3  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Nigeria’s music industry making global impact, says Olu Maintain on: 22-05-2014 11:47 PM
Lagos -  Musician Olumide Adegbolu, popularly known as Olu Maintain, said on Tuesday that the country’s music industry was making global impact in spite of the challenges facing it.

The yahooze crooner said in Lagos that the music industry was presently in an evolutionary state.

“The quality of material is very encouraging. There’s been a lot of growth, and there’s been considerable, measurable development as well.

“We’re very far from where we started from and we still have a lot to do. It has been a steady growth process. It looks promising and it can only get better.

“If you had looked at it five years back and compared it to the present, you would see some undeniable improvement.

“Nigeria music has instantly become a factor worldwide, not just because of the support given, but most especially the population and purchasing power of Nigerians, “he said.

He said that the sky was the limit of music production in the country adding that there was massive music culture evolving across the nation.

“The revolution is so big that in the next five years people worldwide will be heard singing songs with Nigerian lyrics,“ he said. (NAN)

4  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Direct your protest to Chibok girls abductors -Jonathan on: 22-05-2014 11:40 PM
President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday urged those who have been protesting the abduction of more than 200 schoolgirls in Chibok, Borno State to henceforth direct their protests to terrorists and not the government.

He also urged them to learn from citizens of other countries who do not blame their governments for any terrorist acts in their nations.

The president also admitted publicly for the first time that his administration was currently consulting with some stakeholders with a view to exploring what he called alternative methods of resolving the present crisis.

Jonathan made the disclosure in speech delivered on his behalf by the Minister of State, Federal Capital Territory, Olajumoke Akinjide, to a team of #BringBackOurGirls campaigners led by a former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili.

The protesters who earlier planned to take their protest to the Presidential Villa where they wanted Jonathan to address them were restricted to the Federal Secretariat within the Three Arms Zone, a few metres away from the Villa gate by security agencies.

Those who joined Akinjide in the delegation that represented Jonathan at the rally included the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Pius Anyim; Minister of FCT, Bala Mohammed; Minister of Information, Labaran Maku; Minister of Women Affairs, Zaynab Maina; and Minister of Environment, Lawrencia Laraba.

Others were the Special Adviser to the President on Ethics and Values, Sarah Jubiril; Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati and Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, among others.

Jonathan, in the speech, made spirited efforts to convince the protesters that contrary to their belief, his administration was working hard in conjunction with the international community to rescue the abducted girls and end terrorism.

He said it was wrong and unfair to say that there was a slow response to the abduction.

He said, “It is wrong and most unfair to suggest that there was a slow reaction to this kidnapping. As Commander-in-Chief, Mr. President meets with the security chiefs almost daily and he is on constant consultation with regional and global partners on this terrorists’ threat.

“That is why I want to appeal to your group and to others through this medium that it is important that genuine patriotic zeal is matched with the realistic understanding of the situation in expressing concern and sentiment on this matter and other matters of terrorism.

“As early as January 23, 2013, Mr. President at Davos, Switzerland asked the world for help in tackling terrorism. He later met with President Obama during the United Nations General Assembly meeting in September 2013 where he also requested for the support of the United States of America.

“Government believes that we must all come together to fight terrorism and that protest should be directed at the terrorists who have abducted our innocent daughters and deprive them of a place at the fountain of freedom in our country.

“Our security forces are among the best trained in Africa, they are making so much sacrifices in the fight against terror. As we sleep daily, they are on the field confronting the enemy. They need our support, not attack and discouragement. They are also losing their lives.

“When terrorists see Nigerians turn on each other in blame, it gives them a huge moral boost. We must never lose sight of the fact that the terrorists are the real enemies.”

Jonathan warned the protesters and Nigerians against politicising the anti-terrorism campaign, saying nationals of other countries do not behave that way.

“We must be careful not to politicise the campaign against terrorism. When a bomb goes off in Kabul, Afghanistan, the people of Afghanistan do not blame the government, they blame the terrorists.

“When a bomb goes off in Baghdad, Iraq, the people of Iraq do not blame the government, they blame the terrorists.

“When a bomb goes off in Islamabad, Pakistan, the people of Pakistan do not blame the government, they blame the terrorists.

“When a bomb goes off in Nigeria, we must all unite to fight the terrorists. This is the task of this generation.

“Our daughters must be freed to come home to their parents and loved ones. Our daughters must be freed so that they can return to schools to receive their education.

“Our daughters must be freed so that they can return home to be with their friends and play like all children their age do.

“All Nigerians must unite against terror, whether we be male or female, old or young, North or South, irrespective of political or religious affiliation. This is our fight, we must unite. The Federal Government is united with the people of Nigeria in this fight,” he added.

The President reeled out the various steps his administration had taken to rescue the abducted girls.

These, according to him included military and diplomatic efforts.

Beyond that, he said he had started consultation for alternative methods of resolving the impasse.

He added, “Government has mobilised all resources, military and diplomatic, in the search for our girls who have suffered so much trauma in captivity by agents of terror.

“From the very first day this kidnapping occurred, the Federal Government took action, directing our security services to go after the abductors.

“The search for our daughters has now assumed regional and global proportions and our nation has received strong supports from our neighbouring countries and the international community, including the United States, China, Africa, the United Kingdom and the entire African continent.

“The security forces have also reached out to the Borno State Government and community members for support and collaboration to bring back our innocent daughters. So far, the campaign to bring our daughters back home is on and is receiving global support.

“Nigeria in collaboration with Niger, Chad, Cameroon and Benin Republic have all agreed to establish a single centre for sharing intelligence on the activities of terrorists across our national boundary.

“Apart from those efforts on the public space, we have initiated consultations with so many stakeholders to explore alternative methods of resolving this crisis.”

The President urged civil society groups to use their influence to encourage Nigerians to provide useful information to the security services, using the emergency number 112, saying citizens must protect citizens if their civilisation is to endure.

He however appreciated the support and efforts of the group and others across the worldwide against the kidnap and senseless mayhem.

He described the act as very painful, adding that the world is under the grip of terrorism.
5  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Students Of The University Of Abuja On Thursday Staged A Protest on: 22-05-2014 11:32 PM
Students of the University of Abuja on Thursday staged a protest, accusing the University’s Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, of negligence, which allegedly caused the death of one Chiwendu Okafor.

Okafor was a 200-level Political Science student of the university.

Some of the students, who spoke during the protest, said the deceased was found in his hostel secreting foams from his mouth and was rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

A course mate of the deceased, who pleaded anonymity while speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria, said the deceased was brought to the hospital alive, but his condition worsened after medical help was allegedly delayed.

He said Okafor drank a substance called sniper (poison) and started bringing out foams from his mouth.

The student alleged that the deceased bought the sniper, saying he would use it to kill mosquitoes but eventually used it on himself.

“Okafor was a lively person and well known in the Political Science Department; why he took the poison we cannot tell,’’ he said.

The Chief Medical Director, University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Dr Peter Alabi, told NAN that Okafor was brought to the hospital dead.

He said the doctor, who was on duty at the casualty on May 21, confirmed him dead and referred his remains to be kept in the mortuary.

Alabi said the medical record of Okafor described him as “a lifeless young man, an undergraduate, brought to the hospital in a car.”

“They did not bring him down from the car with secretion from his mouth,’’ he said.

Alabi said there was no issue of negligence on the part of the hospital.

He said the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Health, had a policy that anybody brought to the casualty should be given all attention.

The CMD said the policy also required that even if it was obvious that the doctors would need a police report, the patient must first be attended to.

6  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / INEC begins distribution of permanent voter cards Friday on: 22-05-2014 11:31 PM

Ahead of the 2015 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission will begin the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards in 10 states on Friday.

The commission has however called on every registered voter in the 10 states under Phase One to visit the polling unit, where they previously registered in order to ascertain their registration status.

A statement on Thursday in Abuja by the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC chairman, Mr. Kayode Idowu, said, the distribution of PVCs would end on Sunday in Taraba, Gombe, Zamfara, Kebbi, Benue, Kogi, Abia, Enugu, Akwa-Ibom and Bayelsa states.

He said, “Persons whose data have been appropriately captured will be handed their PVCs at the polling units in accordance with set procedures. Those with defective data, for whom PVCs have not been produced, will have the opportunity to re-register during the Continuous Voter Registration that holds from Wednesday, May 28, 2014, to Sunday, June 1, 2014.

“There will be a display of the valid Register of Voters at the polling units where the PVCs will be distributed. It is, thus, important for every voter to visit his/her polling unit from Friday, May 23 to Sunday, May 25, 2014, to ascertain his/her registration status; contrary to suggestions that persons in so-called ‘zero polling units’ need not show up.”

According to him, the CVR is for “persons who turned 18 years after the last registration; persons who were 18 years at the time but did not present themselves for registration; and persons whose data were not adequately captured previously and for whom PVCs have not been produced.”

It added, “For avoidance of doubt, the exercise is not for everyone, including people wishing to transfer their registration data from where they previously registered. INEC particularly urges persons in category (iii) above to be calm and re-present themselves for registration during the CVR, to have their status regularised.”

7  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Thailand: Curfew imposed after military takeover on: 22-05-2014 11:19 PM

The Thai military has taken control of the government in a coup, the country’s military chief announced in a national address Thursday.

Military officials also imposed a curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. local time (11 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET), authorities said in a televised address.

The developments are the latest in a chain of failed attempts to defuse tensions that have simmered since November. The discord has its roots in politics, and led both pro- and anti-government factions to fight over the country’s leadership.

The military on Tuesday imposed martial law in an attempt to end the instability, but said it was not a coup. Now, it has taken power outright.

The move came after rival factions were unable to come up with a suitable agreement to govern, the military chief said.

8  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / 300 dead in DRC attacks blamed on 'prophet' on: 22-05-2014 11:13 PM

Kinshasa - More than 300 people, mostly civilians, were killed in attacks blamed on a self-proclaimed "prophet" in the Democratic Republic of Congo in December, the Paris-based International Federation for Human Rights said on Thursday.

The Congolese government has previously denied that any citizens were killed in the violence on 30 December, which it blames on pastor and former presidential candidate Joseph Mukungubila Mutombo, who is known by his followers as "the Eternal Prophet".

"Some 250" civilians and six soldiers died in the Katanga province in the south-east of the country, and another 71 civilians were killed in Kinshasa, said Sylvain Lumu, general-secretary of the League of Electors, a local group who helped compile the report.

"The toll is still provisional because there were people, according to some witnesses... who were thrown in the Katanga river. There are [also] people that are in mass graves," he said.

The government has previously denied there were any civilian deaths in the coordinated attacks across several cities on 30 December.

It put the toll at "103 dead, including 95 terrorists and eight soldiers".

The attacks started with armed youths believed to be loyal to Mukungubila storming the state television station, the international airport and the military headquarters.

As well as the capital, attacks took place in Lubumbashi and Kolwezi in the Katanga region of the southeast, and Kindu in the eastern region of Maniema.

Interpol arrest warrant

Mukungubila, who challenged President Joseph Kabila in 2006 elections, is now in exile in South Africa.

In an open letter dated 5 December, Mukungubila expressed bitterness at the way the country was being run. He showed his hate for neighbouring Rwanda, which once invaded the DR Congo and is accused by the United Nations of backing rebels, and charged Kabila was too close to Rwanda.

Mukungubila and Kabila are both from the resource-rich southeastern state of Katanga, which the president was visiting at the time of the attacks.

On 15 May, South Africa detained Mukungubila for several hours on a Interpol arrest warrant "following a complaint by the Congolese government", the pastor's lawyer told AFP.

He is due to appear before a court in South Africa accused of murder and several other charges on 15 July.

"We don't have the impression that the attackers had any other objective - in such small numbers, with such weak weaponry - but to seek... to spread panic and terror on the eve of the New Year's festivities," government spokesperson Lambert Mende said at the time.

9  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / I was raped by Boko Haram, says Borno girl on: 22-05-2014 11:11 PM

A teenage girl has described how she was raped by Boko Haram extremists when the group attacked her home town of Maiduguri in Borno state.

In an exclusive interview with eNCA, the 19-year-old, whose real name could not be revealed to protect her identity, said her scarf was used to tie her hands and mouth before one of the group members raped her.

Her sister narrowly escaped the same fate.

The revelation of her ordeal comes as more than 200schoolgirls remain missing a month after they were abducted from their school in Chiboko.

The teenager's father apparently prevented her from writing her final examinations at the same school two months ago as he feared for her safety.

Her friends and classmates are part of the abducted girls and as she said during the interview: "I can imagine how they are suffering without anyone helping." She added that she was disappointed by the manner in which government had handled the situation.

10  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Malawi president alleges vote fraud on: 22-05-2014 11:08 PM

Blantyre - Malawi's president is demanding a vote recount after alleging a national election this week was marred by rigging, though the election commission has dismissed the allegation.

President Joyce Banda said on Thursday that irregularities included a failure to inspect voter registers at some polling centres, efforts to prevent election monitoring and the hacking of the electronic counting system in the impoverished African country.

The country's election commission says the vote was fair and that it will have a "clear picture" of the outcome in the next few days.

Banda faced a field of 12 candidates in Tuesday's elections, which were troubled by scattered unrest. Banda was vice president and came to power in 2012 following the death of President Bingu wa Mutharika.

Mutharika's brother, Peter, was a prominent challenger to Banda.
