2  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / How Lagos nursing mother got infected with Ebola virus - doctor on: 12-08-2014 06:32 PM
A medical doctor has described how a nursing mother who is one of the confirmed cases of the Ebola virus in Lagos contracted the disease while attending her antenatal care at First Consultant Hospital in Obalende, Lagos where the first victim of Ebola virus in Nigeria, Patrick Sawyerr, died. The lady was confirmed to have the deadly disease after testing positive at the NNPC staff clinic on Muri Okunola street in the Victoria Island area of Lagos.

Speaking anonymously with Punch, the doctor said;
'The lady attended ante-natal at First Consultant prior to the arrival of the Liberian, Mr. Patrick Sawyer. She was delivered of her baby at the hospital after which she was discharged. A few weeks later, Mr. Sawyer came around and was attended to by health workers. He was first treated for malaria, then typhoid, before there was high index of suspicion. He tested positive for Ebola and died. Then the woman, who gave birth at the hospital came back to the hospital for her baby’s immunization. The nurses who attended to Sawyer also attended to her. When she visited the place again last week, she discovered the place had been shut down for proper fumigation as a means of control against Ebola.” he said. Continue...
Seeing that the hospital has been shut down, the lady who had started showing signs of fever proceeded to the NNPC staff clinic which was close by.
'She was first treated for Malaria. However, after some medical tests, there was a high suspicion of Ebola haemorrhagic fever. On Friday, the Lagos State’s emergency response team on Ebola virus came around and took her to the Infectious Diseases Hospital,” he added.

The management of the hospital after confirming she had the deadly virus immediately shut down the hospital indefinitely.
Confirming the doctor's report, the Medical Officer of Health, Iru-Victoria Island Local Council Development Area, Dr. Wale Akeredolu, said the woman's baby has been quarantined and is under surveillance
“The baby has also been quarantined to see if after the incubation period of two to 21 days, she would manifest the symptoms of Ebola.” he said

4  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / I wept when I visited Tinapa – Custom Comptroller on: 12-08-2014 05:38 PM
The Comptroller in charge of Cross River and Akwa Ibom states Command of the Nigeria Custom Services, Mr. Yekini Atoyebi, said he was dazed and had to weep on the first day he visited the Tinapa Business and Leisure Resort complex in Calabar.

He said he wept because of the waste and desolate state of facilities at the Tinapa, which ought to have been a huge business hub in Africa.  Atoyebi spoke at the Government House in Calabar when paid his maiden courtesy visit on the State Security Adviser, Mr. Rekpene Bassey.
He said he could not imagine how such gigantic infrastructure could be lying desolate in the country.

“When I went there some people in my entourage said I was crying louder than the bereaved, but to me, I could not imagine how such a gigantic infrastructure would be lying desolate when in some places such infrastructure could be bringing in revenue that can keep a state running for months,” he said.

The Comptroller urged the state government to do everything within its reach to ensure the resort was functioning.
Atoyebi stated that the Customs had to intervene when operators of the resort started subjecting the policies and privileges operational in the place to manipulation and reckless abuse.

“There is need for a stakeholders meeting among all the parties in Tinapa including the manufacturers, the business operators, management and Customs so that each will clearly understand its rights and privileges for a successful operation of the place,” he said.
In his response, the State Security Adviser implored Atoyebi to ensure that officers and men of the command were vigilant by ensuring that the Nigerian Inland Water Ways Jetty was not importing items used in the production of explosive devices by terrorists.

The jetty berths vessels from neighbouring countries like Cameroon Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.  Bassey also appealed to the Federal Government to give customs the needed equipment and incentives to do their work effectively.
“I understand that the Customs generate income next to oil for this country and in my view it is necessary for the geese that lays the golden egg to be fed with golden feeds so the Federal Government should provide you with the necessary equipment and take good care of your welfare too,” he said.

5  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Chai ! Ekiti smokers face ₦250,000 fine, six-month jail on: 12-08-2014 05:33 PM
Ekiti State Government on Monday signed the Prohibition of Smoking in Public Places Rules, 2014, to begin the enforcement of the law.
The signing ceremony took place during public presentation of the rules regulations on Tuesday in Ado-Ekiti by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Eniola Ajayi.
It was in collaboration with the New Initiative for Social Development and Campaign for Tobacco-free Kids.
She said, “The rules are designed to ensure full enforcement of the spirit and letters of the law.
“If the area designated for smoking is to be within an enclosed building or a partially enclosed place on any premises, only one such smoking area may be designated.”

The law was enacted by the House of Assembly and assented to by Governor Kayode Fayemi in March 2012.
It restricted smoking to designated areas in an outdoor or open space.
It imposes a fine ranging between N10,000 and N250,000 on offenders, or imprisonment for a term of three to six months, or both.
Ajayi said, “It is important to stress again that the laws, and indeed, the rules are not designed to punish the smokers.
“Rather, they are necessary for the protection of the non-smokers who may be affected by the fumes and diseases caused by second-hand smoke.
“Diseases such as brain tumour, middle ear disease, asthma, leukemia, cancel, madden infant death and so on. These are non-communicable and avoidable diseases, which are predominantly caused by tobacco smoke.”

7  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / US Must Abandon Goal of Unified Iraq - Kurdish Advocate on: 12-08-2014 11:32 AM
US President Barack Obama’s airstrikes in northern Iraq are helpful – but will not stop the country’s inevitable breakup, Kani Xulam, head of a pro-Kurdish group, told Naijapals source on Tuesday.

“It was good that Obama came forward and protected the Kurds, but his desire to put Iraq together comes too late. Iraq is artificial – it’s neither a legitimate nor a linguistically-similar state. Unless Iraq has a very weak central government, it has no prospect of holding together,” Xulam, director of the American Kurdish Information Network, said.

“Obama must come to terms with the reality of the Middle East, the frontiers are changing and the trend is towards borders based on linguistic similarities. Iraqi Kurds have always sided with Americans, despite their bitter history with the US, and America needs to support their wishes."
The US has launched airstrikes against the Islamic State, which is also known as ISIS and ISIL. The Sunni Muslim group controls swathes of Iraq and Syria and recent attacks on Kurdish-run northern Iraq have forced tens of thousands of Christians to flee their homes.

Turmoil in Iraq and greater autonomy for its northern Kurdish provinces have raised the specter of a free Kurdish state breaking away from the south. But the US warns against Iraq fragmenting and says Kurds, Sunnis, Shias and other groups should work together in a unified nation.
8  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / US Seeks to Bolster Waning Influence in Iraq by Backing Kurdish Regime - expert on: 12-08-2014 11:15 AM
The US interference in Iraq's politics aims at salvaging the Kurdish regime – and with it whatever influence Washington might still have in the region, US political analyst James Petras believes.
"The purpose of [US President Barack] Obama's interfering in Iraqi politics has to do, first and foremost, with saving the Kurdish regime, which is essentially under US influence," Petras, a professor of sociology at Binghamton University, told Naijapals Source on Monday.
Continue..
He added that the Kurds have suffered major defeats, the US backed Iraqi army has been dismal, and Washington's attempt to capitalize on its invasion and occupation of Iraq has ended in a failure.
"Washington is caught between its support for the Islamic Right in Syria, and now it's spilled over into Iraq and it is upsetting its base with the Kurds," he said.

"I think it is Washington's reengagement in this because its politics have failed, its military support for satellite governments has failed also, it is left with two options: either accepting defeat or trying to reenter the war in order to salvage some remnant of influence in that region," the pundit explained.
Petras warned about dire consequences of the US operation in Iraq that will have an extremely damaging effect on the US.

"This operation will be a tremendous boost for ISIS [Islamic State militant group], because the US presence will give the Sunnis the justification for joining in the holy war against US imperialism, whereas before it was a local conflict," he explained. “Now, with the US presence, jihadists from around the world are beginning to flock to join ISIS. So, I think the first consequence will be to generalize the war."
The analyst also thinks that Washington will not be able to gain any military security for the Kurdish regime by airstrikes alone.

"So, this operation is the first step towards expanding US military presence on the ground, which is a very controversial point in our domestic policies, domestic opposition," Petras emphasized.
"This bombing is going to be ineffectual in turning the tide in the conflict, and, two, it will stipulate a greater jihadist process in Iraq and thirdly it would lead to an escalation of US involvement in Iraq and reentry of US as a final resort."

The analyst stressed that the only positive outcome was the US withdrawal and recognition that the policy of invading and occupying Iraq was a failure, and the attempt to realign its policies.
The multiplication of wars, like the power grab in Kiev, the war in Syria, the reentry in Iraq, the falling apart of the US position in Afghanistan where even a general was killed in the highest security zone are all indications that the ambitions of the United States to establish itself as a global empire are crumbling," Petras underlined.

"The United States has to rethink the configuration of the world…It has to change from being a military power, to a market-oriented approach in order to improve domestic economy," he concluded.
The US has begun supplying weapons to the Kurdish Peshmergas territory and launching airstrikes in an effort to quell the Sunni insurgency. Islamic State fighters have made considerable gains in northern Iraq in recent months, forcing tens of thousands of people from religious minorities to flee their homes.
9  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Mass Prison Break in Haiti: 329 Prisoners Escape, Including Notorious Kidnapper on: 12-08-2014 10:21 AM
Following the attack on a Croix-des-Bouquets prison located on the outskirts of the capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince, 329 inmates managed to escape, prompting a nationwide search operation by local law enforcement, according to AFP.
Local eyewitnesses described how first they heard gunfire coming from the prison, and shortly after saw hundreds of people fleeing from the correctional facility in every direction.

During a press conference on Monday, Haiti National Police Chief Godson Orleus said that the government has already requested aid from Interpol as well as from the neighboring countries of Dominican Republic and Jamaica because some of the escaped convicts may have fled abroad. At least two guards sustained gunshot wounds during the attack.

Police spokesman Gary Desrosiers said that 10 prisoners had already been recaptured. He also added that the attackers’ goal was apparently to liberate Clifford Brandt, a notorious businessman who was convicted in 2012 of kidnapping two children.

The Haitian government offered a $20,000 reward for information that would help apprehend Brandt.
The Croix-des-Bouquets prison was constructed in 2012 as part of an effort to reconstruct the Haitian infrastructure that was badly damaged during the 2010 earthquake, with Canada providing a significant amount of funding.

10  Forum / The Buzz Central / Armed robbers can never rob me, they respect me - Daddy Showkey declares on: 12-08-2014 09:56 AM

In an interview with Tribune, popular dancehall star Daddy Showkey said no armed robbers in Lagos can rob him because they respect him too much. He said he's encountered many of them on the streets, but they immediately let him go and even apologize when they recognize him. See below...
You were said to have been attacked by those alleged to be gunmen in your Lagos home shortly after you returned, could you tell us what happened?
Yes, they were assassins. They came to my house and killed one of my boys. Thank God I was lucky. Those guys were not armed robbers because in Nigeria today, no armed robbers can come to my house. It can never happen.
Why?

I grew up in the street of Ajegunle. I have always been a street boy. Armed robbers can never rob me. I have met a lot of them on the streets of Lagos several times and they will tell me Showkey Baba, we didn’t know it was you. Please, no vex, dey go. That respect is always there.
Armed robbers respect you? Do you have any connection with them?
That is a story for another day, Mr reporter.

So who were the people that came to my house?
The people that came to my house saw my son and asked him about my whereabouts, he said I was not around. My son went back inside and told one of my boys to go and attend to the guys at the gate, when he got there, they thought he was my bodyguard, so they shot him. They were inside my house for hours and they did not take anything away. Armed robber won’t come to my house and start asking of Showkey, they will face what they have come for and leave. But these guys were asking for me and when they didn’t see me, they left. I am sad because they killed one of my boys.
You were said to have been shot few months after that incident at your house, is that true?
Yes. I was shot inside a filling station in Lagos.
Why would anybody want to kill you?
I don’t know. I can’t even explain what could be responsible for that but I thank God that I have overcome that now.
Before you had that accident that kept you out of active music for almost ten years, the impression people had about you was that you had reached the eclipse of your career. Many people did not even know you had an accident until you came back. What do you have to say?
First of all, let me thank God that I am back again. Because If I had died before, during or after the accident, this interview will never happen. Talking about my career before the accident, you will agree with me that I have come a long way in the music industry. Myself and other old generation musicians set the ground rolling for today’s musicians and I am proud to say that.

But you will agree that at some point, Showkey’s name was not as pronounced as it used to be?
You can’t remain on top of your game for the rest of your life. There will be a moment when you will be forced to take the back seat and observe things, but that does not mean you are no more relevant or music has nothing to do with you again. The mistake most people make is that when they don’t see or hear about you, they quickly conclude that your life in music is over. I am not surprised that people didn’t know that I had an accident because I didn’t come out to tell Nigerians that I am down ooo, please help me.

Why? Are you saying that because you have the wherewithal to handle your predicament?
It is not about having the resources to handle my problem, it is more of my decision not to bother people with my problem. Why should I disturb them in the first place? Because they are my fans does not mean they should know about every step I take about my life. I asked myself one question which was, would Nigerians not have known if I was arrested for drugs or something capable of tarnishing my image?.
It seems you are sad that despite your popularity, Nigerians did not know that Daddy Showkey had a life-threatening accident...
No. I am not feeling any sadness in my heart. I am even happy right now. I can’t be happier. I am not bothered whether they know or they don’t. What matters to me is that I was able to handle my predicament through the help of God and some people who God used to help me. I am grateful to these people and I wish them well in all they do. They are my people now and they are my friends.

You have new friends now?
I didn’t say I have new friends. What I am saying is that I have learnt new lesson about life and I now know what friendship is about.
So none of your friends in the music industry came to the hospital to look after you?
The fact is that how many of them knew that I had an accident? How many of them knew which hospital I was admitted to?. It was not the matter of who was there or not, it was the matter of how I was able to handle my situation and managed everything very well. Another thing is that even those who would have come didn’t come because of one reason or the other but I am not bothered about that. Life goes on my brother. You live to learn and you learn to live. When on my sick bed, I read a report about my accident published by one national newspaper in Nigeria, I wept. I wept because that was the only newspaper that reported it.

What single lesson did that experience teach you?
Not a single one but many lessons but the chief of them is caution. I have learnt how to approach life with extreme caution. You know why? If Showkey had died in that accident, I am sure that by now people would have forgotten about me. Perhaps when they listen to any of my songs, they may feel like ouch! that was Showkey’s song. We missed him so much. The bitter truth is that life goes on.

What was running on your mind when you were on that bed?

Did you at any point remember music and your dreams which could have gone unfulfilled?
How do I start to describe the experience to you? It was a very bad one but I thank God that I am lucky. The only question on my mind was will I be able to walk again? I was so particular about that question that my doctors would tell me, Mr man you will walk again. The doctors told me I would not have been able to work again if I had delayed the operation for few more weeks. I still don’t believe I am walking again because what I saw in the hospital gave me a different impression about life and I am grateful to God.

At 32 weeks a nurse informed Lara her baby already weighed 6lbs- the size of some full-term babies. Just four weeks later, Lara was rushed in for a caesarean after her waters broke unexpectedly. Lara and her partner welcomed baby Savannah into the world, who was born weighing a hefty 9lbs 5oz

"We were so happy she was healthy though, we could cope with the fact she was a bit bigger than most newborns." Lara said

16  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Ebola outbreak may have started with 2 year old boy in Guinea on: 11-08-2014 09:00 PM
The largest outbreak of Ebola in history was likely started by a 2 year old boy in a remote village in Guinea according to researchers. The boy, called Patient Zero in this outbreak, died on December 6th 2013 after suffering from fever, black stool & vomiting. That illness has now been found to be Ebola.

Before he died, he infected his mother, his 3 year old sister, his grandmother and a mid wife who was caring for him when he was ill. His mum and sister died before the end of December 2013 after suffering bleeding symptoms. His grandmother died January 1st. The mid-wife died by February 11th but before dying, she had passed the virus to her family members who died the following month in March 2014.

The virus spread from the Southern Guinea village to other parts of Africa after villagers from Sierre Leone and Liberia, who share a border with the village, attended the grandmother's burial. Two of the funeral attendees fell ill and the virus spread from their families to their villages and to health care workers and family members taking care of patients. And one Patrick Sawyer brought it to Nigeria!  How the child became infected is a biggest mystery as scientist who have traced the the outbreak this time say they don't know how the toddler got infected.

So far, 960 people have died from the virus while 1,779 people have been infected.

There is no let up in the attacks in Plateau State as no fewer than 14 persons have been killed and 230 cows stolen by gunmen in Yelwa town in Shendam and Jos East local government areas of the state.  It was gathered that the gunmen attacked Yelwa village in the early hours of Monday, shooting sporadically into the air and killing 12 people. The rampaging gunmen succeeded in rustling over 200 cattle.

A source in Shendam, who does not want his name in print said the gunmen who came in their numbers were heavily armed. The incident also followed a similar style in Babayo-Zarazong village in Jos East Local and Government Area when another group of gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen attacked the village killing two persons and burning down houses.

It was gathered that about 15 homes were razed by the gunmen in Jos East. The state’s Police Command spokesman, DSP Emmanuel Abu, confirmed the attacks to our correspondent on Monday.  He did not however confirm the casualty figures as he said the command was waiting for report from divisional police officers in the areas.  He said, “Yes there was an attack in Shendam and some people were killed, but I don’t have the exact casualty figure in both incidents.”

Abu added that the Commissioner of Police, Mr. CP Nasiru Oki, has deployed enough security in the affected villages to control the security situation. He however said that no arrest have been made, adding that police would do every possible to bring the culprits to book.
