A 25-year-old man simply identified as Osamame Isekhuere (aka Black Arrow) was weekend shot dead in Benin by his friend while trying to test the efficacy of  charms in his possession popularly known as ‘Africa Insurance’.

The shooting which occurred at the Oba market, at the centre of Benin metropolis forced many traders in the market to lock up their shops and run for their lives following riots occasioned by the killing.

Vanguard gathered that Osamame had asked one of his friends to shoot him to test a new charm that he had acquired against bullets after incising and rubbing the
charms on his body and he decided to test it with live bullets.

According to the source, Osamame first shot at his friend but the bullet did not penetrate but when the friend shot at Osamame on the chest, the charm failed.
Osamame was said to have died instantly.

His friends, who heard of the killing, burnt down a building where the said friend was living - a rented apartment.

Police spokesman, DSP Uwoh Noble, when contacted by Vanguard said he was yet to be briefed on the matter.

Hiplife artiste,Theophilus Tagoe aka Castro, is said to have died in a ski boat accident at Ada.
Sources say he drowned in the Volta Lake while on a weekend getaway with Black Stars striker, Asamoah Gyan.

Gyan was taking his friends a boat cruise in Ada, when the accident occurred Sunday afternoon, according to the reports.

The Black Stars Captain usually rents out a yacht to accommodate close family members and friends whenever he is in town for holidays.

But, according to Ghanasoccernet.com, the said yacht was unavailable this time around, as it had been sent out for repairs.

The group, therefore, resorted to using ski boats…Castro and his girlfriend were said to have taken one of the boats out on a cruise on the Volta Lake when the accident occurred.

According to the reports, the lady, who was not wearing a life jacket, suddenly fell into the lake, prompting Castro to try to rescue her.As Castro attempted to rescue the lady, both drowned.

The ski boat they were riding and the life jacket used by Castro have been recovered, but the bodies of the two have not been found, the reports stated.

Benjamin Tettey, who is at the scene, told Accra-based Adom FM that it might take two or three days before the bodies are found.

The reports HAVE NOT been independently verified.

Castro, who hails from Takoradi, was born in 1982 to Lydia Tagoe, a trader, and Mr Coffie, an accountant, at the Takoradi Harbour. He attended Anglican Primary and J.S.S in Takoradi.

Before he launched his debut album in 2003, he had featured on hip-life group 4×4 hit track, “sikletele” which officially introduced him into the local music scene.

Dr Abdul Jelil Tafawa Balewa Son of the late Nigeria’s First Republic Prime Minister, Dr Abdul Jelil Tafawa Balewa, has affirmed that with the right political party, he was fully prepared to contest the 2015 presidential election.

He said having consulted widely; he was convinced that Nigerians had been yearning for a new leadership capable of fulfilling the high expectations and aspirations of the greater majority in Nigeria. He said although his interest in the presidential seat was originally prompted by those he described as well-meaning elder statesmen from across the geopolitical zones of Nigeria, he was more prepared to take up the challenge.

Balewa’s son said his entry into politics would add value to the Nigerian democracy given the finesse, candour and pragmatism, which he would be infusing into the system based on experiences. He said being close to President Goodluck Jonathan had made his attempt to lead Nigeria more interesting, as he would not consider contest for Nigeria’s presidential seat a do or die affair.

Jonathan, he said, was a pragmatic politician, who had always welcomed free and fair contest.

On the political platform to use, Jelili, a medical expert, said he would keep that under wrap for strategic reason. He affirmed, however, that at the nick of time, the political party that would offer him ticket would come clearly to intimate Nigerians about its agenda. He said; “Some political parties have

been talking to me alright. I have more than two of the parties, including the major ones showing interest. It will be unfair for me to start dropping names, more so when consultations were still ongoing on the next line of action.”

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a gang of armed robbers who specialised in robbing traders and commuters in the early morning hours at the Iyana Oba and Badagry areas of Lagos. Members of the four-man gang are Bode Oladejo, who is said to be the ring leader, Christian Opene, Matthew Nwachie, and a yet-to-be identified member, who the police said was still at large.

In his confession, 22-year-old Oladejo, who hails from Kwara State, said he took to armed robbery because of his father’s irresponsible attitude at home which had also frustrated the family.
“Since I was 11, I have been tearing people’s nets at night and breaking in to steal their property. I started to do this because my father had been irresponsible at home. Then, we were staying at Ikorodu, Lagos.
“At a time, the landlord sent us out of the house because my father did not pay up the rent. He travelled to Ibadan. My mother stayed back in Ikorodu. I became a street boy, trying to fend for myself. Since 2003, I have been robbing. It is all because of my father’s irresponsible attitude.
“I was initially using machetes to rob until I got a gun...
From one Monday. He sold the gun to me for N30,000. I usually robbed around the Iyana Oba and Okokomaiko areas. But I came to Ajegunle for an operation on that fateful day on the invitation of a gang member, Christian.”
Oladejo confessed that he made about N50,000 on each robbery operation he participated in with the gang.

The police, according to Punch, received a tip-off about the gang, and the Commissioner of Police, directed the Special Anti-Robbery Squad team, led by Abba Kyari, to go after them.

It was further learnt that the gang members were arrested on Sunday, June 15, in the Ajegunle area of Lagos after they had returned from an operation. They had raided a house on Tona Eradiri Street, Ajegunle, the previous day and dispossessed a man, Mr. Godwin Perebor, and two ladies of N285,000, two Automated Teller Machine cards and their company’s Identity cards, among other valuables.

It was learnt that the suspects told the police that they usually went to people’s houses at night with weapons such as guns and cutlasses to rob them. They also confessed to have been preparing for another operation on the Sunday they were apprehended by the police.

A second member of the gang, Opene, from Oghara, Delta State, said he invited the gang to rob Perebor, who was also his co-tenant, because the latter offended him.

He said, “Godwin (Perebor) and I used to work in a factory in the past before I joined the gang. At that firm, one of his friends poured hot water on me during a quarrel. I asked Godwin to take me to his house, but he refused, joining sides with his friend against me.

“When I joined the gang, I remember the incident and decided to teach him a lesson. That was why I arranged for them to rob him and two other ladies.”

The third gang member, Nwachie, a 20-year-old from Isele Ukwu, Delta State, said he took to stealing since he was 16, and had robbed several passengers and traders.

He said, “I was only using cutlasses. It is only Bode who carries a gun. With the money I realised, I took care of myself. But I also used my loot to smoke, drink and to have séx with women.”

An Islamic group known as the Concerned Muslim Professionals, CMP, yesterday called on the Sultan of Sokoto and the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, to call the leader of the boko haram sect for discussions.

The group said the insurgency persisted because of the failure of Muslim leaders to intervene, insisting several members of the sect would have laid down their arms and many wouldn’t have joined the erroneous sect, if the Muslim leaders in Nigeria had engaged the sect for discussions. The group also says it is regrettable that the activities of the sect had become a great embarrassment to the Islamic faith.

Part of the statement obtained by journalists from the group states that, “If the family of billionaire, Umar Mutallab, could have a terrorist in its midst, then such a disease could be everywhere; it can only take the effort of the Sultan and the other Muslim leaders to mobilise compliance by parents and relatives, which is part of the actions being demanded by well-meaning Nigerians.

“The biggest task before our Muslim and Islamic leaders in the North is to reconcile the warring communities of Muslims and Christians through forgiveness, healing and genuine social integration and coexistence; similar to the one referred to by General Gowon on the Muslims of the South-West geopolitical zone. The other task is to make Boko Haram come out of hiding, denounce terrorism and embrace government’s overtures.

“A failure on the part of the Muslim leadership (under His Eminence the Sultan) to discharge these responsibilities/actions to the later will render it of questionable ability, doubtful recognition, decimal loyalty or an outright dismissal as a mere smoke-screen. As obedient and loyalists to His Eminence the Sultan, our hearts bleed on these realities,” the statement read.

63 women out of 70 women who were reported to have been abducted by Boko Haram men in Borno state between June 12th - June 14th have regained their freedom. Reports by government sources as well as members of the Borno state vigilante group confirmed their escape.

An official of the Borno state vigilante group, Abbas Gava while confirming the escape to journalists in Borno, said the women made the bold move to escape yesterday Saturday July 5th while the sect men were attacking a military base in Damboa.

"I have just received an alert from my colleagues in Damboa area that about 63 of the abducted women and girls had made it back home. They took the bold step when their abductors moved out to carry out an operation. We don’t have the details of their escape yet, but we believe God gave them the opportunity at the time the insurgents came in their large numbers to attack Damboa where about 12 soldiers, five policemen, over 50 Boko Haram members and unspecified number of civilians were killed yesterday (Saturday).”he said. Mr. Gava also said five women and two girls are currently still with the sect men, adding that one of the women is said to be a nursing mother.

A security official who also spoke with Premium Times anonymously confirmed the escape of the women
"There is no doubt about your report; the women and girls were able to escape. I guess it was during the time the gunmen were attacking Damboa,  left behind just some few men to watch over the women, but the women took advantage of an opportunity when the guys were dozing off, and bolted away but quietly" the source said. The source also added that some of the escaped women found themselves on the border towns between Adamawa and Borno state and have been taken into custody by the soldiers there. Some others who knew the terrain of the bushes were able to find their way home.
The Borno state government has not made any official statement on this.

Police have arrested a 34-year-old man on numerous sex crime allegations after detectives learned he may have segxwally assaulted his grandmother and uncle. Sgt. Pete Simpson said Willie Andre Johnson, 34, will be arraigned Monday [July 7] afternoon in Multnomah County Circuit Court on charges that could include attempted first-degree rape, unlawful segxwal penetration, first-degree segxwal abuse, first-degree kidnapping and fourth-degree assault.
The investigation started July 1 when officers were called to a North Portland home on reports of a segxwal assault. Officers learned that the suspect – later identified as Johnson – segxwally assaulted his 82-year-old grandmother and his 49-year-old uncle, and then fled the home.
The 82-year-old woman was treated at a local hospital, police said. Police used a K-9 unit to search for Johnson but were unable to locate him.
Johnson was taken into custody around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday in Northeast Portland after police received information about his whereabouts, police said.
Detectives with the Sex Crimes Unit interviewed Johnson at police headquarters, but he was later transported to a local hospital after complaining of medical issues, Simpson said.
Johnson is a registered sex offender; he remains lodged in the Multnomah County Detention Center.

Residents of Uwa Street in Benin City, the Edo state capital were thrown into pandemonium on Tuesday [July 1], as a middle aged driver (names withheld) allegedly beat to death a Police Corporal, Osas Agbonmwenma. The deceased, until his death, served at St. Saviour Police Division, Benin. The Corporal met his untimely death when his team accosted the driver for driving an unregistered vehicle during a routine patrol.
An eyewitness told Daily Independent, The policemen ordered the driver to pull-over along Uwa Street by First East Circular Road Junction, on sighting him driving a car without plate number. The attempt by the policemen to forcefully take over control of the vehicle led to a physical combat between them as the driver grabbed the late Corporal policeman by the neck, so tightly that he became unconscious in the process.
The eyewitness related further that attempts by other policemen to free their colleague from the driver’s grip by beating him harder failed to yield desirable result, as the fierce-looking driver persisted on beating the deceased until he became unconscious. However, another version of the story had it that the driver was asked to drive the vehicle to the police station in company of the late Corporal, but purportedly diverted to an unknown direction, prompting the Corporal to forcefully stop around St. Maria Goretti Grammar School area.
Apparently provoked by the action of the policeman, the driver allegedly hit the Corporal on the forehead with an object. The policeman it was gathered was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where he died.
A motorist, Mr. Nosa Eribo, who witnessed the incident, blamed it on the overzealous of the policemen whom he alleged wanted to extort money from the driver by all means. Reacting to the development, the Edo state Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO) Noble Uwoh, confirmed the incident, adding that the driver and the car were in the police custody. The Edo state Police image maker, added that investigation has begun on the matter, just as he advised members of the public to always be law-abiding and civil in their dealings with others.

It was a pathetic sight at the 13th Brigade Premises of the Nigerian Army in Calabar, Cross River State on Saturday [July 5] as over 20,000 youths converged to write the examination for recruitment into the Nigeria Army.
Even when it started raining heavily, the applicants could not leave the field as they waited to be screened to write the examination. An applicant from Cross River State said they were desperate to get the job and would withstand anything to get it.
Comprised of young men and women, the teeming crowd sat quietly as rain drops pelted their bodies and soaked them right down to their under garments while horse whip bearing soldiers stood guard.
The youth underwent rigorous screening exercise before being allowed entry into the field at the  Brigade headquarters at Akim
where they wrote the examination as  no hall was big enough to accommodate them. They first stood in a long queue which stretched two kilometres beginning from the gate of the Brigade through Mary Slessor Avenue to Calabar Road .
“As it is, I don’t mind if we are recruited and sent to Maiduguri. It is better than not having any job. It is better to die in the war front than to die of joblessness at home. There are no jobs my brother that is why you see me here. It is not I like it”.
Captain Ibrahim Yusuf, the Army Brigade Public Relations Officer, was not present at the examination venue and several calls to his mobile phone by Vanguard were not answered. A source at the venue of the exercise said this year’s rigorous screening exercise of the applicants was to safeguard against any breach in security during the exercise.
