2  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / A cry for help: Aisha Falode seeks justice for late rapper son on: 3-06-2014 07:10 AM

Nigerian ace broadcaster and member of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Aisha Falode is yet to come to terms with her son’s death, not only because of the grief of losing him, but because of the mystery in which the death of the late Oloruntoba Oluwadamilola Falode has been shrouded. Aisha Falode received the news of the death of Oloruntoba Oluwadamilola Falode on Saturday, February 15, 2014, with initial reports suggesting he died in a car crash. Police reports later revealed that Toba, as he was called by his peers, fell from the balcony of his apartment, located on the 17th floor of Manchester Towers, Dubai, Marina. The late budding rapper was buried on Monday, March 3, 2014 at the Trinity House, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The Late Toba Falode. Photo: Modernghana According to a statement from Aisha Falode, the reports from the Jebel Ali Police Station in Dubai on her son’s death revealed that Toba had been sitting on the railing of his balcony and swaying back and forth before the fatal fall. He had lived in Dubai for less than four months before his untimely death. He left London where he was staying with his sister for Dubai after he gained admission to study Audio Production at the SAE Institute in October 2013. A photo showing Toba’s apartment block. Photo: Mjemagazine. He was also into contemporary music, combining schooling with music production and rapping. His moniker was Tyler Fray. The late rapper had released a number of instrumentals on his SoundCloud page. Last year, he had excitedly tweeted about his mum being supportive of his music career: ‘Actually making important connects, thank God for my mom, moving on up!! Baba god Noni!!!’ His biography on social music plugin/player website Reverbnation reads: ‘Tyler is a young, talented musician who started singing at the age of 6 and started to write his own lyrics at the age of 9. At this early stage he decided that he wanted this to be his career. While most thought this was a phase he knew it wasn’t so he’s been working towards it ever since. He aims to be at the very top when he’s in and won’t stop till he’s a Legend. Watch him grow.’ Sadly, his dream of becoming a top selling Hip-hop artiste and producer was cut short. Aisha Falode, in a press conference held in Lagos on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, recalled the sad moment she received news of her son’s death. ‘In the early hours of the 15th of February 2014, I received a call from the security guard at my son’s apartment block informing me that something serious had just happened to my son, Toba. I then immediately called his close friend, Nick Allison, a South African, who then informed me that my Toba had passed on from falling from the balcony of his 17th floor apartment,’ she said. Unsatisfied by the numerous irregularities in the reports by Dubai Poilice, Aisha Falode, alongside a family friend and human rights lawyer Festus Keyamo flew to Dubai in April to start their own private investigations after sensing a cover up by the Dubai police. ‘However, because of the various inconsistencies in the police report given to my family, and because I know the apartment layout very well and my motherly intuition I knew something was not right. So I decided to investigate further by myself accompanied by a family member and my family lawyer Mr. Festus Keyamo,’ Aisha further revealed. After speaking with friends of her son in Dubai, the reports were completely different from what the police investigations revealed. She also said that her investigations have identified a Saudi national and a son of an Arab billionaire, Faisel Aldakmary Al-Nasser, and his British girlfriend, Olivia Melanie Richards Evans, as major suspects in Toba’s death. Aisha’s findings revealed that Faisel Aldakmary had suspected the late Toba of having an affair with his girlfriend Olivia, and had confronted her late son with that suspicion on numerous occasions. Faisel Aldakmary Al-Nasser, and his British girlfriend, Olivia Melanie Richards Evans. Photo: Facebook. ‘In the evening of the 14th of February, 2014, Toba, together with his friends, namely, Ebele Oladeji Onwugbufor, Nick Allison and Joachim Santene went to a club in Dubai known as M Deck, Media 1 Hotel, Media City. At the club, they met the said Faisal Aldakmary Al-Nasser and Olivia Richards who were also at the club. Shortly after the two left the club, Toba and his friends also left the club,’ Aisha Falode said. When Toba and his friends got home, they reportedly met Faisel Aldakmary and Olivia who looked ‘frightened’ and was ‘crying hysterically’. Aisha Falode’s findings further revealed that Toba, his friends, Faisel and Olivia all entered the apartment after which Toba, Faisel and Olivia entered Toba’s room ‘to sort things out’ from where they later exited the room and moved on to the balcony of the apartment on the 17th floor. ‘There were signs of serious argument coming from the balcony with raised voices and flaying hands by Faisal visible through the glass door of the balcony. After about twenty seconds Faisal and Olivia came back into the room and announced that Toba had fallen off the railings,’ Aisha said. The AIT Sports former correspondent revealed that during her investigations, she learnt that Faisal had blood splattered all over his shirt and he had bloody knuckles. She also learnt that there was also a noticeable cut on Faisal’s finger, which all suggest that Toba didn’t fall mistakenly from the balcony. Aisha Falode: Filed ‘The position of my Toba’s body (which can still be verified today) was not consistent with someone falling from the balcony (in which case the body would be much closer to the building) but was consistent with someone that was violently pushed from the balcony,’ Aisha Falode further revealed. Everybody present at the time of Toba’s death was arrested by the police. After the arrest, Aisha Falode’s investigation revealed that Faisal had resigned to his fate of spending years in jail for the part he played in Toda’s death. ‘Before and during the journey to the station, Faisal kept repeating to the hearing of everyone that the maximum punishment for him would be twenty-five (25) years in jail and that the other boys should not worry. Meanwhile, Olivia remained hysterical at the station, Faisal and Olivia were kept away from the rest and were interviewed separately, whereas the other three were kept in a separate room and interviewed separately,’ she said at the press conference.

Faisel Aldakmary Al-Nasser with his father. Photo: Facebook Ms. Falode claimed that the police report suspiciously left out the fact that Faisal and Olivia were present when Toba died, indicating a cover up plot by the Dubai police authorities. From her investigations, she found that Faisal was released and freed with the blood stained T-Shirt he had on. After recounting findings from her investigations, Aisha Falode appealed to the government to come to her aid and assist her in bringing justice to those that murdered her son. ‘I am appealing to my government that I have done much more than I should do as a grieving mother who was left with no option but to start investigating my own son’s murder by myself. I implore the Nigerian Government to prevail on the authorities in Dubai to re-open the investigation into the murder of my son, Toba Falode, and to bring to book Mr. Faisal Aldakmary Al-Nasser and Miss Olivia Melanie Richards both of whom murdered him in cold blood,’ the bereaved mother pleaded amid tears. However, Faisal Aldakmary Al-Nasser is insisting he is innocent of the murder accusations. On Monday, May 5, 2014 Faisal wrote on his Facebook wall: ‘Only god knows the truth and people accusing by not knowing the true story need to ask before pointing fingers.’...

Instagram user policy states that a user account cannot follow more than 7500 people. ‘In order to reduce unwanted spam, Instagram has recently placed a cap on the number of people that any account can follow at 7,500. This helps ensure that users do not violate our Community Guidelines. This change affects accounts that currently have less than 7,500 followers’, the social media company announced a while back. Here’s what Don Jazzy had to say about his ‘predicament’. ‘#DoroAnnouncement. Guys apparently Instagram stops me from following more than 7500 people. 9  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Bola Ige worked for development of Yorubaland, Nigeria —Gen Adebayo on: 3-06-2014 06:42 AM

Former governor of the old Western Region, General Adeyinka Adebayo on Monday, in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, said the late Minister for Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Chief Bola Ige, worked assiduously for the growth of Yorubaland and Nigeria, as a corporate entity.

He made this known at the inauguration of Bola Ige Mechatronic Institute by Governor Rauf Aregbesola, of Osun State, who sent forth 31 graduates for training in Germany to learn the art of new automobile maintenance technology.

Adebayo stated that: “I cannot forget Ige till I die, because he worked for Yorubaland and Nigeria. I am happy for being here. Ige was my commissioner for one year, eight months, just as he was a workaholic, and instead of me making him the Attorney-General, I made him my Commissioner for Agriculture. Bola Ige was the foundation  the South-Western states of the federation is enjoying in the area of agriculture.”

In his remarks, Aregbesola  stressed that the institute, when completed, would be the first in Nigeria, saying the institute would deal in the latest technology involved in modern vehicles.

According to him, “Osun is the first of all states to establish this world-class Automotive Skills-gap Bridge in Nigeria, which is meant for promoting skills needed for employability of our graduates, technicians and improvement of artisans in the sector.

“The German world-renowned Auto Didactic Equipment Manufacturers, Messrs LUCAS NULLE, Kerpen, Germany, was awarded the equipment supply contract with the letter of credit opened by the FirstBank Plc through Bank of Industry (BOI).

“To build the this institute, we obtained N1billion soft loan from the Bank of Industry; we commend automotive council and the FirstBank, which helped us to access it. Before you come back from Germany, your centre will be ready. Please, ensure you learn very well, because you will come back to train our local mechanics.

“Capacity to maintain the automobile 74/we have in Nigeria is so low, as, our auto engineers, technicians and mechanics are getting out of job, because of technological changes. Ands the era of trial-and-error in auto maintenance is gone; everything is knowledge-based and Osun State is ready to empower, not only the indigenes, but all Nigerians willing to seek knowledge at the BIMI, Esa-Oke,” he added.

10  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Chibok girls: Outrage as police ban protests in Abuja on: 3-06-2014 06:41 AM

THE police, on Monday, banned protests over the kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Commissioner of Police in FCT, Mr Joseph Mbu, announced the ban at a news conference in Abuja, saying the protests were posing a serious security threat.

“Accordingly, protests on the Chibok girls are hereby banned with immediate effect,’’ Mbu said.

He said after a group, under the aegis of “Bring Back Our Girls,’’ protested on April 28, another group, “Release Our Girls,” emerged.

Mbu said information at the disposal of the command indicated that “dangerous elements’’ were about to hijack the protest, hence the ban.

“As the FCT police boss, I cannot fold my hands and watch this lawlessness. Information reaching us is that soon, dangerous elements will join groups under the guise of protest and detonate explosives aimed at embarrassing the government,’’ he said.

Mbu said a situation where the Fountain of Unity, venue of gathering for the protest, was being turned into a place for “cooking and selling’’ was embarrassing.

According to him, many diplomats live in that area of the territory.

He called on the people of the territory to encourage the security agencies in the war against terrorism and criminality, by appreciating the sacrifices they had made.

Asked whether the ban would not violate the freedom of expression and assembly, the commissioner said one person’s freedom should not affect that of another.

“People have been protesting over a month now…it is the issue of terrorism, it is not solved in one day.

“Then, when you continue to do it persistently, it becomes  nuisance to the government,’’ he said

The commissioner also announced the revocation of permits earlier issued for tinted glass vehicles in the territory.

“Yes, there is a period when permits were granted, but the recent security challenges have made the police authority to revisit the issue and have resolved to revoke same,” he said.

Meanwhile, the commissioner has redeployed all divisional police officers (DPOs) in the FCT and directed them to hand over to the next senior police officers in their respective divisions.

The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Altine Daniel, told newsmen that the decision was taken after the commissioner met with the DPOs on Monday.

Human rights lawyer activist, Festus Keyamo, on Monday, condemned the ban on protests in Abuja, over the kidnapped Chibok girls.

In a statement, he said “the statement credited to the FCT Commissioner of Police, banning all protests over the kidnap of the Chibok schoolgirls is unconstitutional, illegal, null and void.”

Also, former Minister of Education, Mrs Oby Ezekwesili, said the “Bring Back Our Girls” campaigners will go to court today, to seek a restraining order against the police.

On her Twitter handle on Monday, Ezekwesili said “the FCT Commissioner of Police has no power to ban peaceful assembly of any group of persons in the city.”

A leading human rights organisation in Nigeria, the Committee for Democracy and Rights of the People (CDRP), also condemned the action of the FCT Commissioner of Police.

In a statement signed by the action national coordinator of the group, Saka Waheed, it said the ban was unwarranted, condemnable, unconstitutional and antithetical to all democratic norms.

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Lagos State chapter, on Monday, said the Federal Government could go ahead with the ban it placed on protests over Chibok girls in Abuja if it had sufficient security reasons, but quickly added that it doubted such was the situation as obtained with mere peaceful rallies being done by Nigerians to express their concern regarding the abducted schoolgirls.

The state publicity secretary of the party, Mr Joe Igbokwe, said this in his reaction while speaking with the Nigerian Tribune on phone.

“I don’t think a mere peaceful protest where people come to make speech that the abducted schoolgirls should be released by Boko Haram could constitute security threat,” he said.

“If the government has sufficient reasons, they can go ahead with the ban. But I don’t think they have, they might just be playing pranks,” he added

Meanwhile, many Nigerians took to Twitter on Monday to condemn the ban on the protest as announced by the FCT police commissioner, while vowing that they would storm the venue of the rally to day to continue demanding the release of the abducted schoolgirls.

11  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Presidency disowns Australian Boko Haram negotiator on: 3-06-2014 06:39 AM

THE Presidency has nothing to do with Dr Stephen Davis, the Australian who was reported to be negotiating with Boko Haram insurgents to free the over 200 girls the terrorists abducted in Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State on April 14.

This is according to the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati, who denied government’s knowledge of the negotiation when the Nigerian Tribune sought to confirm the authenticity of the claims made by Dr Davis, published in the United Kingdom-based MailOnline.

Abati pointed out that the Defence Headquarters had already distanced the military from the purported negotiation, saying that the position of the presidency could not be different from the military because “the military is directly responsible for the operation and takes instructions from the president.”

According to the tabloid, Dr Davis had left his home in Perth to travel to Nigeria, after being recruited by President Goodluck Jonathan for his hostage negotiation expertise and Davis was now desperately trying to free the schoolgirls.

The medium reported that Dr Davis, a friend of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, had been working secretly in Nigeria for almost a month now, quoting the former Canon Emeritus at Coventry Cathedral in the UK, who moved back to Australia last year, to have said “I am encouraged by the progress.”

It added that he was asked to come to Nigeria after previously brokering a truce between violent rebels and the government in the Niger Delta in 2004.

MailOnline said in an email from Nigeria, the doctor revealed he had “ongoing contact” with the groups involved in the kidnapping in the North for seven years, adding that “this is a long process of building trust on both sides.”

The report further quoted him as “there are several groups to deal with, as the girls are held in several camps. This makes any thought of a rescue highly improbable. To attempt to rescue one group would only endanger the others.”

It noted that despite the difficulties of a rescue operation, Dr Davis remained hopeful that the schoolgirls would be freed, quoting him as saying, “everyday, there is the possibility of the release of the girls.”

According to the MailOnline, Dr Davis warned: “we must not endanger their lives any further,” noting that his recent negotiation work has been to forward military position in the North-East in recent days.

Sect has no basis in Islam —OIC
The Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) has described members of the Boko Haram sect now wreaking havoc in parts of the country as outlaws, whose activities have no basis in Islam.

The Secretary General of the Organisation of Islamic Conference, Mr Eyad Ameen Madani, told State House correspondents after leading officials of the conference for a meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Monday, that the organisation condemned the terrorists and expressed its willingness to assist Nigeria in any way to fight terror.

Asked about their mission at the Villa, he said “we are here primarily to listen to His Excellency on his vision about the OIC in the years to come.

“We are also here to express our solidarity with Nigeria in facing up to this terrorist organisation and to condemn the terrorist acts they have been committing, we are also here to show our condolences to Nigerian people and to the families of those who have been affected.

“The OIC has already issued statements and we are very clear that these people are outlaws. What they do is criminal acts that have nothing to do with Islam, Islamic teaching, the religion and history of Islam, the culture and civilisation of Islam and we should identify them for what they are, a terrorist group.”

The OIC scribe said the conference would be willing to assist Nigeria morally and ethically and whichever way the country wanted it to intervene.

“The OIC is not a religious organisation. It is a political organisation made up of 57 member states with each state represented as a government. Nigeria is a member of the OIC as government of Nigeria. But it has to express the concern about the misuse of Islam. That is morally and ethically.

“We can also be and we are willing to do that, if our brothers here will like us to do that, to organise interfaith dialogue. We feel that there is a lot to be said about the veracity of these claims and to show the many aspects in similarity in living together between not only Christians and Muslims, but between all faiths and convictions,” he said.

Also speaking, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Aminu Wali, who led them to the Villa, reiterated the OIC’s expression of support and understanding with Nigeria over the current security situation in the country.

He added that it was a demonstration to Nigerians that the Islamic organisation was willing to help the country to overcome its present challenges.

According to the minister, “the fact that the OIC has expressed its position of support and understanding in these areas of our challenges goes to show that they are playing their roles to support any of its members states that have any problem, be it socially or economically, religiously or otherwise.”

12  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Some APC leaders sympathetic to Boko Haram, Fani-Kayode alleges •As he dumps par on: 3-06-2014 06:37 AM

FORMER Minister of Aviation, Mr Femi Fani-Kayode, has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of pursuing an Islamic agenda, even in the running of the party and playing politics with the issue of kidnapped girls in Chibok, Borno State.

Fani-Kayode made this known in a press statement issued on Monday to formally announce his intention to dump the party.

Announcing his return to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Fani-Kayode said “I wish to inform the general public that as of today (Monday), June 2, 2014, I have left the APC and gone back to the PDP. I wish the APC well in all their endeavours but as of today, we have parted ways forever and my spirit has left them.”

The former minister noted that against a crooked statement issued by the spokeperson of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, he had “declared for the APC in June last year in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, well before the party was registered by INEC.  I formally joined the party amidst  great fanfare  on February 7, 2014.”

According to Fani-Kayode, “I have stated these facts and set the record straight due to the fact that Alhaji Mohammed, the spokesman of the APC, had the effontry to say in an interview with Premium Times magazine earlier today that I was never a member of the APC and that I never joined them formally.

“He also went further to say that if I had been a member of the APC, the party would have sanctioned me for expressing my opposition to the idea of a Muslim/Muslim ticket.

“The truth is that Mohammed is a coward. If he wanted to know the truth, he and those that sent him to issue the statement could have called and asked me. He ought to have done his homework before speaking out.

“I was not only a member of APC, but I was also a leader of that party and a foundation member. Yet, once I joined I began to see things as they really were. I have never been and will never be part of a cult and the fact that people like Mohammed and those he represents within the APC are not comfortable with any form of admonition or criticism from senior party members like me speaks volumes.”

Revealing APC’s relationship with Boko Haram and its Islamic agenda, he said all steps being taken by the party, whether by the composition of its structure or its impending presidential candidacy, connoted one cleverly pursuing an Islamic agenda.

According to Fani-Kayode, the party, which has continuosly shown sympathy for Boko Haram, “is clearly purusing an Islamic agenda.

“I am a devout and committed Christian and I cannot remain in a party where a handful of people that have sympathies for Boko Haram and that have a clear Islamic agenda are playing a leading role.

“This is made all the more untenable when some of those people are working hard silently and behind the scenes to impose a Muslim/Muslim ticket on the party for the presidential election next year.

“I believe that religion ought to play no part in politics but a situation where members of the Christian faith are not treated as equals and where the all the substantive positions of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party are made up of almost exclusively Muslims is unacceptable to me.”

Before his revelation, Fani-Kayode hinted that he had sought audience with several top echelons of the party to solve most of the issues raised in his statement.

He said he went the extra mile to explain the situation because he believed some of the leaders of the party shared his views.

“I have raised these issues privately with virtually every key party leader, including most of the governors but nothing has changed.

“In fairness to members of the party, there are many leaders within its ranks who share my views and who are also opposed to the religious agenda, but I am not prepared to stay and fight from within, because the very presence of any closet Haramites on the same political platform as me is something that I find utterly repugnant,” he noted.

Reacting to Fani-Fakayode’s claim, the APC spokesman, Alhaji Mohammed, said he stood by his words.

According to him, “I stand by my words that Fani-Kayode was never a leader of my party. He couldn’t have been a leader, because he was never a member of any organ of leadership in the party, either at national or state level.

“That he had access to leaders of the party would not make him a leader, because he was not involved in any leadership level of the party.”

On the issue of Muslim-Muslim ticket, Alhaji Mohammed said: “we are a national party and any party pursuing Muslim-Muslim or Christian-Christian agenda at this point in Nigeria will fail.”

13  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / ‘We don’t need foreign assistance to solve Chibok problem- Chimamanda Adichie on: 3-06-2014 06:24 AM

While speaking at the 2014 Hay Festival for Literature and Arts in Wales recently, award-winning Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Adichie expressed her reservations on the foreign assistance Nigeria is receiving on the missing chibok school girls. Adichie said the foreign government should focus on solving their own problems and leave Nigeria to deal with theirs
“Now we have American drones helping us in this forest and even the French have sent in people – shouldn’t they be fixing their own economy? We can solve our own damn problems. I’m sure that there are hunters in that area who know that forest very well. Why haven’t they been used? Why aren’t we depending on them? What we need is a better equipped military, a better trained military. We don’t need Americans to send people in” she said.
She appreciated the efforts of Michelle Obama and all other international stars in spreading the word about the missing Chibok girls, an action she said made the Nigerian government sit up and act.
“It was very much a grassroots social media Nigerian campaign. The fact that westerners are sharing in something started locally is fine with me. I recognize that the campaign made a difference. People paid attention and then the (Nigerian) government had to sit up a little bit.” she added

14  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / The Insincerity In Government Automotive Policy on: 3-06-2014 06:19 AM

The great enemy of clear language is insincerity. When there is a gap between one’s real and one’s declared aims, one turns, as it were, instinctively to long words and exhausted idioms, like a cuttlefish squirting out ink.
~ George Orwell
To govern a people is not necessarily rocket science for as long as the government sincerely seeks the best interests of those it purportedly wishes to govern. Nigerians generally are the easiest to govern with simple, almost basic needs and requirements, from their government.

The continuous deceit and lies by the ruling elite, either military or civilians, have created a huge gap between the rulers and the ruled; therefore the citizens of Nigeria have come to see the various governments as a bunch of liars, while those in government have also not helped matters. Issues within and policies of government at all levels are carried out in the fashion of a secret cult; nobody outside the few privileged elites know exactly what goes on within government, therefore rumour mongering thrives and since those juicy rumours mostly fill up the void left by the over secretive government (and as the saying goes, “life abhors a vacuum”), the rumours, hearsay and innuendos help to serve the people’s curiosity.

Democracy has a new meaning in Nigeria...
To our politicians, it means soliciting for votes every four years. The voters (electorates) are mere guinea pigs to be danced to and danced with during jamborees called electioneering campaigns, after which they are quickly forgotten and dispensed with by the almighty political kingmakers until the next elections are around the corner.

The Nigerian democracy is never about debates and exchange of ideas nor are the governed allowed a say in how their affairs are run. In fact, the government expects the “poor serfs” to be grateful for having the opportunity to have few roads patched and boreholes dug in their community. The Nigerian democracy is a four year ritual where huge and empty promises are made with no intention whatsoever of fulfilling them in anyway.

Recently it came to light that The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday 2nd October, 2013 finally gave its nod for the new national automotive policy. The government said it was disturbed by the whopping annual N550 billion spent importing cars and it therefore took the decision to grant approval to the new policy that has been on the drawing board for over nine months.

The new development is also expected to revive, expand and develop the petrochemical and metal/steel sectors. The proponents of the policy claim it will also see the return of the tyre manufacturing industry to profitability ways to support the automotive sector.

To the uninitiated, one could easily jump for joy. But hold on, don’t celebrate yet: let us go down memory lane.

In the early 1970s, in the pursuit of what was said to be the “import substitution policy” of the Federal Government then (a policy that was mouthed to ultimately obliterate the importation of vehicles into the country; which this new automotive policy seems to be echoing), Volkswagen and Peugeot plants were started in Lagos and Kaduna respectively. These two government sponsored CKD assembly plants were followed by the FGN establishing four commercial vehicles’ assembly plants in Ibadan (Leyland), Enugu (Mercesdes-Benz ANAMMCO), Kano (National Trucks Manufacturers) and Bauchi (Steyr Nigeria) in 1976.

Also, agreements were signed in the early ’80s for the establishment of five minibus assembly plants (Mitsubishi, Nissan, Peugeot, Isuzu and Mazda), but just as the previously established plants were going out of business (barring Peugeot in Kaduna and anemic versions of Mercedes-Benz ANAMMCO in Enugu and Steyr in Bauchi) these newly planned plants didn’t commence operations. In 2010, a local entrepreneur, Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company Ltd in partnership with a Chinese automaker commissioned Nigeria’s latest automobile assembly plant.

Let us ask ourselves a basic question: who was consulted before Aganga and his group of wise-men came up with this policy? When or where were the exhaustive debates held to get the buy in of stakeholders? Aren’t we merely embarking on another wild goose chase?

Let’s be clear, having in place a good policy is always the best in the long run, but government is supposed to be for the people and by the people. You can’t shave my head in my absence, can you?

A cursory examination of the failed historic import substitution policy may help us to appreciate the inherent emptiness of the new automotive policy. Before such an ambitious policy can be successful, certain fundamentals must be in place: One, the requisite human capital, with the relevant automotive mechatronics capacity to engage the electronics and computing technologies that define the modern automobiles–ought to be in place. This vital condition is presently lacking because of the generational systemic failure of our educational/technical training programme. Nigerian universities and colleges of technology are still using totally obsolete curricula (like carburettor technology that’s been outdated for over two decades now) to teach our undergraduates specializing in automotive engineering.

Two, in most countries where vehicles are manufactured, the assembly plants only constitute the zenith of an industrial pyramid of raw materials processors and parts-making industries. The National Automotive Council, the nation’s statutory body that’s laden with regulating activities and standards in the industry has less than 100 registered local automotive parts/products producers/manufacturers (and this includes manufacturers of basic seat covers, seat belts and other primary and less complicated components). And insofar as the import substitution policy of yore failed because these feeder industries were non-existent, it’s almost certain that the present ruse of a policy too will fail, as laudable as it seems on paper.

Three, it’s indeed an irony that unlike most auto making countries where basic electrical components like the air conditioning compressors, alternators, starters, etc, are refurbished locally and re-used in vehicles, the unholy alliance between incessant power outages, dearth of investment funds and almost a total lack of skilled manpower will starve the enunciated policy to the grave of its dead and delusional predecessor-policy.

Finally we have the small matter of extreme power failure and lack of basic infrastructure. If the tyre manufacturers abandoned Nigeria for neighboring countries of Ghana etc, in the past, has anything changed to warrant their returning to Nigeria?

It has become the tradition for supposed “technocrats” and political appointees to bring up bogus policies with no clear road map and measurable timelines, knowing that even when they fail, which they ultimately do, nobody will call them to question and none ever accounts for their failed stewardship.

Is it not paradoxical that the same administration that increased the number of years of automobiles imported to Nigeria from 10 years old to 15 years is the same government that has “reasoned” out this utopic policy? Is this not a major policy somersault?

I must state at this juncture that the government’s claim that N550bn was expended annually to import vehicles into the country seems a bit tall to me; if one assumes that the average price of imported automobiles (eighty five percent of which are used vehicles) is N2.5m and when one divides N550bn with N2.5m one will get a picture of 200,000 vehicles annually imported into the country! Something is totally wrong between this outrageous claim and the realistic picture of just over 100,000 vehicles averagely imported into this country annually.

Something is not just right about this new national automotive policy and the federal government led by President Jonathan needs to step it down until more exhaustive debates and national consultations with serious stakeholders is held in an atmosphere of genuine debate and policy review sessions where stakeholders can table suggestions on how to create the industrial eco-system that will help articulate the admirable objectives enunciated in the presently presumptuous policy.

For a country that intends to produce automobiles, there ought to be a viable steel industry but we all know the sad story of Ajaokuta, Itakpe and Aladja Steel rolling mills. Billions of dollars spent and completely mismanaged. Not a soul has been brought to book to account for the shenanigans. The money expended on those mills have not only been lost to the wind, there is nothing on ground to show for it, neither is anything been done to bring back these companies.

A serious country that intends to manufacture cars will also have an active tyre making industry fueled by local or imported rubber production. What happened to those rubber trees in the old Bendel area? As a growing child, I was serenaded with the commercials of Michelin and Dunlop tyres, among others. Where are they today? But our government, instead of starting from the base, intends to build a skyscraper from the top.

By July 1st, the cost of clearing a car will increase by over 70%. Before the initial tariff increase of March this year, a 2004 model vehicle was cleared at 250,000 and market price was 1.4m , now it’s cleared at a cost of N400,000 and the increment passed on to final consumers.

The federal government would do well to work on a plan to make car manufacturers (i.e. Toyota with a huge market in Nigeria) to establish assembly plants in Nigeria with a high percentage of local content. Nigerian engineers and other professionals would not only benefit in the massive number of jobs that would be created but in the long run, like Korea, we should begin to build home made cars to compete side by side with foreign ones. It is now time to revive the moribund steel rolling mills and prosecute those who mismanaged them. Also, make the environment conducive for tyre manufacturers and others who had hitherto fled, to come back to Nigeria.

The utopian picture as being painted by Aganga is nothing but another white elephant project, designed to line up a few pockets and emasculate genuine businessmen and women amidst the euphoria of an empty and cacophonous policy that is doomed to fail from the outset, while sounding the final death knell on the fast disappearing middle class and plunging them into further obscurity and economic chasm.

You don’t legislate production, you can only encourage manufacturers to produce by making the environment conducive for production. That is the surest way to create jobs, not the current ill thought out and knee jerk automotive policy.

This government should stop inflicting pains on Nigerians. If a deity cannot improve my lot, why not let me remain just as I am?

These were the exact words of Ngofaka Iyo, a fisherman from Okrika in Ogu/Bolo local government area of Rivers state who allegedly killed his 92 year-old maternal grandmother .

Reason? The suspect accused his grandmother identified as Mrs Amachree , of being a witch, alleging that she had on several occasions attempted to take his life through witchcraft.

He said: “Each time I confronted her, she would plead with me to forgive her that she won’t repeat it. This has been going on for a while and I have been enduring it. But the high point of the experience was in April this year. That night, I was being stranguled in the dream . I tried to shout for help but could not. At a point I started foaming in the mouth . As life was going out of me, I saw my grand mother standing over me and saying I must die. Somehow, I managed to overcome the oppression . Immediately I regained consciousness, I rushed to her room and pointed a torch at her. To my shock she was awake! She started raining curses on me, asking why I refused to die. That was when I picked a broom and stared hitting her . She tried to take the broom from me and in the process, I pushed her and she hit her head on the wall and her ankle on an iron burglary protector. She   sustained injuries on her head, hand and leg from which she bled and died”, he stated .

He lied- suspect’s sister

However, Ngofaka’s account was discredited by one of the deceased’s children, Augusta Agienboye, 52. Agienboye told operatives that after the act, the suspect’s girl friend ran to her, informing her that Ngofaka had inflicted machete cuts to his grandmother.

Augusta was said to have reported the matter to the Joint Task Force,JTF station in Bolo, following which Ngofaka was apprehended and taken to the JTF check point, where he managed to escape.

But on May 14, 2014, Agienboye said she received a call at about 5pm, where the caller informed that Ngofaka had been rearrested at a diesel dump site in Bolo town b y policemen attached to Ogu/Bolo Police..

At the station his statement reportedly contradicted his earlier claim of using a broom on his grandmother. Family sources told Sunday vanguard that : “ When he realised that the law had caught up with him, he began to reconstruct his earlier statement by adding that he also threatened mama with a stick but didn’t hit her. He also added that he tried to revive the deceased after listening to the counsel of his girlfriend when he saw her in the pool of blood and took her to a treatment centre but didn’t have 5,000 Naira demanded at the centre. To ascertain   his claim, operatives from the Homicide section reportedly visited the scene of the murder . But they were said to have not found the supposed killer stick . Commenting on the arrest, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police,Mr Tunde Ogunsakin, said the command would conduct a post moterm test to verify the suspect’s statement and if found culpable at the end of investigation, he would be charged to court.

16  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Man beats son to death for stealing N1,000 on: 2-06-2014 05:10 PM

Shock and disbelief could best describe the expression on the faces of residents of Omitola street in Agege area of Lagos, when Saturday Vanguard visited Thursday , to ascertain the circumstance that led to the death of a 12-year-old boy.

The guardians of the boy allegedly beat him to death just as a man in Oregun, Ikeja, was also alleged to have beaten the son to death for stealing N1,000.

The 12-year old boy who was identified as Onyedikachi Mbanozo, was reportedly brought from the village by Mr and Mrs Paul Obiefule, last year, with a promise to send him to school.

The couple reportedly kept to their promise by enrolling him in Holy Trinity Primary School, Agege, where he started from primary one.Information gathered from residents revealed that Mbanozo was allegedly often beaten at the slightest provocation by his guardians. He was said to have told some residents that he would leave for the village when he finished his primary school education. He never lived to see his dream come true. Life was snuffed out of him Tuesday, after one of the routine batterings.

Paul Obiefule
Ironically , he died on a day children all over the world were being celebrated.

He was hungry and sought to eat at about 1pm. It was to be his first meal of the day. His guardians allegedly pounced on him in the process of which he slumped and died.

Residents told Saturday Vanguard during the visit that when the couple discovered that Mbanozo was dead, they hid his corpse under the bed. Sensing danger that all was not well , curious neighbours were said

to have asked after Mbanozo.

A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity told Saturday Vanguard that: “At first , the woman told us that the boy fainted and was rushed to the hospital. Later she said he had been discharged and was inside. When we insisted on seeing him , they said he was sleeping. Some people suspected all was not well with the boy when the the couple still insisted that the boy was still sleeping the following day. It was when we insisted on seeing the boy that she opened up, disclosing that Mbanozo was dead and that her husband had gone to get a car that would take the corpse to the village. While we were waiting for her husband to return, he called his wife on the phone and told her to pack her things out of their apartment and leave with their three children. We stopped her from packing and followed her to a beer parlour where her husband was waiting for her and contacted the police.

Confirming the arrest, spokes person for the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide said:“ At about 2.30pm on Tuesday, the Divisional Police Officer in-charge of Pen- Cinema Division , while on patrol with his policemen, received an anonymous  call that a man by name Paul Obiefule ‘m’ of No.22, Omitola Street, Agege Lagos and his wife had beaten a boy living with them named Onyedikachi Mbanozo ‘m’ aged 12years to death. On receipt of the information police patrol vehicles moved to the scene and brought the suspects and the deceased to the station for a detailed investigation. Case is currently under investigation at Pen Cinema Division’

In a similar incident on Monday at about 4 am, one Bright whose surname was unknown and who resided at No. 6 Olarewaju Street, Oregun, Ikeja was allegedly hit with iron belt by his father for stealing N1,000. The boy was rushed to Divine Private Hospital on Lawal Street Oregun where he was confirmed dead. The body has been deposited at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital mortuary where autopsy would be carried out.

17  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / We prefer CBT Examined Students - JAMB on: 2-06-2014 05:08 PM

Bwari (FCT) – The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has suggested the adoption of Computer Based Test (CBT) in the conduct of public examinations to improve the standard of education .

This is contained in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja by Mr Fabian Gabriel, Head, Public Relations Unit of JAMB.

The statement said that JAMB was determined to give equal opportunity to candidates who are desirous of qualitative education.

It also described CBT as the best mode of e-examination, especially in the conduct of such examinations in prisons.

“The Board conducted the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination on CBT mode for 250 prisoners.

“This was administered to prisoners in Ikoyi and Kaduna, who were at the verge of completing their jail terms.

“The Board has deployed its systems and computers to the prisoners for the examination to be conducted without hitches.

“The examination at the prisons is part of our resolve to meet global expectations of reformative institution and remolding of repented prisoners to pursue their educational careers,’’ the statement said.

It said that the conduct of examinations for prisoners through CBT was part of the Board’s corporate social responsibility based on the peculiar nature and confinement of inmates.

The statement said that the CBT examination which started on Saturday May 17, would end on Monday, June 2.

It urged all Nigerians to support the drive to revamp the nation’s education, while assuring that there was no going back on the full blown CBT, come 2015.

Also the African Pride Empowerment Empire, an NGO, on Saturday commended the Joint Matriculation Examination Board (JAMB) for introducing the Computer-Based Test (CBT) to check examination malpractice in Nigeria.

The organisation’s president, Mr Godwin Uwagbale, gave the commendation while speaking on the sidelines of its reach out to students campaign in some schools in Lagos.

Uwagbale said the introduction would to a large extent curb the prennial problem of examination malpractice and advised students to shun it to attain desirable intellectual heights in society.

He said that examination malpractice militated against academic progress as it always made children less intelligent and to display false high grades.

“No developed country in the world can attain any form of advantage through examination malpractice, it is only those without vision that subscribe to it,” he said.

According to Uwagbale, the current JAMB’s CBT is a bold step in curbing examination malpractice.

“I commend JAMB for introducing the CBT to complement the paper-based test which has been an easy prey to malpractice.

“So far, from what we have seen, the computer-based tests centres are not places for malpractice, it is a  plus for the board,” he said.

He noted that though there were some challenges in the computer-based exercise, other examination boards should borrow a leaf from JAMB.

Uwagbale urged parents and teachers to discourage their children and students from getting involved in the menace before it destroyed the country’s educational standard

Most of the 30 players currently in the Super Eagles’ camp in Philadelphia, United States, are reportedly waiting anxiously to find out if they will be in the final squad for the Brazil 2014 World Cup, which kicks off on June 12.

Of the players in camp, only a few, reportedly 12, are sure of packing their bags for the trip to Brazil.

Some of the players said to be sure of their positions in the team are Mikel Obi, Ogenyi Onazi, Vincent Enyeama, Elderson Echiejile, Austin Ejide, Efe Ambrose, Godwin Oboabona, Kenneth Omeruo, Victor Moses, Emmanuel Emenike, Ahmed Musa and Victor Obinna Nsofor.

Others, a source close to Coach Stephen Keshi, had from May 25 to Sunday to convince the technical crew that they can contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s quest for success in Brazil.

“Although the players are working hard to impress the coaches, they are also cautious to avoid any injury that would the them out of the World Cup.

“It is a healthy atmosphere in the camp, but beneath you can feel the anxiety among the players,” he said.

Keshi at the weekend disclosed that he already knows his final 23-man squad, but would wait till today before unveiling the list.

The Super Eagles drew 2-2 with Scotland in an international friendly in London last week with Uche Nwofor and Michael Uchebo scoring for the African champions after they fell behind twice.

After announcing the chosen players today, Keshi’s team will meet Greece tomorrow in another international friendly and also meet the US national team on June 7 before proceeding to Campinas, their World Cup team base in Brazil.
