The Enugu State Police Command says a student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, on Saturday, drank a substance believed to be ‘Sniper’ insecticide in a bid to take her life.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Ebere Amaraizu, disclosed in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Sunday that the student was, however, responding to treatment.
Amaraizu said that the attempted suicide happened at 8.00 a.m. on Saturday. “The victim, Miss Chinwendu Odoh, 24, is from Enugu Ezike in Igbo-Eze North LGA and a 200 level microbiology student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
“She allegedly drank a substance believed to be ‘Sniper’ insecticide with a view to taking her life. “Odoh was, however, promptly rushed to the Royal Cross Hospital, Nsukka, where she is being revived,’’ he said. According to the spokesman, a full scale investigation into the incident was being carried out by the police. “Information from some sympathisers are pointing toward depression over an unresolved issue. “The victim is now responding to treatment in the hospital,’’ he said

The 'live sex' witnessed in the ongoing Big Brother Naija reality show seems to have gotten to the Federal Government as it has lodged a complaint with the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC). Cameroonian Navy has begun a search for an unknown number of Asian and European seamen who were kidnapped Thursday aboard a vessel in the Gulf of Guinea off the southern port of Douala. “(They) were abducted this morning,” said the source, who gave no details about the number or nationality of the kidnap victims. The name of the vessel was also not given.
“The kidnappers are probably Nigerian pirates,” the source said. “Cameroonian forces have launched search operations.” An official at Douala port confirmed the kidnappings, and said the seamen had been taken after their ship came under attack.
“We don’t know the number of abducted seamen for the time being,” the official said. The Gulf of Guinea, whose coastline stretches in a huge arc from Liberia to Gabon, is notorious for piracy as well as oil theft, illegal fishing and human and drugs trafficking.
According to the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) 62 seafarers were taken hostage or abducted in the area in the first half of 2019. The Gulf of Guinea accounted for 73 percent of kidnappings and 92 percent of hostage-takings at sea worldwide, it says.
The 17 countries in the Gulf of Guinea and adjacent regions have limited surveillance and maritime defence capabilities. They have been trying for several years to bolster their means of intervention and to put in place closer collaboration.

Nigerians spend more time on social media than citizens of most countries, according to a survey conducted by Global Web Index, a market research company. In the survey, 575,000 internet users aged 16-64 were interviewed across 46 markets. The social media networks considered in the survey include Facebook, Whatsapp, Twitter, Facebook Messenger, LinkedIn, Skype, Snapchat, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, among others. The findings revealed that Nigerians spend an average of three hours 30 minutes on social media, coming second after citizens of the Philippines who spend an average of four hours one minute per day.
Nigeria is followed by Mexico whose citizens spend three hours 10 minutes, then Turkey with an average of three hours five minutes. The high level of social media engagements in these countries could be as a result of the youthful population and the younger demographics of the markets. In Nigeria, the unemployment rate might have also contributed to the high social media engagement, as Nigerians have sought ways to monetise activities on social media. Lots of trading activities, such as sales of clothes, shoes, and other items are being carried out on social media. Services such as social media influencing, media commentating, comedy, dance, among others are also being promoted through social media. A 49-year-old self-acclaimed Evangelist, Mr Akinjide Durojaiye got more than he bargained for as he was beaten for allegedly stealing two new mobile phones from a shop he preached at in Ibadan, Oyo state capital. Mrs. Winifred Ekanem Oyo-Ita, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, was on Wednesday interrogated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged N3billion contract scam and for alleged abuse of duty tour allowance, money laundering and stealing of government funds.
According to the Nation after a four-day grilling during which she was in custody of the anti-graft agency beginning from August 8, Mrs Oyo-Ita landed in the hospital after being granted administrative bail. She has been given restricted access to visitors at the private hospital in Jabi area of Abuja where she is receiving treatment.
Although the administrative bail was granted so that she could be reporting for further interrogation from her office, she has not been able to return to the anti-corruption agency’s office since she was allowed to go.

The EFCC has blocked the account and has initiated the process of obtaining an interim forfeiture clause to seize the cash.
Preliminary findings confirmed that about N3billion has been traced to the Head of Service which came in through proxy companies.
Detectives, it was gathered, uncovered slush funds linked to the Head of Service while probing the activities of a former Minister under who she served as Permanent Secretary.
A source said: “Preliminary investigation confirmed that she used different fronts or cronies to obtain contracts from Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs)
“While tracing embezzlement by the ex-Minister, detectives stumbled on diversion of funds into proxy companies which the Head of Service has relationship with.
“The startling revelations made detectives to dig further into her activities as a Permanent Secretary and Head of Service.
“There were proofs of how she secured contracts through proxy firms from some ministries including Special Duties, Power, Works and others. There was a case of abuse of office because there was evidence of pressure on Permanent Secretaries to get her contracts. She moved from one ministry to the other.
“Investigators also discovered that she was involved in falsification of Duty Tour Allowance (DTA) and estacodes
The source added: “About N600million has been traced to the account of one of her aides. This illicit account has been blocked and the EFCC is in the process of invoking interim forfeiture clause.”
Sections 28 and 34 of the EFCC (Establishment Act) 2004 and Section 13(1) of the Federal High Court Act, 2004 empower the anti-graft agency to apply Interim Assets Forfeiture Clause.
“Section 28 of the EFCC Act reads: “Where a person is arrested for an offence under this Act, the Commission shall immediately trace and attach all the assets and properties of the person acquired as a result of such economic or financial crime and shall thereafter cause to be obtained an interim attachment order from the court.”
Another source said: ”We have only covered a fraction of the preliminary findings, she will still have to return after completing her treatment.”
But there was a pall of silence in government circle because of the sensitive nature of the EFCC’s findings.
Top government officials, who were aware of the grilling, kept mute in anticipation of a soft landing for the head of service.
But going by precedent, she is likely to be suspended from office by President Muhammadu Buhari, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
A source added: “Although she is a former official of the defunct Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) where she worked under President Muhammadu Buhari, the law will take its course if she is indicted by EFCC.
A brief on the Head of Service on the website of the Public Service Institute of Nigeria reads: “Winifred has an impressive and well-documented work experience spanning over 30 years, including being the first female indigenous Managing Director/CEO of Cross River Estates Limited, between 1993 and 1995.
“She later transferred her service to the federal civil service where she was appointed to the rank of Assistant director in July, 1997 and rose to the position of a director, Finance and Accounts in January, 2009 in the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation.
“Mrs. Oyo-Ita Winifred was appointed to the position of Federal Permanent Secretary on the 16th of March, 2013 and posted to the Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs as the pioneer Permanent Secretary of the re-established Ministry.
“She was redeployed to the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology in April, 2014. She was appointed as the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation in acting capacity in October 2015 and confirmed in January 2016 by President Muhammadu Buhari.”
The Speaker of Students’ Union Government Parliament, Bayonne Simeon, of Ken Saro Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori, Rivers State has bemoaned the insecurity of students living off-campus.
“No fewer than 20 female students had been r-ped in the last one month, while robbery attacks are on daily basis”, he said. Some of the victims also told P.M.News that the attackers target only students living off campus.
They complained that despite repeated reports at Bori Police station, nothing has been done and students are left to their fate. Simeon, the Speaker of Student Union Government Parliament and Manson Dumlebabari, the Chief Judge of Student Union Government of KenPoly also expressed disappointment over the situation.
They called on the Civil Rights Council to draw the attention of the Police to their suffering due to incessant robbery of students and r-pe of female students by gunmen.
However, the Police in Bori claimed they have not received any complaint from the students, The Police Public Relations Officer of Rivers state Police Command, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, a lawyer, said the Divisional Police Officer,DPO, of Bori said no such report of r-pe and robbery was reported at the station.
