1  Forum / The Buzz Central / 'Marriage and kids have not slowed me down' - Dakore Akande on: 30-05-2014 12:49 PM

A few months after giving birth to her second child, actress Dakore Egbuson has returned to acting. She's one of the cast of the play, Hear Word, happening this May. Speaking about how easy it is for her to return to work despite having two young children at home, Dakore said she has a great support system who help her with the kids and that marriage and motherhood hasn't slowed her down
"My mom is with my kids at home. My nanny is also at home. By the Grace of God, I have a great support system. My husband is very understanding. They believe in what I am doing and encourage me to forge ahead, so I can give my all to my job. With balancing marriage, motherhood and work, I prioritize. The home first. And when my husband realizes I am deviating from my duty, I have to push myself back. Family first and once family has been taken care of, I can then fly.
Yes, marriage slows people down if you allow it. I believe a woman can have it all but not at the same time. You have to do things one at a time. Marriage will slow you down but you shouldn't let it stop you" Dakore pictured above with her mum and 2 daughters.

2  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Presidential fact-finding committee visit Chibok on: 30-05-2014 12:47 PM

Members of the presidential fact-finding committee on the abducted Chibok school girls yesterday May 29th paid a visit to Chibok community. In a statement signed by the committee spokesman, Kingsley Osadolor, the committee met with some officials of the Borno state government, including the Borno State Commissioner for Education, Musa Kubo, Chairman of Chibok Local Government, Bana Lawan, five district heads of the surrounding communities, Chairman of the Parent Teachers Association of the Government Girls Secondary School Chibok, the principal, parents of the abducted girls and some of the girls who escaped were all present at the meeting.
Read part of the statement after the cut...where's the pic of them there though?
"Members of the committee visited the burnt-out structures of Government Secondary School, where the girls were abducted. The receiving party conducted members of the committee round the grounds of the school. The principal, vice principals, matrons of the hostels, as well as security guards and cooks were earlier debriefed by the committee in Maiduguri. The committee later held an interactive session with the Chibok communities on the school premises. At the meeting, Chairman of the Fact-finding Committee, Brig.-Gen. Ibrahim Sabo (retd.), who spoke with misty eyes, said the committee came, first, to sympathise with the parents and other community members over the havoc of the insurgents. He assured the people of President Goodluck Jonathan’s concern about the fate of the abducted students, saying that the President was having sleepless nights. As we gather here today to see you wailing, by the grace of God, we will also gather here to dance and rejoice with you when the girls regain their freedom" it read
The spokesperson of the committee said the people were elated to see them and asked that their message of hope and belief that the girls would be found be delivered to the President. He said one of the fathers whose 2 daughters are still in Boko haram captivity, Rev. Enoch Mark asked that people should stop politicizing the missing Chibok girls and also stated that the abduction was not a religious thing as both religions were affected by the abduction.

4  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Passengers panic as Emirates slashes Dubai-bound flights on: 30-05-2014 09:10 AM

Nigerian passengers heading for Dubai have had to make alternative arrangements to arrive at their destination by making connecting flights through Abu Dhabi and other destinations in the Middle East following a recent announcement that Emirates Airlines had cancelled one of its twice-daily flights to Dubai.

Emirates Airlines originally operated one flight per day from Nigeria to Dubai, but increased the frequency to two in response to an upsurge in passenger number.

Its management explained some days ago that the reduction of scheduled flights was to allow for the upgrade of the runway of its Dubai International Airport terminal from May 1 till July 20, 2014.

There has been anxiety about how the Nigerian passengers will cope with the reduction of the flights, but findings by our correspondent revealed that the move had had little effect on passenger traffic from the country.

A businessman, who shuttles between Nigeria and Dubai, Mr. Timothy Adura, said the reduction of daily flights made little difference to his schedule.

“Actually, I heard the announcement sometime last week, but it hasn’t changed anything much as far as I am concerned. As I have told you, I am a businessman, and I try to cut cost as much as possible; so, I actually make use of connecting flights through Abu Dhabi, and they are usually much cheaper, I can tell you that.

“The interesting thing is that I know a lot of people like me, who prefer to fly other airlines that connect Dubai through Abu Dhabi, and if one books for a flight much earlier, like I usually do, one can fly really cheap; so the Emirates thing doesn’t affect me, I actually use Etihad or Air Jordanian at times.”

The Managing Director, Gadeshire Travel and Tours Limited, Mr. Gbenga Adebayo, said the reduction of flights by Emirates could have posed some problems in the peak of the summer period.

He added that since the runway repairs were billed to be completed before the end of July, the reduction in flight would not have much effect.

Adebayo said, “I think the issue is mainly about rescheduling. Those who had earlier planned to go on the Emirates’ afternoon flight will just have to reschedule to an evening flight; it is not a big deal. And since they claim that the repairs will be completed by July 20, it is not an issue.

“I can also tell you that prices to that destination have not increased as a result of the reduction; so, it really doesn’t change much.”

The Publicity Secretary, National Association of Nigerian Travel Agents, Mrs. Ngozi Ngoka, said, “I can tell you that there has not been any price increment on the route, and this is because there is a lot of competition on that route. Nigerians going to Dubai always look out for the cheapest tickets and they are comfortable going with connecting flights through Abu Dhabi because the waiting period is very short.

“A lot of airlines such as Qatar Airways, Air Jordanian, Etihad Air, Kenya Airways and Ethiopian Airlines ply that route; so, competition is very healthy there, which will make any unnecessary price increase difficult.”

5  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Presidential Committee Finally Makes First Visit to Chibok on: 30-05-2014 09:01 AM

The presidential fact-finding committee on the abduction of over 250 female students from their hostel at Government Secondary School Chibok on April 14, finally visited the town yesterday, a week after suspending the trip. The trip was the first by senior civilian officials since the abduction seven weeks ago.

The chairman of the presidential committee, Ibrahim Sabo, who led a three man entourage to Chibok Thursday, said the panel was in the town to sympathise with the parents and to assure them that even though his team was received amidst wailing by some of mothers of the abducted girls, the parents will rejoice soon.
“I am sure we will be here rejoicing with you when the girls regain their freedom,” he said.

Mr. Sabo also informed the gathering which assembled at the GSS Chibok, where the girls were taken captives that President Jonathan was considering all options available to have the girls freed.
Speaking on behalf of the parents, Mark Enoch, pleaded with the government to do everything within its powers to rescue the girls.
“Since the Chief of Defence Staff had announced to the whole world that the Army knows where our daughters are kept, all we can beg them is to try and rescue them alive,” Mr. Mark whose two daughters are among the abducted girls said.

PREMIUM TIMES’ Sani Tukur, who is in Chibok, said over 100 parents, as well as the management of the school, gathered as early as 9 a.m. outside the town’s motor park to receive the government team. The crowd later moved to the secondary school. There was heavy security presence in and around Chibok with some of the military van bearing the United Nations number plates.

The Ibrahim Sabo-led committee shelved its earlier plan last week to visit Chibok despite being in Maiduguri for almost a week. The reschedule was because “the security people said they could not guarantee their security,” one source said. However, Mr. Sabo denied that claim.

6  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / EXPOSED: PDP Chairman Adamu Muazu Is A Pathological Liar on: 30-05-2014 08:47 AM

Secretary to the Borno State Government, SSG, Ambassador Baba Ahmed Jidda, has described the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Adamu Muazu, as a pathological liar, for telling Nigerians that both the minister of State for education and WAEC had written to the governor not to allow exams go on in Chibok, but that the governor insisted.
"I did not know Muazu a former Governor in the northeast that is suffering this crisis, to be a pathological liar. I don't know if any of you watched the Channels Television today, (Thursday), they showed Muazu telling lies for me to react, it was on air, the world saw him misleading the world. I took the letters he is misquoting with me and the panellists all read it. There was no where any of the letters asked us not to conduct exams in Chibok. This is the letter, all of you should look at it. Muazu didn't read the letter before he went to the media to speak out of outright ignorance and falsehood. This is very unfortunate.
"In any case, the minister does not even have the locus standi to direct the governor on such matters. We provided logistics as requested by WAEC. We wrote the Police too, to provide security on daily basis, as per the request from WAEC to all the centers through out the duration of the exams as per WAEC request.
"But let me reiterate here that at no time did we receive any letter either from the police, WAEC or even the minister, advising us not to hold the exams in Chibok. At any rate, as at the time of the exams, Chibok was considered as one of the safest locations in the State.

8  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Is Changing #BringBackOurGirls to #ReleaseOurGirls Part of the Transformation Ag on: 30-05-2014 08:23 AM

It means a lot to Nigeria’s president that the world stops protesting and requiring it of him and the security service to rescue over 200 girls abducted since mid April this year. President Goodluck Jonathan appears more and more everyday to simply wish this could just go away and everyone forget these poor girls in Sambisa forest; after all, ‘they are not the first to have been kidnapped and forgotten with Boko Haram and they are not likely to be the last during his administration, so why all the hullabaloo?’

To this end, the government of Nigeria has invested billions; it can be imagined, in an eleventh hour campaign to transform the face of the Nigerian protest. Nigeria’s president has been advised to invest in attempting to use #ReleaseOurGirls to replace #BringBackOurGirls, which has been perhaps the most viral and globally participated hashtag protest of all times, with public figures including Michelle Obama, the United States president’s wife prominently and passionately getting publicly involved.
Why is the president of Nigeria being advised and investing so much in fighting to transform #BringBackOurGirls to #ReleaseOurGirls. Is there so much in a ‘mere’ name and a hashtag?

A week after the abduction, Nigeria’s president constituted a Chibok committee to look into the case of the abducted girls. What the role of this committee is in this security matter is left to speculation. Almost two months after the abduction, the committee is yet to visit Chibok. Is it this committee that advised the rebranding of the global #BringBackOurGirls campaign to #Release Our Girls Boko Haram? If so, then what is the thinking of this committee and how does this rebranding assist the plight of the missing girls?

#BringBackOurGirls puts pressure on the Nigerian and international security departments to ramp up efforts and harness all equipment and skills at their disposal, to rescue the abductees. #Release Our Girls however reads as a position of surrender and resignation. #Release Our Girls is a message for one ear and one ear alone, that of the terrorists. When a nation hires miscreants to protest and cry for terrorists to have mercy; what image does this portray? A nation on its knees?

If the entire nation joined the #ReleaseOurGirls campaign, in what way will this plea affect Boko Haram or the desperate predicament of our abducted girls? Has a begging nation ever touched a terrorist’s heart? If not so then why would the Chibok committee and all other advisers of the Nigerian president further humiliate him and his plight and the plight of the nation as a whole with this meaningless counter-campaign?

Are Nigeria’s president’s advisers not aware that the world is watching and noticed how his government initially challenged and denied the abduction, then lied, as the Economist candidly put it, that Nigeria’s security agents had rescued all but eight girls; and when this was humiliatingly exposed, now employ all tactics of intimidation, harassment, diversion and terrorist begging as avoidance strategies in the face of embarrassing terror and terror response?

#ReleaseOurGirls is really a reason for concern. Is there any sensible reason why money that could be used to aid the hunt for the missing girls and to console and rehabilitate the people of Chibok is being wasted in sponsoring a humiliating, violent counter campaign?

The entire world is watching. Seriously, the obvious #ReleaseOurGirls distraction is not a good look, Goodluck.

11  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Best Way To Make Your Kiss A Memorable One on: 30-05-2014 08:12 AM

I kissed a guy once…and I hated it.

This was so many years ago. I was just a teenager then and this guy told me he wanted to kiss me. So I closed my eyes and waited for the Hollywood type of kiss…

But…

That never happened.

First, he forced my lips open. Shoved his tongue in. Spread wide my whole mouth. And started delivering saliva down my throat. On top of everything, he was grabbing my head like the kiss was an injunction from God.

Lawd! That was the worst kiss ever! And I told myself that I was never ever ever going near a bad kisser again! The moment I got close to a guy and he didn’t know how to do a simple, ‘part open the lips slightly’ to kiss, I was gone.

Everyone knows kisses are important in a romantic relationship. You cannot not know how to kiss. It is against humanity to be a bad kisser. I am even certain if you dig through time, you’ll find a law from the middle ages that chopped off people’s tongues if they kissed badly.

Every day, people fall in love and no doubt they will think of that first kiss and how it’s all going to go. The people who will think of this more are women. Guys will not mull over the issue much; they tend not to worry about such stuff – that is if they’re good.

But what if they’re not? What if after their last kissing encounter they were told that they were bad? What if they don’t even know how bad they are? Like in my case, I din’t tell the guy; I just went my way and pitied the next girl he would fill with saliva.

So the big question is: how do you know you’re a good kisser if you’re not told? How do you get to that point where you know that you’re damn good?

It’s all about technique. No one is born a natural kisser, male or female. You learn as you kiss and the good thing is that you don’t have to be a pro to kiss well.

Start with pecks. If you’re not sure how to go, keep your lips close and peck your partner, not on the lips directly but on the sides of the lips. Then you can move to the upper lip and lower lip. Pecking eases whatever apprehension you have and gives you time to breathe before the real deal. Remember not to turn your mouth into a beak while doing this.
Go soft. You can now part open your lips a little and kiss your partner’s upper or lower lip as you did earlier. You can do this dry. He or she mustn’t feel your saliva yet. Exhale as you kiss so that your breath blows gently over your partner’s lips. The hot air will make him or her want more of you.
Get wet. At this point, it is okay for you to let your partner taste you a  little. Put your lips in-between theirs and kiss gently. Kiss up, kiss down, move to the side, tug the lips a little but don’t pull roughly. Tease a little with your tongue as well. Back off slightly, look into the eyes of whom you’re kissing and then you can go in again – for something deeper.
THE FRENCH KISS

Lick the lips. Now, it’s all about lips, tongue and saliva. No more shame here. Go all the way but don’t get too steamy too fast. Lick your partner’s lips. Work your tongue on them in a ticklish manner, both on the outer and inner parts.
Suck the lips. Go deeper. Suck those lips but softly. Don’t pull them into your mouth like you want to swallow or you could cause injuries. Nibble and tickle with your teeth as you do so.
Go all the way. Now you have your partner’s lips wanting yours. By now, they would have kissed back equally and shown signs of wanting more, by trying to push in their tongue. Don’t hold back now; it is time to ignite the fire by claiming those lips completely.
The truth about French-kissing is that no one can teach you completely how to go about it. If you follow the above teasing and introductory stages, the rest comes naturally. It is a connection between two people and it differs with each couple, depending on chemistry, lips structure, passion and reason for the kiss. You might be kissing because sex is on the agenda, or just teasing each other or just for plain attraction or love. All of that contribute to how intense the kiss should go and the manner in which it occurs. Still, you need to have certain things at the back of your mind; trick and tips that can help you.

Use your hands. If you’re a guy, put your hand behind her neck and caress her gently as you kiss; run your fingers through her hair (if her weave is not in the way); hold her waist alternatively and squeeze gently with each movement of your lips; or you could hold her face (females like this better); play with her earlobes, lift her chin up with a finger and look into her eyes while delivering short kisses. Ladies, the nape of a guy’s neck is sensitive as are his earlobes. Gentle strokes should be applied. If you have long fingernails, use them to tickle and tease; you could also rest your hands on his chest at the initial stages until theings gets steamy.
Control your saliva. If you don’t spit when you talk, I don’t see why you should deliver copious amounts of saliva to your partner when kissing them. Swallow your spit as you kiss. Chances are you’re swallowing your partner’s juices as well but it’s no issue; you’re already kissing them.
Avoid slobbering the face with saliva. Saliva is for mouths, not the face. Unless the person you’re kissing tells you they like it, don’t do it. Saliva on the face leaves a not so nice smell and turns a lot of females off. I don’t know about guys but generally, stick to the lips and other erogenous zones.
Don’t clash teeth. I once heard a funny story told by a chick who said a guy she kissed kept hitting her teeth with his that she was sure if anyone heard them they would think swords were clashing. Please don’t do that. Teeth are for nibbling alone.
Don’t open your mouth too wide too quickly. Some people hear of French kiss and they automatically think it’s all about opening wide their mouths and covering it over another person’s. No, don’t do that. Let it widen as you kiss.
Listen to your partner’s responses. He or she may want to go slow but you are going fast. Respond to them. If they are not doing much, then you can lead.
And lastly, talk about the kiss before it happens. If it’s your first time together and it isn’t one of those spontaneous moments, then you can actually talk about the kiss in a manner your partner would not be offended. Go like, “I love your lips and I want to kiss you now but I don’t know if you’d want to.” If they give you the go ahead, then add, “How would you want me to kiss you? Like this…?” And then you can start with a small peck or an introductory kiss. Or alternatively, talk about your worst kissing experience and ask about theirs. That way you know what they like or don’t like. With time, you guys know what works best for you and you’ll kiss effortlessly.
Hope this helps someone today.

12  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Many Parents Make Bad Role Models on: 30-05-2014 08:10 AM

When I first thought of writing this post, I wanted desperately to pour out all the anger I was feeling for something that happened to me yesterday. I wanted to write and write till my hand was aching me but when I started, something occurred to me that I was obviously not the only one going through this ish. So many people out there have parents who are real pains in their asses and it is actually a terrible thing when we think about it. Maybe I should start by sharing what happened to me yesterday with you guys. I’m not afraid of anybody who will come here and judge me. It is actually not going to bug me one bit because the fact that I can write about it doesn’t mean I want to condemn anybody but to help so many people out there. After all, we are all going to be parents one day.

About two years ago, I was going through a whole lot of issues that was making me depressed and was afraid to share with anyone. I drew into my shell because I saw myself as being vulnerable and susceptible to being betrayed and hurt. I stopped talking with my best friend, I totally alienated myself from a lot of people who I’m sure could have helped me through that phase. I was angry and sad and could not trust anybody anymore. The best way to deal with everything going on with me was partying excessively, drinking, smoking and skipping school. That went on for almost a year until my parents found out and the stuff got to my faculty officer and had to be withdrawn from the school. Scared of my father, I ran away from home twice and had to go home because of my mom. My dad practically disowned me and although I’ve begged, he still insisted on having nothing to do with me.

My mom (God bless her soul) took up the challenge of sponsoring my education and I’m grateful for that because I know how hard it has been especially dealing with my dad who strongly wants me to be a desolate because of what I did earlier. It’s been two years, in my final year and my dad hasn’t still moved on. I know how disappointed someone can be when someone fails you but is that enough to write that person off that he/she can never fail us? I’m a totally changed person and he refused to see that. He keeps on holding on to a past that has vapourised. My mom keeps telling me to ignore everything he says to me and face my studies squarely but that can sometimes be hard when every time I step home, all my dad is about is the money I wasted then and not the progress I’m making now. I do not hate him despite everything. He’s not given a kobo since that time and I never bothered him with it. My mom doesn’t bother him too. Why then should he in every way look for a way to pull me down instead of encourage me to go further? Just yesterday, he still told someone not to help me with my IT placement in Nestlé. Is my offence so great that the dude can’t think of forgiveness? Is he not teaching me as unforgiving as he is?

It is so bad that I can’t even go to the house and call it a home because I can’t find happiness there. I can stay away for half a year without missing the place and when I tell people I don’t want to go home, they get all preachy on me just because they don’t know half of the things I go through in the hands of my “father”. Parents are guardians and role models to their children but what lessons am I supposed to pick from this man? If I treat my own children the same way he is treating me, will he be happy with me? Or if he grows old and grey and we all gang up to not take care of him or neglect, how will he feel?.

So many parents do not even understand the reasons for getting married and making babies. They just do it to please the society. I could have asked him if he preferred me dead rather than succeed but all I could ask was what of God up there that we fail every minute and forgives us every time. I’ve watched my father do so many absurd things since I was small that marriage scares the hell out of me. Whenever someone says the prayer “a man like your father is who you will meet”, I’m quick to reject it without thinking twice. Who wants a man who acts as if he did us a favour by giving birth to us or who wants a man that will make my kids hide in terror whenever they hear his voice? I should see my dad and say, that’s the kind of man I want to marry or be like not the other way round. He makes such a poor role model and many times, I wished my mom never met him.

I know parenting is tough but as youths, we can still change things by thinking thoroughly what we want to achieve in the lives of our kids before thinking of marriage. I know marriage is the union of two people who love themselves, been through happy and sad together and have found themselves compatible to live together but we should place our emotions aside and consider what’s best for our children. When you can’t train your kids well, they go all off and you too can’t be happy. Whatever stigma your child carries, you carry it too. Think of the best thing you want your children to be and look for someone who shares the same opinion with you.

13  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Osoba Rules Out Reconciliation With Amosun on: 30-05-2014 08:00 AM

The crisis rocking the All Progressives Congress in Ogun State deepened on Thursday as a former governor of the state and national leader of the party, Chief Olusegun Osoba, foreclosed reconciliation with the governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun.

He said this during a consultative meeting with his loyalists at his Ibara home in Abeokuta.

The APC in Ogun has been bedevilled with internal crisis which led to the emergence of parallel executive councils.

One of the groups is loyal to Amosun while the other pitches its tent with Osoba.

Osoba, explained that neither the intervention by traditional rulers nor the national leadership who might suggest harmonisation of the executive in any format would make him change his stance.

He added he would not accept apology from them or the governor.

While addressing his loyalists, mostly drawn from the 20 local government areas in the state, Osoba said his faction had reached some decisions which he held dear to his heart.

Speaking in Yoruba, he explained that their relationship dated back to 1988, adding that sooner or later he would tell them where he would pitch his tent.

He said,” Henceforth, at every ward meeting, please, be keeping registers because the ones they presented are fake ones.

“Go and open register at every ward. So, at the next meeting, I expect all the 236 wards to have got their registers and send them to their various local governments. Don’t listen to any hearsay, if you have anything that is not clear to you, ask your executive members.”

He noted that the executive members had informed him that they would not agree with any form of harmonisation, be it 70/30, 80/20 or even 95/5.”

He stated further,”Where we are now, no room for harmonisation or reconciliation. I then told them that, if it has got to that, it means we have drawn two parallel lines.

I asked them again if they have fully concluded after which we all   went into an inner meeting where I vowed to them that I will not forgive or reconcile with anybody.”

“If thousand of people prostrate, it is what you want that I will do, it is what you say that I will say, I will stand where you stand, I want to appeal to you, don’t be distracted.”

On which faction has the (control) of the party in the state, Osoba said nobody should drag that issue with anyone, as the side that has the people on its side has the party.

Commenting on the setting up of an elders’ committee to reconcile the factions in the party, he said he did not have confidence in the arrangement as “ I don’t know who is older than me politically among them. None of them is closer to Awolowo than I was. I wined and dined with him. I don’t have confidence in those people up there again.”

Osoba warned his loyalists not to take any job from Amosun.

Efforts made to speak with the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Yusuph Olaniyonu, on the issue proved abortive. His two telephones lines were switched off when our correspondent tried to reach him for comments.

14  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Eagles in USA with Mba on: 30-05-2014 07:59 AM

In the USA Nigeria will play against Greece in Chester, Pennsylvania on June 3 and the United States team in Jacksonville, Florida on June 7 ahead of the World Cup which kicks off in Brazil on June 12. The 30-man squad started their camping in London with the friendly match against Scotland on Wednesday which ended 2-2.

The Eagles Media Officer, Ben Alaiya, said on Thursday that Mba’s travel problems had been sorted out and he joined up with the squad in London in time for their departure for the United States. Mba was seated with the fans in the stands of the Craven Cottage as Nigeria and Scotland played the match. His arrival restores hope to his fans who had given up on the African Nations Cup hero making the final list of 23 players for Brazil 2014.

It was explained that Mba’s visa to travel to the UK had expired. His French club Bastia then requested he report to France, which altered his planned trip from Nigeria to Britain. The Nigeria Football Federation then put in urgent requests with the British High Commission in Abuja and then Paris before the former Warri Wolves player’s travel documents were renewed.

Mba was the last player to join the African champions. Nnamdi Oduamadi who also had travel hitches joined early enough to play the Wednesday match at the Fulham FC ground.

The squad will be cut to 23 for the World Cup on June 2, the NFF said. The date is FIFA’s deadline day for final lists.

Also Eagles officials have down played the knee injury Sunshine Stars defender Kunle Odunlami suffered in the World Cup warm-up against Scotland.

The Sunshine defender was taken off after the knee injury in the 74th minute and replaced by Efe Ambrose of Celtic, but Alaiya told Africanfootball.com that there was no cause for the alarm.

He said, “Odunlami’s injury is not a serious one, he had knock on his knee which shouldn’t be a problem. He is fine.”

Nigeria will play Iran, Bosnia and Argentina in Group F in the first round in Brazil.

15  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Professors, Perm Secs to Earn Full Salaries as Pension on: 30-05-2014 07:58 AM

Pension stipends received by professors and permanent secretaries will be augmented by the Federal Government when the new Pension Reform Act is eventually passed into law, investigation has revealed.

This development will enable them to continue to earn their full salaries in retirement even when they don’t have enough funds in their Retirement Savings Accounts, unlike other retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme.

The National Pension Commission had told the Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service and the House of Representatives Committee on Pension that some categories of workers were unable to get sufficient pension stipends as provided by the law.

These include top public servants like permanent secretaries, police officers, professors and others whose conditions of service prior to the enactment of the Pension Reform Act, 2004 allowed them to enjoy 100 per cent of their final pay as pension for life.

PenCom recommended to the Senate that the Federal Government should establish a severance package for them in addition to their retirement benefits under the CPS.

The memorandum submitted by PenCom to the Senate Committee on Pensions on the bill to repeal the PRA 2004 and enact the Pension Reform Act, 2013 made provisions for adjustments.

The Acting-Director General, PenCom, Mrs. Chinelo Anohu-Amazu, noted that Section 5(1) of the PRA 2013 included under the list of persons exempted from the scheme, professors covered by the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Amendment Act, 2012 and categories of employees entitled by virtue of their terms and conditions of service to retire with full retirement benefits.

According to her, this is not the intention of the amendment.

“These two categories of persons are not meant to be exempted from the Contributory Pension Scheme. Rather, they will continue to be under the CPS but will, upon retirement, get their full retirement benefits,” she said.

PenCom recommended that this should be rectified to reflect the true intention of the amendment.

The amended bill has passed through the necessary readings and is being harmonised prior to being passed into law by legislature and assented to by the President.

However, not all professors may enjoy this privilege because its implementation may be limited to those who became professors at least 20 years before retirement.

While the PRA requires that they should continue to contribute part of their monthly emolument into their RSAs, their pension benefits will not be dependent on the level of their contributions because the Federal Government will cover whatever shortage may occur.

The payment of retirement benefits under Section 4(1) (c) of the PRA 2004 allows for a lump sum payment to a retiree, provided that the amount left after the lump sum withdrawal will be sufficient to fund a programmed withdrawal over an expected life span or annuity for life, of not less than 50 per cent of his annual remuneration as of the date of retirement.

This therefore makes the monthly pension withdrawals to be a first charge on the RSA balance, while the residual, after providing for the monthly withdrawals, will be paid as lump sum.

16  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Man Flogs 16-Year-Old Son to Death in Lagos on: 30-05-2014 07:53 AM

The Lagos State Police command has arrested a father, identified simply as Benson, for allegedly flogging his son to death with a belt.

It was gathered that Benson, an indigene of Ishan in Edo State, allegedly beat up Bright, his 16-year-old son, to death after the teenager was accused of stealing N1,200.

happynigeria.com learnt that Benson, who had divorced his wife, was living on Olanrewaju Street, Oregun, Ikeja, with his two sons – Bright and Samuel, 14 years – when the incident happened.

Samuel told our correspondent that on Sunday evening, his father beat up his elder brother in anger because of the accusation against him. He added that Bright had been ill before the beating.

He said, “Bright has been sick for some days before that Sunday. Initially in the morning, Dad was looking for Bright, but could not find him. Later in the evening, Bright showed up with some boys on our street who told our father that Bright had stolen N1,200 from them.

“Truly, dad found the money in his pocket, but I think he stole it because he was hungry that day.

“My father was very angry on discovering the money in Bright’s pocket. He returned the money to the owners, and after they left, tied Bright’s hands with a rope. He then began to beat him with the iron end of his belt.”

Samuel noted that his father, who suffered from partial blindness, must have unintentionally hit Bright, who was still battling with a sickness, in the wrong place.

“I think it was the anger that made my daddy to make that mistake. The reason is because as soon as he did not hear Bright’s cries again, dad stopped beating him, carried him on his shoulders and rushed him to a private hospital near our house. But he was said to be dead when we got to the hospital,” he added.

However, Benson’s neighbours told our correspondent that the man, despite his eyes’ problem, had the habit of beating his children with any object.

One of the neighbours, who identified herself simply as Oluwaseun, explained that the man began beating the boy around 9pm, adding that Bright’s pleas for mercy fell on the dad’s deaf ears.

She said, “The man is simply a wicked man. He does not relate with people. The boy he killed usually takes him to church every Sunday because of his eyes’ problem. So, on that Sunday, he could have become angry that the boy left home and refused to take him to church.”

Another resident on the street, who craved anonymity, said Benson had a history of violence in the area.

“I was living in the house before. On one occasion when we were still living together, we had a small disagreement over where to spread clothes in the backyard of the house. The next thing was that Benson got a cutlass and chased me. I narrowly escaped from him that day. That was one of the reasons I moved out of that place,” he said.

happynigeria.com Metro learnt that Bright’s remains had been deposited at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital Ikeja mortuary for autopsy.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, confirmed that the case was under investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba.

17  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Obasanjo Warns Military Officers Over Abducted Chibok Girls on: 30-05-2014 07:44 AM

Stop playing public relations propaganda with the abduction of over 200 female student that were kidnapped from their school in Chibok Borno State, ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo has warned the Nigerian military.

Reacting to comments made by the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh, that the Nigerian military knew the whereabouts of the abducted girls but can't go in to rescue them, Obasanjo said:
“This is not an issue that you will play public relations propaganda with. It is a serious issue that is like a spear in the heart of the parents and whatever statement we make and action we take, if it will not really deal with the issue in a way that will bring those girls out safe and secure and make their families happy and will also give every Nigerian a sense of security, then such statements should not be made.”
Obasanjo said that he would be surprised if the Chibok girls are “returned intact.”

Asked to confirm whether or not he met with some relations of the Boko Haram leaders, Obasanjo said that he was planning to inform President Goodluck Jonathan before holding talks on the Chibok girls “but was surprised at how certain meetings have turned out.”

“I cannot have a plan without the Presidency being involved,” he said and added that he was not “going on a one-man mission,” to rescue the kidnapped girls, insisting that doing so would be unproductive

Obasanjo, who spoke with Channels TV in Lagos, said Shehu Sani was too fast to disclose the meetings.

He added, “I have to involve the President and he also tells me this is what we are doing or this is what we are pursuing either in addition or along with what we are doing or not”.

Speaking on Jonathan’s allegation that the girls' abduction was done to bring down his government, Obasanjo said such thought was “unfortunate.”

“If the Presidency is obsessed with one thing and one thing only and any other thing of concern to Nigeria is secondary then the Presidency will take that position, then this will be unfortunate,” he added.

18  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / How Fela’s "Double Wahala" Has Changed My Life ––Oritsefemi on: 30-05-2014 07:43 AM

The secret desire of all Naija musicians is to record one ‘lucky’ hit song that will give him breakthrough. This is what has happened to Oritse Femi with his "Double Wahala for Deady Body" and he is so happy:
“There were times when I had no money to pay studio fees and I would ask my friends for a loan. After paying the studio fee, I would be left without the fare for my transport back home. When I eventually trekked home, there would be no food to eat.
“At that time, the fee was N2, 500. I could remember that August Studio in Apapa charged N5, 000 per session. That was where the Plantashun Boys produced all their albums. But I could not afford to go there. So I used Mighty Mouse studio in Ajegunle where the fee was N2, 500 per session.
“Things have definitely changed. Nowadays, I don’t charge less than N3m to perform at a concert. Sometimes the concerts are funded by multinational companies and we have to tour 20 states. Multiply N3m by 20 states and you will understand what I am saying. The situation has indeed improved.”

Recalling the rough days before he eventually recorded Double Wahala, Oritse Femi told E-Punch:
"I was almost frustrated because my career had over the years failed to generate the desired response from music fans. I prayed to God first for inspiration and basically retraced my steps. It was then it occurred to me that my fans actually want something dynamic for a change. Consequently, because the music we are doing is Afro hip-hop and since Fela was the king of Afro hip hop, I decided to begin by paying homage to him.”

19  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Minister Of Information Has Declared Jonathan’s Office Vacant on: 30-05-2014 07:42 AM

The All Progressives Congress (APC) said the comment credited to information minister Labaran Maku that the federal government was spending significantly on security in three of its controlled states was a categorical declaration of the office of the president vacant by the minister.

According to APC, by that statement Maku has proved that President Goodluck Jonathan is only the leader of the PDP and not actually a President of and Commander-in-Chief of Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Friday in Lagos by its national publicity, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the APC described Maku’s comment as “a tragic and insensitive statement from an honourable minister of the Federal Republic about innocent children, some of whom are minors with neither political leaning”.
“The campaign to rescue the abducted girls has now been clearly polarized and politicized by the federal government. So sad, so unfortunate, so callous, so mean, so irresponsible, so brazen, so not parental, so not governmental,” APC declares.

It would be recalled that at the weekly Federal Executive Council briefing on Wednesday, the minister had drawn attention to the entire money federal government had been spending to maintain security in three states that are controlled by the APC.

The leading opposition party regretted that this was coming from government at a time that foreign nationals who are not members of APC are spending time and resources campaigning for the rescue of these girls”.

It cited the U.S. and UK where it said Republicans, Democrats as well as Liberal Democrats, Conservatives and Labour were “united in campaigning for the rescue of our daughters”.

APC said at this juncture, it is clear that PDP leadership is a disaster in Nigeria.
