in Africa with a net worth of $575 million. Honeywell Flour is publicly traded. He also owns a minority stake in mobile phone giant Bharti Airtel’s Nigerian operations, and a stake in Radisson Blu, a sprawling oceanfront hotel in Lagos, Nigeria.

Hakeem Belo-Osagie and Mohammed Indimi both share the 34th position with a Tanzanian with a net worth of $550 million.

Belo-Osagie is the chairman and a significant shareholder of the Nigerian operations of United Arab Emirates-based telecom provider Etisalat, Nigeria’s fastest growing mobile telecom network, with a subscriber base of 17 million, up from six million three years ago. Etisalat’s growth is the catalyst for Belo-Osagie’s increased fortune, up by $150 million from a year ago. He now controls 0.21 per cent of the economy.

Mohammed Indimi, chairman of Oriental Energy Resources, a private Nigerian oil exploration and production company, has a net worth of $550 million. His contribution to GDP could be as much 0.13 per cent after NBS announces its estimates of the country’s GDP. Oriental, which Indimi founded in 1990, has three projects in the offshore Nigerian oil and gas industry, including the Ebok Field, which produces 35,000 barrels a day. It shares ownership of the projects with U.K.-listed oil exploration company Afren Plc. The Ebok Field was awarded to Oriental Energy Resources in 2007 by a joint venture between Exxon-Mobil and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

The 10th richest Nigerian who ranks 38 on the African list with a net worth of $500 million is Sani Bello, who is the founder of Amni International Petroleum Development Company, an oil exploration company with a 50 per cent interest in the Okoro Setu oil field, located in shallow waters offshore Nigeria. With half a billion dollars to his name, he contributes 0.19 per cent of GDP which could later be revised to 0.125 per cent.

Amni shares ownership of the Okoro Setu field with London-listed exploration firm Afren; production averages 18,200 barrels a day. Bello is also a minority stakeholder in mobile telecom firm MTN Nigeria. He is a former Nigerian military governor from Kano State and a one-time ambassador to Zimbabwe. His Sani Bello Foundation provides small loans and grants to young Nigerian entrepreneurs.

The other two are Femi Otedola and Tunde Folawiyo with net worth of $410 million and $400 million respectively.

Top 10 most capitalised quoted companies as at January 10, 2014, on the Nigerian Stock Exchange are:

8  Forum / The Buzz Central / Don’t Call me Mrs – Chimamnda Adichie Warns Journalist on: 4-03-2014 12:08 PM

So award winning writer Chimanda-Adichie has many speculating if her marriage with U.S based doctor, Dr. Ivara Esegee is intact after she told a Sunnewsonline journalist to address her as “Miss” not “Mrs”.

Mrs Chimamanda Adichie, wel-come back to Nigeria…
Before we start, please, I just want to say that my name is Chimamanda Adichie. That’s how I want it; that’s how I’m ad-dressed, and it is not Mrs but Miss. Ms: that’s how I want it. I am saying this, because I just got a mail from my manager this morning. It seems that there are people who attended the church service, and they wrote about it, addressing me as Mrs. Chimamanda (Esega). I didn’t like that at all. So my name is Chimamanda Adichie, full stop!

You mean?
This is because it is also responsible that people be called what they want to be called.

In one of your interview published in the some newspapers, (including an interview in Sunday Sun with Akubuiro in 2007), you said you’re a feminist. Can you throw more light on that?

Oooh! Is that when I said that, because that quote has followed me everywhere in the world? That’s why I don’t like granting interviews, because whatever you say, in 20 years, you’ll still be quoted. Oh I said I’m a feminist? You know, what I meant was that: you know when people hear feminism, many things come into their head. What I wanted him to understand is that feminism doesn’t mean that you want to be a man. I’m a feminist, I’m a female; a feminist meaning that I want to look like a woman, but I want the equal respect that a man has. I think that human being should be respected based on their achievements and not based on whether you’re a man or woman. But, since I said that, everywhere I go, people are asking about that. I went to Australia, and they had read that; they knew about that. I was on stage in a hall full of people. They said they had a special present for me, and they brought in purse. I just started laughing. It was hilarious. But this is why you should be careful what you say. It was so funny. All the way in Australia!

You started by telling me that you’re not “Mrs.”…
(cuts in) My name is Chimamada Adichie. If you want to put label for me, put Ms.

But people know that you’re married. As an Igbo girl, you know our culture…

(Cuts in again) What does our culture do? Let me tell you about our culture. This thing that you are calling our culture –that when you marry somebody, you’ll start call-ing her Mrs. Somebody –is not our culture; it is Western culture. If you want to talk about our culture, you need to go to people in real Igbo land. But it is true. My grandfather’s name is David. His name is also Nwoye. They call him Nwoye Omeni. Omeni was his mother. You know why? It is to help distinguish him, because there are often many wives. So, it was his mother that they used to identify him. They know that all of these people came from the same compound, but whose child is this one. You may go and ask people who is Nwoye Omeni, and they’ll tell you it is my grandfather. So, conversation about culture is a long one. I don’t even want to have it.

But, at what point would you change your name?

Yes; because it’s all fused. You cannot then come and impose something on somebody. Nobody should come and impose something on somebody, because, if you come and tell me it is our culture, I’ll tell you it is not our culture. Where do you want to start counting? Do you want to start counting in 1920, or do you want us to start counting from 1870?

But culture is dynamic…

Exactly my point, which is why this is new. If culture is dynamic, you cannot use it as conservative tool. We can-not then say it has to be this because it is our culture. My point is that it is a new thing. Things are changing. We live in a world now where women have a right to bear the name they want. So, we cannot say this is how we do it. If some women want to do it that way, that’s fine! God bless them. Some women won’t do it. I am one of those women, and nobody will come to use culture to tell me that I should do what I don’t want to do.

9  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / ProsTitutes demand legal recognition of their trade, What Do You Think? on: 3-03-2014 05:25 PM

Some of the prostitutes told P.M.NEWS that the time had come for the Nigerian government to grant them their due recognition and further recognize that as human beings trying to keep body and soul going, the ‘profession’ should be considered legitimate enough to put a stop to its discrimination and stigmatisation.

“See, many people, including you, do not see us as human beings. In your mind, we are a condemned set of Nigerians who sell their bodies so cheaply, but that thought is not right,” Jane, a lady from eastern Nigeria who operates at a brothel close to the railwayline in Agege, told our correspondent.

“In some countries abroad, sex workers pay taxes. There is no discrimination, they can sue and even have streets, mainly in red light districts allocated to them to carry out their trades. “But here in Nigeria, we are faced with rejection from the society, serious harassment by the police, and victimisation by our customers.

“You can imagine a customer who rushes into this place in a desperate bid to ease himself, jumps at one of us after a bargain and rides like a horse only to renege on the agreement on how much he should pay. If we have our rights, we could call for his arrest without shame or molestation from security agents and other Nigerians,” she explained.

The International Sex Workers’ Rights Day is marked on 3 March every year to call the world’s attention to the plight of sex workers and demand for their rights. With the red umbrella as its symbol, the day came into existence in 2001 with a protest of over 25,000 sex workers organised by the Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee in India.

15  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / We Don’t Have N500m Ransom For Jonathan’s Uncle — Family on: 2-03-2014 10:36 PM

The kidnappers of Chief Inengite Nitabai, an uncle to President Goodluck Jonathan, have reportedly insisted on N500m ransom before the victim can be freed.
On Friday, the kidnappers spoke with the family and demanded N500m ransom as a condition for the release of Nitabai, Jonathan’s adopted father
.
The demand, which the family said was outrageous, has thrown the members of Jonathan’s compound into panic. When our correspondent called one of the children of the victim on Saturday night, he said family members were still apprehensive. The child, who craved anonymity, said the kidnappers’ demand had caused serious tension in the family.

He said, “The amount the kidnappers are demanding is too high. Where do they expect us to raise such money? “I am appealing to them to release our father. He is a good man; a God-fearing individual and symbol of peace in Otuoke and its environs.” The abductors had threatened on Friday to kill Nitabai if the family failed to produce the money as soon as possible. It was learnt that the Nitabais had constituted a committee to evaluate the demand, establish negotiations with the abductors and facilitate the victim’s release.

“The kidnappers contacted the family four days after and demanded the sum of N500m. Negotiations are ongoing between the family and the captors of Nitabai,” the child stated.

18  Forum / The Buzz Central / How Jim Iyke Used And Dumped me Like a filthy rag After 6years – Ex Girlfriend on: 2-03-2014 07:49 AM

After Reading Jim Iyke’s ex Keturah Hamilton’s tearful & emotional interview you can’t help but feel for her.

My heart goes out to her, she spent 6 years of her life with a man who promised her the world, promised he would marry her, after 6 years she got nada, not even a phone call or text to end the relationship. According to Keturah, Jim ended the relationship in a very cold & callous way without contacting her.

Instead she says he used her & dumped her like a filthy rag!
Read below the not so nice things she has to say about bad boy Jim Iyke & his new boo Ghanaian actress Nadia Buari
I played along in the reality show as if I truly was a jealous and crazy lover. It was an act, but now I feel as if Jim set me up. He is a wicked man. I stood by him through all his troubles and tribulations. I helped bring him to the limelight when the light of his career was dimming. He is an ingrate and I leave him to God.

On Jim & his new boo Nadia Buari
They have been hooking up in Ghana. They were together at Tuface’s wedding and appear to be everywhere together. I just can’t believe Jim would be this ungrateful – after all I have done for him. I have not been able to accept this and I am truly in a state of shock. If Jim could treat me the way he did, after six years of being there for him, supporting him, encouraging him in all that he did, then I wish Nadia the best of luck.

How Jim used & dumped her
Jim was supposed to come to New York and stay for six months, during which time, he would go to an acting school  here in New York and then we would move to Los Angeles and get married and pursue our acting dreams. I was looking forward to that with eagerness and then he just walked away” she began to sob.

She goes on to say
These days, I ask God: Why has thou forsaken me? How can a man with whom we had gone through the highs and the lows – a man who had professed so much undying love for me over the past six years just walk away like that? I don’t know what happened and I wish I could put a finger on it.
If all this is true all i can say is karma is a female dog. Jim & Nadia I’ll advise you to watch your back, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned & a Jamaican woman scorned? You do not want to mess with.
