2  Forum / The Buzz Central / Biography: Aliko Dangote (A lesson for African entrepreneurs) on: 22-03-2014 12:23 PM
Alhaji Aliko Dangote represents what African businessmen should be. He is an example for aspiring entrepreneurs across the continent. Start small, aim very high, identify and take advantage of opportunities. Do not be discouraged by challenges.   Give, and give generously to help others make progress.
That was how Aliko Dangote, who started out as a trader of commodities, became Africa’s leading businessman, with companies in 16 countries, employing over 10,000 people. In the process, he became the richest African and black man on the planet, with a personal fortune of $25 billion. It is this feat that makes him eminently qualified, and deservingly recognised as the Vanguard Newspaper African Personality of the Year.
Born with the Midas touch
When on 10th of April 1957, a male child was born in Kano; little was heard or known of the child. Like Shakespeare wrote in one of his epic books, Julius Caesar, ‘when beggars die there are no comets seen but the heavens themselves blaze the death of Princes’. In some dynasties and royalties, when kings are born, they are celebrated.

That was not the case in Kano when Aliko Dangote was born. He was just like any other child. He, like other children, learnt to crawl, walk and run. He cried like others but at school, he was focused on what he chose to do.
He probably discovered his destiny early enough and keyed into it. In his words: “I can remember when I was in primary school, I would go and buy cartons of sweets (sugar boxes) and I would start selling them just to make money. I was so interested in business, even at that time.” Dangote, right from when he was young had his eyes on business.
He had always, as all real entrepreneurs do, seen opportunities where others see high risk and failure. In an atmosphere of difficulty, when others would have given up, he took the risk. He is known for taking great risks in a highly risky environment.
He has grown to have a Midas touch in every business he ventured into. He started as a commodity trader, he made success of it, he entered into sugar refining, and he made success of it. He set up cement manufacturing; he has made a huge success of it.
Now he is venturing into petroleum product refining. His hard work has set him apart to the envy of his detractors who only see him as a beneficiary of government waiver and concession. But there are others who have had the same benefit but could not make anything tangible from it.
That has brought success to him, his family, state and his country. He has invested in the various sectors of the Nigerian economy and across the African continent thus creating millions of direct and indirect jobs in the continent of Africa. He has become a business colossus that bestrides the global business environment, making him the richest African today.
Undeterred by Risks & Uncertainties
In one of the articles written by Jonathan Berman in Harvard Business review entitled; American CEOs should Stop Complaining about Uncertainty, he wrote how uncertainty has not deterred Aliko Dangote from investing in Nigeria and across Africa. In the write-up, Barman said: “This month, the chief executive officers of America’s biggest companies went on a media blitz to decry the uncertainty caused by the fiscal cliff. In such uncertain times, they say, they are hesitant to invest in the US economy.
I departed Washington in the midst of these rumblings to attend a forum of Africa’s leading CEOs. Here’s a quick sample of the scheduled participants: Aliko Dangote, CEO of Dangote Cement. He’s building a $2 billion fertilizer plant in his native Nigeria. He recently announced the next two growth markets for sizeable investment by his group are Iraq and Myanmar.
“For Dangote and many other executives in frontier markets, uncertainty is not the inhibitor of opportunity. It is the condition in which opportunity arises. That is a reasonable perspective to look for in American CEOs as well.” The moving force behind private enterprise all over the world is what Adam Smith described as the invisible hand that allocates resources in the most uncertain environment.

3  Forum / The Buzz Central / Vogue Thinks Kim & Kanye Are the #WorldsMostTalkedAboutCouple But Twitter Dosent on: 21-03-2014 08:08 PM

This is what happens when you include a hashtag on the cover of your magazine. Now you know, Vogue.
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are locked in an intimate embrace on the cover of Vogue's April issue, with the title #worldsmosttalkedaboutcouple proudly(?) displayed underneath them. And of course, Twitter snatched that hashtag right up and started posting their own ideas of who should actually be the #worldsmosttalkedaboutcouple. The results, as always, are just inspiring.
We're not saying we would have preferred if Vogue featured these couples on the cover instead of Kimye, but we're also not not saying that. Especially since a lot of these photos do not involve hands perched uncomfortably close to someone's nether regions. Just sayin'.
So check out Twitter's ideas for the #worldsmosttalkedaboutcouple, and let's see if we can't get some of them on Vogue's June cover.
This photo is basically '80s hair porn.
Only because Kermit and Miss Piggy is the only couple that could possibly be more in love than Kim and Kanye.
Why not Bey and Jay, Vogue?! Damn.
We're not sure what's happening in this photo, but we are sure we love it.
#turnbacktime
We all know Bert and Ernie are more than friends.

Is that the same dress that Kim is wearing on the cover? It's very gauche to recycle an outfit, girl.
Aw, remember when the camera cut away right before Christina kissed Madonna because they wanted to get Justin Timberlake's reaction to Britney and Madonna's makeout? Good times.
The chemistry between these two is off the charts!
Now we can't stop picturing Matthew McConaughey hugging Woody Harrelson from behind. But we like it. A lot.
Maggie Smith has more class in her pinkie nail than most couples could ever dream of possessing.
She came in like a wrecking ball, you guys.
Now there is the sexiest couple on this planet. Your argument is invalid.
Well done, Twitter. You never fail to bring us joy with your hashtag mockery.

8  Forum / The Buzz Central / Rihanna's Ex-Accountant Fires back after $9 million Law Suit on: 21-03-2014 12:18 PM

The gloves are off in the fight between Rihanna and her ex-accountant -- the money man is now firing back in their legal battle over $9 million the singer claims she lost on his watch ... calling her a financially impaired moron.

Accountant Peter Gounis filed the response to Rihanna's lawsuit, insisting he was hired to record and manage her financial accounts -- NOT give her rudimentary spending advice.

Gounis claims Rihanna blew through millions of her own money by going on endless shopping sprees -- buying roomfuls of designer shoes, clothes, and jewelry -- and throwing extravagant parties for herself. He also claims she bailed on an expensive tour to shoot "Battleship," which turned out to be a massive failure.

And despite Rihanna's accusations, Gounis insists he never directed Rihanna to buy a dilapidated house.

But even ignoring all that, Gounis says, "Was it really necessary to tell her that if you spend money for things you will end up with the things, and not the money?"

Gounis wants Rihanna's lawsuit thrown out.

9  Forum / The Buzz Central / Chris Brown: "I CAN GET OUT OF JAIL" For The Right Price on: 21-03-2014 10:23 AM

It sure seemed Chris Brown was checkmated -- sitting in jail as the clock ticks for his D.C. assault trial that could trigger a probation violation in the Rihanna case that could land him in prison for 4 years .... but TMZ has learned his lawyer has found a way out of the hole ... by paying LOTS OF MONEY.

Sources connected with the D.C. assault case tell TMZ ... Chris' lawyer, Mark Geragos, has contacted the lawyer for the man who claims Chris assaulted him in D.C., breaking his nose, and offered him a BIG FAT CHECK.

We're told Geragos is gunning for a civil settlement ... which could very well mean the broken nose guy would tell prosecutors he no longer has an interest in pursuing the criminal case.  And our sources say prosecutors are aware of the civil settlement negotiations.

We're told Geragos may have already sealed the deal but if not ... it should be done in a day or 2.

10  Forum / The Buzz Central / Tyrese Gibson Opens Up About Being On Fast & Furious 7 After Paul Walker's death on: 21-03-2014 09:57 AM

The movie must go on. Paul Walker's Fast & Furious costars headed back to work this month to finish filming the seventh installment of their world-famous franchise. Production was shut down after the actor's fatal car accident on Nov. 30, but the cast is now back in Atlanta to wrap things up -- and they're definitely feeling his absence.
"This is the only movie I ever worked on where we are all real close even after the movie is over," Tyrese Gibson told TooFab of the Fast & Furious crew. "It wasn't just losing a costar, he was family for real. That's why it took so long to recover."

Gibson, 35, went on to say that he's not the same person he was when they left off with production several months ago. "Hopefully no one else is hurt during filming," he added.
"God's grace is all we have," he continued. "Before we start filming we are going to have a strong prayer. That will be the start, before we film anything. That's what is needed for us to do Fast & Furious 7."

Well, that and some new inspiration. Vin Diesel, who plays Dom in the franchise, wrote on his Facebook page that he's approaching this seventh film with a different kind of motivation.
"The transition into that Dom state of mind has always been an interesting one," he explained. "Only this time there is added purpose, a collective goal to make this [movie] the best one in the series." The action star, 46, also shared an old photo of himself with Walker, writing simply, "We are going back in this month, Pablo...I know you are with me."

Walker was just 41 when he died in a car accident with another friend, Roger Rodas, last November. After his death, screenwriters scrambled to rework the script for Fast & Furious 7. "They're having to rewrite, they're having to do whatever they're having to do to deal with the situation," actor Kurt Russell said, according to the BBC. (Russell, 63, was cast as a father figure to Walker's character, Brian O'Connor.)
"It's catastrophic," he continued. "It's the worst thing that could happen to a movie." Then, qualifying his statement, he added: "But it's not as bad as what happened to Paul."

11  Forum / The Buzz Central / Emeka Ike Dumps His Wife on: 20-03-2014 11:20 PM

Things are no longer at ease in the home front of embattled Nollywood actor cum educationist, Emeka Ike, as we hear that the cracks earlier noticed in his marriage has taken it's toll and the couple have gone their separate ways.

This is another tale of Nollywood marriage break-up and we hear that the reason for this separation might not be far from domestic violence on the part of the dark skinned actor, who is said to be in the habit of battering his wife over minor disgreements.

Emeka who has been in the news for all the wrong reasons in recent times, including the closure of his school and his battle with his landlord over house rent, is reported to have relocated to Abuja, Nigeria's federal capital, with two out his four kids.

We also gather that life is becoming pretty difficult for the wife and the remaining kids as a result of Emeka's neglect of his family.

After several attempts to call Emeka or his publicists failed, Pulse.ng put a call to one of Emeka Ike's close friends and he gave us a different angle to the story.

This is what he said:

"I may not rule out a break-up of Emeka's marriage because his wife has taken more than any ordinary woman can take."

"Emeka is my friend and I know a lot of happenings in his home. He is hot tempered and beats up the poor woman at the slightest provocation and she may have had enough."

"But on the other hand, Emeka's relocation to Abuja may also arise from the fact that he got a contract from the federal government two years ago and has been shuttling between Lagos and Abuja. Even when he had issues with his school, he had to fly in from Abuja to settle it."

"But on the marriage, I can't say, though I cannot also rule out a separation because of the way Emeka brutalizes his wife and cows everyone in his household. I have told him several times that he needs anger management."

Be that as it may, we are still expecting to hear from Emeka's direct camp.

12  Forum / Sports / Guardiola: My wife causes me more trouble than Robben on: 20-03-2014 09:21 PM

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola has joked that he has more trouble justifying his rotation policy to his wife Cristina than the likes of Arjen Robben.

The former Barcelona coach often rests high-profile names such as Dutchman due to the Bavarians' busy schedule.

However, Guardiola's spouse believes that her husband would be better of sticking with a winning lineup.

"My wife Cristina often complains about my tactics," the former Spain international told reporters. "She keeps on telling me that I should stick with the players who won the last match.

"Explaning her my rotation system is much harder than telling Arjen Robben that he will have to settle for a spot on the bench ..."

Guardiola is widely regarded as one of the top coaches in the game but he has admitted that he was not sure he would enjoy such a successful beginning to his Bayern career.

"There's not a single coach out there who can guarantee success at the start of the season," he pointed out. "There is no magic formula to win.

"Football would be like a shopping mall if that was the case. Everybody would come in and just pick the part he needs. But there would be no challenge in that."

Guardiola replaced Jupp Heynckes as Bayern boss last summer and the Bavarians are currently perfectly place to successfully defend their Bundelisga, DFB-Pokal and Champions League titles.
