2  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / US Doctors Says ‘Secret Serum’ Helped Save Lives Of American Ebola Patients on: 4-08-2014 09:43 PM

So wait, the US may have found a cure to Ebola? And if they have, will they come help patients of this dreaded disease in Africa? The article below was written by Dr. Sanjay Gupta for CNN

and they are saying an experimental drug called ZMapp likely saved the lives of 2 US missionary doctors (pictured above) who contracted the disease while working in Liberia…see report below from CNN..
Three vials containing an experimental drug stored at subzero temperatures were flown into Liberia last week in a last-ditch effort to save two American missionary workers who had contracted Ebola, according to a source familiar with details of the treatment.
The drug appears to have worked, sources say. Dr. Kent Brantly’s and Nancy Writebol’s conditions significantly improved after receiving the medication, sources say. Brantly was able to walk into Emory University Hospital in Atlanta after being evacuated to the United States last week, and Writebol is expected to arrive in Atlanta on Tuesday.

On July 22, Brantly woke up feeling feverish. Fearing the worst, Brantly immediately isolated himself. Writebol’s symptoms started three days later. A rapid field blood test confirmed the infection in both of them after they had become ill with fever, vomiting and diarrhea.
It’s believed both Brantly and Writebol, who worked with the aid organization Samaritan’s Purse, contracted Ebola from another health care worker at their hospital in Liberia, although the official Centers for Disease Control and Prevention case investigation has yet to be released.
A representative from the National Institutes of Health contacted Samaritan’s Purse in Liberia and offered the experimental treatment, known as ZMapp, for the two patients, according to the source.
The drug was developed by the biotech firm Mapp Biopharmaceutical Inc., which is based in San Diego. The patients were told that this treatment had never been tried before in a human being but had shown promise in small experiments with monkeys.
According to company documents, four monkeys infected with Ebola survived after being given the therapy within 24 hours after infection. Two of four other monkeys that started therapy within 48 hours after infection also survived. One monkey that was not treated died within five days of exposure to the virus.
Brantly and Writebol were aware of the risk of taking a new, little understood treatment and gave informed consent, according to two sources familiar with the care of the missionary workers. In the monkeys, the experimental serum had been given within 48 hours of infection. Brantly didn’t receive it until he’d been sick for nine days.
The medicine is a three-mouse monoclonal antibody, meaning that mice were exposed to fragments of the Ebola virus and then the antibodies generated within the mice’s blood were harvested to create the medicine. It works by preventing the virus from entering and infecting new cells.
The Ebola virus causes viral hemorrhagic fever, which refers to a group of viruses that affect multiple organ systems in the body and are often accompanied by bleeding.
Early symptoms include sudden onset of fever, weakness, muscle pain, headaches and a sore throat. They later progress to vomiting, diarrhea, impaired kidney and liver function — and sometimes internal and external bleeding.
The ZMapp vials reached the hospital in Liberia where Brantly and Writebol were being treated Thursday morning. Doctors were instructed to allow the serum to thaw naturally without any additional heat. It was expected that it would be eight to 10 hours before the medicine could be given, according to a source familiar with the process.

3  Forum / The Buzz Central / 'l'm working on a collaboration with Drake & Donjazzy '-Davido on: 4-08-2014 08:07 AM

Davido is undoubtedly on a roll. He seems to have the formula for hit songs ..However, he says collaborating with other artists is not a ploy to be popular. He is also in talks with Drake..Imagine them on a track...He told Encomium
"I might not call it ‘dream collaboration’ but by His grace, it’ll work, and already, I am talking with Drake and Don Jazzy. We would work on something very unique. My collaboration with other artistes is not a ploy to be popular, after all, I am not going to take the glory alone. Apart from the artistes you collaborated with, you never know what song can make you big as well. It doesn’t matter if you feature a big or up-and-coming artiste. That’s the main reason I am doing this."

5  Forum / Religion / I sold vegetables for mum, chairs for dad –Pastor Chris Okafor on: 4-08-2014 07:37 AM

Dressed in a designer suit at the launching of his two books last weekend, you’ll have the impression that the host  is an icon in entertainment or a socialite. Dr Chris Okafor,  is Senior Pastor of Liberation City with   headquarters  at Ojodu, Lagos. Sunday Sun cornered him after the event for a chat and  discovered that the Business Administration graduate of  Ambrose Alli  University , Ekpoma has been at the helm of  affairs of the church for almost 11 years. He gave us a glimpse of his humble beginning  and spoke on other issues.

Excerpts:

You’re light-skinned and quite handsome. Which of your parents do you look like?

My parents are dark in complexion. I’m the only light-skinned  child among my siblings. While growing up  in the ministry, people used to say “This pastor looks like Jesus.” Initially, my mother gave birth to only my elder brother, Daniel, but he later died. My mother had other children after his demise, but they’re  girls and my father was uncomfortable with that.

My mother got pregnant again and prayed, believing God for a male child. Before  I was born, prophesy  revealed that she would have a son and that “he would  be a mighty man of God and  known all over the world.” While still pregnant with me, my mother  did something very unusual. She went to the market, bought a portrait of  Jesus and  placed it on her belly every time she was lying down. Eventually, I was born.

How do you cope with women as a pastor?

I’ll say I’m  focused . I know what I’m doing and where I’m  going. Women will not necessarily distract me. We are busy almost everyday of the week. Sometimes, we resume in the morning and close very late at night. My day starts at 2am and  I pray till 6am or 7 am. I fast everyday also. I have been fasting for eight years on daily basis.

I am committed to this work of my heavenly father. If you don’t go to the river, you will not drown. My daily itinerary is from my house to the  church, from church to my house. I don’t go to parties, I don’t go to functions.

Even when you were in the university,  you didn’t party?

I come from a very disciplined home. We fasted twice weekly  while I was growing up. We  fasted every Tuesday and every Saturday. There was no time for misbehavior.  My parents were not rich, they were poor. My father was a carpenter and  my mother a vegetable seller.

6  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Married Man Kills Mistress Over Infidelity on: 4-08-2014 06:52 AM

The Abia State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has paraded a 45-year-old married man for allegedly killing his concubine on the suspicion that she was dating another lover.

The suspect, Nwokeoma Ohuaba, a native of Akpama Ugba in Osisioma Local Government Area of the state was said to have been infuriated having caught her with another man during an unscheduled visit.

He was said to have hit her in the head with a piece of iron in the ensuing altercation as he attempted to confront her while the alleged intruder fled for dear life.

Public Relations Officer for NSCDC, Abia State, Victor Ogbonnaya, who paraded the suspect on behalf of the state Commandant, Andy Dateer, said the arrest was made following a tip off.

He gave the victim’s name as Charity Onwutaebe, a widow and mother of three to her late husband.

According to NSCDC, the victim was accused by the suspect to have attacked him first but could not withstand his superior response , thus collapsing instantly as they fought each other.

She was said to have died later in a hospital at Obingwa where the suspect had hurriedly rushed her claiming she was involved in a domestic accident.

According to NSCDC, when the suspect noticed that the victim might not survive, “he disappeared and refused to come for her, but the hospital management tricked him by telling him that she has recovered and needed provision and food and when he came he was arrested.”

NSCDC said the suspect would be handed over to the police for further investigations and prosecution, acknowledging the synergy among security agencies in the state .

Later in an interview, the suspect claimed that the deceased was his wife and not his concubine as alleged by NSCDC, adding that he married her after the death of his first wife.

He said they were quarrelling over a phone when she first hit him with the iron but “when I retaliated with the same iron she collapsed.”

The suspect also denied absconding but explained he only went to mobilise for funds after making an initial deposit of N5,000 out of N10,000 which he was asked to pay, but upon his return, the victim had passed on.

In a bid to contain the dreaded Ebola virus, the Lagos State Government led by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, visited Pastor TB.Joshua’s Synagogue to advice them against opening their doors to  people from West African countries with the disease .
Idris said,
“We have our strategies that we intend to share with you. Again, we need to know the resources you have here because whether it is one or two cases, if they are allowed to get out, it is a major problem. We are here to work together on how to contain this disease.”
Another member of the delegation and Director, Centre for Disease Control (CDC), Professor Abdulsalami Nasidi said

We are here to engage you positively, we know the powers of this House and your powers and we are duty- bound to protect you and your congregation. We have no doubt the power God has given you, we cant do that, but we want to help and make it work stronger
Reacting to their visit, Prophet Joshua, promised to work with government by suspending most of his major church healing programs and also said , he would visit those countries than allow their residents come to Nigeria
In his words
“I am ready to work with you. I love my country and I will be ready to work with you. Even if it is a rumour, there is need to secure our environment to ensure that it is safe.”
