Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / OAU Student Builds Wind and Solar Powered Car For Final Year Project |
on: 15-05-2014 11:37 AM
| His contraption is still a prototype and not suitable for everyday use yet (The battery requires about 4-5 hours to charge and is so heavy that he had to modify the suspensions to bear the weight of the battery) but it has already brought a new, possible solution to the major problem with electric cars–charging the battery. Solar powered electric cars aren’t new, but adding a wind-turbine to augment the solar charger when the car is in motion is something I personally haven’t come across as an idea before. It in theory, would make it possible to drive and charge at night when there is no sunlight. Segun, who finishes his exams tomorrow, isn’t deterred by his main challenges which he states are finding the appropriate materials for his car, and people who tell him he is wasting his time building it and plans to keep improving the car till it is “Nigeria’s future car” | | |

Forum / Sports / Mourinho is a fool for calling me an old man – Eto’o |
on: 15-05-2014 10:57 AM
| "Today, I am 33 years old. And it is not because a fool called me an old man that you must believe it. And you may have noticed that the old man was better than the youngsters. Some believe I am going to retire in the United States or in the Middle East, but I have regained the joy of the Champions League and I am going to carry on playing in the Champions League.
He continued, "Where? I am not going to tell you. But I am going to carry on playing because physically and mentally I feel great. So I am going to go to this World Cup and to the next one when I will be 37. Some did it at 42, so I can still play in two more World Cups." Do you think Africa can have their say at the World Cup in Brazil?I hope so. Because people think Africa are just there for the show. And it is because football leaders don’t respect us that our opponents don’t respect us. But look at the main European clubs, where a lot of Africans are shining! Take Manchester City as an example, and look at the goals scored by Yaya Touré. If it was Messi, we will be talking about it for three years. Côte d’Ivoire are the best African side today. They are above the rest on paper, but they must win. Africa must fight to get as far as possible and why not win the World Cup. People will say I am crazy, but if I am not crazy why would I go to Brazil? For holidays? How do you feel about this World Cup which could well be your last one, and what is your future at Chelsea? Thanks for informing me that it will be my last World Cup. Today, I am 33 years old. And it is not because a fool called me an old man that you must believe it. And you may have noticed that the old man was better than the youngsters. Some believe I am going to retire in the United States or in the Middle East, but I have regained the joy of the Champions League and I am going to carry on playing in the Champions League. Where? I am not going to tell you. But I am going to carry on playing because physically and mentally I feel great. So I am going to go to this World Cup and to the next one when I will be 37. Some did it at 42, so I can still play in two more World Cups. Do you fear Brazil?I have never been afraid. If you are scared, don’t become a football player. But you need to have respect for your opponents. It will be eleven men against eleven men. It is true, Cameroon lost to Brazil in 1994, but I was part of the team which defeated Brazil at the Confederations Cup, and I scored a great goal to Dida in the 88th minute. And then we beat them again at the Olympics. It tells you that football is not an exact science. It is going to be difficult, for sure, but in football everything is possible. I have a lot of respect for all those great players, but I am not afraid. We will have our chances, and we need to take them. | | |

Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Police Nab Personnel For Extorting Money From Motorists |
on: 15-05-2014 10:21 AM
| IMO State Police Command has arrested its personnel for extorting money from motorists on the highway. The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, came on the heels of raging complaints from motorists over the level of extortion being experienced in the state since the command reintroduced stop and search operation. “ The command has received a number of complaints from motorists that the stop and search operation had turned to extortion centres. I must also confirm that the special team set up by the Commissioner of Police to monitor what our men do on the road, arrested some policemen for varying offences,” Enwerem said. While noting that those picked up by the CP’s special team were currently explaining their acts to the Command, the PPRO also appealed to motorists to report all acts of extortion to his office for commensurate action. “ The rules governing stop and search operations are very clear and any policeman who goes out to do what he likes on the road is definitely on his own,” Enwerem warned. Some motorists who spoke to us in Owerri, expressed serious concern that most of the policemen on the roads were no longer interested in truly finding out the identities of the passengers or the goods being ferried by vehicles. Their anger boiled over as soldiers who station themselves close to Capitol Hotel, along Owerri-Okigwe highway, have joined the team of extortionists on Imo roads. Investigations also revealed that at the World Bank Housing Estate, Owerri, the policemen extort money from motorists who avoid the bad spots close to Ideal Hotel roundabout. | | |

on: 15-05-2014 10:02 AM
| LOKOJA —Six women were, yesterday, arraigned before a Lokoja Chief Magistrate Court over their alleged involvement in the kidnap of two children of Kogi State House of Assembly Speaker, Alhaji Momoh-Jimoh Lawal. The accused persons include Bilikis Lawal, Raliat Musa, Rabiyat Mohammed, Zainab Ismaila, Aminat Ibrahim and Nafisat Abdullahi. They were charged with criminal conspiracy and kidnapping contrary to Section 97 of the Penal Code Law and Sections 3(a) and 7(a) of the Kogi State Kidnapping, Thuggery and other Related Offences (Prohibition) Law 2010. The prosecution led by Mohammed Abaji told the court that a gang of four persons armed with sophisticated weapons invaded the residence of the Speaker on April 15, 2014, and kidnapped two of his sons, Hafiz Lawal, 3, and Ogirima Lawal, 6. The two children are yet to be recovered. He said the abductors forcefully took the children away in their mother’s car, a dark-blue Toyota Yaris with number plate, Lagos AKD 224 AY, and latter demanded N200 million ransom for the release of the children using the hand set and telephone number of the first accused, Mrs Bilikisu Wahab. He further said investigation carried out by security agencies led to the arrest of five other suspects, even as some other suspects were still at large. Lead counsel to the accused persons, Miss Safiya Abdullahi, orally applied for bail of her clients but Abaji opposed the application, asking the court to take cognizance of the severity of the offence. In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Alhassan Hussain refused to grant the accused persons bail, saying: “ These offences are by no means weighty, pandemic and on a steady rise of late. Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Soldiers Mutiny In Maiduguri |
on: 14-05-2014 05:19 PM
| We has learnt that soldiers from the newly formed 7th Division of the Nigerian Army today mutinied in their barracks against Major General Abubakar Mohammed, their General Officer Commanding. Two soldiers who spoke to our correspondent revealed that numerous soldiers shot sporadically into the air at Maimalari Barracks, which is also home to the Artillery Corps, the Ordinance, as well as army signals in Maiduguri. The 7th Division was formed only recently as a unit devoted to fighting the war against Boko Haram. General Mohammed was appointed as the GOC in February 2014. One of the sources revealed that the situation was extremely tense, adding that the GOC escaped by the whiskers as the mutiny by angry soldiers could have degenerated into a personal attack on him. Our sources said the soldiers became enraged when they saw the bodies of their colleagues ambushed by Boko Haram terrorists in Chibok, a town in Borno State that has spurred global protests over the abductions of schoolgirls by members of the extremist Islamist sect. The restive soldiers complained that their superior have not provided them with adequate weaponry with which to fight the war against the better-armed Boko Haram militants. “ We the soldiers don’t have the kind of arms and ammunition that [Boko Haram] fighters have. So everyday, they kill our men anyhow, but it is never published in the media,” said one source. The other source also complained that the commanding officers “ are too busy ‘eating’ money. And they do not pay our allowances on time. And once [a soldier dies], nobody knows what happens to his allowances again.” The two soldiers also disclosed that the mutinying soldiers were fed up that their military commanders have not devised a troop rotation system to ensure that those in combat can get some rest before being redeployed to continue the bloody and frustrating war with Boko Haram insurgents. Residents who live near the barracks also told our local correspondent that they heard the sound of sporadic exchange of gunfire. “ We thought that may be Boko Haram was attacking and the army was trying to push them back,” one resident said. We could not immediately confirm the whereabouts of the GOC or reports of injuries in the barracks. | | |

Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Bonga oil spillage: 108 Ondo communities Petition NMAMA Over Strange Ailments |
on: 14-05-2014 04:01 PM
| About 108 riverine communities in Ilaje local government area of Ondo State have sent a “save our soul” petition to the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Management Agency (NMAMA) over the activities of Shell Petroleum Development Company in their areas. The communities alleged that they have been battling with strange ailments since Bonga Oil spillage, owned by Shell occurred in December 2011, on one of the oil facilities located off-shore of five Niger Delta states, which Ondo was among. This was contained in the petition signed by its Chairman, Prince Kumoye Fadiya, Vice-Chairman, Ilurimi Orimisan and Secretary, Sehinde Akinbami, which a copy was made available to DailyPost in Akure, the Ondo State capital today. They lamented that despite the assurance from the Oil Company that the oil spillage would cause no harm on the residents, their people are now dying on a daily basis. The petition reads, “ It is part of the admission of Shell that, her Company deployed ships and air plane to spray dispersant on the oil spilled with a view to sinking the oil into the bottom of the sea.“ Though Shell claimed that the spill did not get to the shoreline of the coastal villages, but we want to state that dispersants and other chemicals used were sprayed on dispensed from the plane before the chemical gets to the oil on the sea which dispersant were carried by air, which no doubt, affected the vegetation and people living along to coastal villages.“ We are by this petition informing your agency/office that after the said spill and the attempted remedial measure put in place to sink the said spilled oil, strange ailments and other diseases have surfaced in the coastal communities which are strange to us. This strange ailment is prevalent among children to the effect that when they fall sick. It becomes very difficult and impossible for the Health Centres in the villages to treat them and are, therefore, referred to Specialist or General Hospital, several kilometres away at either Igbokoda or Okitipupa. “ The most unfortunate thing is that most of these children died before getting to the Hospital and the lucky ones among them, when tested suddenly develop shortage of blood, cough and other ailments which are strange to us.“We have been hearing from media report of communities in Delta, Rivers and Bayelsa, protesting and making representatives to the House of Representatives over the Bong Oil spill but in our own case, we have reported to Ondo State Ministry of Environment but nobody seem to listen to us” The communities are demanding for compensation from the Oil company and relief materials for their people. | | |

on: 14-05-2014 01:30 PM
| Two witch doctors in Tanzania have been arrested after a woman with albinism was hacked to death, police say. Her attackers removed one her legs and several fingers on Tuesday morning. Albinos have suffered widespread persecution in Tanzania, where witch doctors say magic potions made with albino body parts can bring good luck. Such killings have declined in recent years, but this latest attack has prompted a human rights group to call for all witch doctors to be banned. At a press conference on Wednesday, Under The Same Sun said the current regulation of witch doctors was clearly not working. It was said that currently all witch doctors have to apply for a certificate from the ministry of health and welfare to practice. The attack occurred in the village of Gasuma, in Simiyu province - a remote rural area in the north-west of the country where there have been killings of albinos before, our reporter says. The woman's left leg, two fingers from her left hand and a nail from one of her thumbs were removed. According to reports, campaigns against the discrimination of people living with albinism, the last killing of an albino in Tanzania was in February 2013. In recent years, the government has been also been trying to address the problem, and an albino MP was appointed several years ago. | | |

on: 14-05-2014 01:15 PM
| Swedish director Malik Bendjelloul, who won an Oscar for his 2012 documentary “Searching for Sugarman”, committed suicide in Stockholm, his brother said on Wednesday. “ I can confirm that it was suicide and that he had been depressed for a short period,” the 36-year old film-maker’s brother Johar Bendjelloul told newspaper Aftonbladet. “Life is not always so easy.” Bendjelloul was found dead in his apartment on Tuesday. Police spokeswoman Pia Glenvik did not specify the cause of his death but said no crime was suspected. He won the Academy Award for best documentary feature last year for “Searching for Sugarman”, telling the story of a musician who became famous without knowing it. Sixto Rodriguez made two albums in the early 1970s but then quit music. After disappearing, his records became huge hits, particularly in South Africa. “Searching for Sugarman” won various other awards, including best documentary prizes from Britain´s BAFTA and the Directors Guild of America, as well as two world cinema prizes at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. Rodriguez told newspaper Expressen that he was shocked over the filmmaker’s death following a concert in Chicago. “ Malik was a fantastic person,” he said. “ He was both unique and very friendly.” Born to an Algerian father and a Swedish mother in 1977 in the small southern town of Ystad, Bendjelloul moved to Stockholm as his career took off. He first discovered Rodriguez while travelling for six months in Africa in 2006, and was fascinated by his story. Rodriquez, the son of a Mexican immigrant family, was discovered by two producers in a bar. They helped him record his first album, “Cold Fact,” in 1970. It was a critical success, but did not sell well. His second album, “Coming from Reality” also showed talent, but flopped commercially. Rodriguez gave up his musical ambitions and ended up working in the construction industry. But while his records failed to take off at home, a bootleg copy made it to South Africa where it struck a chord with progressive young whites exasperated with the apartheid system. With the artist untraceable, bizarre stories began to emerge about him, including one that claimed that he had committed suicide by setting himself on fire on stage. In the end, the curiosity of two young fans broke through the myths: they found he was still alive, living in the United States. They brought him to South Africa where he was greeted as a hero in 1998, playing six sold-out concerts. “Searching for Sugarman” tells the story of those two fans’ search for Rodriguez, and of his musical renaissance. Since the film gained international success, Rodriguez has relaunched his career filling arenas with new fans. | | |
