2  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Caught on camera: Moment thieves surround a tourist in Paris and take his money on: 22-04-2014 10:53 PM

This is the moment an aggressive gang of Roma young thieves surround a middle-aged tourist near Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris and took the money he just withdrew from a cash point.

Such scenes have become so common in the French capital that police last week called for the 'systematic eviction' of Roma. Groups of thieves, many of them teenagers, swarm around the main tourist landmarks day and night, UK Daily Mail reports. Continue...

The middle-aged victim turns around in a fright as the thieves swarm around him
'They respect nobody – they just want money or anything else they can steal,' said another tourist who witnessed the incident at the cashpoint between Notre Dame and the Louvre museum, in the 1st arrondissement.
"It might have been Easter, but the gangs were everywhere,' she said. 'One minute the man was making a cash withdrawal, the next he was a crime victim.
'If the police come anywhere near the Roma, they just laugh and then run off. Areas are becoming completely lawless.'

Paris is the most popular tourist destination in the world.

The utterly fearless gang casually try to help themselves to the horrified man's money

Getaway: The Roma pickpockets look for their next victim after targeting the tourist using a cash point near Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris
Charity and human rights groups were furious last week when a leaked police memo called for the 'systematic eviction' of Roma from the centre of the city.

It followed the country's Prime Minister, Manuel Valls, saying that the travelling communities of mainly Romanians and Bulgarians 'cannot integrate' and should be deported.

A spokesman for Charity group Catholic Help described the note as a 'scandal', saying that it 'stigmatised a poor community' and amounted to 'racial profiling'- something which is illegal in secular France.

But other Paris officials argued that Roma are behind most of the crime in the city, involving themselves in everything from aggressive begging to muggings and burglaries.

Gangs of young Roma, including women and children, can regularly be seen harassing tourists.

Many of the Roma beggars who congregate around cash points and banks have very young children with them, including babies.

Most of them live in large shanty towns on the outskirts of Paris, but more and more are setting up new camps in central parks and squares.
Jean-Pierre Colombies, spokesman for the SNOP-SCSI police union, said Roma were constantly moving around Paris.

'It's musical chairs' said Mr Colombies. 'We chase the Roma from one place to another, from one arrondissement to the next.'
Even Stephane Le Foll, spokesman for France's Socialist Government, appeared to back the police, saying that extremely poor communities living rough in Paris made 'everybody extremely nervous'.
Mr Le Foll said: 'We're obliged to regulate all that, to be clear on all that, not to consider that nothing has happened.'

Prime Minister Valls has continued a policy started by former president Nicolas Sarkozy of razing Roma camps, and trying to deport as many of their occupants as possible.

This has led to protests from a number of human rights groups, including Amnesty International, which points out that most Roma in France are Romanian or Bulgarian and as such are EU citizens with the right to live and work in the country.

5  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Gombe spends N152m on mass wedding of 720 couples on: 22-04-2014 10:01 PM

The Gombe State Government says it spent N151.8 million on the mass wedding of 720 couples in the state.

The Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Dankwambo, made this known during the wedding ceremony of the couples in Gombe on Tuesday.

Dankwambo said the amount was expended on the settlement of dowry, purchase of food items, textile materials, furniture, kitchen utensils, as well as take-off capital for the couples.

The governor said that the materials had already been distributed to the beneficiaries by the committee set up to organise the wedding.

He revealed that some of the couples were People Living Positive

“Our aim is to ameliorate the negative implications of failed marriages and the attendant consequences on our society,” he said.

Ambassador Aliyu Dala-Hassan, Chairman of the Committee on Mass Wedding, said the committee consulted traditional rulers and local government chairmen before conducting the marriages.

He called on the government to sustain the programme because of the advantages inherent in the exercise.

“I want to appeal to Gov. Dankwambo to sustain the programme because it will greatly reduce social vices and assist the less privileged to get married,” he appealed.

Alhaji Shehu Abubakar, Emir of Gombe, said that the marriage was first of its kind in the state.

Abubakar said it would promote cultural values of people in the state.

Malam Ibrahim Suleiman, representative of the beneficiaries, commended the government for the gesture.

He said that sustaining the scheme would greatly reduce the spread of HIV/AIDs virus among the people of the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that out of the 720 couples that benefitted from the gesture, 612 are Muslim divorcees (Zawarawa), 76 Muslim spinsters and 32 non Muslims. [NAN]

10  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / How six policemen, killed, buried businessman & claimed he was a robber... on: 21-04-2014 09:27 AM

On January 6, 2012 in New Nyanya area of the state, six policemen – Inspector Danladi Lelika, Inspector Odua Eketo, Sergeant Vincent Manu, Corporal Christopher Maikasua, Corporal Musa Audu and Corporal Samson Mago, were on a patrol & allegedly shot dead Stephen Anakwe, a dog breeder in Jos.

As if that was not enough, acting on the report from the patrol team, few days later, the police paraded the corpse of the defenseless civilian, branding him a suspected criminal. Infuriated by the allegation, a younger brother to the deceased, Mr. Stanley Olisa, petitioned the then Inspector General of Police, Hafiz Ringim, and other authorities about the injustice and the criminality.
He told The Sun

"On January 14, 2012, a lady called me from Jos that my brother had a problem with the police in New Nyanya, Nasarawa State. On January 16, I went to the place and I made inquiry from residents of the area and they told me that my brother was beaten up with his right eye plucked out. They said he was picked up alive from the scene by six policemen on January 13, 2012, handcuffed and taken to the station in a police van while another policeman drove Stephen’s red Toyota car along.

“My lawyer and I rushed down to the New Nyanya Police Station, Nasarawa. We saw his car and met the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO), who told us that my brother was a suspected armed robber. The DCO explained that as his men were approaching my brother, he pulled out a pistol from his car, pointing it at a corporal, a situation that forced a sergeant among them to shoot my brother dead. I saw the story as a fabrication. My lawyer asked of the corpse but was told that it was buried the same day that it was paraded.
The lawyer queried the action, asking why the corpse was not deposited in a mortuary and why the police did not bother to reach the family through his mobile phone, his vehicle particulars and Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card. The DCO denied ever seeing any of those documents, a story that was repeated by the station’s Divisional Police Officer (DPO).e left and immediately petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Minister of Police Affairs, Chairman of Police Service Commission, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Director General of State Security Service (SSS), among others. “The former IGP, Hafiz Ringim, responded two days later to the petition. We were later called over to the Police Command Headquarters, Lafia, Nasarawa State. The investigation was about to start when a message came that the case has been transferred to Zone 4, Makurdi, Benue State.
The policemen asked me to hire a vehicle that would convey other police officers from Lafia to Makurdi that very day. With inconvenience, I went to source money to hire the vehicle to convey the police officers, my lawyer, the witness and myself to Makurdi. We arrived Makurdi at 11:30pm that day. Investigation began the next day by officers in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
got men from Benue State, who charged us N150, 000 to exhume the corpse. Also, we bought shovels and chemicals for the exhumation.  At a point, my friend and I had to join in the exhumation process because two of the five boys could no longer endure the odour and had to leave. When we brought out the corpse, the head had gone off because of the injury my brother sustained in the hands of police officials. I could only identify him by his feet.

“It was the clothes that he was wearing that kept the body in form. We got an ambulance, which charged N50, 000 from the cemetery to Keffi General Hospital Mortuary, where we were told that the corpse had decomposed beyond what the mortuary could handle. The ambulance driver referred and drove us to his friend – a mortician- at Uke General Hospital, Uke, along Abuja Road. The mortician asked us to deposit N50, 000 to keep the corpse. He later charged us N180, 000 to preserve the corpse. Because there was not enough money with us, we made part payment to the mortician and the ambulance driver halfway. The CID officers came back to Abuja under my bill. I was the one that paid their hotel and food bills for the four days that they stayed.
The autopsy was done by a pathologist from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Health Service Asokoro District Hospital, Abuja, at the cost of N450, 000. The autopsy report showed that my brother was shot from the back and that he was handcuffed.

“We later went to Makurdi where we applied for permission for police to release the corpse for burial. A corona was signed by the Court of Appeal before we were granted the authority to bury the corpse. On February 11, 2012, I left with the corpse to my state at the cost of N50, 000 and it was buried on February 14, 2012. The police wanted me to fund the ballistic analysis, which I refused at the time.”

He stated that the autopsy confirmed that his late brother was shot from the back, adding that there was no trace of bullet shattering his car. He described the allegation of Stephen being shot while in the car as empty.
hey have investigated the matter and for now, the policemen have been dismissed. They showed me the dismissal letter, but what they are delaying now is to go to court.
“So far, I would say that the police have done well. But dismissing them is not enough. They must pay for the crime they committed, according to the law. As you know, it is only the court that can give verdict of any punishment that befits them.
Certainly, my late brother can’t come back to life but it will serve as a lesson to others and possibly prevent them from being overzealous with the rifle. Believe me, many might have been killed in the past without bringing the culprit to book. We cannot continue in that light. My mission is to prevent other innocent Nigerians from losing their lives in the hands of an institution that is supposed to be protecting them."
Confirming the dismissal, former Provost, Zone 4 Makurdi, Umar Mohamed
"am fully are aware of the case. By the grace of God, the dismissal is part of the ongoing transformation agenda of the police force. It is true that those six policemen have been dismissed, as you may be aware. We are now waiting for the case to be taken to court. As we speak, they are right in the cell in Makurdi.

Stephen’s best friend, Mr. Moses Oguche said:
“Stephen was a bosom friend, although l may not want to go into the details of our friendship because it will always make me cry like a baby. It feels so painful that Stephen was killed in such manner. He had been a good and genuine friend. He was the first child of his parents just as l am the first child as well.
“I know him to be somebody that will always stand for truth and justice. He even took people’s problem on his shoulder. I almost collapse when they called me that Steve was dead. The police cannot deny it that my friend was killed unjustly because many people witnessed the incident. “Because of the incident, l had to postpone my traditional marriage because Stephen was supposed to be my best man. Before his death, he was fully into the business of selling Alsatian dogs and God helped him in the business that he cannot think of stealing. In fact, l can vouch for him that he cannot go into robbery.
“More than ten people said the killing happened in their presence. The story that the police earlier gave us completely conflicted with that of the eyewitnesses. The mum usually calls me and l do sense the burden and pain in her voice. I believe the case is not one that should be swept under the carpet. Though the parents are poor and helpless but with this development, the hope of getting full justice is brightened.”

11  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Doctors are now using Google glass to save patients life in US hospital - on: 21-04-2014 06:30 AM

Google Glass could become an integral part of medical care in the future and has already been credited with saving the life of one patient in the United States.
Wearing a beefed-up version of the futuristic internet-connected visual aid, doctors in Boston were able to immediately access the records of a man with a severe brain bleed last January during the devices clinical trials.

With the help of Google Glass, the physician at Beth Israel Deaconess was able to discover that because of his serious condition the patient had given an incomplete history and if they had administered much-needed drugs solely on that, he may have died.
The patient managed to tell doctors he was allergic to some blood pressure drugs – which they needed to slow the bleeding.

However, the man didn’t remember to tell them he was also taking blood-thining drugs – which when applied in combination could have been fatal.

Using the Google Glass to pull up his correct medical information, doctors were able to give him the correct dose of medication and thereby save him faster than accessing paper records or those of a computer screen somewhere else.

The life-saving story was first reported in the Boston Globe and is part of the Wearable Intelligence in Healthcare program in partnership with Google.

The glass devices contain specialized software designed for use solely inside hospitals and medical care centers.

The Google Glass has no access to social media or search engines and is only interconnected to the hospital Wi-Fi and physicians inside those four walls.

At Beth Israel Daconess, all ER doctors will now don the space-age glasses when they begin work – which will hopefully one day become as routine as putting on their scrubs.

Google Glass, which went on limited commercial sale last week in the United states, is considered the next possible frontier in mobile technology.

The frame contains a small eyeglass which has a small screen over the right eye which displays everything seen on a larger computer screen or smartphone.

In addition to the screen, Google Glass has a high-resolution camera which can be used to video patients as they arrive for records or to display real-time footage to specialists or doctors who are not currently present.

The device reacts to voice commands and the tech-giant hopes to retail Google Glass worldwide for up to $1,500.

‘And not only is it hands free, it’s always on, always in front of you and always giving you information,’ Dr. Steven Horng who is pioneering Google Glass in hospitals.

‘Rather than having to excuse myself, it means I can quickly access that information without having to interrupt the patient, lose eye contact, or even leave the room,’ said Horng to the Boston Globe.

Most importantly, despite being Google Glass, the Wearable Intelligence hardware have no access to Google’s database or records.

‘When we started this pilot, one of our caveats was we had to respect patient privacy and confidentiality,’ Horng told CNBC’s Squawk On the Street on Monday.

‘It needed to meet all the requirements that our other clinical applications do.’

Beth Israel and Wearable Intelligence plan to expand the hospital’s use of Google Glass in the near future. Additional uses could include using Glass for doctors to consult with each other remotely.

‘Surprisingly, the patients have been very very open to it,’ said Horng.

‘If anything, they have been very intrigued and like ‘what’s on your head?’

12  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Helen Ukpabio deported from the UK on: 21-04-2014 05:59 AM

'Apostle' Helen Ukpabio, the founder of Liberty Foundation Gospel Ministries based in Calabar, has been deported from the UK by the British government after deeming her presence in the country a risk to youngsters. (Modupe Ariyo is the Executive Director of Africa Unite Against Child Abuse)

The 'witch hunter' who wrote in her book ‘Unveiling The Mysteries of Witchcraft’, that "If a child under the age of two screams in the night, cries and is always feverish with deteriorating health he or she is a servant of Satan", was deported last week after campaigners called on UK Home Secretary to deport and ban her from the UK for leading the spread of witch hunting in Nigeria, especially amongst children, some of whom have suffered torture and even killed. (Read that here)

Helen, who was in the UK on tour to promote her belief in witchcraft and offer help to those ‘under threat’ from the wizardry, was not only deported, there are also reports that she has been banned from entering the UK until further notice.

13  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Parents kept daughter in cage for 3 years because she suffered from convulsion on: 21-04-2014 05:37 AM

Channels TV tells a story of how parents in Bayelsa state kept their 16 year old daughter in a cage for three years because she suffered from convulsion. Read full story below...
A regular visitor to the home of Mr Selekeowei Olokumo, in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Nigeria’s South-South region, would probably have noticed a small make shift building directly opposite his one bedroom apartment which could easily be mistaken for a generator cage.
To think it is a place where he stores his old and worn out property would not be out of place, as it was haphazardly built with wood and carton on what could be seen as a semi refuse dump site.
It was a feeling of shock when Channels Television realised that it was not for keeping his generator or other items but where his 16-year old daughter, Blessing Olokumo, had called home for almost three years.
Blessing is the 6th out of the 16 children of Mr and Mrs Olokumo; a twin who has no relationship with her twin sister, not because her twin sister was dead. she is simply ashamed of being associated with her.

She is not leprous, neither is she affected by any contagious disease. She is just a child who had convulsion when she was three years old and was not properly monitored by the medical doctors, so instead of outgrowing it as most children of her age would probably have done, she has since been battling with the condition.

One would expect her parents to be sympathetic to her plight and treat her with more care and attention, but the reverse has been the case, as Blessing is being treated with utmost disdain by those who are supposed to love her more.

She has been tagged the evil child, accused of being responsible for the death of her immediate siblings who were also twin girls. She has been abandoned by her parents in a cage for almost three years and left to God to decide her fate.

Luck smiled on Blessing when members of the Mary Slessor Twin Foundation, a foundation focused on the welfare of people of multiple birth heard of her plight and decided to intervene. She was rescued on January 25, 2014 in a very bad condition and has since been on admission at the Niger Delta Teaching Hospital, Okolobiri.

Blessing’s father, a security guard at the Niger Delta Teaching Hospital, Okolobiri was asked how he could do such to his flesh and blood. He simply stated without remorse that he was tired of looking after the girl.

“Why I kept her in this house is that when she defecates and urinates, she soils the whole house when the mother and myself are not around. So there’s nothing I can do again. I now isolated her from the apartment I’m living”, he said.

While one may be tempted to call her dad wicked, heartless and much more, one wonders what words would be adequate to describe her mother, Mrs Bernice Olokumo, a petty trader, who accused her daughter of being responsible for the death of her younger siblings who were also twin girls.

On her relationship with her daughter, she simply said she was afraid of her and appeals to the Government and other people of goodwill to come take Blessing from them, as they were tired of fending for their own child.

To ascertain the present condition of Blessing, Channels Television paid her a visit at the hospital and met a transformed girl. Gone were the tiny frame, bony knee and sunken eyes. A cheerful, robust and well fed child was what she had become, after just three months of love and care.

On the way forward regarding her medical bills and her future, efforts to speak with the doctors proved futile, but the President of the Mary Slessor Twin Foundation, Mr Ebitei Roberts, spoke.
“What we are working on is that after now when she is discharged, we want to take her to maybe a motherless babies’ home or any special school to rehabilitate her. With the way we are seeing things, if we take her back to the family, they will take her back to where she was and we don’t want that to repeat itself because we have spent money.”

The foundation has since lodged a formal complaint with the Police and the welfare department of the State Ministry of Women Affairs. The complaints list criminal charges of child abduction, inhuman treatment, child molestation and failure to enrol a child for proper education.

15  Forum / Politics / Jonathan to Nyako: You’re the real sponsor of insurgents on: 21-04-2014 01:21 AM

The altercation between the Presidency and the Adamawa State governor, Admiral Murtala Nyako (rtd) worsened yesterday as the former described the governor as a sponsor of insurgents, alleging that Nyako recently ‘imported’ some Fulani fighters into the country.

At the weekend, Nyako wrote his fellow northern governors, asking them to join him in instituting a legal action against President Goodluck Jonathan whom he accused of embarking on ethnic cleansing by ensuring that the ongoing insurgent acts persist in the North.

He also accused the President of deliberately refusing to grant amnesty to the Boko Haram members in furtherance of what he described as his approach of German dictator, Adolf Hitler to wipe out the northern people.

But reacting yesterday, President Jonathan said it was unfortunate that such statements could come from a governor, saying it is an indication that Nyako is not fit to be a governor.

Speaking for his principal through a statement, the Special Adviser to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, said Nyako should actually be linked with promotion of insurgent acts in the North.

Reacting, Okupe wrote: “It is perhaps necessary to request the Adamawa Governor to publish his yearly budget for the past five years and disclose how much has been voted or spent to support the war on terror or assist victims of insurgents activities in his state.

“The public will recall that only recently, the governor was publicly attacked by a group of angry youths who accused him of non-challance and failure to support victims of Boko Haram’s murderous onslaught on innocent citizens of the state.

“We also wish to remind Nigerians that this same Governor Nyako was recently quoted as having boasted openly that now that the Fulani herdsman can assemble the AK47 gun, ‘the security equilibrium in the country is now balanced.’ The same man was reported to have imported some Fulanis from outside the country and spent millions of Naira in rehabilitating, feeding, housing and catering for their welfare.”

The Presidency also took exception to Nyako’s remarks that Jonathan is from the Eastern Region which was responsible for killing northern the political elite on the 15th of January 1966, describing such as capable of embarrassing the military which is the governor’s constituency.

“Similarly, the Adamawa state governor referred to the Boko Haram terrorist group as a “phantom organization” which he believes does not exist! How hypocritical!?

“In his unwise and desperate attempt to demonise the Federal Government, Governor Nyako likened the military operations against insurgents to the activities of German dictator, Adolf Hitler! In his befuddled mind and apparent hallucination, the Federal Government should be held responsible for the activities of insurgents in the North- East and the sad killings, wanton destruction, murder and kidnapping of school children as well as other horrendous activities of Boko Haram should be hung on the neck of the Federal Government! He therefore invited his colleague northern governors to join him to sue the Federal Government. This definitely defies common sense and portrays Mr. Nyako as unfit for the hallowed position of a state governor,” Okupe averred.

In urging Nigerians to ignore the governor, the Presidency noted: “It is obvious that Governor Nyako’s opposition to the declaration of a State of Emergency in three affected states of the North-East as well as his repeated calls for the withdrawal of the military from troubled states without any credible alternative or security roadmap, is an open endorsement of the activities of the insurgents which is meant to provide them unrestricted opportunity to further unleash terror on innocent citizens, in order to precipitate chaos, further instability, mayhem and anarchy.”

16  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / 20 Ghanaian Juju Priest Tackles Prophet T.B Joshua on: 21-04-2014 12:45 AM

A very powerful juju priest in Ghana, Priest Nana Kwaku Bonsam, is not taking it easy with Nigerian man of God, Prophet T.B. Joshua, and has plans to run the popular seer out of his country as well as report him to Pope Francis of the Roman Catholic Church.

From what we gather, Priest Nana Kwaku Bonsam is not happy that Prophet Joshua has become one of the most powerful men that controls activities in Ghana and that even the Ghanaian president has so much faith in the Nigerian prophet.

The juju man says he will personally go to Rome to report to the Pope to call Joshua to order or else he and other members of the juju clan in his country will make things very difficult for Joshua.

Priest Bonsam is of the view that Prophet Joshua is “acting like Christ” and that his prophecies are misleading, as he is not a true man of God and uses “tricks”, having his editors fabricating things and posting it to the Internet and demonstrating on his TV station. Bonsam even indicated that it was Prophet T. B. Joshua that killed the former President of Ghana, Professor John Evans Atta Mills.
What do you make of this spiritual battle?

17  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Has Sinzu/Sauce Kid been arrested? Says it wasn't him in the video on: 21-04-2014 12:27 AM

I'm sure some of you have heard the news and seen the video. I didn't carry it before now because I wasn't 100% sure it was really him in the video, even though many are convinced it's him, especially his sworn enemy rapper Godwon, who was one of the first people to share the surveillance video on social media.

For those who don't know what I am talking about, a recent surveillance video was released online showing someone who looked like rapper Sauce Kid/Sinzu perpetrating debit card fraud in Houston. Screen shots above.

The video was posted on a local US website abclocal.go.com and they said authorities were looking for a man wanted for withdrawing money from a victim’s bank account at an ATM in Walgreen’s store on 8535 South Braeswood, Southwest Houston on March 2, 2014.

Sinzu, who has since deleted his instagram page, said he is not the one in the surveillance video. But, (which is also the reason I'm carrying this report now) his real name was published on this website as someone who has either been arrested or being searched for 'fraudulent use of identification, filed by Plano police.' Continue..

Babalola Falemi is the real name of rapper Sinzu.

Godwon is convinced he's the one in the video...

Here's a pic of Sinzu during a video shoot in Houston

In a whatsapp chat with blogger, Tosin Adeda, Sinzu said he's not the one in the video...

Authorities are looking for a man wanted for withdrawing money from a victim's bank account at an ATM in southwest Houston.

Houston police released surveillance video of the suspect inside a Walgreen's store on 8535 South Braeswood on March 2.

The female victim, 38, from the Dallas/Fort Worth area, told police she noticed unauthorized transactions being made with her debit card. She quickly filed a report with Houston Police Department.

Authorities retrieved video evidence of the suspect during the transactions at the store. The suspect is seen at an ATM, swiping what appeared to be a card with the woman's account information on it.
