1  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Rivers APC Wants Me Dead –– Solomon Ndigbara on: 22-05-2014 06:45 AM

PRESS RELEASE: I wish to use this opportunity to debunk a media report published on May 21, 2014 in "The Nation Newspapers" in which the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) made a frivolous and spurious claim that the Honorable Minister For Education, Chief (Barr) Nyesom Wike paid the sum of N25million to me, Chief Solomon Ndigbara during his last visit.

I state for the records that this is a calculated attempt not just to smear my good name but a direct plot against my life by the Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi’s led All Progressive Congress in Rivers State.

It is on record that there had been several attempts at my life by...
the Rivers State Government which led to the institution of a legal action against the Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, Senator Magnus Abe, the Hon. Attorney General, Commissioner of Police and others in Suit No. FHC/PHC/CS/583/2011 where the cause of action was infringement of my fundamental human rights as a citizen of Nigeria.

As you may be aware, judgment was given in my favor and ever since then, I continue to receive threats even though they are yet to comply with the orders of the court with the payment of the N50million to me.

Rather than paying me the compensation awarded by the court, they now seek to kill me.

The APC in Rivers State should know that lying against me and placing their spies to monitor my personal life will not guarantee their success in the forth-coming elections in Rivers State.

As usual, the APC in Rivers State wants to send me away so that they can do their manipulation and terrorism in Rivers State ahead of the 2015 elections.

At a time I have committed my personal resources to peace building in Ogoniland, the APC in Rivers State wants to deceptively use lies to hatch their plot against my life.

I am therefore calling on the Nigerian Government, the United Nations High Commission For Human Rights, The United States Government, the U.K government and all lovers of peace and free societies to prevail
on the Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi led All Progressive Congress (APC) in Rivers State to spear my life.

He put the blame of terrorism on Nigeria's government and other African countries where they are operating:
“I have never called the United Nations to guard our security. Me, Yoweri Museveni to say that I have failed to protect my people and I call on the UN: I would rather hang myself. We prioritized national security by developing a strong Army, otherwise our Uganda would be like DRC, South Sudan, Somalia or Nigeria where militias have disappeared with school children.
"It would be a vote of no confidence in our country and citizens if we can’t guarantee our security? What kind of persons would we be?”

3  Forum / Politics / What Bring Back Our Girls Campaign Means To Me on: 22-05-2014 06:24 AM

My name is Umar Suraj Yakubu. I am 26 years old. I have a bachelors degree in Software Engineering and a post graduate certificate in Intelligent Systems Engineering. I got married less than 6 months ago. I am a husband, a son, a brother, a cousin, a nephew, a friend and a colleague.

Nigeria has a population of approximately 170million people. More than 70% of Nigeria's people are between the ages of 16 and 35. This is to say that I am approximately the same age as the average Nigerian. This is to say that I am YOU! If majority carries the vote in a democracy then we are directly responsible for our leadership and our future. The actions of our generation gives me HOPE, that the power that belongs to the people WILL return to the people.

In the #BringBackOurGirls Abuja Family I have found a real family, fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers and friends who share the same idea of a better and safer Nigeria as I do. I strongly believe with all my heart that Nigeria, our country has a brighter future.

We have waited year in year out, election after election for change, a better Nigeria but nothing. As a country we have been through a lot, and we have been VERY patient and forgiving. My friends, do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed. The bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress.

Last month more that 250 girls were abducted in a school in Chibok and that was the last straw for me. I realized that if I keep quiet, if we all keep quiet then ABSOLUTELY nothing will happen like other atrocities that happened and we have all unanimously condemned in the comfort of our homes and schools and offices. I decided, and I urge you all to join me, to join us, I urge you all to come out and we shall organize ourselves as peaceful citizens and demand from our government what we deserve, which is a safe Nigeria, where children can go to school safely and not get kidnapped, a safe Nigeria where you and I and 170million of us can go to the market or the motor park without getting killed by a bomb. A Nigeria where the young have a future and the old have a security. This is the darkest hour before the dawn. Talking is not enough, you must now WALK the WALK. We must UNITE like we have never done before and fight for what we believe in, which is a New Nigeria.

On the 22nd of May 2014 at 3pm, we will be marching to Aso Villa to ask our President some very important questions that we all have burning in our chests. If you are reading this, I am confident that we will walk side by side during our march to the President tomorrow, so please make sure you wear red.

In our series of letters from African journalists, Ghanaian writer Elizabeth Ohene argues that the public's response to the abduction of more than 200 schoolgirls in Nigeria on 14 April could be louder.

I cannot remember the last time I felt this sense of complete and total impotence.

Almost 300 school girls are abducted in Nigeria and it seems the only way to demonstrate the sense of outrage I feel is through the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls

I am not in any way trying to demean the efforts of the likes of Michelle Obama and Angelina Jolie on the celebrity front and the millions of other people who have taken to social media to publicise the plight of the girls. But it seems to me to be such a pathetically feeble protest.

A screen grab taken on 12 May 2014 from a video released by Nigerian Islamist extremist group Boko Haram shows its leader Abubakar Shekau

Here am I in Ghana's capital, Accra, in a country that sees itself as having a special relationship with Nigeria and I cannot begin to comprehend anything about the entire tragedy.

Elizabeth Ohene
I cannot understand how come there has not been a specific figure on the number of children who have been abducted by Boko Haram, the militant Islamist group; the figure has ranged from 129 to about 200 to 276 and I am thoroughly ashamed to have to say "about 300".

Am I to understand that there still exists in Nigeria such pristine dense forest in which you can hide 200 girls?

That surely must be the only good part of this entire sorry story. Thanks to illegal mining all our forests in Ghana are gone.

I cannot understand how it came about that four days after the girls were abducted, military spokesman Maj-Gen Chris Olukolade announced that most of the girls had been rescued. It is not enough that this statement was later retracted.

Military spokesmen simply do not make such statements without any basis.

I cannot understand why it took two weeks before President Goodluck Jonathan told his compatriots what the government was doing about the matter.

People stand on a bus past a bonfire set up on Ikorodu Road, Lagos
There was far more anger during fuel subsidy protests in Nigeria
I cannot understand how come it has been so difficult for the correct narrative to emerge; imagine my surprise to now discover that the school in Chibok from where the children were abducted is not a girls school as had been reported for weeks but a mixed school and the boys are not boarders.

Abduction timeline
Over here in Ghana the story has been treated in the media as "and now for the foreign news section". It has not made the lead story on any of our radio stations or newspapers.

Three weeks after the event and after the US and UK entered the attempt to find the girls, our President John Dramani Mahama, who happens to be the current chairman of the West African regional body, Ecowas, announced he had written to Mr Jonathan and is calling a meeting of regional heads of security.

I have thought about going to stand in front of the Nigerian High Commission here in Accra with a placard; I have thought about taking the plane to Abuja and joining in the demonstrations being staged by the parents but it all seems so pathetically feeble.

I recall the energy, the anger, the noise level that engulfed Nigeria when President Jonathan wanted to remove subsidies on petroleum products in 2012.

The entire country stood up as one, the people screamed, argued, blocked roads, nobody left the fight for a colleague to take on and no organization was expected to lead the fight, every Nigerian felt personally challenged and together they made the government retreat.

I cannot feel a similar sense of united anger and determination to overcome.

But my own position is particularly pathetic as I cannot even tweet hashtag #BringBackOurGirls, for I am not on Twitter and Facebook.

5  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Mali: Tuareg rebels 'defeat government army in Kidal' on: 22-05-2014 06:14 AM

Several government soldiers were killed or captured, a rebel spokesman said.

The government admitted its troops had retreated and the president called for an immediate ceasefire.

Fighting first broke out on Saturday when Mali's Prime Minister Moussa Mara visited Kidal to show support for government forces based there.

The renewed fighting threatens to end efforts to revive peace talks with the rebels, who belong to the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA).

The group is fighting for the independence of northern Mali.

Mali's Prime Minister Moussa Mara reviews troops upon his arrival at Kidal, northern Mali, on May 17, 2014,
The town of Kidal came under attack at the weekend during a visit by Prime Minister Moussa Mara
Control of Kidal was split between the MNLA and the government.

The BBC's Alex Duval Smith reports from the capital, Bamako, that both sides brought in reinforcements for Wednesday's battle.

Fighting began when the Malian army fired rockets on the governor's compound, which had been held by the MNLA since Saturday, she says.

The MNLA said they had defeated government forces after six hours of fighting, and their flag was flying over the military base in Kidal.

Eyewitnesses said parts of the town centre, including the market, had been destroyed in the fighting.

MNLA official Attaye Ag Mohamed said the situation in the town was calm on Wednesday night.

He also said MNLA fighters had taken several other towns in the north and our correspondent confirmed that the Malian army abandoned its positions in Menaka, Agelhok, Anefis and Tessalit.

The government admitted that its troops were forced to retreat from Kidal after problems with "intelligence"
The government acknowledged the fighting in a statement, saying Malian soldiers were forced "to retreat under heavy fire" after problems with "coordination and intelligence".

The statement also said the rebels were "supported by al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) terrorists and drug traffickers".

It said troops were being "reorganised" and that an investigation into the failed operation was under way.

"The president has called for an immediate ceasefire," government spokesman Mahamane Baby said on state television on Wednesday.

The government did not comment on casualty figures, but the MNLA said several fighters had been killed or wounded on both sides.

The group also claimed to have captured 27 government soldiers.

'Embarrassing defeat'
One western diplomat in the capital Bamako told Reuters that the poorly executed attack had "embarrassed" the government.

Gerard Araud, France's ambassador to the UN, said French forces had not been involved in the operation.

He said the Malian government "did not inform either Minusma [the UN peacekeeping force] or the French Serval".

France currently has around 1,600 soldiers in Mali as part of Operation Serval, and a spokesman said on Wednesday that the country would reinforce its presence with 100 more soldiers.

In 2012, a Tuareg rebellion in northern Mali triggered a military coup.

Civilian rule was re-established in 2013 following the French-led military intervention, but Islamist and separatist forces remain active in some areas.

Police: Kidnap victim 'brainwashed' Watch
A 25-year-old woman who went missing 10 years ago in California has told police she was forced to marry her captor and have his child.

The unnamed woman contacted police shortly after communicating with her sister on Facebook, officers said.

Isidro Garcia, 41, was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of kidnapping, rape and false imprisonment.

Police said in a statement he had been living with the girl's family at the time of her disappearance.

The abuse began in 2004, the statement said, when Mr Garcia was dating the victim's mother and residing with her and her daughters in Santa Ana, a city in Orange County.

BBC News, Bell Gardens, Los Angeles
The couple were known locally as Thomas and Laura, and were popular among neighbours for hosting lavish birthday parties for their three-year-old daughter. "They gave us toys," one little boy said through the fence of an apartment complex in this predominantly Hispanic area. Another neighbour, Maria, showed us photos of the family smiling at church for their daughter's christening. As news trucks clogged the street, people told much the same story, of a family that seemed happy but never got too close to people. They hosted parties but didn't have very close friends. Many just couldn't believe that "Laura" had been abducted a decade earlier. "They were a happy family," Xochitl Castillo said. "She was not a prisoner." Maribel Garcia wasn't as sure. They looked like a normal family, she said, but "Laura" was never allowed to chat for long. "He would give her that look and she would go back inside," she says. "Maybe she was afraid of him."

The police allege that Mr Garcia began segxwally assaulting the victim in June of that year, only four months after the girl arrived in the US from Mexico.

In August, he assaulted the victim's mother and drugged the teenager, driving her 26 miles north to Compton, Los Angeles, where she was locked in a garage, say police.

"Over the course of the following months and years, Mr Garcia repeatedly told the victim her family had given up looking for her, and if she tried to go back to them, the family would be deported," police said.

The two moved on several occasions to avoid police detection, and used different identities, the police statement said.

Mr Garcia frequently physically and segxwally assaulted the victim, it is alleged, and the two of them worked together at a night cleaning service.

"Even with the opportunity to escape, after years of physical and mental abuse, the victim saw no way out of her situation and lived a life with Garcia under sustained physical and mental abuse," police said.

At a press conference, Corporal Anthony Bertagna of the Santa Ana Police Department told reporters Mr Garcia had "brainwashed" her.

He said that in 2007, he forced the woman into a marriage, using documents he obtained in Mexico, and in 2012 the two had a child.

Anthony Bertagna
Bertagna of Santa Ana police said the victim's mother had reported her missing and police tried to find her
Recently, she contacted her sister on Facebook and was told that her mother had indeed been trying to find her, using a Spanish language newspaper and television station.

The communication with her sister made her realise she needed to leave, said Mr Bertagna, and on Monday she went to police to report that she was a victim of domestic abuse, and she told them she had been abducted.

The following day, police formally arrested Mr Garcia on suspicion of kidnapping for rape, lewd acts with a minor and false imprisonment. He has not been charged.

Neighbours in the street in Bell Gardens, Los Angeles, where the couple lived in recent years said on Wednesday evening they were stunned by the news, describing them as a happy couple who doted on their young daughter and even hosted parties.

The arrest comes a year after three women who went missing separately about a decade earlier were rescued from a house in Cleveland, Ohio.

Their captor, Ariel Castro, killed himself in prison in September 2013 at the beginning of a life sentence plus 1,000 years.

7  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / U.S. deploys 80 troops to Chad in Nigerian schoolgirls hunt on: 22-05-2014 06:05 AM

President Barack Obama says the U.S. has deployed 80 military personnel to Chad to help locate the more than 200 girls kidnapped in Nigeria.

Obama has sent a letter to House Speaker John Boehner and to the Senate notifying lawmakers about the steps underway to assist in the return of the abducted girls.

Obama says the service members will help with intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft for missions over northern Nigeria. He says the force will stay in Chad until its support is no longer necessary. Chad shares a portion of its western border with northeastern Nigeria.

The girls were kidnapped last month by an Islamic extremist group known as Boko Haram.

The Nigerian government and military's failure to curtail the 5-year-old Islamic uprising led by Boko Haram, highlighted by the April 15 abduction of the schoolgirls and lack of progress in rescuing them more than a month later, has caused national and international outrage.

U.S. team to face challenges in Nigeria
Both U.S. and U.K. intelligence and support teams have already been sent to Nigeria to assist in the search. France, China and Spain have also expressed interest in sending help.
"The team will be considering not just the recent incidents but also longer-term counter-terrorism solutions to prevent such attacks in the future and defeat Boko Haram," the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office said in a statement.

U.S. intelligence believes that many of the girls are being held in small groups and may have been taken into neighboring countries like Chad and Cameroon, CBS News correspondent Margaret Brennan reports. That's why the U.S. embassies in both of those countries are already coordinating with the U.S. team in Nigeria.

A Pentagon team of around 50 security experts who were already stationed in Nigeria have been assisting the government, Brennan reports. Soon, the FBI and the Justice Department are expected to join them.

There are restrictions on how much help the Pentagon can give to the Nigerian military because it is considered a human-rights violator.

"We have had concerns about the Nigerian military for quite some time," Rep. Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., said Wednesday after meeting one of the girls who escaped. "They should not deter us from cooperating to bring back those girls."

Boko Haram member: Kidnapped girls willingly converted to Islam
A member of Nigerian militant group Boko Haram tried to justify the targeting of children and warned of more kidnappings in an interview with CBS News earlier this week.
"You see the enemies among the children, it's acceptable to fire on all of them. You cannot differentiate the children," Saleh Abubakar told CBS News contributor Debora Patta.

Although very nervous at first, Abubakar was brazen enough to walk though heavy security and police cordons to speak to CBS News. This was in line with what a source connected to the group had said, that Boko Haram moves freely around the country and is integrated into many levels of society.

Abubakar said the abduction of the girls was in planning stages for three months.

He claimed to have seen the abducted girls three weeks ago and said they are fine. When asked about reports of the girls being sick and requiring medical attention, Abubakar denied them.

"No, it's lie. They don't have problem at all," he said.

He told CBS News nothing will happen to the girls as long as the government releases Boko Haram fighters being held in Nigerian jails.

8  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / B’Haram: Army begins mass recruitment on: 22-05-2014 05:50 AM

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen Olajide Laleye, said during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday that the exercise, which started with online registration for interested applicants would come to an end on June 21, 2014.

Laleye advised that only those who would be willing to fight in the North-East should volunteer for the recruitment.

The PUNCH had on April 28 exclusively reported that the Federal Government had given the Armed Forces and other security agencies the nod to embark on mass recruitment.

A highly placed military source, who confided in our correspondent, had said that   President Goodluck Jonathan issued the directive for more recruitment into the army in March after the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Kenneth Minimah, had briefed him about the operations of the army.

Our source said, “We have in the pipeline the plan to recruit. We are holding it because we want to upgrade our facilities.

“The presidential directive to us to recruit was given in March when the COAS briefed the President, but the exercise would start next month (May).”

On Wednesday, the Army spokesman said that some of the new recruits would be deployed in the North-East to take part in the ongoing campaign against the Boko Haram insurgents in the region.

He explained that the Army leadership was carrying out the “annual recruitment exercise” to replace some military personnel who had been killed in action.

He said the Army would also commission interested candidates through the Direct Short Service Commission and the Short Service Commission.

9  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / ‘MEND not responsible for P’Harcourt blast’ on: 22-05-2014 05:42 AM

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta is not responsible for the explosion that rocked the Port Harcourt Refinery Jetty in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State on Sunday, the President, Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, Mr. Achese Igwe, has said.

Igwe said over 50 persons were killed by the blast. It said majority of the victims were pipeline vandals that were caught up in the explosion while trying to steal petroleum products.

Media reports had stated that seven persons were killed by the explosion while several others sustained serious injuries, as MEND on Monday claimed responsibility for the blast.

The group’s spokesperson, Jomo Gbomo, had said the attack on the pipelines was part of its ongoing operation codenamed ‘Hurricane Exodus.’

But Igwe, while briefing journalists in Abuja on Thursday, said MEND’s claim was false and might be politically-motivated.

He said, “We read MEND’s claim to be responsible for the explosion that took place in a refinery jetty in Port Harcourt area and I want to make it clear that that information is false. We shouldn’t allow our political class to divert or create a diversionary attention as to what is happening.

“The claim of MEND being responsible for the explosion is 100 per cent false. MEND is not responsible, the area is calm and I wouldn’t want a situation where a false alarm will be raised to investors operating in the oil and gas sector.

“The explosion was as a result of the activities of pipeline vandals. They were at the point of scooping petroleum products when the pipeline that was laid in the water exploded, killing more than 50 persons. And it is not what the media is reporting that it is only seven that died; those that died there were more than 50.”

On how the union was able to figure out the cause of the explosion, Igwe said he visited the scene of the incident and had first hand information on what led to the blast.

He said, “The political class should not be seen as part of the security challenges that we are facing in this country. MEND is a faceless organisation and anybody can claim to be MEND.”

10  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / We’ll arrest Jos bombers –IG on: 22-05-2014 05:39 AM

Abubakar said the perpetrators would not go unpunished.

He stated this while addressing journalists on Wednesday at the Jos University Teaching Hospital after going round the casualties wards to ascertain the number of those injured following the blasts that left lots of persons died.

He said, “We have visited the injured in the   hospital and they are fast recovering.”

He described the bombing as unfortunate, adding that security agencies were on top of the situation and “we would do anything humanly possible to unmask those who committed this heinous act.”

Abubakar said no government would tolerate this kind of situation anywhere in the world and because of the concern of President Goodluck Jonathan over the plight of Plateau people, “He had directed me here to come and see what has happened and to see the level of damage and get back to him.”

He added that investigation had started and all the security agencies would partner to ensure that those behind the killings were arrested.

Abubakar appealed to the people of Plateau State to be patient and provide adequate information to the security agencies “so that we will be able to arrest those behind the evil act.”

11  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Afenifere urges FG to unmask perpetrators on: 22-05-2014 05:37 AM

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has condemned the blasts in Jos with a call on the Federal Government to move beyond condemnation of the attacks and unmask the masterminds. The group also commiserated with all families that had been bereaved by the latest terror attacks and prayed that God would grant them the fortitude to bear the losses “and our leaders the strength and courage to do the needful to arrest this dangerous careering to the precipice.”

A statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, said the sophistication of Boko Haram operations clearly indicated that its activities were fully backed by forces that could be traced.

The statement read, “The scope, spread, preciseness and timing of these ruthless and devastating attacks clearly suggest that this is a carefully planned and orchestrated war by sophisticated forces using the Boko Haram as a franchise. It is clear that this is a war for the soul of Nigeria and the coordinators do not care how many lives it takes for them to achieve their devilish objective.

“We cannot continue to bury the dead, sympathising with the wounded and waiting for where the next bomb will explode. We restate again that we do not want to accept that there are no security inklings as to those enabling this murderous outfit. Why is it so difficult to unmask them and wait for heavens to fall?

“How long shall we wait for them to harvest innocent souls in this atrocious war? We know how long it took America to get Osama Bin Ladin but it can’t be that difficult to move against the sponsors of terror so as to cut off their supplies.

“In a country where residents of the best cities find internet access very difficult, Shekau who is supposed to be in some forests loads 50 minutes video on YouTube at the drop of the hat. Are we being told there is no IP address for all his internet operations?”

While commending all the Bring BackTheGirls protests, campaigns aimed at mounting pressure for the release of abducted female students of Government Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State, Odumakin pointed out that the message should go from the symptoms to the disease.

“The abduction of the girls is just one of the many faces of this terror. An almost equal number of the Chibok girls must have been wiped out in Jos, do we now start “BringBackThe Dead” protests?. The campaign must be holistic and the overall goal should be ending this reign of terror that the Boko Haram terrorists are foisting on us. We must do this before they precipitate a war of everyone against everybody”, he stated.

12  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Reps mourn victims, Muslim women demand urgent action on: 22-05-2014 05:34 AM

The House of Representatives on Wednesday condemned Tuesday’s twin bombings in Jos, the Plateau State capital, which claimed over 100 lives.

The lawmakers’ reaction came as the Federation of Muslim Women Associations in Nigeria called on the National Assembly to do everything within its powers to end the killings and destruction of property in the country.

In a resolution in Abuja, the House said the attacks had again challenged security agencies in the country to redouble their anti-terrorism efforts.

A member from Plateau State, Mr. Bitrus Kaze, who moved a motion on the tragedy, simply described it as “very very saddening indeed.”

Kaze noted that though the blasts occurred in Jos, “all of us as Nigerians are affected; it is our loss.”

He added that relatives or associates of non-Jos residents could have been victims of the attacks.

Kaze appealed for intervention by the House to ensure that the victims were given relief by the National Emergency Management Agency.

He also solicited the assistance of the Plateau State Government to bankroll the medical expenses of the injured victims.

Lawmakers endorsed the motion in a unanimous voice vote.

In a separate resolution, the House asked security agencies to brief members monthly on the “effectiveness of the measures” put in place in   the three states under emergency rule.

The states are Borno, Yobe and Adamawa.

A member from Adamawa State, Aisha Ahmed, who moved the motion, recalled that in 2013 “over N300bn” was voted for security by the National Assembly.

But, she noted that little success appeared to have been recorded in terms of combating insurgency, in spite of the huge spending on security.

The Muslim women, who were led by Mrs. Farida Yusuf, met with Tambuwal at the National Assembly.

They expressed concern over what they described as the apparent state of “hopelessness” in the country, owing to insecurity.

Yusuf urged the House to continue to intervene, either by making laws or appropriating funds to fight insecurity.

Tambuwal assured the women that the House would continue to support the Federal Government to bring insurgency to an end.

He identified corruption as a major setback for most government decisions and actions.

The Speaker noted that the issue of accountability in governance had frequently caused conflicts between the House and the executive arm of government.

13  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Soldiers have Sighted the Abducted Girls in Boko Haram Camps on: 22-05-2014 05:29 AM

Better late than never. Nigeria’s special forces from the Army’s 7th Division have sighted and narrowed search for the over 200 abducted Chibok schoolgirls to three camps operated by the wicked Boko Haram sect north of Kukawa at the western corridors of the Lake Chad, senior military and government officials said.

That claim was supported by another senior commander from the Army’s 7th Division, the military formation created to deal with the insurgency in the Northeast. The 7th Division is headquartered in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

The breakthrough comes at a critical moment for the Nigerian military that has faced cutting criticism over its handling of the kidnapping of the girls more than a month ago.
“Our team first sighted the girls on April 26 and we have been following their movement with the terrorists ever since. That’s why we just shake our heads when people insinuate that the military is lethargic in the search for the girls,” one of the sources said.
“It has been a most difficult but heroic breakthrough,” a senior military official said in Abuja.

The abductions have sparked international outrage, with the United States, United Kingdom, France and Israel, providing intelligence and surveillance assistance.

According to Premium Times, Nigerian military officials coordinating the search and other officials in Abuja said Boko Haram insurgents split the girls into batches and held them at their camps in Madayi, Dogon Chuku and Meri, all around the Sector 3 operational division of the Nigerian military detachment confronting the group’s deadly campaign.

The location of the abducted girls – north east of Kukawa – opens a new insight into the logistic orientation of Boko Haram, responsible for thousands of deaths in a five-year long insurgency. President Goodluck Jonathan said the group has killed at least 12,000 people so far – that’s minus the hundreds killed in a car bomb on Tuesday in Jos and the about 10 murdered on Sunday in Kano in a suicide bombing.

Notwithstanding the sighting, the government is said not to be considering the use of force against the extremists, a choice informed by concerns for the safety of the students.

But with growing local and international pressure, a likely option may be for the authorities to enter into talks with the group, whose leader, Abubakar Shekau, in a May 12 video broadcast, called for dialogue and “prisoner” swap with the government.

19  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Explore all options to free girls, Tinubu tells FG on: 21-05-2014 04:08 AM

A former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, has said the Federal Government must explore all options to bring back the Chibok schoolgirls abducted by the terrorist Boko Haram sect.

Tinubu spoke on the sidelines of the National Executive Council meeting of the All Progressives Congress, in Abuja, on Tuesday.

He explained that government owes Nigerians a duty to protect their lives and property in a transparent manner.

Tinubu said, “We want them (girls) alive. It is a national tragedy and we have said that several times. All options must be examined to bring them quickly alive out of the trauma, it is a national tragedy.”

On foreign intervention in the search of the missing girls, he said, “I don’t know what it has fetched us, how effective it has been. What we want is security for this nation in a transparent manner to protect lives and property of all citizens .

“Whether marshal law or emergency rule what has it produced till date? We have had a second round of emergencies. Is it ceremonial? What have we achieved with previous declarations of the state emergency?

“We just want it in the gazette, the result justifies the means that it is not the state of emergency, it is the action, commitment, and effort to achieve the goal.

“First the unity, every member of the Armed Forces is involved. So what is an emergency about is what I have not been really able to dissect and understand is that these emergencies, have they effectively delivered the goals? They have not.”

The former governor also said it would be very good “if we can utilise the presence of foreign armed forces to enhance the capacity of our military.”

He added, “It (foreign support) is welcomed . It is very good if we utilise it effectively to enhance the capacity of our armed forces, to equally learn new things and improve the security around our various institutions particularly the schools.”

20  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Jonathan, Tinubu storm Ekiti, police deploy bomb experts on: 21-05-2014 04:07 AM

President Goodluck Jonathan as well as top opposition politicians in the All Progressives Congress will storm Ekiti State on Wednesday (today) and Thursday to campaign for votes in the state governorship election billed for June 21.

While the President, according to the spokesperson for the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, Pastor Kola Oluwawole, will be in town on Thursday for the ‘Presidential Flag Off’ of the PDP candidate, Ayo Fayose’s campaign, APC chieftains including ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar; APC National Leader, Bola Tinubu, and the party’s National Chairman, Bisi Akande, will on Wednesday hand the party’s flag to its candidate, Kayode Fayemi.

Fayemi is seeking a second term while Fayose is campaigning to return to the seat he vacated in 2006.

The police commissioner in the state, Mr. Felix Uyanna, told newsmen in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday, that he had deployed his men and officers to strategic locations to forestall any breakdown of law and order.

The two rallies would hold at the popular Oluyemi Kayode Stadium in Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

Uyanna, who spoke through the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Victor Babayemi added that his men had also commenced a stop-and-search operation on all vehicles.

He said, “The command has enough manpower to ensure that the rallies are held under a peaceful atmosphere. Once the protection of lives and property is our utmost duty, we are going to do all within our powers to curb any crisis that could lead to loss of lives.

“We have activated all the police units to be able to deal with any situation because we are not unaware of the personalities that will visit the state within the next two days. Our men from the Explosive and Ordinance Department had already commenced operation at the venue of the two rallies. They are combing everywhere as we speak.

“We are not going to limit our operations to this; we are also going to give adequate protection to all the hotels where some of these personalities will be staying. So, we are on top of the situation and we are monitoring situations very carefully.”

The police boss urged residents to go about their lawful business and to steer clear of trouble.

Meanwhile, the PDP has alleged that the APC had concluded plans to destabilise Jonathan’s visit.

In a statement made available to journalists in Ado-Ekiti, Oluwawole alleged that Fayemi had mobilised thugs and members of his party to foment trouble in Ado Ekiti metropolis to create an impression that “the President is not welcomed in the state”.
