The Goodluck Jonathan administration on Friday moved against Nigerian media by preventing the circulation of some newspapers and harassing vendors in a nationwide crackdown that has been likened to the dark days of the military era. Armed soldiers and operatives of the State Security Service on Friday morning raided distribution vans, seized and damaged copies of newspapers nationwide.

Major newspapers were affected by the apparently coordinated operation. There were random forceful seizures of newspapers, at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, while distribution vans were stopped and searched in different parts of the country.
Distributors said wrappers of The Punch newspaper were stripped off with the cover of some copies damaged, while several copies of The Nation, Leadership and Daily Trust were confiscated.

One of Punch circulation officials, who witnessed the situation at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, said that a group of heavily armed soldiers stormed the cargo unit of the airport in a search of an undisclosed newspaper.

The soldiers, who arrived in a commando style at about 4:35am in a bus used to convey Vanguard newspapers to the airport, vigorously began to search all papers on ground.

The leader of the team reluctantly said, "Mr Man, We have screened your paper, so leave us to do our job." He was always on phone to communicate the update to their boss, and said, “It is an order from above.”

In Nigeria, order from above is a term used to describe instructions handed down from the Presidency or from some top government officials.

On the website of the Leadership, the paper said, “Soldiers on Friday intercepted and destroyed newspaper copies meant for the North-West region at the Kaduna tollgate. The copies booked for South-South and South-East regions were also seized by the soldiers.”

According to the newspaper, the soldiers and SSS operatives were also acting on ‘orders from above.’

It is most unfortunate that international media have picked up on the narcissistic ramblings of a Ghanaian spiritualist who evidently prefers enriching his own coffers and embellishing his own name to the wellbeing and reputation of his nation.
I am referring to Nana Kwaku Bonsam, touted to be Ghana’s foremost spiritualist, who haphazardly decided to besmirch Ghana’s name before the eyes of the world by claiming his ‘devilish powers’ are behind the current injury of Portugal star and arguably the world’s best player, Cristiano Ronaldo.
According to reports, Bonsam claims to have conjured a special powder from his gods which was placed around an image and caricature of Ronaldo, rendering his present injury untreatable by conventional medics and leaving his World Cup hopes tattered.
My grouse with this report, apart from its clear ludicrousness, is the impression it will undoubtedly create in the minds of people towards Ghana – as a nation crawling in ‘fetish priests’ with ‘black magic’.
With such reports being bandied about, if Ghana excels in the tournament, some will unscrupulously attribute it to some ‘juju’ at work. If the Black Stars do overcome Portugal come June 26th, people will unfortunately play up the influence of devilish power rather than the skill, determination and prowess of our boys.
My question to Kwaku is this - if indeed you are so ‘powerful’, why can’t you empower the current Ghanaian squad to face their opponents? What is your business with CR7 alone when there are plenty of other stars capable of inflicting defeat on Ghana? What of Mesut Özil or Thomas Müller from Germany’s formidable squad in Ghana’s group of death?
The regrettable saga brings to mind the tale of a team in India that was banned after the ridiculous score line led officials to investigate the use of ‘charms’ by the team. Perhaps Bonsam is furtively advocating for a similar sanction for Ghana! I am expecting Appiah and Ghanaian officials to debunk this report and disgrace this self-styled magician – unless Bonsam really is the Black Star’s ‘spiritual advisor’ as he has previously boasted.
If this is the case, Ghana deserves nothing more than the ridicule and perhaps reprimand that will accompany such superstitious garbage.
On a related note, isn’t this the same witchdoctor who visited the Vatican City a fortnight ago with the expressed purpose of reporting Nigerian Prophet T.B. Joshua to Pope Francis? If there is anyone Bonsam should destroy or inflict injury upon, it should be Joshua since they are operating with evidently opposite forces. Kwaku is ‘powerful’ enough to spiritually inflict Ronaldo thousands of miles away in Portugal but can’t travel a few miles across the border to wreak vengeance on his Nigerian adversary T.B. Joshua??? Nonsense. I cannot but conclude that Bonsam is nothing more than a rambling popularity seeker who is using Cristiano’s predicament to advertise his counterfeit cures, unashamedly tainting the name of his nation in the process. Ghana is greater than any individual. If we do well in Brazil, it will be due to skill, hard work and unwavering commitment to God and the mantra of fair play, not the sacrificed dogs of a scarred herbalist whose mouth is bigger than his means.

Etcetera, in his latest post is dissing Nigerian gospels songs and their artistes. Do you agree with him?
Just like our Nigerian pastors, Nigerian gospel songs cannot lead you to Christ. 
Nigerian gospel songs are not spiritually uplifting. They are mostly about the things of the flesh, about riches and fame. The simple use of religious terms and phrases here and there is not enough to lead anyone to Christ. I dare you to go to any Nigerian gospel musician’s website and see if you will find a simple plan of salvation. You won’t. 
Most of the songs being sold to the public as “Christian songs” are religious rubbish. Most of them are songs without the truth, Church'ianity and not Christianity. Because most of the Nigerian gospel musicians are themselves not Christ-like. They carry as many babes as the worldly hip hop stars. Fornicate on Saturday night and minister to you in church on Sunday morning, tasking you to wave your handkerchief in the name of the lord. 
Do not be deceived my brothers and sisters, God is no author of confusion. Most of the people who sing and produce these gospel songs are not living in Christ. Today in Nigeria, we hear of pastors and gospel artistes involved in sex scandals and visiting native doctors. You may argue that we should focus on the music and not the singer, forgetting that music generally is a very powerful force that has a way of breaking down barriers. And the same powerful force can be tainted with negative lyrics and ungodly lifestyle that can pierce through the hearts of the listeners and reshape their values.
 Most of these gospel songs are written in a fashion that is strange to the principles of Christianity. Gospel singers and pastors are now covering themselves in glory. Dining with politicians who evidently display everything the Bible condemns. The Bible says in James 1:27 or 2 Peter 2:20, that the world taints and makes impure. So as a gospel artiste, God commands that you cannot live in sin like men of the world. You cannot live like the worldly musicians. If your music sounds worldly, seems worldly, and promoted like a worldly music, then it is not gospel. When you glorify anything other than God in your music, it is called idolatry. And you are giving Satan a great satisfaction.
Satan loves all the religious songs that don’t mention the truth of God’s word. So, beware brethren, all this wishy-washy, ear-tickling and worldly gospel songs won’t take you anywhere near Christ.
At this juncture, my brothers and sisters in the lord, I rest my case. Just like Apostle Paul says in Galatians 4:16: “I am therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth. So before you condemn me with you comments, remember the Bible says in 1st Chronicles 16:22, “Touch not my anointed, and do my prophets no harm.” Amen

Few days ago, a sad Cossy Orjiakor took to Twitter to expose her tenant who she says is a feared cultist and has been giving her sleepless nights. The tenant owed her rent and had slapped her when she went to ask for her money. Cossy told Punch:
“I am supposed to be making N2.6m every year from my property but all I have seen since this year is N100, 000. It is so sad. When you make investment and you are not seeing the profit, it can be sad. The man is even from Cotonou. His wife was the one that came to rent the apartment. They always fight in this neighbourhood. People here are scared to talk about them. But I am not scared. They are all in Aye fraternity. 
I gave them notice to quit and pack out of my house since February. The first issue I had with this particular tenant was when the wife came and insulted me saying that I was dating her husband. People advised me to give them six months grace which I did. The day I gave them the notice, they came and started shouting at me. It was eight months ago. 
I went to meet him few days ago to go and meet my agent and to let us know if he was still interested in renewing his rent. His cult friend slapped me in the process. They believe that when they intimidate me, I won’t be able to tell them to pay their rents as such; they would be staying in my house free of charge,” she said.

The individuals may go pale and sweaty, feel dizzy with “the spins,” nauseous, and may even start vomiting. This is most commonly followed by the immediate desire to lie down. Greening out is not a very common side effect of smoking marijuana, but it is much more likely to occur if a person has been drinking alcohol before they start smoking. However, when an individual smokes marijuana before they drink alcohol, the effect is not the same.

Overdoing It
Using alcohol and marijuana in combination is more likely to make the individual overuse both substances. It is common for an individual to experience the effects of marijuana more severely when they have already have alcohol in their system. Although “greening out” is not life-threatening, the effect of overdoing alcohol — alcohol poisoning — surely can kill you. Using both substances can make the individual drink beyond their tolerance and therefore be more likely to experience alcohol poisoning. According to Northeastern University, marijuana has an antiemetic effect, meaning that it makes it more difficult for the body to vomit. Normally this side effect is non-consequential, and it can even be beneficial in cancer patients who use medical marijuana because they have trouble keeping food down. However, in the case of alcohol poisoning, vomiting is the body’s way of expelling the excess alcohol. If a person is unable to properly vomit, they are more likely to choke on their vomit or succumb to the effects of alcohol poisoning.


Intensified Highs are Not Always a Good Thing
Alcohol is a depressant and slows down the central nervous system. Marijuana also slows the body down. Using them concurrently will magnify the effects of both, but how is highly unpredictable. Having alcohol in your blood can also potentially cause your body to absorb the THC faster. Based on information from Australia’s National Cannabis Prevention and Information Centre (NCPIC), in vulnerable people, the combination can produce psychotic symptoms such as panic, anxiety, or paranoia. Alcohol is known to have a very unpleasant side effect of making you “black out.” New studies are just beginning to show the detrimental effects of marijuana use on memory. It can disrupt the activity in the hippocampus, the area of the brain that controls memory. When used together, it can seriously fog an individual’s mind, making them more susceptible to dangerous situations such as being less able to look after their belongings and more likely to be unable to negotiate safe sex.

Unknown Effects
The separate effects of alcohol and marijuana use on the body are pretty much fully documented. Not as much is known about the combined effects. According to data fromNortheastern University, these can vary from person to person. Some people can get sick and pass out, and others will say they had the time of their life and can’t wait to do it again next weekend. When used together, the likelihood of having a bad reaction increases significantly, according to the NCPIC. Mixing alcohol with any substance, legal or not, can intensify the side effects and create negative interactions.

Justice Kudirat Jose of the Lagos High Court, Ikeja, on Friday, June 6, 2014, suspended further hearing in the $1.69million scam case involving suspected serial fraudster, Fred Ajudua, till September 24, 2014, to allow for the determination of the accused person’s appeal, challenging the court’s refusal of his bail application.

Ajudua is asking the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division to upturn Justice Jose’s decision to refuse him bail.  In the notice of appeal, he insisted that he needed urgent medical attention that would not be possible while in prison. He contended that the lower court was biased in not granting his bail application.

At the resumed hearing of the case on Friday, EFCC counsel, Oluwemimo Ogunde, SAN, argued on point of law against the ruling of Justice Jose at the last court sitting on May 23, ordering the EFCC to call witnesses in the on going trial of Ajudua, despite the pending application by the defence for stay of proceedings in view of its application before the appellate court.

Ogunde stated that, the position of law concerning the lower court in a matter that has a pending application before a higher court was that, when "an application is before a higher court, a lower court cannot silence a higher court and continue trial.”

But Ajudua's counsel, Olalekan Ojo, argued that the court cannot overrule itself.

However, Ogunde countered that, "the prosecution is not here to argue if the court should overrule itself, neither are we here to argue the merit of the application but the position of the law. But if the court insists on the previous ruling, we will go ahead and call our witnesses and our witnesses are coming from abroad and it will be a waste of tax payers’ money to bring these witnesses only to discover that they are not needed".

After listening to the submissions of counsel, Justice Jose then ruled that trial will continue on September 24 and October 2, 2014, after the Court of Appeal would have taken a position on the application before it.

Ajudua and Charles Ovie are standing trial before Justice Jose for allegedly defrauding two Dutch businessmen of $1.69m.

The late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Abdullahi Bayero, was buried at exactly 6:15 P.M. Friday inside the Gidan Nasarawa Grave Yard, where four of his predecessors, Emirs Sarki Abbas, Sarki Aalhaji Abdullahi Bayero, Sir Muhammadu Sanusi and Sarki Muhammadu Inuwa had also been buried.

Thousands of Kano residents of various social classed trooped out to pay their last respects to the revered Royal Father who ruled Kano for about 51 years.

Vice President Namadi Sambo led the Federal Government delegation, which arrived in Kano late in the morning.

Other dignitaries present for the occasion included the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal; former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar; National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki; the Inspector General of Police, MD Abubakar; Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State; Foreign Affairs Minister, Aminu Wali; former Governor of Kano State and Sardaunan Kano, Ibrahim Shekarau; Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Bala Mohammed; former Speaker of House of Representatives, Ghali Na’Abba; and other top government functionaries, as well as traditional rulers.
The Kano state Governor, Engr. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso narrowly missed the burial as he arrived in Kano about 30 minutes after the burial. 

Glowing tributes were also paid by those who were close to him.

Emir Bayero’s Chief driver, Alhaji Wada Abdulhamidu described the late Emir as a peaceful man.

“I came across the late Emir Ado Bayero when I was 10 years old,” he recalled.  “I have been working for him for over 60 years, now I am 70 years old. I have been the one driving him around. I was with him until he breathed his last. I was just like a younger brother to him. He does not discriminate. He is always calm and peaceful, slow to anger and he accommodates every opinion. He never looked down at people. You hardly can see anything that perturbed the Emir. Based on his teachings to us, we also exhibit friendliness and [togetherness] with people around us. He is a father of all. The Emir spent his last moment with members of his family after which he left to sleep in his room, but he could not wake up the next morning as he died peacefully in his sleep.”

For what looks like fear of been fired, the Delta State House of Assembly new speaker, Mr. Peter Onwusanya, has on behalf of the House disowned the controversial government land owned by the House. That land which was allegedly grabbed by Mrs. Sheila Roli Uduaghan, wife of Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, is where she is currently erecting a gigantic multi-billion naira private school.

Several sources in Delta state had accused the acclaimed “born again” Mrs. Sheila Roli Uduaghan, of using public funds to build a gigantic multi-billion naira private school on the government land, which originally belonged to the State House of Assembly for its proposed police station and a clinic. Yet, the First Lady grabbed the land without any atom of remorse.
 
According to our sources, including senior civil servants in the state, Mrs. Uduaghan’s school project, which comprises a nursery, primary, secondary and theological schools, is expected to open in September 2014. 
 
When asked on Thursday to give clarification on the controversial land during a press conference to mark the 3rd anniversary of the 5th Assembly of the Delta State House of Assembly, the new speaker, as a way of protecting his new job, is believed to have publicly disowned the land to the shock of his colleagues, when he said that the house “cannot confirm if the land belongs to them,” and he added that the issue of the land belongs to the government.
 
The speaker however, stated that such questions should be directed at the Ministry of Land, Survey and Urban Development. In his own words, “They say that there was a property, or there is a property owned by the Delta House of Assembly, that cannot be confirmed by this house, because the issue of land belonging to the government falls under the committee of Land and Survey. They are the appropriate quarter to get (an answer to) this information you seek. “
 
Reacting to the speaker’s comment, some members of the House said to SaharaReporters that the land, in fact, belongs to the House. The land, and which (body of government owns it) cannot be disputed, and they described the speaker’s action as “unfortunate,” and centers on his fear of the unknown.
 
“It’s not a hidden matter. Just ask workers in the Assembly, they will tell you the truth, that the land is ours. But because of the powers that be, the governor’s wife grabbed the land from the house with force,” one of the lawmakers had stated.
 
Also reacting to the speaker’s weak response to a question posed to him, a top management staff of the House, who carpeted the speaker, insisted to a SaharaReporters correspondent, “Don’t mind the speaker, he is afraid of been fired by those who made him a speaker. The land belongs to the Assembly. It would have been a different case, assuming the land in question is located elsewhere, but you can see with your two eyes, that the land sharing (is) a common boundary with the Assembly.

When questioned on the project some months ago, the state information Commissioner, Mr. Chike Ogeah, who is also protecting his job, had tactically dodged the question of the land dispute, and refused to mention the true owner of the project, and merely said, “Actually the project is a private one, and my duty is not to monitor individual private projects, but rather, government projects.”

Eight interlocutory appeals arising from the April 15th 2014 Court of Appeal decisions on the Anambra State Governorship election, petitions were this morning, struck out by the Supreme Court of Nigeria for being ‘patently academic and hypothetical’. The Court, presided over by Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad,  with six other justices at the resumed hearing of the appeals this morning, raised suo motu the propriety of continuing with the appeals having regard to the news broadcast they heard, the previous night, on the Nigerian Television Authority network news program, that the Tribunal in Awka had dismissed all the petitions.  The justices sought to know from the lawyers whether the apex court could still go on with the appeals, after the tribunal had rushed to deliver final judgments on the matters.

First to respond was Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN who appeared for Chief Willie Obiano. Obiano had 6 out of the 8 appeals. Ikpeazu agreed with the justices that the appeals had become academic even though his client would have wished that the appeals had gone on.

In his reaction, counsel to Senator Chris Ngige and All Progressives Congress (APC) who were cross-appellants in the matter, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN also agreed that the appeals and cross-appeal had been rendered academic and hypothetical. He also observed that what the tribunal did in Awka, by rushing to deliver judgments ahead of the Supreme Court sitting had brought to the fore the wisdom of the lawmakers in enacting paragraph 12(5) of Electoral Act which stipulates that all objections be heard together with the substantive action and a composite decision dealing with all issues duly embodied the judgment.

A similar view was expressed by the counsel to the APGA, Mr. Osita Nnadi. The major surprise in today’s proceedings was the appearance of the son of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mr. J.M.M Majiyagbe, who announced his  appearance for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Anambra State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof Onukaogu.

Judicial watchers were surprised that the lawyer who neither appeared at the tribunal, nor at the court of appeals, would suddenly appear for INEC at the Supreme Court which his mother heads. Sources close to the Anambra State Government indicate that the move to hire Mr. Majiyagbe as counsel for the INEC was ‘a smart move’ to compromise the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Miriam Aloma Mukthar, who by virtue of her office oversees all appeals that come to the Supreme Court.

It was learned that the scheme was hatched by Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, Mr. Ahmed Raji, SAN (a former INEC resident electoral commissioner), Mr. Pius Anyim, Secretary to the Federal Government, and the former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi.

It was also learned that Mr. Majiyagbe already had been paid the sum of N150 Million by the Presidency as part payment for the brief. With her son’s appearance in the matter, the CJN has been effectively bought over to the side of Presidency in the legal tussle. SaharaReporters learned that this strategy in which a lawyer close to the Obiano camp described it as a ‘matter stroke,’ was first deployed by the Governor, Olusegun Mimiko, of Ondo State, in the legal tussle arising from the Ondo State Governorship election in 2013.

After ‘winning’ at the election tribunal, and at the Court of Appeals, Governor Mimiko, on the advice of Chief Awomolo, and Ahmed Raji, had engaged the services of Mr. Majiyagbe as the INEC counsel in the appeal filed by Chief Olusola Oke, of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Like in the Anambra matter, Majiyagbe did not appear at the trial tribunal or at the court of appeals, before he suddenly emerged and became the INEC counsel at the Supreme Court.  As soon as the CJN’s son announced his appearance in the matter, the justices who sat in the panel, got the signal on where the pendulum of justice would swing.

Consequently, the appeals of Chief Sola Oke, and that of the former President of the NBA, Mr. Akeredolu, were summarily dismissed by the justices for being ‘bereft of any iota of merit.’

With this development, even though the interlocutory appeals in Anambra matter were struck out today for “being academic,” the signal has sent to the justices of Court of Appeals, and to the Supreme Court, who would very soon hear the APC and PDP appeals that the deal in the upcoming appeals have now been ‘sealed and delivered’ in favor of APGA and Obiano.

Ms. Miriam Aloma Murthar is due to retire as the CJN in mid-November 2014, by which time the Supreme Court would have determined the Anambra appeals.

Well I totally agree with her, but how many African men will allow their woman to be independent? Some married successful women have said, their men feel they get shoulder to shoulder with them in terms of cash, which is unacceptable. Some of these men have told their wives they regret letting them work in the first place, while some out rightly stop them from working at some point.

I know a lady who is very successful at what she does, but her husband always feels threatened by success. They have two kids together, and at a point, he stopped her from working. She stopped working and after 9 months she opted for a divorce because the man could not meet their needs.

Her kids stayed at home for days because they could not pay school fees, it was so bad that they had to sell one of their cars at a point and yet the man refused to let her go back to work.

Why do you think some men can’t stand women who try to live independent lives (a woman who does not ask too much from her husband)?
