2  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Boko Haram: Senegalese mallams pray with Jonathan in Aso Rock •...As president, on: 1-06-2014 12:41 AM

SENEGALESE Muslim clerics, led by Grand Khalifah Tijjani Ahmed Ibrahim Inyass, were at the Presidential Villa on Saturday at the invitation of President Goodluck Jonathan to join him in praying for God’s intervention in the insecurity situation in the country.

The clerics had come to the country for a programme in Gombe but the president requested them to visit him before they returned to Senegal.

Grand Khalifah Tijjani is the son of Shehu Ibrahim Inyass, the late founder of the Tijjaniyas Muslim sect.

With Khalifah Sheikh Ahmed Tijjani Inyass were Tijjani Awwalu, Muhammadau Makky Inyass, Mansur Inyass, Ahmed Tijjani Inyass, Bashir Inyass, Inyass Mustapha Inyass, Abdulahi Muhammad Maigemu, Ibrahim Dahiru Bauchi and Aliyu Ibrahim.

Spokesman of the group that came to the Villa, Ahmed Tijjani Sani Anwalu, told State House correspondents after the meeting which took place at the First Lady’s Wing, that their presence at the Presidential Villa was historic and in line with the precedence set by the founder of the sect.

He recalled that Shehu Ibrahim Inyass had similarly visited former Heads of State, Generals Aguiyi Ironsi and Yakubu Gowon when they were at the helms of the nation’s affair.

According to him, they were in the Villa with a message for all Muslims and non-Muslims to come together to pray for peaceful co-existence and for an end to the security situation in the country.

He said: “It is a historic visit because it has been done by his (Grand Khalifah’s) father with the then president, General Yakubu Gowon and General Aguiyi Ironsi.  So, the history is repeating itself and we came for the Maulud of Ibrahim Inyass Gombe and on his way going home, the president requested for a courtesy visit and Shehu granted that.”

On whether they raised any issue of concern with the president,  the spokesperson said: “We want to put ourselves together, all Muslims and non-Muslims, for peaceful co- existence and prayers so that we can all fight the insecurity in this country.

“The main purpose of coming here is part of the prayers for peace in this country.”

Also present at the meeting were Vice President Namadi Sambo; Jones Arogbofa, Chief of Staff to the President; Mohammed Abubakar Kachalla, Deputy Chief of Staff; Bukar Goni Aji, Head of Service; ministers including Mohammed Adoke (Attorney-General and Minister of Justice); Bala Mohammed (Federal Capital Territory); Zainab Maina (Women Affairs); Idris Umar (Transport); Khaliru Alhassan (Minister of State Health); Asmau Mohammed (Minister of State for Agriculture) and Dr. Reuben Abati (Special Adviser on Media and Publicity), among others.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadou Keita of Mali was also at the Presidential Villa on Saturday to discuss with Jonathan on how to deal with the insurgency in parts of the country.

He told State House correspondents after the meeting that he was in Abuja to discuss with Jonathan on the way forward in the fight against Boko Haram.

He said: “I have come to meet my brother on the issue of insecurity to see what we can do. That is why I’m here this morning.

“I came to meet my brother. I’m also grateful to him and Nigerian people for their warmth reception since I came into Abuja and good luck to Nigerians.”

3  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Funmi Iyanda on abusive marriages Abusive men should be excommunicated on: 1-06-2014 12:32 AM

DURING the week, the social media buzzed with so many activities, among which issues on spousal abuse were raised.

A Twitter user, @Moe, who was an eyewitness to a violent couple scene, narrated her ordeal, saying “My hands are shaking. I have never seen a woman being beaten like that in my entire life. I have never.”

According to her, she was driving when she noticed strange movements inside a car that was driving in front of her.

“Before it stopped so abruptly, I noticed weird movements in the driver and front passenger seats. I wasn’t wearing my glasses. As the car stopped, I came down (from) my car to holler. Next thing I saw clearly. The man (driver) was punching the passenger so hard. He was beating her so ferociously. All windows were up. There was a baby in a baby car seat behind. I kept hitting the windows, At last the man rolled down. At this time I was so furious.

“‘How dare you beat a woman like that?’ was all I kept saying. The man replied ‘I am not a mad man that I will just be beating her for no reason; ask her what she did. See my shirt. She tore it.’

“I went to the passenger’s side, opened the door and asked the woman to come down. She said ‘I do not have anywhere else to go.’ She sat there in the car, the man kept beating her. As he was beating her, he kept screaming ‘How many times? How many times?’

“I kept begging the woman to come down. She just closed the door and rolled up and he kept beating her. I kept hitting the car. Then, they drove off. I don’t even know how to react. I am still on that spot, trying to make sense of what I just experienced.”

To this, TV presenter and activist tweeted: “No family/church/institution should encourage a daughter to return to an abusive relationship/marriage. If you touch my child, l will kill you.”

Funmi Iyanda further added: ‘Girls, rule 1. There are no princes anywhere waiting to rescue you. You own and owe you; not him or anyone else. Leave at first slap’

An enranged Iyanda then said ‘Churches, if not so concerned with the bottom line of patronage would excommunicate abusive men or women.’

4  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / 20-yr-old woman ordered to refund N30,000 dowry on: 1-06-2014 12:31 AM

A Grade 1 Area Court  in Aso Pada, Mararaba, Nasarawa State, has ordered a 20-year-old woman, Patience Kaka, to refund  the sum of N30,000 which was paid as her  bride price to her  ex-husband, Samson Ade, within seven days.

The judge, Mr Albert Maga, gave the order after counsel to Samson, Mr Idris Gadzama, told the court that Patience refused  to  adhere  to the court’s  order given  on April to pay back the dowry.

He further  advised  Patience  to discuss with her relatives  on how to make the refund.

Patience, a fuel attendant, had earlier  told the court  she had been ill for a month  and didn’t  have   enough money  to make a refund.

“I want the court to give me up to next month to enable me pay back the N30,000 he paid as my bride price,’’ she said.

Patience on November 14, 2012 instituted a divorce suit against Samson.

She told the court she was no longer interested in their marriage as she suspected that the husband intended to use her for rituals.

She also alleged that he didn’t  take good care of her and always maltreated her.

Samson denied the allegations and told the court, he still loved his wife.

On April 9, the court finally separated them and ordered Patience to  make a  refund of  the sum of  N30,000 paid as her bride price to Samson.

The court refused to grant  Patience the two-weeks grace to make the refund.

“Illness is not an excuse not to obey a court order,” it  said.

5  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / How I discovered I could make people laugh – Holy Mallam on: 1-06-2014 12:30 AM

Nigerian comedian and father of ethical comedy , Ajibola Adebayo popularly known as Holy Mallam, speaks on the Nigerian comedy industry in this interview with NEWTON RAY UKWUOMA.

It took so long to see you. What has been keeping you so busy?
I’ve been engaging business. You know, it takes 10 years to build a brand. I’ve been doing comedy for 14 years now. The brand has given me a platform to diversify. So, I’m trying to diversify. Now, I do musical equipment importation. I have a school where I coach entrepreneurs how to strategically build brands and sustain a brand. I have learnt a lot from my mentors. I think it is time to let others learn from me.

How would you evaluate your progress after 14 years of doing professional comedy?
I see myself basically as someone who has been privileged to make a mark. We started gospel comedy in 2000. We realised that it was seen as a religious brand. We had to play into the market need. We changed it to ethical comedy to make the brand more professional. It has worked. We have been invited to perform for corporate bodies, individuals and churches as well. Looking back, I would say we have made some giant strides.

You use a lot of ‘we’?
Yes. I use ‘we’ because I have a company with staff who come up with plans and strategy for the brand.

Looking at the comedy industry in Nigeria; what strategic vacuum does ethical comedy fill?
Ethical comedy is the only way out as far as I am concerned. It’s about the only kind of comedy that makes sense. This is because it cuts across all ages and audiences. I studied Communication Arts. One of the things I learnt which helped build my career is ethics. The ethics of a profession are the principles that guide it. It sets a borderline that we must not cross. It stipulates what is acceptable in a profession. I understood this before I started comedy. And it has helped me. Ethical comedy is an acceptable and non-vulgar comedy. Ethical comedy does not only cut across all spectra; it’s also relevant everywhere, unlike the others.

Are you saying you came into the industry fully aware of the diversities and made a choice?
Yes.

How do you make the distinction between ethical and unethical comedy?
Insulting people, ‘yabbing’ them and doing vulgar jokes are, to me, totally unacceptable. Nevertheless, you may find some people who appreciate them. I have a right to do what works for me. This is what works for me.

Is there any authorised body that censors the materials comedians release?
No, I cannot tell you there is such a body. The best way is for one to censor oneself. I cannot tell you there is a body that governs what is ethical or what is not; but if you watch the audience, you can tell when they are at home with a particular joke or not.

We also hear that you are pulling young comedians into your camp. Are you also into mentoring?
I don’t have a camp; but I would say I am doing my best in that department. Those who are sincere enough to take notes and accept the truth and those who would like to move away from the convention may save the industry. Yes, I have been able to train quite a few talents. I have a school, Glee Academy, where we teach MCs and comedians to be professional and ethical. There are 11 courses. I take one of the courses myself – Professionalism and Originality. You have to be original and professional. A lot of events out there are for corporate clients. One does not have to go there to insult people including expatriates. I prefer to see my profession beyond the local arena. One can be invited to work abroad. An unprofessional comedian can be an embarrassment to our country. I believe that a true comedian should make people laugh without anyone regretting ever attending the event.

How would you define the word ‘wit’?
‘Wit’ is humour. It might be funny and it might also have a very negative effect on a few members of the audience or the audience entirely. People react to funny remarks differently. While some may decide to laugh it off, others take negative comments personally. But I want to believe, speaking from an ethical standpoint, that good humour should carry everyone along in such a way that no one laughs at the other person’s expense. It is said that in every niche, there is a market; and in every market, there is a niche. I saw all of that before I decided to do things differently. I also tell people that there is nothing as good as becoming the pioneer of what you find yourself doing. I am a pioneer of gospel comedy, or what has been modified as ethical comedy. The term ethical comedy is just to give it a corporate, not religious, face. However, the content is one and the same thing. We do corporate as well as church events.

Can you tell us the side effects of unethical humour?
We have heard instances where a sensitive issue was turned into jokes and it left sour taste in every mouth. It was not a good experience. This is just a fragment of what uncultured jokes can do. I do not (rule out) a situation where, just like some songs are not allowed to hit the air waves, some comedians are not allowed to release materials. It’s happening gradually. Some event planners are now becoming sensitive to the kind of MC and comedians they invite. You have seen cases where comedians are beaten blue black by an offended member of the audience. There are countless backlashes of vulgar jokes. If allowed to spread, it’s going to have a negative effect on the society. And if I had my way, I would say no to unethical comedy. I want to believe we run a sane society. Vulgarity should not be allowed to spread. Vulgar jokes pollute society.

In other words, you call unethical comedians pollutants?
No; don’t quote me. If it’s vulgar, it is vulgar.

Would you call yourself a corporate comedian?
Initially I was seen as a comedian. That was what I thought I was. In life, two key things happen to us: we grow and develop. Over the years, I’ve grown beyond the level of a comedian. When I started, I was really hungry for more. I wanted to have and know more. People still call me a comedian, but the truth is I am a businessman. Comedians have been known to diversify into other things. Some sing, act, dance or do business. In my case, I not only do business, I have also come to understand that I was born to be a speaker – to inspire people in Nigeria and also in Africa. I’ve come to discover that as my main calling on earth. However, every good speaker must have good sense of humour. It helps you to sustain the attention. I noticed that comedy is just a trivial aspect of speaking. Just about three years ago, I discovered that I was meant to be a public speaker, not just a comedian. Comedy gave me a platform. It’s an accessory for my main calling. Now, I devote my time to speaking to young people. They are our leaders, and it is our duty to equip them with the right information about leadership. I do that. I do business and I do corporate events as MC. I feel better when I do corporate events.

How did you discover yourself?
I was a drummer in my church then. I had fellow instrumentalists around me, who laughed at anything I said. I presumed I made them laugh a lot. I did not know I would become a comedian until Kennedy, one of our instrumentalists, told me very casually, “you can do this. You can make people laugh.” Then we used to have Christian comedians come to our church, the likes of Blow, Ultimate Mallam, Boy O Boy, and so on, for our monthly programme called Hosanna Night. It used to be fun. After some persuasion from my friends (because I used to be a very shy person), I enrolled as a comedian that night alongside Ultimate Mallam (now Mr Patrick). The time allotted for comedy was 10 minutes. After the first comedian used up eight minutes, I had two minutes left. I never had any training. I didn’t know exactly what to do when I got on stage. But I was able to make them laugh. That was the singular motivation for me – that I was able to make them laugh that night really encouraged me. That was the motivation that nudged me on till today.

Give us one of your best jokes?
My jokes are spontaneous; I need an audience. We are not doing any jokes now.

6  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Military insists it knows location of Chibok girls •Denies hoisting of Boko Hara on: 1-06-2014 12:28 AM

DISCOUNTENANCING the jabs thrown at the disclosure, the Nigerian military, on Wednesday, insisted that it is aware of the locations where the over 200 abducted Chibok secondary school girls were being held.

Defence Spokesperson, Major-General Chris Olukolade, who spoke at the regular briefing by the National Information Centre, Abuja said, “let everyone believe what the Chief of Defence Staff said and if you don’t believe, wait for developments, but our interest is in the safety of these children and every effort will be put towards that and we expect cooperation from everyone.

“We remain with the position taken by the CDS. When we have any further comments or developments, the nation will be told.”

Speaking on the recent attacks on Buni Yadi, Yobe State, Olukolade confirmed that 12 soldiers and 13 policemen were killed during the fighting, but denied insinuations that the troops in Buni Yadi were abandoned by the military command during the hours of the incident.

“The logistics will have to be understood and it will not be proper just to conclude that there were no help or response. However, we will continue to respond, based on logistics that is available and information that is made available as quickly as possible,” he said.

Speaking on the purported hoisting of Boko Haram flags in some communities in Borno State, Olukolade said the Nigerian military would continue to defend territorial integrity of the country.

“Nigerian Armed Forces will not allow any portion of this country to bear any strange flag. It is our duty and responsibility to defend the territorial integrity of this country. We will not allow any strange flag to fly anywhere,” he said.

He said the security forces would never allow such situation, adding that “we will not allow any portion of this country to hoist strange flag.”

Olukolade said based on intelligence reports and information provided by Nigerians, a number of arrests had been made in different parts of Kaduna and Zamfara states and thus reducing terror activities tremendously in those parts.

He also noted that a suspect had been arrested in connection with the Jos bombing.

7  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Jonathan, Obasanjo in private talks at Otedola’s burial •Jonathan, Obasanjo, oth on: 1-06-2014 12:27 AM

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan and former President Olusegun Obasanjo had a private discussion during the burial of the former Governor of Lagos State, Sir Michael Agbolade Otedola, on Friday.

Jonathan, whose presidential helicopter flew into Ibonwon town in Eredo Local Council Development Area of Lagos State around 8:35a.m., did not arrive at the church venue where the mass was held until around 11:15am in company with the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan; the National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Adamu Mu’azu; Minister of Works, Mike Onomonelem and other PDP chieftains.

Chief Obasanjo had arrived at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ibonwon about 10:35a.m. along with Senator Andy Uba, who both waited for the arrival of the Mr. President for the programme to commence.

However, the service started immediately the president arrived the church and took his seat.

After delivering his speech at the service, Jonathan told the congregation that he was leaving for Ghana and Obasanjo thereafter accompanied him to his car.

The two were however left alone to have a private discussion for some minutes before Jonathan left with his convoy to the helipad to board the presidential helicopter.

A source close to Obasanjo hinted that the former president used the brief discussion to drop an important piece of information to the president with a piece of advice on the state of the nation’s security.

Jonathan, Obasanjo,  others bid Otedola farewell
PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan on Friday described the former governor of Lagos State, late Michael Otedola, as a man who lived a life worthy of emulation, as his body was laid to the mother earth on Friday.

During a church service at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ibonwon, Epe, Eredo Local Council Development Area of Lagos, Jonathan extolled the deceased, saying that though he served barely two years in office, he impacted positively on the people of Lagos.

According to him, “late Otedola has left his mark in the sound of time. His legacy is worthy of emulation by all politicians and Nigerians generally.”

President Jonathan urged politicians to have the people at heart while occupying public office, stressing that when they leave, the people they serve will judge them accordingly.

He also urged Nigerians to continue to pray for the peace and unity of the country, acknowledging that their prayers have taken Nigeria thus far.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo described late Otedola as a worthy leader who lived a good life.

While delivering his sermon, Rev. Philips Aniagwu admonished the congregation to live a life to replicate that of Jesus Christ. He said everyone must some day depart this sinful world and only God knows the appointed time.

He opined that one must be careful when here on earth, so as not to be cut unawares by death.

He advised guests to reflect on their lifestyles to influence others positively with the goal of making heaven.

“Otedola’s works while alive  spoke for him. I am not here to sing his praises or to preach the best sermon,” he said.

Rev. Aniagwu urged Nigerians to continue to live as brothers and sisters.

One of the eminent Nigerians who extolled the virtues of late Otedola was Mr Segun Awolowo.

Other dignitaries in attendance were Governor Babatunde Fashola, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Cardinal Emeritus Olubunmi Okogie, Former Governor Peter Obi, Honourable Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Minister of Agriculture, Dr Akinwunmi Adesina, and many others.

8  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Suspension: Court fixes June 3 to hear Sanusi’s motion on: 1-06-2014 12:27 AM

The President of the National Industrial Court, Justice Babatunde Adejumo, on Friday, slated June 3, 2014, to hear the motions for stay of proceedings and execution of the judgment of a Federal High Court, Abuja, in the suit filed by the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, challenging his suspension from office by President Goodluck Jonathan.

When the matter came up on Friday, counsel representing the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Bello Adoke (SAN), Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), told the court that the respondents, including the President and the AGF, have separately filed a notice of appeal at the Court of Appeal against the judgment and have also filed motions for stay of proceedings, at the Industrial Court pending the outcome of the appeal.

The court said it would invoke Section 47 of the NIC Act to entertain the matter, since it was transferred by a court of coordinate jurisdiction.

The respondents, through their various counsel, said a federal high court in Abuja, sitting before Justice Gabriel Kolawole, erred in its judgment, when it declined jurisdiction to entertain the matter and still, went ahead to transfer the matter to the Industrial Court.

It would be recalled that Justice Kolawole had, last week Tuesday, declined jurisdiction to entertain Sanusi’s suit, on the ground that it was labour related and consequently, transferred it to the National Industrial Court for adjudication.

The suspended apex bank governor had, in his suit, wanted a court order reinstating him back as the CBN governor.

Jonathan suspended Sanusi four months before the end of his five-year term, accusing him of “financial recklessness and misconduct.”

It followed calls by Sanusi for an investigation of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) for allegedly withholding billions of dollars of oil revenue.

9  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Chibok: I won’t join issues with Borno government —Mu’azu on: 1-06-2014 12:26 AM

THE National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Ahmed Mu’azu, has reacted to the verbal attack on his person by the Borno State government over the circumstances leading to the abduction of over 200 girls from the Government Secondary School, Chibok, by Boko Haram insurgents.

The Secretary to the Borno State Government, Ambassador Baba Ahmed, had reportedly described the PDP chairman as “a pathological liar” for telling Nigerians that both the Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, and the West African Examination Council (WAEC) had written to the governor not to allow examinations to take place in Chibok, which the governor refused to heed.

In a statement by Mr. Akin Oyegoke, the Special Adviser on Information and Communications Technology to the PDP chairman, Mu’azu said he would not trade words with the state government, as he was more concerned about the development of the country and how to win the fight against terror.

According to him, what Nigerians need now, irrespective of party affiliation, is to close rank so as to curtail the activities of the Boko Haram sect.

The statement read: “The attention of the office of the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ahmadu Adamu Mu’azu, has been drawn to a press interview by the Secretary to the State Government of Borno State, Ambassador Baba Ahmed.

“(The) interview posted in one of the online portals, Sahara Reporters, on Thursday 29th May 2014 in which Ambassador Baba Ahmed denied the letter of advice from the Federal Ministry of Education advising the government of Borno State and other states in the region because of security situation not to conduct WAEC or NECO examinations outside of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, is a clear acceptance of the lopsided approach by the government in Borno State to fight insurgency in the area.

“The National Chairman of the PDP ordinarily will not like to join issues with any Nigerian, especially not with Ambassador Baba Ahmed; but as an elder statesman and a stakeholder in this administration, we wish to state again that for us to win the fight against terror in Nigeria, we must all close ranks irrespective of party affiliations and heed all popular advice from any agency of government to curtail the activities of the Boko Haram sect.

“We wish to state again that other states in the region which adhered to this advice from WAEC and the Federal Ministry of Education were able to conduct WAEC/NECO in their capitals peacefully.

“We owe our people the collective duty to protect and provide for them and we wish to once again advice the government and stakeholders in Borno State and, indeed, all Nigerians to cooperate with government at all levels to stop this spate of violence.”

The PDP chair noted that while he respects the office of the Secretary to the State Government and the person of Ambassador Baba Ahmed, “as a highly respectable Nigerian who has served the state and the country meritoriously, we wish again to advice Baba Ahmed to put his tenses together when addressing a public figure and the person and office of Ahmed Adamu Mu’azu, a former Governor of Bauchi State and the chairman of the largest party in Africa.”

The statement further said: “Adamu Mu’azu is definitely not a pathological liar as referred to by Baba Ahmed; rather, he is a man highly revered by his people; a man of integrity, a refined politician and a gentleman.”

Gunmen suspected to be armed robbers, on Friday afternoon, shot dead the driver of the wife of former governor of Oyo State, Chief (Mrs) Kemi Alao-Akala,  Alhaji Aladi Ajikobi, around Bodija GRA, Ibadan.

The robbers, according to sources, had trailed Alhaji Ajikobi who was driving a black Ford Jeep, on motorcycle, on his way from a bank.

The sources further hinted that the driver, who hails from Ilorin, Kwara State, was almost entering the Akala’s house before the robbers pounced on him, shot him dead and went away with valuables.

A media assistant to the former governor, Ademola Adeniyi, who confirmed the incident,  however, denied any assassination attempt regarding the incident.

He said “it was purely an armed robbery case. The robbers had trailed the driver who was coming from the bank. Her Excellency was not in the car but nothing sinister was suspected.”

According to him, “The driver was coming from the bank and was almost getting to his destination before the robbers attacked him.”

Adeniyi further disclosed that the matter had been taken over by the police, saying the police had commenced investigation into the incident.

When contacted, the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Superintendent of Police Olabisi Ilobanafor, confirmed the incident.

“I can confirm the incident to you. The police dragnet section has commenced full investigation into the incident. They can only run for a while but they can never escape from the network of police surveillance,” she said.

14  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / This is a Place You Will Love To Be on: 31-05-2014 10:52 PM

Travelling by boat, train and road is, to my mind, far more rewarding and less stressful than flying. It allows you to ease slowly into a new country, rather than getting dumped in a place with a new language, climate and culture.

So when we decided to visit Spain and return to Javea, the town near Alicante where my wife Debs grew up, I was determined to avoid a flight and make it a road trip – in a motorhome.

When I first mentioned my plan to Debs, she was aghast. But when Lloyd from hire firm Chief Rentals delivered our six-berth Swift Escape 686 to our door, she soon changed her mind. She saw the space (it’s 22ft long), and noted the hot water, shower, bathroom, oven, fridge and heater.

To make it even easier, Chief provides bedding, bikes, a food hamper and child seats – it seemed everything, including the kitchen sink, was taken care of.

And when I saw the look of delight on the faces of our sons – Daniel, four, and two-year-old Darley – I knew I had made the correct decision.

Packing before we set off was a simple affair. We no longer had to worry about squeezing things into bags – instead we just threw everything we wanted into our new home.

Heading for Portsmouth to catch our Brittany Ferries service to Santander in northern Spain, we were amazed by the elevated views from the Swift – we could now see over hedges and into fields we had driven alongside countless times. Our world had just got bigger.

Boarding the ferry was hassle-free too – we just rolled up and rolled on, so much easier than lugging bags around a crowded airport. On board it was like a hotel, and even with two active little boys, our 26-hour journey flew by thanks to the children’s entertainer, playroom, cinema and deliciousrestaurant food.

Our en-suite cabin was a relaxing place to watch the horizon shift from English Channel grey to Bay of Biscay blue either side of a sound sleep.

The next day we watched excitedly as the Spanish coast edged ever closer. After disembarking, we were on the excellent open roads.

The stunning greenery of northern Spain soon gave way to a more familiar country of spectacular mountainous landscapes and sun-kissed vineyards. We drove a couple of hours to Haro where our first campsite experience was fantastic (we had booked them all beforehand through the Camping & Caravanning Club).

We’d been longing for tortilla and found a tapas bar where Debs realised her Spanish wasn’t as rusty as she’d feared. From Haro it was another pleasurable drive on the deserted autopista to Zaragoza. We stopped for tapas whenever we fancied at lay-bys that had picnic tables.

By the second night, we settled into a bedtime pattern. Daniel clambered on the bed above the driver’s cab, and I climbed up too. It was so comfortable I slept there all night. Debs and Darley took the double bed converted from the lounge seats. Every night we slept wonderfully – but not before Daniel and I had gazed through our ‘secret’ window at the stars.

We grew increasingly attached to our motorhome. Made by Yorkshire-based Swift, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, it looked after us so impeccably that we vowed to buy one upon our return to Britain.

We roamed onwards in it past rusty roadside sculptures, wind turbines and alluring almond blossoms, all under mountainous backdrops. We loved the freedom this form of travel allowed us – the warm breeze drifting through open windows, and we ate meals while admiring one incredible view afteranother. At the campsites, the boys adored meeting new neighbours.

We couldn’t resist a visit to Valencia during our odyssey. We parked up near its Bioparc zoo where the boys loved watching the elephants, giraffes and gorillas in this stunningly imaginative 25-acre park.

From the primates we headed to La Pepica restaurant in the city, lured by its reputation of the finest paella in Spain. We weren’t disappointed as we ate at this historic venue – a favourite of Hemingway – poised beautifully by La Malvarrosa beach.

We soon discovered we were only steps from another stunning sandy beach once we arrived at Oliva’s Kiko Park campsite near Valencia, which was our favourite stay of all.

Even though we weren’t jaded, it was great to settle in for a few nights after covering 1,000 miles in a week. During our stay we strolled along the beach for café bombóns. Next we made it to Javea’s crescent beach and Debs’s childhood home, nestled under Montgo, the 2,470ft mountain that lookslike a slumbering elephant. We headed down to the stunning Cumbre del Sol beach, where 20 years ago Debs used to play.

During our journey back to Santander, we discovered Aranjuez near Madrid, a 16th Century royal palace, and later the dramatic snowcapped Sierra de Guadarrama range. Arriving back in Santander for the ferry to Britain, we found we had several hours to kill. Fortunately, there was no hanging about in a stuffy airport for us – we used the time to play on the beach.

When we finally got home, we all agreed our trip felt more like an extended period of travel than a holiday. It was as if we had been away for months rather than weeks.

It was perfect family time and left us feeling totally connected with a country. I’ve spent about a year of my life in Spain and Debs much more than that, yet we were in no doubt that we had experienced Spain like never before.

15  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Fabulous fashion tips on: 31-05-2014 10:49 PM

Look and feel gorgeous by revamping your style ! Fashion tips for black women have never been more fabulous. Although this style guide is geared toward African women, these ideas will flatter nearly every person.

Dress for your shape. One of the biggest fashion mistakes is dressing for a figure other than your own. Too often women stuff them clothes 2 sizes too small or hide beyond baggy outfits. Forget the number on the label and wear clothes that truly fit you. Flatter your body by discovering your body shape and dressing for it accordingly.

Play up your skin tone. If you have a light caramel complexion, neutral shades like pearl white, sand and pale grey bring out your natural luminosity. Medium, chocolate brown skin types shine in warm colors like burnt orange, chestnut brown and burgundy. Deep shades like eggplant, brick red and royal blue look lovely on the darkest skin tones. Always wear a color that makes you smile !

Have fun with prints. Prints are one of the best ways to reveal a playful side. Since prints and patterns draw attention, wear them on the parts of your body you feel most confident about. For example, if you love your legs, try an a-line skirt with small polka dots. If you have a small middle, show it off with a vertically striped blouse. When it comes to fashion tips for black women and all women in general, playing up your assets is a must.

Choose a fashion icon. Sometimes the style of a celebrity can give your own idea look-book a boost. Look for a celebrity or fashion role model type with a similar figure as your own. How does she flatter her frame? Does she use certain colors or shapes to enhance her assets ? While you should always create your own look, a little inspiration may help!

Lastly, don’t forget to showcase your beautiful skin but choosing brightly colored accessories like earrings and necklaces. Chunky necklaces flatter most body types and draw the eye upwards. A pair of colorful earrings set off a bright smile and well cared for lips. Take care of your skin with anti aging regimen and premier clinical products from LifeCell. A beautiful, healthy complexion never goes out of style!

NAN – Malaysian police have detained 13 men and are still looking for other suspects following allegations that a 15-year-old girl was ra’ped by 38 men in an abandoned hut, a report said on Friday.

The media reported that the assault took place in the Northern state of Kelantan on May 20 when the girl met a girlfriend and was lured to an empty hut reported to be a local drug haunt.

It said that the men took turns to ra’pe her for hours.

Police said they were also investigating whether her 17-year-old friend was also ra’ped.

Report says the alleged attack, which is one of several brutal cases this week underscoring the violence to which women are being subjected across Asia, sparked outrage among women.

Politicians from a Muslim party running in the region said that their proposal to introduce Islamic hudud law with harsh penalties would deter offenders.

State and federal police officers either declined comment or could not be immediately reached.

Media accounts, quoting information from district police chief, Azham Otham, said that 38 men were involved in the crime.

The reports said that several of those detained had tested positive for amphetamine.

It added that a man and his two teenage sons were among those detained.

However, police said action could have been taken had villagers reported the addicts’
presence.

“It is very disturbing to me that no one in the village was even suspicious when the closest neighbour was a mere 20 metres away,’’ police chief, Azham said.

According to police statistics, almost 3,000 ra’pe cases were reported to the police in 2012, of which 52 per cent involved girls of 16 and below.

Convicted ra’pists face up to 30 years in prison and whipping, but many on internet sites wanted stricter punishment.

18  Forum / Relationships & Romance / Advice: She Bed Wetted The First Night They Spent Together on: 31-05-2014 10:44 PM

Normally I don’t really like coming on here to seek for people’s opinion on issues like this, but when a good friend, almost like a brother called me to seek for advice on this issue, I couldn’t say a thing. I was literally speechless.

He met this beautiful looking lady about 3months ago. And they’ve been dating ever since. They both work in the same state. They’ve had se’x on different occasions. But until yesterday, she had never slept in his apartment. She came around yesterday night and couldn’t go back to her own apartment sake of the heavy downpour. So after the first and second round of marathon se’x, they slept in each others arms. He woke up in the middle of the night and discovered the bed was wet. Like bed wetting wet! She woke up this morning and greeted him, removed the bed sheet, her panties, asked for his boxers and washed em all. After which she knelt down and apologized profusely.

According to her, this is the first time anything like this has ever happened to her. He on the other hand couldn’t utter a word. She left an hour later and sent him a text that if he wants to break up with her, she’ll totally understand.

He called and said he is confused and doesn’t even know what to do. He loves her yes, but he is not sure if he can continue dating a lady who bed wets i.e. assuming she is being coy with the truth.

19  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / 16-Year Old Boy Murders Parents Because They Seized His IPhone on: 31-05-2014 10:40 PM

The boy says that there was no specific fight that prompted the brutal MURDER. The sadistic killer told authorities, ‘I just remember getting mad,’ Parker told the court. ‘It’s all from my dad. All this stuff like my dad taking away my iPod and stuff.’

The story gets worse. Vincent was an only child being raised by his hard working parents Carol, 57, and father Wayne, 55, in their Norfolk, Virginia home.

They did everything right – they lived in a good neighbourhood, and helped Vincent become an honor roll student.

But he boy snapped one day . . . and turned into a moster. On December 19, 2013 Vincent left school early while his dad was still at work. He showed up at the family home and surprised his mother – by dousing her in pepper spray.

While the 57 year old woman was blinded and unable to defend herself, Vincent stabbed his mother in the eye, and then beat her with a crowbar and metal baseball bat ‘until she stopped breathing’. A medical examiner noted 25 separate smashes and stabs on Mrs Parker’s neck, face and head.

The animal then waited patiently over his dead mother’s body until his father came in the house. He surprised his dad and hit him in the back of the head with a crowbar, smashing his skull. He then stabbed his father multiple times.

Luckily his father didn’t die from the mortal wounds. He managed to call 9-1-1 and tell them what happened. When the ambulance arrived Carol had already died. Wayne survived a short time but died in the hospital.

Yesterday Vincent plead guilty to two counts of second degree murder. A psychological evaluation found him to be both 100% sane and intelligent. He was charged as an adult and will be sentenced in September.
