21785  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / We Almost Died Inside The Ship, Stowaways to Spain Recount Ordeal on: 4-06-2014 10:36 AM

TWELVE stowaways — 11 Nigerians and a Ghanaian  — rescued by  personnel of the Nigerian Navy ship, NNS Beecroft, Apapa, Lagos, from a Spain-bound vessel, MV African Osprey, weekend, narrated how they almost suffocated inside the cabin they hid.
The stowaways, discovered to be casual workers on the ship, told us that had the crew members delayed in opening the cabin where they hid, they would have died without reaching their dream destination.
The suspects identified as  Boniface Douglas, a Ghanaian and 11 Nigerians: Mustapha Ayinla, Bernard Amadi, Azinabor Gideon, Isaac Delight, Daniel Timothy, Justice Agburum, Anthony Oladipupo, Emma Okon, Idowu Adeyemi, Philip Israel and Holly Osatwie, blamed their action on unemployment  in the country.
Douglas, the Ghanaian, said the latest arrest was his sixth futile attempt to leave the country illegally.
I made 6 earlier attempts
Hear him: ” I work as a labourer in the ship. We all planned it without the knowledge of the crew members.  We sneaked into the ship on a Sunday because we were aware that the ship would be sailing next day to Spain.
“We decided to hide in one of the unused cabins. We entered from Apapa. I went with chin-chin, three bags of pure water and garri, cassava flakes which I sneaked into the ship without the knowledge of the cabin crew
.
I have similar attempt six times. The first was to Brazil but I was deported on reaching there. The second was Senegal, in 2002, others are Santos, Conakry, Abidjan and Togo. I was deported because I was without the necessary documents.
Daniel Timothy, 23, on his part said : “We almost suffocated. If the crew members had delayed in opening the cabin we hid in, we would have been dead by now.
“While inside, we were praying to get to the country safe and also planned how to sneak out of the ship at night. But three days into the journey, we started perceiving a foul odour. We endured for some time.
At a point, we could not breathe any longer. I suggested we started banging the door to attract the crew members in order to go back to our country alive rather than dying without reaching our destination.
“Others suggested we should hold on. When I couldn’t bear it, I started banging on the cabin door because we could not open it from inside. Others joined me and in the process, the crew members came and opened the cabin.
That was my third attempt and I promise never to leave the country through such means again
.”
I excreted inside polythene bags
For 24-year-old Agburum, who claimed that was his first attempt , he said: “I was tempted to embark on the journey because some of  my friends succeeded through same means.
“On the night we sneaked in, I had a running stomach. I took several polythene bags because I was told that we would not come out once we have entered. I excreted all though the night inside polythene bags, as the nauseating feeling aggravated my condition. I almost died. I only managed to eat eight wraps of sausage rolls out of the 15 I went with. I do not intend to attempt it again because it was not a pleasant experience.”
Handing them over to personnel of the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Ilesanmi Alade, said the arrest and subsequent rescue were  done in conjunction with personnel of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA.
He however, appealed to ship owners and all seafarers to ensure thorough security checks were conducted onboard prior to departure from harbours.”
21786  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Brazil 2014: Over 1 Million Brazilian Prostitutes Prepare For World Cup Fans on: 4-06-2014 09:44 AM

According to the locals, it’s the bar capital of the world, with more than 12,000 catering for the five million citizens of Brazil’s third city. Others will recall Belo Horizonte as the scene of England’s most humiliating football defeat, when a hearse driver and teacher from the US stunned the national team at the 1950 World Cup. But if the 5,000 or so English ticket holders expected here for England’s final group game against Costa Rica in a few weeks’ time look a little more closely, they may remember it for something else. As is the case across Brazil, peer behind the mask and another reality stares back at you.

In downtown Belo Horizonte are 23 brothels, known locally as zonas. They are hidden up narrow staircases between shops in the grim city center, a place so grey, in parts, that you could be in the old Soviet Union except for the scorching sun above. Nearby, in an empty office on the top floor of a shopping centre, a handful of the 2,000 or so prostitutes who work the city are getting English classes from a volunteer in order to cash in on the six matches the city’s Mineirão stadium will host (including one semi-final). All the while, tucked away at the back of an indoor car-park, is Aprosmig – a union for those within the industry in the state of Minas Gerais (the name is a contraction of the “Minas Gerais association of prostitutes”). “For sure [the city's prostitutes] will get more money with the World Cup,” says the fifty something woman working the desk. “In the nightclubs they’ll be earning a lot. It’s normal for foreign guys to look for them, they always do, and now there’ll be more foreign guys. They’ll do very well.”

Inside, pasted to a grubby wall are erotic photographs and charts of the body, notes about diseases, numbers for doctors and timetables for psychology sessions. As the woman potters about, she tells her story, a familiar narrative. Having become pregnant and seen the factory she worked in shut down, she took a job as a cleaner. But the family she worked for put pressure on, insisting they should adopt her child, and she felt she couldn't keep both job and baby, but neither could she go hungry. There was one avenue to walk down. “I prostituted when my child was sleeping,” she sighs. “But it was weird, lying there in a room as guys looked in your door before deciding. I just remembered I had to bring food to my house and I had to pay bills so there was no choice. But I spent my life working in that room. I missed out on so much.
21787  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Mountain of Fire Ministries Church Bans Women From Wearing Trousers on: 4-06-2014 09:28 AM

According to a new reports, the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries has barred residents of host communities from passing through its Prayer City located at Magboro on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State. Also, women in trousers, who have other business in the Prayer City, have been barred from passing through the camp ground.

The MFM had on Saturday, May 10, blocked the access road to Magboro, Magada, Makogi, Abule Odo and Unity Estate among other communities, a move the residents claimed was not only surprising, but was done without consultation with them. They planned a protest, but luckily, the Ibafo Police Division intervened, promising that the issues involved would be resolved.

Three weeks after the DPO’s intervention, the church barred the residents from passing through its estate, which is the only access road to link the expressway. And started a “strict enforcement” of its law against women putting on trousers and passing through the camp ground.

Some women, who were on their way to the Ecobank in the Prayer City on Monday recounted their experiences in the hands of the security men at the main gate of the camp. They wondered why the church must “embarrass” women, who were on their way to a “bank and not the church auditorium.”

One of them, who spoke to us on condition of anonymity on Monday, said:
See the loose trousers that I’m putting on. How does this offend anybody? You can imagine the embarrassment that I was subjected to at the gate on my way here (bank). They asked why I must wear trousers to this place, as if I said I was going to the church auditorium. At least, they should have waited till I want to enter the church.”

When contacted, the Security Head of the church, who gave his name only as Mr. Lanre, told us:
The so-called access road is illegal. It is part of the church property. If we decided to block it, I don’t think that is business of anybody. Can you claim what does not belong to you? They (communities) even went ahead to stage an informal protest. Attacks on public places in the country have made it mandatory for organisations to beef up their security. We are not under compulsion to share our property with the communities.

Commenting on the women on trousers, Lanre said the dress was inconsistent with the doctrine of the church. He continued:
“Such women will be barred from taking the road on the camp that links to the expressway.
21788  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Chinese Woman Defrauds Nigerians N50.5 million, Ibadan Court Grants Bail on: 4-06-2014 09:17 AM

Justice Ayo Emmanuel of the Federal High Court in Ibadan on Tuesday granted bail to Jhoun Jun, a Chinese precious stone dealer, who allegedly defrauded some Nigerians of N50.5 million.
In his ruling, the judge held that bail was the constitutional right of everybody as long as the offence was bailable.
As far as I am concerned, if the accused wanted to run away since 2011, she would have done so.
“I grant her bail in the sum of N2 million and two reliable sureties in like sum.
“One of the two sureties must possess an international account and the international passport of the accused must also be deposited with the court,” he said.

The prosecutor, DSP Funke Fawole, had earlier filed an application praying the court not to grant the accused bail.
The prosecutor had argued that the accused may jump bail and flee to China.
The accused was arraigned on 20 May on a 17-count charge which included conspiracy, obtaining money under false pretence and stealing of precious stones.
Fawole said that the accused committed the crime in 2011 in Ibadan.
The prosecutor alleged that the accused had bought N50.5 million worth of precious stones from some Nigerian dealers and refused to pay.
She listed the complainants as Awokson Shem, Abdulahi Mayanchi, Abdulrahaman Mohammed, Ado Black, Ibrahim Dangbombe, Abba Inuwa and John Mamshep.
Fawole told the court that the offences were contrary and punishable under sections 8 (a) 1 (1) (a), 383 and 1 (1) (b)Act Cap. A 6 Vol. 1 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
Emmanuel adjourned the case till 3 July for definite trial.
21789  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / 324 Lagos Bus Drivers Fail Hard Drugs, Alcohol, Eye Tests on: 3-06-2014 03:30 PM

Out of the 500 commuter bus drivers screened by the Lagos State Government at two motor parks in the state, 324 of the drivers tested positive to hard drugs, high alcoholic intake and bad eyesight.
The drivers were tested recently at the T&M CMS and CMS-Epe Motor Parks at Marina, Lagos, southwest Nigeria.
They were screened for high blood pressure, diabetes, eye disease, blood alcohol content (BAC) and narcotics during a five-day screening, awareness and sensitization campaign organized by the Lagos State Ministry of Health.
According to the Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, 176 people were screened for hypertension and diabetes, 351 drivers had their eyes screened, 120 people underwent urine test, 80 drivers were screened for alcohol content level using breathalyzer and 83 people underwent one-on-one mental health counselling.
He explained that out of the 500 motor drivers that were screened during the latest exercise,  50 of those screened suffered from hypertension, 16 people were found to be diabetic, 100 drivers tested positive to hard drugs while 26 others had excessive blood alcohol level.
Of the 351 drivers screened for blindness, 198 of them had eye defect and had been driving with poor eyesight, thus endagering the lives of passengers.
Out of this figure, Idris said 117 were given free eye glasses, 42 people were penciled down for special order lenses while 39 were referred for specialized eye care.
He said the screening, under the Motor Park Health and Safety Initiatives programme was instituted in order to ensure the safety of drivers and commuters by creating awareness about the need for drivers to update their driving skills and techniques, submitting themselves for periodic medical examination, especially eye tests on one hand and other non-communicable diseases like hypertension and diabetes on the other hand and dissuading them from substance abuse like alcohol and drugs.
The commissioner added that the state government decided to embark on the Motor Park Health and Safety Initiatives programme because human developmental index had shown that the numbers of lives that were lost in a year were not necessarily lost to natural illnesses alone but to violence, road accidents, and other needless and avoidable cause of death.
“This explains why the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Ministry of Transportation and in partnership with Guinness Nigeria Plc put together this initiative. Again, that is why the importance of this motor park health and safety awareness campaign cannot be over emphasized,” Idris opined.
He explained that the Motor Park Health and Safety Initiative sensitization and screening campaign had been taken to Ojota, Iyana Ipaja, Oyingbo and Bariga motor parks, stressing that advocacy, education and enlightenment on what commercial motor drivers should do and should not do as regards their health and well being, especially to ensure an accident free commuting is what the programme seeks to achieve.
“The screening, counselling and advocacy team that run this programme include medical doctors, psychiatrists, nurses, laboratory technicians, pharmacists and pharmaceutical technicians, officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Vehicle Inspection Officers, Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) officials and administrative workers,” the Commissioner said.
He urged commercial motor drivers to desist from taking alcohol, drugs or other related substance before going behind the wheel, stressing that evidence abound that road traffic accidents are influenced and precipitated by substance abuse which impairs driver’s ability to manage and manipulate a vehicle well.
“Let us resolve today that we will stop taking a gamble with our lives. Every time you cross the highway, every time you drink paraga (illicit gin), every time you get behind the steering wheels with drugs in your system, it is like putting a loaded gun to one’s head and wondering if it can kill or not. It is a huge risk to take and we should stop taking that risk,” he appealed.

Two 12-year-old girls stabbed their friend to impress someone they met on the Internet.

They lured their friend, who is also their age mate,  into a wooded area in Milwaukee last weekend, and stabbed her 19 times.

She was severely wounded but luckily, her life was saved because she was found by a bicyclist who was riding around the area. She is now receiving treatment at a hospital and is in stable condition.

The girls intended to kill their friend to impress a certain “Slenderman,” whom they met on a website called “Creepypasta Wiki,” which posts horror stories.

Slenderman is the site’s leader, and to be a part of his world, a user must first kill someone.

The fictional Slenderman character is reportedly an internet meme that often appears in horror stories, images, and videos.

Although both girls are minors, they will face trial as adults. They have been charged with attempted homicide.
21793  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Army Court-Martials 10 Generals, Reason: Secret Deal with Boko Haram on: 3-06-2014 10:46 AM
The battle against the dreaded Boko Haram sect have taken a dangerous turn as no fewer than 15 senior military officers, including 10 generals, have been tried before a court-martial and found guilty of giving information and ammunition to members of the Boko Haram terrorist group.

A military source said: “There are a lot of arrests that have been made over some officers who were sabotaging the ongoing counter-insurgency operations. The suspects include about 10 generals and other ranks, not to talk of soldiers who have been found culpable of sabotaging our operations. They are facing trial before court-martials set up by their divisions; some have been found guilty, and some are still facing trial. Once the court martial rule, the recommendations are forwarded to the Army Headquarters or Defence Headquarters as the case may be.

Another top security source revealed that four senior officers were found guilty as charged: “Four generals have been court-martialed for divulging high-class security information to the members of the sect. They were found guilty of leaking military strategies to the Boko Haram people. This was why many soldiers have been ambushed and killed by the Boko Haram.”

According to Leadership, the Army and Defence headquarters have raised the alarm that some of their officers and men are leaking official information to the terrorists and that some of them have been arrested and arraigned before some court-martials in some army divisions in the north.

Leadership source who could not disclose the names of the generals simply said some senior military officers and soldiers from a particular section of the country are deeply involved in the treasonable acts.

They have been found guilty of also collaborating with some top politicians in the country to make the country ungovernable for selfish reasons. A lot of re-organisation is going on in the military. Many generals will go. Some will be court-martialed and some will be forcefully retired.
“Movement of our troops in the north-east have been leaked to the Boko Haram by many of our colleagues, but the Defence headquarters has realized that and is seriously considering redeployment of some senior officers out of the north-east.”

Although efforts to confirm from the Defence Headquarters’ spokesman, Major General Chris Olukolade, did not yield any result, a top serving general in the DHQ said a lot of trials were indeed going on.
In his words: “A lot is happening. Those suspected are being tried, and this is why it is difficult to confirm or deny the story. But whenever the final verdicts are taken on these trials, the press would be briefed by the appropriate officers.”

21795  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / "I Made $398million in 90 days" Femi Otedola Billionaire businessman on: 3-06-2014 09:54 AM

Nigerian energy mogul Femi Otedola has become at least $398 million richer between March 3 and June 2 as shares of Forte Oil PLC, a Nigerian Stock Exchange-listed energy distributor, surged 167% in that period.
Forte Oil PLC is primarily engaged in the distribution of petroleum products such as diesel, aviation fuel and Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). The company has over 500 company-owned, dealer-assisted and dealer-developed gas stations spread across the country, oil storage depots in Lagos and Rivers states, a Power plant and a Joint User Hydrant Installation facility in Lagos. The company also sells its own range of automobile lubricants.
On March 3, the company’s stock was trading at N88.4 ($0.55), and at the close of trading today (Monday), its share price was N235.79 ($1.46). According to Akinbamidele Akintola, Vice President, Africa equity sales at Renaissance Capital, the recent unprecedented demand and surge in Forte Oil’s shares may not be unconnected to the company’s recent inclusion in the Morgan Stanley MS +0.13% Capital International (MSCI ) Frontier Market 100 Index. Listing in such indexes usually attracts interest from global investors who track these companies.

Otedola became the largest shareholder in Forte Oil (formerly called African Petroleum) in 2007 when he acquired a 28.7% stake in the company from the government-owned oil company, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) for $120 million. He subsequently appointed himself as chairman of the company. Otedola, 47, has gobbled up additional shares over the years and now owns more than 40% of the $1.5 billion (Market Capitalization) company. According to information available from registrar sources, he currently owns 436,809,537 shares valued at N103 billion ($635 million). He pocketed at least $11 million in dividends from profits made by his company in February as Forte Oil paid shareholders a dividend of N4 ($0.0023) per ordinary share from its 2013 profits.
21796  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Police Parade Kidnap Suspect, Telephone Thieves & Rapists in Imo on: 3-06-2014 09:30 AM

Okwudili Nnagbo, a kidnap suspect fleeing to South Africa, arrested after boarding his escape aircraft to South Africa at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, last month was yesterday paraded at the headquarters of the State Anti-robbery Squad, Awka, Anambra State, alongside 13 other suspects caught for various offences.

Nnagbo, from Nri in Anaocha Local Government Area of the state, said he had been in the business of kidnapping for many years, adding that he had lost count of the number of persons he had kidnapped in the past.

He said he decided to quit kidnapping when one of his relations in South Africa invited him over, noting that he thought he had covered his tracks only to be arrested at the point of departing the country.
Also paraded were Chukwudi Chinedu from Okija, and Kevin Obi from Umuzu who allegedly raped the pregnant wife of a man they robbed of N66,000 and Uba Christian Chukwuemeka from Oji River in Enugu State who had been involved in the kidnap of female students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka where he enrolled for a diploma programme few years ago.

Chinedu said he was living in Lagos and was looking for money to transport himself back to Lagos and blamed the devil for his action.

Another gang that includes Onyeka Ozoigbo, a vulcanizer, and Harrison Amaukwu, both from Uli in Ihiala Local Government Area were caught with 85 telephone handsets stolen from various people.

Luck, however, ran out on them when one of the people they approached to buy one of the phones at N1,700 alerted the Police and they were apprehended, while one member of the gang, who scaled the wall on sighting the police, is still at large.

Another suspect, Mr. Chiagorom Ihejiagwa, from Akokwa in Imo State admitted that though he had a shop in Asaba, he was  involved in buying stolen cars.

The one that landed him into trouble, he said, was the Honda Pilot SUV which he bought at N1.5 million, adding that he knew that it was stolen before he bought it.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Emeka Chukwuemeka also displayed various arms and ammunition recovered from the suspects.
21797  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / 95% of Rural Girls Miss Classes During Menstruation on: 2-06-2014 05:16 PM

According to the study, most of the girls could not manage themselves well because of lack of modern sanitary pads, sanitary facilities, water for personal hygiene and inadequate disposal options.

Mr. John Baidoo, Chief Executive Officer of SUDEF, who made this known, expressed regret that most girls in rural areas used old and tattered rags as sanitary pads.

He was speaking at a durbar organized by the NGO, which works to promote water, sanitation and hygiene at Susuanso, to commemorate the 2014 Menstrual Hygiene Day (MHD) over the weekend.

The MHD, which falls on May 28 every year, was instituted by the United Nations (UN) to raise awareness and help women and girls adopt and improve on personal hygiene during menstruation.

Mr. Baidoo observed that because school girls in deprived communities are not able to manage their menstrual periods in safety and privacy due to a number problems, they felt embarrassed to mix-up with their peers in school.

He explained that the environment in many schools in deprived areas are not conducive for girls in their adolescent stage as they could not have access to facilities to change their sanitary pads and underwears.

Mr. Baidoo emphasised that menstruation is a natural process, but if not properly managed, could lead to health complications and problems, indicating that poor menstrual hygiene could lead to psychological and productive problems in girls.

He stressed that, it is essential for the government and her development partners to increase girl’s access to water and sanitation facilities in schools to improve menstrual hygiene.

There is also a need for both girls and boys to have a greater awareness of menstrual hygiene, Mr. Baidoo added.
