81  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Court Orders Billionaire to Pay His Ex-Wife $1bn in Divorce Settlement on: 31-05-2024 03:38 PM

A court has ordered South Korean billionaire and chairman of SK Group conglomerate, Chey Tae-won to pay his ex-wife 1.38 trillion won ($1bn) in cash. According to BBC, this is the country’s largest-ever divorce settlement. The divorce settlement comes almost a decade after Chey Tae-won’s marriage ended in scandal, following the revelation of his extramarital affair and the birth of a child with his mistress. On Thursday, the Seoul High Court ruled in favour of Roh So-young, awarding her a share of Chey Tae-won’s company assets after their 35-year marriage.

Roh So-young is the daughter of former South Korean President Roh Tae-woo. Chey’s lawyers announced plans to appeal the court’s decision, arguing that the ruling was based solely on his ex-wife’s version of events. The Seoul High Court’s award of 1.38 trillion won to Roh So-young marks a substantial increase from the 66.5 billion won settlement initially ruled by a lower court in 2022.

A lower family court had previously denied Roh So-young’s request to receive a portion of Chey Tae-won’s SK shares, but the Seoul High Court overturned this decision on Thursday, ruling that the shares should be considered joint assets and awarding her a portion of them.

The ruling said, “It was reasonable to rule that, as his wife, Roh played a role in increasing the value of SK Group and Chey’s business activity.” The court estimated Chey Tae-won’s wealth to be approximately 4 trillion won, and accordingly, Roh So-young, with whom he has three children, is entitled to around 35% of that amount.

Acknowledging Roh So-young’s contributions, the court said she had facilitated the growth of Chey Tae-won’s business by helping to resolve regulatory issues, and additionally, her father, former President Roh Tae-woo, had provided influential support, serving as a “protective shield” for Chey Jong-hyon, the former chairman of SK Group, thereby contributing to the company’s success.

The judgment highlighted that Chey had not shown any remorse “for his foul behaviour in the course of the trial… nor respect for monogamy.” The court added that it factored in Roh So-young’s emotional pain and distress resulting from Chey Tae-won’s infidelity when determining the increased settlement amount. In their argument, Chey’s legal team contended that his ex-wife’s political connections had actually hindered his business endeavours rather than benefiting them. Shares of SK Inc., a global semiconductor giant with diverse interests in telecoms, chemicals, and energy, surged 9% following the court’s ruling.

85  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / FG Releases ₦3.8 Billion To Support Nigerian Students Stranded Abroad on: 31-05-2024 02:04 PM

The sum of ₦3.8 billion has been allocated by the Tinubu-led Federal government to support stranded Nigerian scholars in foreign countries. The Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Sonny Echono, shared this information on Thursday in Abuja during a meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on TETFund. He mentioned that the fund has provided support to 1,500 scholars, totalling ₦3.8 billion in funding.

In response to the reported delay in scholarship payments, Echono clarified that the recent spike in foreign exchange rates has raised concerns among scholars from various countries, including the United Kingdom and Malaysia. Echono confirmed that these concerns had been communicated to the National Assembly, the Presidential Villa, the Ministry of Education, and even TETFund.

“We were happy that the response was very positive and that was why we were able to secure the President’s approval and do what we called the bail out or assistance. “We did observe that part of the challenge. “In the past, each time we send funding for the institutions, we send money directly to the schools and it is the responsibility of the institutions to now remit to the students.

“However, for illegitimate and legitimate reasons, many of the institutions came back to us and complained that it takes a whole lot of time to process the transfers to central bank. “But we now pay directly to the institution as part of our intervention,”
he said. Echono disclosed that Nigeria’s performance in research grants has improved, moving from 9th to 7th place in Africa.
86  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Manufacturer Of Huggies A Baby Diaper Company To Shut Down N100m Investment In Nigeria on: 31-05-2024 01:52 PM

Kimberly-Clark will soon shut down its Ikorodu production facility due to economic challenges despite a $100 million investment two years ago.  Sources revealed that the plant has been producing below capacity from late 2023 into 2024 due to the harsh economic environment within the country, according to Nairametrics,   Kimberly-Clark, a multinational consumer goods corporation, initially established its presence in Nigeria in 2012. However, due to unfavorable economic conditions, the company halted its operations in 2019 after five years of operation.

Nevertheless, Kimberly-Clark made a successful comeback in 2022 with the unveiling of a cutting-edge $100 million production facility in Ikorodu, Lagos state.  The company’s product portfolio in Nigeria includes Huggies diapers, Kotex sanitary pads, and other hygiene and personal care products. A source who claimed anonymity told Nairametrics that the company since late 2022 has battled with high energy costs, raw materials, and reduced demand from customers due to the prevailing economic situation. As a result, this has led to downsizing and reduced production time from every day of the week to just Mondays to Thursdays.

The company currently spends around N100 million on power generation monthly aside from maintenance costs and its monthly fixed spend on operations has risen over N500 million. According to the source, “Our first two years were fantastic in terms of sales growth and market shares within the diaper industry. Fast forward into late 2022 and 2023 was (sic) really bad years for the coy due to economic situation. “Running cost is extremely on the high side. Our fixed spent on a monthly basis is above N500 million and we spent about N100 million on just gas consumption for powering the gas engine aside maintenance. The company has two assets and for last year, these assets didn’t run for like 90 days in 365 days. “Earlier this year, the company had to downsize to 2 shifts from 4 shifts. We run 24 hours and 7 days and 365 days before but currently (sic) we don’t run on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday anymore because of the economic situation. There is already an embargo on external recruitment. The company is looking for ways to reduce cost since it is not making a profit.”

The source also disclosed that the high production cost stems from the increased raw material cost since it is import-based. When Kimberly-Clark commenced operations in Nigeria about three years ago, it allocated funds to sustain its activities for an estimated five-year period. The company anticipated that by the end of this period, revenue generated from its Nigerian operations would be sufficient to support its continued presence in the country. However, according to a source with first-hand knowledge of the situation, the company is unlikely to resort to importing products, unlike its competitor Procter and Gamble.

This suggests that Kimberly-Clark will not be engaging in official transactions in Nigeria. The planned closure of Kimberly-Clark’s operations in Nigeria is reminiscent of the exit of other manufacturers from the country in recent years. Furthermore, the closure of operations by Kimberly-Clark means that two of the three leaders in the diaper and personal care industry in Nigeria (P&G and Kimberly-Clark) have ended production in the last one year.

93  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Simon Ekpa Claims 30 Million People Voted ‘During Self-Referendum’ on: 31-05-2024 01:08 PM

Simon Ekpa, the self-acclaimed Prime Minister of The Biafra Republic Government in Exile has made a claim. He claimed that over 30 million Biafrans have voted for self-referendum. The group’s claim is coming amid the grounding of activities across the South-East as residents stayed indoors in observance of sit-at-home order on Thursday, May 30. Mr Simon Ekpa, who heads BRGIE as the Prime Minister, disclosed this in a statement through his official account handle on Thursday.

Ekpa claimed that the flare with which Biafrans embraced its E-voting and physical voting showed their enthusiasm for liberation. According to him, the number of Biafrans who have voted for self-referendum in the last four months surpassed the number of voters in the 2023 Nigerian presidential election which stood at 25,286,616. He noted that the voting kicked off in February and ended on May 30, adding that the next stages two and three of Biafra Liberation would commence in June and last till November 28, 2024. BRGIE had cited marginalization, underdevelopment, insecurity and poverty in the southeast region as justification for self-referendum.

“Biafra Self Referendum has recorded over 30 million votes on the last day of stage one”, he boasted. BRGIE earlier stated that it is clear that Biafrans are ready to exit Nigeria after decades of marginalization. “It is clear that Biafrans are ready to go. The first stage of the E-voting and physical voting ends in May 2024. There are three stages. “Stage one will (which commenced February 1, 2024, with the E-voting) end on May 30th, stage two will start on June 1st and end in August, stage 3 starts in September and ends on November 28th, 2024. Indeed, we are on the verge of achieving liberation”, he said. Recall that BRGIE declared May 29 to 31st, 2024, as sit-at-home in honour of the slayed Biafran heroes of the 1967-1970 Civil War in Nigeria.

95  Forum / The Buzz Central / Naira Marley’s Cybercrime Trial Stalled on: 31-05-2024 12:59 PM

The alleged cybercrime trial of singer, Azeez Fashola a.k.a Naira Marley, was stalled on Thursday at the Federal High Court in Lagos. The trial could not proceed because parties in the suit are still awaiting approval of a fiat by the chief judge of the Federal High Court. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is prosecuting Fashola for alleged cyber crime. The anti-graft agency preferred the charges on May 14, 2019.

Fashola, who sang the popular song “Am I a Yahoo Boy”, was arraigned on May 20, 2019, before Justice Nicholas Oweibo, who pleaded not guilty. Oweibo granted him bail in the sum of two million naira with two sureties in like sum. Witnesses were still being led in evidence by EFCC when Oweibo was transfered out of the Lagos division of the court. The case was, therefore, transferred to Justice Isaac Dipeolu. On March 6, when the case was first mentioned before Dipeolu, both defence and prosecution counsel confirmed to the judge that there was a pending fiat awaiting a response from the chief judge.

The judge consequently adjourned the case until Thursday (May 30) for the report. On Thursday, journalists learnt that the fiat had yet to be approved. There is no slated date yet for the continuation of the trial. According to the EFCC, the defendant committed the offences on different dates between Nov. 26, 2018, and Dec.11, 2018, as well as on May 10, 2019. The commission alleged that Fashola and his accomplices conspired to use different Access Bank automated teller machine cards to defraud their victims. It alleged that the defendant used a bank credit card issued to another person in a bid to obtain fraudulent financial gains.

The EFCC also said that the defendant possessed counterfeit credit cards belonging to different people, with intent to defraud, which, it said, amounted to theft. The alleged offences contravene Sections 1 23 (1) (b), 27 (1), and 33(9) of the Cyber Crime (Prohibition) Prevention Act, 2015.

On Friday, the Leader of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, disclosed that the African continent will undergo a transformation, with former colonial powers seeking assistance from its nations. Primate Ayodele revealed that a time is coming when Africa will rule the world and will stop being a dumping ground for Western countries. In a statement by its spokesman, Oluwatosin Osho, he noted that some countries will be at the forefront of realizing a new Africa, explaining that the new dawn would pass through the countries and spread to other parts of the continent.

According to Ayodele: “A new Africa is coming and there will no longer be setbacks. Africa will no longer be a dumping ground but a major force to reckon with globally. I am seeing a unified currency that will exit the dollar in the continent. The continent will have freedom and will be liberated. There is serious hope for Africa and the days are closer.
“The countries that will make a new Africa achievable are Malawi, Gambia, Senegal, Niger, Chad, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Rwanda, Mozambique, Namibia, Togo, Benin, Lesotho, Cape Verde, South Sudan, Botswana, Mauritius, Tunisia, Morocco, and Libya. There will be a time when colonial masters will start coming to Africa for help, the continent will rule the world soon.’’

Primate Ayodele foretold that the continent will be unified and establish formidable institutions that will further boost unity. He mentioned that the new Africa will save nations from slavery that came up as a result of economic challenges.

‘’There is going to be a unified African currency, infrastructure, free trade zone to bring all African nations together, it might be very difficult but a revolution that will initiate this idea will come up in the continent. There will be a unified customs in Africa, especially in ECOWAS nations; The continent will also have unified judiciary and legislative institutions. “A new Africa will come to save nations from slavery that arose due to economic difficulties. Majority of African nations have sold their birthright to Russia, America, UK, France and China,’’ he said.

However, he warned leaders in the continent to be careful against division and laws that will not be favourable. He warned of an impending terrorism threat from 2026 and natural disasters in countries where it has never happened before.

‘’African nations should wake up now because there is a lot that will happen in the continent. There will be a unified force that will be fighting terrorism because Africa will be facing a major terrorism threat as from 2026. The continent must be careful of border issues.

‘’As from 2027, Africa will face serious flooding issues and natural disasters like Earthquake and Hurricane. The continent must fight meningitis, polio and Ebola virus again. The leaders must rise to fight for Africa to avoid a crisis. Africa must not be divided because of any form of interest. The continent will make new immigration laws that will not be favorable. Let’s be careful so that there won’t be an uprising against governments,’’
he added.

More than 300 women's organizations in Nigeria, Under the umbrella of Womanifesto, have jointly urged for the immediate boycott of Erisco Foods products due to the ongoing detention of Chioma Okoli, a tomato paste reviewer imprisoned for her remarks about the company's product. A Federal High Court in Abuja ordered Chioma Okoli to be remanded at the Suleja Correctional Centre over the review of tomato products made by Erisco Foods Limited on Facebook.

Chioma Okoli was arraigned on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at the Federal High Court in Abuja before Hon. Justice Peter Lifu. Okoli pleaded not guilty to the two counts of conspiracy and cyberstalking levelled against her. She was remanded in Suleja Correctional Centre till Friday, May 31, 2024, for a ruling on her bail application. However, the women groups in a statement jointly signed on Friday, called on all Nigerian women to join them in boycotting Erisco Foods products with immediate effect. The groups also called on the government to come to the aid of Chioma as its silence is deafening; loudly telling them that consumers cannot voice their opinions about goods they purchased with their hard-earned money.

The groups added that in other countries where the health and nutritional well-being of the citizens are paramount, relevant government agencies would be at the forefront of the investigations into all Erisco Foods products and the corresponding labels instead of leaving the issue in the hands of those who prioritise profit to the lives and general well-being of 200 Million Nigerians.

The statement reads in part, "We call on all Nigerian women to join us to #BoycottErisco products with immediate effect, for the following reasons: The continued harassment & detention of Chioma Okoli. "The insufferable stress & trauma that has been inflicted on Chioma Okoli since September 2023 to date, which has also led to the loss of her pregnancy. "Loss of earnings and livelihood due to her inability to work and provide for her family as a direct consequence of the ongoing persecution and psychological molestation. "The apparent risk and threat to her life and flagrant abuse of her human rights.   "For being subjected to constant litigation for exercising her ‘freedom of speech and expression, including freedom to hold opinions, and to receive and impart information without interference’ as granted to her under section 39 of the 1999 Nigerian constitution.

"We are concerned about her ability to get justice in a country with a reputation for compromised justice.   "We salute Chioma's continued courage, bravery and tenacity in the face of intimidation and threats. We will continue to support her quest for justice.   "It is worthy to note that in other countries where the health and nutritional well-being of the citizens are paramount, relevant government agencies would be at the forefront of the investigations into all Erisco products and the corresponding labels. Instead of leaving this landmark issue in the hands of those who prioritise profit over the lives and general well-being of 200 Million Nigerians.” "We call on the government to come to the aid of Chioma as your silence is deafening; loudly tell us that we the consumers cannot voice our opinions about goods we purchased with our hard-earned money," t
he statement added.

In a post she shared on IG, Dolapo said she was passing through the school this morning and heard the pupils singing the old National anthem. She said she has alerted the police to come and arrest them and will ensure they get charged to court.

’If, as at today, three days after the President of Federal Republic of Nigeria signed and assented the New National Anthem into law and you are not able to recite it in a whole, then you are a suspect "I just passed through a private school and I could here them singing the old National Anthem! "Arise oh compatriots"! (We are no more arising as compatriots, it is Nigeria we are hailing now).

"I have called police to come and arrest not only the proprietor but the head teacher inclusive (I will make sure they are charged to court) Don't ask me for what offence? Consult any lawyer to learn more........ Anyone not singing the new national anthem is sabotaging Nigeria L, I won't tolerate any unpatriotic attitude....''
