2  Forum / The Buzz Central / Meet Nigeria's Youngest PhD Graduate: 24-Year-Old Olaoluwa on: 12-06-2014 03:40 PM

Anything is possible, once you set your heart towards it and pay the required price for the prize:

Olaoluwa Oluwadara, 24, has bagged a Ph.D degree in Mathematics at the just concluded 2012/2013 session convocation ceremony at the University of Lagos. Olaoluwa, who bagged his first and second degrees in Mathematics and Physics in 2007 and 2008 respectively from the Universite de Bangui in Central African Republic, graduated with a Cummulative Gross Point Average (CGPA) of 5.0 [first degree].

Olaoluwa’s feat supersedes that of Olabisi Adeyemi, a 26-year-old female who bagged a Ph.D with a CGPA of 4.98 in 2012 and Opeyemi Shodipe, 25 of Babcock University.

Speaking during the convocation, the Vice Chancellor of UNILAG, Professor Rahmon Bello, appealed to the President, Goodluck Jonathan,  to urgently intervene in the resolution of the over 10-month strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics and the Academic Staff Union of Colleges of Education of Nigeria (ASUCEON).

He appealed to the Federal Government to consider the demands of the striking lecturers to ensure that students of the polytechnics and colleges of education resumed their academic works as failure to do so would be putting the lives of the leaders of tomorrow in jeopardy.

He said the call has become urgent, "in the interest of students and to stem the falling standard of education and the increasingly degenerating infrastructure facilities worsened by the insurgency of Boko Haram."

4  Forum / Politics / US Lambasts Tinubu Over ‘Rig And Roast’ Threat on: 12-06-2014 08:56 AM

The United States of America has criticized leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu over his threat and warned Nigerian Politiicians ahead of the forthcoming elections in Ekiti and Osun states.
It would be recalled in May 2014, that Tinubu during a fund raising dinner organised by friends of Ekiti state Governor, John Kayode Fayemi threatened that 'APC will roast riggers at the elections'.
Tinubu who is set to make his intention of running for Presidency in 2015 elections in April while giving a speech at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Oyo State where he was given a doctoral degree in Management Science and decorated as the chancellor of the university also threatened the ruling party, Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) saying: "If You Mess Up In Ekiti And Osun, You Will See Our Reactions".
The governorship election in Ekiti State is expected to hold on June 21, while that of Osun is scheduled to hold on August 9.
But, the US in a statement entitled, ‘Countering the crisis of credibility’, by its Consul General, Jeff Hawkins, wondered why politicians keep making elections incredible in Nigeria.
Hawkins, who said the US had been watching the Nigeria political scene closely for about two years, warned Nigerian politicians against violence and disobedience to law.
The diplomat said, “The sponsorship of violence and intimidation, and the rhetorical threat thereof, are utterly unacceptable in a democratic society, and need to be expunged once and for all from the Nigerian polity and discourse. The US has been deeply troubled by some of the rhetoric that has been thrown around in recent weeks and months as these elections have drawn closer. It is perfectly acceptable, and even praiseworthy, to seek to defend your vote and that of your fellow citizens who share your support for a particular candidate.
“It is not, however, productive or reasonable to threaten violence, even when you perceive others have been guilty of misconduct. We were deeply troubled by the threat of “rig and roast” issued multiple times by a major political figure in recent weeks. Who benefits from that type of violent rhetoric, we wondered? And why would any ordinary Nigerian accept such provocative language, especially considering the history of post-election violence in Nigeria, and the truly horrific carnage that this country has been suffering at the hands of Boko Haram?
“If a candidate believes an election is threatened, then that candidate should be doing everything possible to see that the rules of the game are enforced properly – by having party agents in the numerous locations where they are permitted, for example, to bear witness to what happens – or doesn’t happen. That is part of the painstaking work of participating in, and building, a democracy. Drawing on or threatening violence is an attempt to short-circuit that process for the benefit of a few, but to the detriment of many.”
The US Consul General lamented that no election had been generally accepted to be credible in the country except that of 1993, which the late Moshood Abiola won but was later rejected.
While urging Nigerians to emulate the US politicians, Hawkins added, “It is undoubtedly important and interesting to see who the winners and losers in Ekiti and Osun will be, and how the outcomes will affect the national political picture in advance of next February’s elections.
“Nigerians have fought long and hard to earn the democratic rights they now possess, and Nigerians want – and deserve – peaceful, credible elections in Ekiti on June 21, in Osun on August 9, and across this great country in February 2015. That’s why these elections are a critical juncture. Every Nigerian – from the party leaders and candidates to average citizens – should do everything in his/her power to help meet those expectations, and thereby counter this crisis of credibility.”

6  Forum / Politics / President Jonathan Plotting To Kill Me- Kano State Governor on: 12-06-2014 08:34 AM

Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Wednesday accused President Goodluck Jonathan of plotting to eliminate him, in a fresh twist to a longstanding row between the two leaders.

In an exclusive interview with Premium Times Wednesday, Mr. Kwankwaso said the president was after his life and had ordered the withdrawal of half of his security details in a ploy to open him up to physical attacks.

“I have told my friends, and people of Kano, Nigerians and indeed the international community to hold Jonathan responsible for whatever happens to Kwankwaso, his family or even the people of Kano state,” Mr. Kwankwaso said at Kano State governor’s lodge in Abuja.

He accused the president of igniting crisis in Kano State after a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Lamido Sanusi, emerged the emir of Kano Sunday.

Presidential spokespersons, Reuben Abati and Doyin Okupe, did not respond to Premium Times requests for comments Wednesday.

The relationship between President Jonathan and Governor Kwankwaso, which for months had been all but warm, deteriorated in 2013 after Mr. Kwankwaso decamped from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Since then, both men have openly accused each other of corruption and ineptitude.

Mr. Sanusi’s emergence, Sunday, as emir of the powerful Kano emirate, revved up the squabble.

The presidency and the PDP were clearly opposed to the candidacy of the former CBN boss, who was removed from his post by Mr. Jonathan in February.

Protests broke out in Kano shortly after the announcement of the new emir, as his supporters clashed with those of his opponent, the son of the former emir, Ado Bayero, who died Friday.

Mr. Kwankwaso told Premium Times he has “credible information” the president instructed his supporters in Kano to unleash “mayhem” on the state.

“We don’t know his intention, but, certainly the intention is not good,” he said. “We have to tell him that igniting crisis in Kano is not in the interest of anybody. We have enough crisis already in the country, and now they are funding their stooges in Kano to protest and burn government properties.”

The governor accused the president of igniting crisis in Kano because the state is controlled by the APC.

“Recently, we also lost an esteemed Emir in Gombe and they basically followed the same process to elect a new emir, but they did not say anything because it is a PDP state.

“Now they are funding crisis in our state, I have never seen something like this,” the governor said.

Siege on emir’s palace

Mr. Kwankwaso said the new Kano emir is unable to move to the palace due to a police siege on the building- a development he blamed on the presidency.

He accused the presidency of planning to arrest Mr. Sanusi to stop his appointment as emir.

“We got information that they were planning to arrest him, so, we moved him to the Government House. I don’t want to imagine what would have happened if they succeeded,” he said.

The governor said his government and the APC enjoy overwhelming support in the state and was only bidding their time before reacting to the “intimidation” from the federal government.

“By the recent survey we just had and the local government election we held, we enjoy about 92 per cent support of the population, and the remaining 8 per cent are brewing and supporting crisis. There will come a time when this 92 per cent will be on the offensive, that is when they will realise that they are making a mistake.

“A sitting president brewing a crisis in a state like Kano? Everybody in this country knows that it is Jonathan that is creating this problem in Kano. I am yet to know why, but posterity will clearly show what his intentions are,” he said.

On the siege on the Emir’s palace, Mr. Kwankwaso said his government was just “watching and seeing how far they can go”.

8  Forum / The Buzz Central / HRH Sanusi Lamido Sanusi Speaks At Last! Says I Grew Up Under The Late Emir on: 12-06-2014 08:25 AM

The new Emir of Kano, HRH Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has decided to speak after a riot broke out in his home town immediately he was declared the new Emir of Kano on Sunday, 8th of June, 2014. The Emir says a lot of people who have spoken against his throne, have spoken ignorantly because they know little or nothing about his family or the throne.

“I grew up under the care of late Ado Bayero. I am more close to the late emir than my father who was outside the country. The late emir trained me; my first wife with whom I spent over 25 years with, is his daughter.

“We shared the same bed with his son, Turakin Kano Alhaji Nasiru Ado Bayero for over 10 years. Therefore we are calling on those people from outside the palace to stop interfering on the things that they didn’t understand.”

He added: “The Kano Emir Palace is one united family. Therefore I’m assuring the governor that all these riots and protests are not from our house, none of our relatives is behind these things and none of our relatives will sponsor such thing or be happy because of it. Because the way we grew up we all knew that all princes nurture the ambition of becoming emir one day but its Allah who chooses who will be the emir.

“The day an emir is selected all the princes are paying their allegiance to him. This is our tradition as nobody from the royal family is behind these riots.”

9  Forum / The Buzz Central / I Will Think About Marriage & Having Kids When I’m Done With Music- Presh on: 12-06-2014 08:23 AM

KCee’s former music other half, Presh has said the only thing he is thinking about now is his music. He says marriage can wait, and having kids in life can also wait till he’s ready. May be when I stop singing, I can have time for other things, Presh told TheNetng.

Tell us about your personal life. Are you thinking of marriage? At the moment the only thing I am thinking of is my music. The only thing I am engaged to is my music. For now, I am engaged to music. In fact, I am dating music. For now, what I feel for is my music and nothing else; that is what I am pursing.

A lot of artistes have had ‘love children.’ Are you hiding yours? No, I don’t have. You can go round to find out but I bet you, there’s nothing for you to find. If I am going to have one, I will let you know. For now, it is music that I want to marry. Maybe when I’m done with music, I might think of other things. But for now, it’s just music and nothing else for me. I love women and relationships, they are dear to me but for now, I have to take permission from them to marry music....
