7  Forum / The Buzz Central / Nigeria's Movie Industry now Nameless as Guy Buys Trademark for ‘Nollywood’ In on: 21-05-2014 02:03 PM

Nigeria's movie industry popularly called Nollywood is currently been threatened as ‘Nollywood’ is now a registered trademark owned by a Nigerian guy living in the States, Nicholas Opara.
According to the United States Patent and Trademark office, the trademark was issued to Nicholas of Kirkland, WA. on December 03, 2013. What this means is that Nicholas Opara now has legal ownership of the term "Nollywood" and every time someone uses that term, they either have to get permission from him or pay him royalties, making it a potential cash cow for him.

Anyone using the word Nollywood in any of his products or services without Nicholas Opara's permission faces legal liability for trademark infringement and there's a report that he, allegedly, has already sent a cease and desist letter to a company using the word ‘Nollywood.’

9  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Wonders shall never end! Human Skull Found Inside A Church Ceiling In Lagos   on: 21-05-2014 01:00 PM

Human Skull

Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions said 49-year-old Samson Adeneye and a woman, Oyerinde Olawunmi, 48, have a case to answer in a matter in which a human skull was found in the ceiling of an orthodox church in Lagos.

Two policemen attached to Special Anti-robbery Squad – ASP Franklin Alade and Cpl Deleojo Odunayo – were also implicated in the matter, for abuse of office.

A human skull was found in the ceiling of the St. Peter Cherubim and Seraphim church on Moses Adebisi Street, in the Ketu area of Lagos.
Prior to the incident, Adeneye and Olawunmi, who were former members of the church, were said to have sent threat text messages to some of the church’s ministers.
The two suspects were said to have accused the pastors of occultism and threatened to deal with them and kill them.
Both suspects had alerted the two SARS officers that there was a case of gun-running in the assembly. And the policemen reportedly stormed the assembly without any search warrant and headed for the ceiling where they allegedly found the item.
According to Punch, further investigations by the police revealed that the two ex-embers might have arranged the object to implicate the pastors, as suggested by earlier text messages sent to them.
They were subsequently arrested and charged to Court. The matter was earlier adjourned for DPP’s advice.
The DPP, in its advice signed by the Deputy Director, Adegboyega Bajulaiye, said:
“After carefully considering the facts available in the duplicate case file, this office is of the view that there are sufficient facts to establish a prima facie case of conspiracy to commit felony to wit; offering violence to officiating ministers of religion, written threat to kill and publication of false news which is likely to cause fear and alarm to the public...
“Facts available in the duplicate case file reveal that prior to January 19, 2013, there was a malice that brewed up over the years between Apostle Albert Samson and Samson Adeneye, which culminated into unauthorised search on the premises of Albert by men of SARS, led by ASP Franklin Alade, on the trumped-up allegation of gunrunning. This act of the police officers, which was believed to have been instigated by Adeneye, amount to abuse of office….”
The advice further stated that the two defendants had been sending death threat messages to the ministers, that were meant to distract them from their duties as ministers.
On the matter of the skull, the advice said, “There is however a strong inference from the facts in the case file that Adeneye may have been instrumental to placing ritual objects, including human skulls, on the ceiling of Albert’s church because of his prior accusation of Albert being a ritualist. This will only amount to speculation and suspicion, which no matter how grave, cannot stand in the place of law, particularly in the absence of eyewitness account or unequivocal evidence of inference.”
The DPP said based on findings, Adeneye and Olawunmi, should be arraigned for conspiracy to commit felony, written threat to kill and publication of false information.
The magistrate, Mrs. A.O Adedayo, will give her position/ruling on the matter on July 1, 2014.

How-Police-Killed-23yrs-Old-Man-3-Days-After-Graduation
What could be worse than struggling to train a child in school only to be killed by agents of the state? It was a dream cut short. A bungled hope. The brightness in the family of the Opobiyis in Ilorin, Kwara State suddenly turned into eternal darkness with the killing of their son, Muyideen Mustapha Opobiyi.

The young man, whose life may have been on the service lane, finally got it terminated and dispatched out of the earth by some hot lead. Muyideen’s father, Alhaji Mustapha Oke-Odo Opobiyi, in tearful eyes declared that it was the police that killed his 23-year-old son.

Pa Opobiyi narrated how he had been labouring to train his son who just completed his secondary school education about six months ago at Command Day Secondary School, Maitama, Abuja.

Whilst waiting for the opportunity to further his studies, Muyideen had returned to Ilorin, his birthplace, three months ago. Not wanting to be loafing about in idleness, he convinced his father to allow him undertake computer training. His father agreed.

He got enrolled at the Da’rul Salam Computer Training Institute of Information and Technology, Ilorin. The young man was said to have been enthusiastic and boastful of acquiring computer education and was keen on flouting his niche over his classmates at Abuja.

His joy knew no bounds when the computer training programme finally came to an end on Saturday, the New Year eve. But fate, nay “enemies” would not allow him revel in his joy and hope of a better tomorrow. Just three days, yes three days after completing the programme, a flying bullet completed his sojourn here on earth. He was mowed down by a hot bullet. Who fired the bullet?

The police have however denied firing the bullet that killed Muyideen, whom sources said, was not part of those protesting the removal of subsidy on petrol.

But Pa Opobiyi was pointedly declarative: “the police killed my son”, he announced, adding that the autopsy carried out on the body of the victim at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) showed that he died of bullet wound. So who dun it?

Pa Opobiyi, drawing from the stoic disposition of a Muslim, however said he had accepted the ill fate that befell his son as the will of Allah. But he insists that his surrender to the will of the supernatural does not preclude the demand for justice.

He therefore said: “We, the members of the family are after justice.”

He argued that it is only the identification and punishment of the perpetrator of such evil act (through judicious prosecution) that could serve as a lesson to others who always feel that they are above the law when in uniform.

15  Forum / The Buzz Central / Borno State to spend N150m to rehabilitate 53 escapee girls, parents on: 21-05-2014 09:21 AM

Borno State governor, Kashim Shettima, yesterday announced that the state government would be spending N150million for the rehabilitation of the 53 chibok girls that escaped from Boko Haram captivity as well as their parents whose source of livelihood was affected by the abduction, Sahara Reporters reports.
The Governor made this announcement when he received the Presidential Fact Finding Committee on the missing girls in his office yesterday. Gov Shettima decried the notion by some people that the missing Chibok girls was a scam or that it was a staged attempt by the state government to stop emergency rule extension in the state. Continue...

He called out former Minister of Aviation, Kema Chikwe for casting doubts on the authenticity of the abducted girls. He said the missing Malaysian plane was a good example of what is happening now, saying that with all the theories mounting up of the possibility that the passengers are dead, rescue efforts with massive investment is still going on in the search of the missing plane.
"Now, while that is going on, here is Nigeria, there was a report that over 200 human creatures, young Nigerian girls about completing their secondary school education, were attacked in their school at night and whisked away like slaves in ancient years. And some Nigerians, one of them a former Minister and one time member of the Federal Executive Council which is the highest decision making body of this country, worst of all, a woman and a mother, came out to cast doubt over the abduction of these girls. That woman completely disregarded the sensitivity of that issue, the pains of the agonizing parents and our pains as a Government, to whom, the parents of these girls, cry out in desperation, unimaginable confusion and anguish. Every other unreasonable Nigerian that came to adopt that view, only anchored the unfortunate position that was first expressed by Mrs Kema Chikwe.” he said
The Governor also revealed that since the beginning of this year, N1billion has been spent on the rehabilitation of people and places that have experienced attacks from Boko Haram.
"In this year alone, we had spent close to one billion naira on victims. In Gwoza, we spent two hundred million naira for reconstruction of destroyed houses, markets, places of worship and to provide cash to victims so they could have something to rely on in the immediate term to feed themselves and families or start small businesses in the interim. In Bama, we spent three hundred million for same purpose; in Konduga we spent two hundred million naira" he said

19  Forum / The Buzz Central / Mother Of Abducted Chibok School Girl Dies on: 20-05-2014 08:15 PM

                weeping mother
The mother of one of the Chibok school girls abducted by Boko Haram has been confirmed dead.
The deceased identified as Mary Paul Lalai reportedly collapsed and died of heart attack after she got the news of the girls abduction.

Aimu Fona, a member representing Chibok constituency in the State House of Assembly disclosed this to newsmen.

The deceased has since been buried according to Christian rites at the Mbulabam Village in Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State.

The late Mary's husband who is mourning her is still hoping for the release of two of his daughters who are among the girls still held hostage by the dreaded sect.

Though some of the girls are back home and united with their families, it is believed that over 200 girls are still in Boko Haram's captivity.

The girls abduction has become a global issue and Nigeria has been getting help and support from foreign countries like the US, UK, China, Israel and others.

Boko Haram had asked the government release its detained members in exchange for the school girls but that proposal was rejected by the government.

According to an anonymous source, parents should stop hoping to get back their daughters anytime soon as their release may not be immediate so they do not keep dying of related diseases.

"Since they claim they have the bravado of the Americans not to negotiate, then these girls may surely spend the rest of their lives with those hooligans but I assure you, they will not be able to get back the girls by the use of force of arms this year. All they will be successful in is to give more publicity to the insurgents who have been longing for this kind of world publicity Al Qaeda enjoyed under Osama Bin Laden," the source said, while adding that all the frenzy by the international media has not and may never help secure the release of the girls.
