62  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Otedola Acquires 2.5 Percent Additional Stake in First Bank To Become Largest Shareholder on: 10-12-2021 03:07 PM

Nigeria’s billionaire magnate and chair of Geregu Power Plc Femi Otedola has acquired a further interest in FBN Holdings Plc, the parent company of Nigeria’s oldest lender First Bank, an affirmation that the heated battle for the soul of the financial services group among its principal shareholders is not yet over.

Multiple sources with knowledge of the matter told us that Mr. Otedola acquired at least 2.5 percent additional interest in the company, bringing his total stake to 7.53 percent. Mr. Otedola previously made piecemeal acquisitions summing up to 5.03 percent.

Disclosure of the latest development to the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) is expected on Friday,

The purchase will formally consolidate his position as the single biggest shareholder of FBN Holdings, placing him well ahead of his closest rival Tunde Hassan-Odukale, FirstBank’s chairman, whom he has come in contention with since the news of his share acquisitions broke into the open late October.

Mr Otedola’s earlier move spurred Mr. Hassan-Odukale to swiftly lay claim to 5.36 percent shareholding in the Holdco in what he called “cumulative equity stake” drawn from a combination of his direct, indirect, and related party shareholding in the group.

Days after, the board of FBN Holdings issued a letter seen by PREMIUM TIMES to the Corporate Affairs Commission, notifying Hassan-Odukale’s “5.36 percent” cumulative stake and other related details. A spokesperson of the commission told PREMIUM TIMES that the letter was not delivered to it.

But the controversial aspect of his declaration, particularly his claim to 1.05 percent stake held by Leadway Pensure PFA, a company owned by Mr. Hassan-Odukale, attracted disapproval from the NGX and the National Pension Commission.

The wrangle around the claim lies in how an equity investment from a pool of employees’ pension contributions could qualify as a single individual’s investment.

Former Super Falcons of Nigeria goalkeeper Rachael Ayegba is now a bus driver in London, England,

Ayegba was a member of the Falcons team at the 2007 Women’s World Cup. She was also part of the squad to the 2006 and 2008 Women’s Africa Cup of Nationals and had an 11-year stint as a pro in Finland, winning the league title in 2013 with PK-35 Vantaa.
The former shot-stopper, who is in the middle of a year’s training, now drives the number 185 between Lewisham and Victoria.

The 35-year-old who moved to England in 2018, says she had visited London for years on holiday and always admired the double-decker buses. She reckons driving a bus and to play in goal have a lot in common, which is about safety first and about not making a mistake.

“When you are trying to save the ball, you need safe hands. But there are ten others on your side,” she was quoted on Evening Standard. “When you drive a bus, you are on your own. Mentally you have to be 100% ready, if you are a goalkeeper the defenders can help you. You can’t make any mistakes driving a bus,” she added.

The letter was signed by Musa Nuhu, NCAA director-general,

“I wish to inform you of the withdrawal of the approval granted to Emirates Airlines Winter Schedule. This approval was conveyed via a letter with reference number FMA/ATMD/501/C.104/XV/536 dated December 1, 2021,”
the statement reads.

“This withdrawal becomes effective on Sunday, December 12, 2021, at 2300h. Please kindly note, henceforth, Emirates Airlines is granted approval to operate only one weekly passenger frequency to Abuja on Thursdays.

“Please be guided accordingly. Do accept the assurances of my highest regards.”

Emirates is the largest airline and one of two flag carriers of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the other is Etihad Airways.

Last Sunday, Emirates resumed flight operations to Nigeria after almost ten months of diplomatic discussions around Covid-19 travel requirements for Nigerian passengers.

In February, the airline had instructed Nigerian travelers at the Lagos and Abuja airports to take another PCR test on arrival in Dubai, the directive led to a ban on Emirates flights in Nigeria.

The decision was later reversed when the airline agreed to stop the rapid antigen tests.

In a twist in March, the federal government reintroduced the ban, explaining that Emirates had continued to conduct tests for passengers before departure and at arrival in Dubai.
