21806  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Man Caught With A Gun Hidden Inside A Disk Says He Is An APC Member on: 2-06-2014 09:47 AM

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Lagos has arrested a suspected armed robber who concealed a locally made gun inside a disc player.
The suspect, Azeez Adebayo, a native of Ifo in Ogun State was arrested in the course of an undercover operation by the police.

According to the police, Adebayo is a member of an armed robbery gang, which normally comes to Lagos to rob and then return to the neighbouring states.

The source explained how the police were able to crack the case. “We had information that he is in possession of a locally made gun and that he is a member of a robbery gang, which usually comes from Ogun State to rob in Lagos and then return to their base.

We then sent an informant after him. When we were convinced that he had a gun and a gang, we asked him to come with his gang and join us for a robbery operation in Ikorodu. We got his phone number and then convinced him that we were a big time armed robbery gang in Lagos.

He even volunteered to help us get some people who have AK-47 in Sagamu.  Later, when he couldn’t get them on time, we asked him to bring the one he has and let us go for the operation. He came with the locally made gun to join us, without knowing that it was policemen he was discussing with all the while. That was how he was arrested,” the police source explained.

Adebayo reportedly travelled to Lagos with the gun inside the disc player without any problems. The suspect, the police gathered, had been to prison before. Yet, after his release, he conveniently went back to crime. “He had been to prison before for armed robbery and conspiracy. So, he is a habitual criminal. He has made a useful statement which can lead to the arrest of so many people.”

Meanwhile, speaking with us, Adebayo who said he worked as a ticketer for a motorcycle riders union in Ogun State claimed that the gun was part of his tools as a politician. “I am a politician; a member of APC (All Progressives Congress). We normally use the gun during election. One of my ogas in Ifo, a member of OPC (Odua People’s Congress) in Ifo gave it to me. I explained to him that as a politician, I needed something like that. And he said no problem. That was how he gave it to me. I bought it from him for N10, 000.”

On how he gets cartridges for the gun, Adebayo swore that he never used cartridges with the gun. “It is not meant to be used in shooting. We only use it to scare people. (Ma pa e, ekuro ni bi o). It is just for something like that. It is not like we want to kill anybody. That is usually during election. I don’t have even a single cartridge.” The suspect, who admitted that he has been to prison for conspiracy and armed robbery in 2012; however insisted that he did not go back to crime. “It is only God that knows my mind. I did not do anything. I am not using the gun for anything.”

The police source assured that the case would be charged to court as soon as investigations were concluded.

*A member of APC keh????Oya oh,APC a press release is needed to expplain why an armed robber is claiming to be a member of una party oh...this is serious.

I hope they catch all the others he mentioned before they went to press because if they read this, they would have long started the long run.
21807  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Ex Edo Gov. Igbinedion Broke, After Falling Victim To Venezuelan Con men on: 30-05-2014 04:35 PM
Although money laundering cases against him show that Lucky Igbinedion may have stolen several millions of dollar from the treasury of Edo State during the eight years he was governors, details from a court case he instituted against Venezuelan state owned oil company, Petroleos De Venezuela S.A (PDVSA) and alleged conman, Fransisco Gonzalez, suggest that the scam may have caused serious damage to his finances.

In 2007 the ex-governor lost over N3 billion to Venezuelan fraudsters in a botched fuel import deal. He has since instituted a $600 million suit against PDVSA and Mr. Gonzalez in a U.S. District Court in New York.

Court documents seen  revealed that two Manhattan-based law firms previously contracted by Igbinedion’s company, Skanga Energy and Marine limited, have withdrawn from the case over non-payment of their retainer.

One of them, a personal injury law firm, Robert Dunne LLC, quit because of the inability of Mr. Igbinedion’s Skanga to pay fee as low as $3,800.00 (N627,000).

Plaintiff has failed and refused to pay Dunne Firm fees reasonably earned for legal services rendered, although demand for such payment has been made several times,” an affidavit informing the court of its decision to withdraw for the case read.

The other law firm, Robinson Brog Leinwand Greene Genovese & Gluck P.C, also complained that efforts to establish direct communication with Skanga had been difficult as the company preferred to be reached through a Mississippi-based Nigerian owned “two lawyer” (husband and wife) law firm, Salu & Salu.

David Burger, a lawyer with the law firm of Robinson Brog, swore, amongst other reasons, in an affidavit that the ability of his law firm to represent Skanga is “being severely impeded” by “the continued inability of the my firm to have any adequate direct communication with Skanga, with delayed and inadequate communications only relayed through a two lawyer firm Located in Mississippi.”

According to David Burger, Skanga owes his law firm a total of $114,000 (N18,810,000) in unpaid fee.
Olufemi Salu, of Salu & Salu, also admitted to the court that the scam has rendered Mr. Igbinedion and his businesses insolvent. In fact, on 23 August 2013, it filed a motion asking the court to compel PDVSA to pay for the travel expenses and lodging of its estranged attorney, Mr Dunne, for the deposition of its own officials in Lagos.

The action of PDVSA, subject matter of this lawsuit, crippled the business of Plaintiff. Plaintiff currently struggles to pay its attorneys. Court should take judicial notice that Plaintiff’s previous attorneys withdrew their representation over dispute regarding attorneys’ fees. Consequently, Plaintiff is unable to afford deposition scheduled in Nigeria,” he argued.

Now Igbinedion is stuck with Mr. Salu, a lawyer based in Mississippi-Tennessee. Though he claimed to have represented major international corporations like “Texaco, Mobil Oil, Chase Manhattan Bank, ship owners, and foreign governments”, his areas of expertise are personal injury, car accidents and fatal car accidents.

Pitching Mr. Salu against lawyers from upscale law firm like Foley Hoag LLP looks like a rigged contest. Foley Hoag is based in Boston, Massachusetts, with offices in Washington DC and Paris. Ranked number six in the “20 Best Law Firms To Work For In The Nation”, by U.S. company rating organization, Vault, Foley Hoag was involved in Boston’s early civil rights struggle and won the 1970 lawsuit that brought desegregation to Boston public schools. In 2008, the firm successfully represented the government of Bolivia in the dispute over the nationalisation of telecom company, Entel.

This mismatch was apparent as Mr. Salu was literally taken to school by Lawrence Martin, a top partner from Foley Hoag’s Washington office. Mr Salu did not help his case as he made contradictory statements and his transcript appeared to have been written in a hurry.

In one utterly ridiculous instance, Mr. Salu, despite being presented with Skanga’s Statement of Annual Returns 2006-2008 certified as true by the Corporate Affairs Commission and the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, argued that Skanga directors weren’t aware that such filling has been made.
Clearly stated in the documents were the shareholders of Skanga and the number of shares they owned, yet Mr. Salu said, “Skanga’s Directors were not aware of these filings.”

Further, in a desperate attempt to discredit the defendant, Mr. Salu unwittingly revealed that Skanga might have been consistently submitting false statements of return to the CAC. He argued that the court should disregard Skanga’s CAC certified Statement of Returns presented by the defendant on the ground that the accounting firm employed by Skanga to audit its account, Dynamic Premier, has no listed address and “is not related to any professional entity as it is customary in Nigeria and the rest of the world.”

Mr. Salu did not reply written questions  sent to him via email about his involvement in the case. He also did not return calls made to his office phone number.

String of misfortunes
The Venezuelan affair is one in the series of financial losses the mustachios ex-governor has suffered since he left office. A business stint gone awry in South Africa saw him losing millions of dollars. According to news reports, After the death of his South African partner in a joint venture, Mr. Igbinedion tried but failed to reclaim his investment in the business, which he did through his late partner to avoid South African regulators on the lookout for investors with dirty money.

Mr. Igbinedion then moved his business base to Sierra Leone where Skanga became one of the leading fishing companies in the country. It is alleged that Mr. Igbinedion also owns some of the most expensive real estates in the country. However, Sierra Leonean media reports suggest that Skanga may also be going through a difficult phase in the West African country. There was a report about violent protests against the company by dissatisfied youth.

The loss of over N3 billion to the fraudster in the oil import deal also appears to have sounded the death knell of Skanga operations in Nigeria. When  visited Skanga’s official address in upscale Victoria Island, the premises had been overtaken by weeds and looked desolate. In fact, the Lagos State government has sealed the property for defaulting on land use tax and has placed a notice for an order to sell the property.
Intrigues and lies

True to the observation of Skanga’s first law firm, Robinson Brog, the company has approached the lawsuit in manner that left more to be desired. The firm has done everything to shield important persons involved in the case from testifying. In utter disregard of facts contained in officially verified documents, it has lied about the ownership of the company, and under curious circumstances, has alleged losing certain vital documents requested by defense counsels.
It seems Skanga’s approach to pursuing the lawsuit is to tell lies and which it further attempts to cover up by more lies.

During his deposition, which was conducted via Skype, Mr Igbinedion said he could not remember when Skanga was established. He also denied ever holding any shares in Skanga. But certified copies of Skanga’s Statement of Annual Returns show that Mr. Igbinedion was the principal shareholder of Skanga with 12 million shares.

Mr. Igbinedion also lied about his money laundering conviction. He said he was convicted for what he termed “political negligence.” He also lied that the Federal government seized none of his properties.

Mr. Salu further described Mr Igbinedion’s money laundering trial and conviction as “a corrupt political inquisition that is fairly common in Nigerian politics.
“After he served his two terms in office and left office, political opponents instituted kangaroo criminal proceedings against him for ‘neglect’ in listing one of his personal accounts that had been dormant for a while. His fine was less than $20,000, that is, the amount in the account at the time,” he said.
Curiously, six years after it first instituted the lawsuit, Skanga has not served Arevenca and Mr González a notice of the suit and in fact has not made any effort to serve them, according to court documents.

Skanga also refused to share the record of its correspondence with Arevenca when requested by PDVSA lawyers. Managing Director of Skanga, Christian Imoukhuede claimed his Yahoo email account was hacked and he lost access to it. He said he lost the mails in his inbox, sent, trash and all his contacts after Yahoo restored the email. However, He said the emails in his inbox was “partially restored” after he changed his browser from Mozilla Firefox to Internet Explorer.

A computer scientist, Alexander Gessen, employed by PDVSA to do a forensic analysis of Mr. Imoukhuede’s laptop said his account of how he lost the emails was not “credible.”

“Merely switching internet browser is not an industry recognized method of recovering deleted emails. Nor does it offer plausible explanation why inbox items would be restored, but sent items would not be. I am not aware of any way in which merely switching Internet browsers would result in recovery of deleted emails,” he said.

Just like it did with Bright Igbinedion, Skanga also did everything possible to shield another director, Adebayo Osho from appearing as witnesses.  It particularly contested the deposition of Mr. Osho who was its Nigerian lawyer and a listed shareholder of the company with 2.5 million shares. Mr. Osho is the proprietor of the law firm, Adebayo Osho and Company, Skanga’s lawyers objected to the deposition of Mr. Osho on the ground that he was the company lawyer and might break the client-lawyer confidentiality during deposition.

Efforts  to interview Mr. Osho were unsuccessful. A lawyer who has an office at the same address as him said he vacated his office three years ago without leaving his new contact address. All the contact phone numbers on his website were also not functional.

Bilikiss Abiola, founder and CEO of Nigeria’s first recycling company, Wecyclers Corporation tells us how she’s using her recycling business to help unemployed youth raise money to reach their goals, and also to encourage and educate Nigerians about waste management and the benefits of recycling.
“About fifty percent of the youths in Nigeria are unemployed because it is very difficult to find a job in Nigeria. So people see Wecyclers as a way to save money for some kind of goal. We help people who are saving money to go to college or saving to start a business. We have a localised model we operate at Wecyclers; our low-cost cargo tricycles which collect the waste from households that register with us. We put them on a weekly schedule for waste collection”. Like any businesses, Abiola and the Wecyclers team still face many challenges. One in particular is actually making a profit from collecting recyclable materials. They practice an incentive system that rewards people with points that can eventually be cashed in for rewards. “People don’t really have access to waste collection, neither do they understand waste management and as a result they are affected by negative informalities like health, so to impact their economic situation, we are rendering our services to help improve the situation of people, “ Abiola adds.

DELEGATES at the on- going National Conference  Tuesday voted that henceforth, Churches and Mosques will be paying tax to the federal government, just as they also agreed that Federal and state governments should no longer fund Christian and Muslim pilgrimages to the Holy  lands.
These were part of the resolutions reached yesterday during discussions of report of Religion Committee.
The decision to make religious bodies pay taxes came up when a delegate representing Civil Organisations, Mallam Naseer Kura during his contribution on the report had raised it that religious leaders were making much money and should be taxed.
Also in his contribution, a delegate representing the Nigeria Guild of Editors, Isaac Ighure however frowned at the situation where pastors and heads of churches make too much money with some of them owning private jets, just as he stressed that they should be made to pay taxes and the elite class must stop abusing the little ones in the society, “some people buy private jets when people in their churches are suffering and living in abject poverty, they should be made to pay taxes.”
WHAT DO YOU THINK  should churches and Mosques pay taxes?

The boy was reportedly assigned some chores but instead of doing them, he went out to play with his peers.
This incurred the wrath of the Obiefule couple who went on to beat him to death. The police were informed of the incident by an anonymous source who called them.
It was gathered that the Obiefules were always beating the boy and neighbours had always warned them of its implications.
It was learnt that Mbanozo was asked to carry out some domestic duties by his guardians, but he allegedly went to play with his peers on Children’s Day.
When his guardians saw him playing, they started beating him until he died, a source said.
Police spokesperson Ngozi Braide, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP), confirmed the incident.
She said: “The DPO, while on patrol with his men, received an anonymous call that a man and his wife had beaten a boy living with them to death.

21813  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / WAEC Website Hacker Arrested Who Charged N5,000 per Subject In Edo State on: 28-05-2014 09:37 AM
A 31- year-old man, Akharamen Ehizokhai, alleged to have hacked into the website of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has been arrested by the Edo State Police Command.

The alleged fraudster was said to have opened a website where he posted fake questions and answers of Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) for candidates on agreed fees.
He allegedly charged per subject and had been involved in the illicit deal for two years. On the internet, the suspect allegedly collects N5,000 per subject.
Some of the students who got in touch with the suspect were said to have been directed to pay into a bank account with the name Akharamen Ehizokhai Favour.
Following persistent reports by parents and candidates over the alleged fraudulent activities of the suspect in Edo and neighbouring states, detectives from the Edo Command were detailed to trail him. Consequently, he was arrested in Ekpoma.
He was paraded by the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Funso Adebanjo. The suspect admitted to have committed the crime, saying the purpose was to make money by defrauding unsuspecting WAEC candidates.
According to him, “ I have been into this business for some time now and it is because I have no other means of livelihood. I am sorry and I want God to help me out of this problem”.
Adebanjo described the suspect as the leader of a syndicate that hacks various websites of institutions in the country. “He has been into this business for over a year as we gathered and his activities have frustrated many candidates who wanted to pass exams through quick means. We got information about him and trailed him.
This is another 419 and because a lot of our children these days don’t want to read for exams they fall victims. I want to use this opportunity to advise students to read their books or face failure.
And it is also unfortunate that sometimes parents indulge in this illicit act by giving their children money to pay people like this. This is wrong and that is why we are noticing lots of failures these days in examinations and that is not good for our country. Parents must resist the temptation of ensuring that their children pass exams by all means so that we will put this kind people out of job. We are going to charge him to court for fraud”.
Parading 32 other suspects, Adebanjo stated that five were arrested for robbery, nine for stealing, two for cultism and unlawful possession of firearm, one for abduction and two for fraud. The Police Commissioner listed the items recovered from the suspects to include 12 guns, five live ammunition, 67 cartridges, seven laptop computers and two vehicles.

21818  Forum / The Buzz Central / Obi Emelonye (Movie Director) Arrested for Using Drones To Camera in Lagos on: 27-05-2014 11:44 AM

Excellent Film making requires advanced technology. In Hollywood, cameras are used from different angles to be able to capture scenes properly and project the desired final product for viewers. Unfortunately, the lack of resources has hampered such progress in Nollywood.
Award winning film director Obi Emelonye who directed both ‘Mirror Boy’ and ‘Last Flight To Abuja’ has been arrested for taking aerial shots of Lagos using drone cameras and has been taken into custody. Camera drones are a relatively cheap way for filmmakers to take aerial shots, some as low as $1,000.
Just before being taken into custody, he had this to say:
Just been arrested with my team from the UK by Lagos TV for taking aerial shots of Lagos around Shoprite Ikeja; using remote helicopters. As a media house they should understand what we are trying to do. But they want to put me in jail for making Lagos look great. I am resigned to my fate and allowed God to take control. Challenges we face in trying to grow the industry. Pray for me and pray for Nigeria. #free-obi”.
Amazon.com are planning to use drones for making delivery of packages to customers, Facebook and Google planning to use drones to make internet available for citizens in low incomes countries. So why should a film director who is using a drone be arrested?
